FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS "Peace on earth good will toward all men," is being said around the world in many lan guages this Yuletide season and it is something which all men understand.

When we say "Merry Christmas" and sincerely mean the greeting, then you speak the words of happinese and brotherly love for your fellowman, and you will in turn be blessed with like greeting.

Of all the yearly molidays, the Christmas Holidays are the days of sincere feeling of good will toward all creatures of the earth, which should make us more aware of the feeling of closeness to all people of the earth to each other, in peace and good will.

The beautiful Christmas Story, which becomes more meaningful to us as we grow older and more wise, hould rouse a powerful reaction in our hearts of each of us to the voice of brotherly love, that voice which can dry the tears of those brothers and sisters and children of those parts of the earth who are less fortunate than we are today. More than at any other time in the past it is necessary that we become aware of the fact that we are members of one big family, brothers and sisters and that we should try to mutually understand each other, for our own good.

Let us strive, then, harder than ever before for the ideal of unity in wordly brotherhood, and in this way fill our minds and hearts with the beautiful words "Peace on earth, good will toward all men."

This may seem trite and reptitious, something which you've heard so many times during each Yuletide season, but I assure you that it is my sincere expression to you, my sincere wish that only in good will, hormony and understanding, one for another, will lead us

to our future goals, and in that way we shall work for the good of our fraternal order.

In this way only will this Holiday Season be remembered as different from the others, for the season will bring us greater peace, contentment and success. In your moments of happiness this Christmas, remember those brothers and sisters who have left our ranks during the year to meet their Creator and wish for them that they rest in eternal peace after their earthly toil among us.

YOUR EDITOR PARK YOUR WORRIES OUTSIDE YOUR BEDROOM DOOR You can get rid of worry by employing a few simple but unique spiritual methods. , The treasurer of a large business lives in the suburbs. His house is surrounded by a fence and beside the gate is a sizeable mailbox. Each night upon returning home from work, this man opens the mailbox and imaginatively deposits his worries in it.

Next morning on the way to work, he opens the mailbox, removes the worries that are still there, and takes them to his place of business, where he proceeds to do something constructive about them. He remarked, whimsically, that "somebody must come along during the night and take most of the worries out

of the mailbox, because so many seem to disappear."

If you are inclined to regard this as a rather Immature method for dealing with worries, may I remind you of two facts. This man is the efficient treasurer of one of America's great businesses, and second, the method works for him. And how can you argue against success?

You can't minimize something that works.

One thing is sure, you cannot live efficiently if you toss and turn all night long because of your worries. There is one thing that you should never do and that is to take your worries to bed with you. Always park your worries outside your bedroom door.

That is easier said then done I grant you. But that is not to say that is cannot be done How can you park your worries outside your bedroom door and keep them out of mind during the night?

Simply make up your mind not to take your worries to bed with you. This disciplinary control will condition your thinking so that you will actually be able to block worries off mentally when you retire. You can do anything with your mind that you want to do if you want to badly enough and if you discipline it. )• •( FROM LODGE 92, FORT WORTH, TEX. ARE WE PREPARED? What would you do if 30,000 or 50,HO people came into your county bringing with them only what they could carry in their bands?

The public health problems involved in a natural or II-Bomb disaster seem overwhelming. To meet them, professional health workers must rely to a great extent upon volunteer workers to carry out the many details — some of them trivial -- which add up to a well-organized civil defense program.

In such disasters, small communities would have to provide most of the medical care and public health services. The health resources of the community would be called upon to provide casualty care, public health services, special weapons defense (use of equipment to detect radiation and radioactive fall out) and health supplies.

For people outside the target area, the major job wiould be receiving and taking care of eiar-ei.3. There would be the injured and uninjured Physicians would provide ire ciliate at tk 67 on for the injurial, but they would need assistance from dentists, nurses, veterinarians, aides or anyone else who knows anything at all about mei l icine and first aid.

Let's not forget that there would continue to be births, childhood diseases, and deaths from natural causes, all of which would require medical attention. In peace or disaster medical attention -- the diagnosis and treat ment of the sick and injured -- is the responsibility of physicians regularly engaged in the practice of medicine, with the help of nurses and other medical personnel.

But in the event of an emergency, there are other important jobs which would need to be taken care of as soon as passible. Along with the injured evacuees would come many uninjured people. The sudden increase in population would present such problems as epidemic control and sanitation, which are primary concern to public health workers. These problems would be no different from the ones now present in the community, except they would be on a much larger scale.

Basic human needs remain the same -- food, water, housing and disposal of waste. It is not the responsibility of the he r -1th department to provide these things. This is not an easy task for a community that is well prepared. If the community level is not high enough to prevent outbreaks of diphtheria, whooping cough, polio or thyphoid, how can it expect to cape with them and with typhus, cholera and other more rare diseases which may appear under emergency conditions?

If your water and food supplies are responsible for an occasional case of nausea or diarrhea at present, what would happen if radioactivity and the hazards of chemical and biological warfare are added?

If your present garbage and sewage disposal methods are not efficient enough to prevent waste borne diseases, how can your community expect to avoid these diseases?

Health workers cannot do the job alone. They need your help now and they would need it even more during an emergency. TO THE YOUTH DIRECTORS I am hoping that by this time all the lodges will have appointed their Youth Directors as I have requested them by letter through the lodge secretaries in November and again in December.

We should start the New Year right by getting busy with organizing our Youth Clubs and making plans for their activities for the year. I am sure that it will be a very interesting project.

You, as Youth Director, the organizers, officers, and committees of your lodge working together in harmony will put this great project over and we will have accomplished something that we all will ' be proud of. My programs, games and other suggestive ideas will come to you from time to time once a month, twice a month, as the need may be.

Should you have any ideas and material, kindly send same to me so I could include these in my programs for the benefit of other lodges and their Youth Directors, as good material is hard to find.

If you have not yet organized your Youth Club, please do so now. You will increase the children's interest by letting them do things for themselves.

Watch over their activities, help them with their programs or problems and go with them everywhere. If you need extra help, call on your organizer's, committee or the mothers to help out. It is your duty as Youth Director to take care of these children, so please don't let them down.

You may plan parties, picnics, games, contests, benefit dances, drills, songs and many other activities that would interest the children of your community.

May I suggest that you organize your ball teams and get the children started early. They may play friends of other societies or members of neighboring lodges. You may have both boys and girls teams or a combination, depending on the amount of boys and girls available in your lodge. If you have or will organize a teem and they will represent the SPJST we, the Supreme Lodge will furnish you the bails and bats for your team, I believe that a short program with each monthly meeting, followed by refreshments would stimulate interest and increase the attendance in our adult

As you have probably been keeping up with my reports during the year, you noticed that we have set a goal to double the sales in 1957 and I am happy to say that due to the untireing effort of both our District and Lodge organizers, we have made a very nice progress toward our goal. District No. 5 has doubled their sales and they are still in there pitching for the other districts, helping them so we would double our sales state wide. District No. 3 and District No. 7 are running neck to neck and I am confident that they too will go over the top.

Now in order that we double our sales state wide, I am making a plea to all your members to please look around for some possible prospects among your friends, neighbors, fellow employees, or your immediate family and call the organizers of your lodge and help them write these prospects up as members.

We need your help! We do appreciate your help; and we sincerely thank you for your cooperation.

Tell your guests how worried you are about the country, that there are a lot of Communists among us, and they are going to take over. Tell them that there is certain to be a war and that we will never recover from it.

Assert that the juvenile problem is so bad that young people are all going to the dogs. Then tell them of all the cases of illness and adversity you know about.

Doesn't it even affect you just to read what I have written? You can imagine, therefore that this kind of conve$ation will do to your guests. You will haveinfected all of them with your worries just as surely as if you had a bad cold and spread the virus all around the room.

Now, continue the experiment by deliberately infecting your friends with faith, hope and optimism. Observe how their mood goes up or down depending upon whether you infect •.them with faith or worry. Of course, you will have mare trouble with some than with others, for some people have a strong faith and it will be hard to shake them with worrisome negativisms. That is another evidence that when one fills his mind and heart and soul with faith, worry does not easily take root.

An important question to ask yourself is this, "Am I a healthful factor in the world or am I spreading mental and spiritual ill health by my constant worry talk to my family and friends." Don't be a spreader of fear, disease of mind and soul. Don't be a worry infecting center. ) • 4 •(

Bless you all! ! • ols • SANTA VISITED LODGE JAROMIR 54 West, Texas Busy, busy Santa accepted the invitation of Lodge Jaromir 54, to visit their annual Christmas Party, which was held in their lodge Wednesday, December 18, to a good attendance, but by no means all of the membership of this big lodge.

Keeping the program to a minimum so that the squirming small fry in the front seats wouldn't explode with excitement and waiting, a rendition of Christmas Carols played by lovely Miss Soukup on her accordian and the Choral group's rendition of Christmas songs completed the prograln.

It was lightning in the North and Brother Robert Cervenka, president of Lodge Jaromir warned everyone that it won't be long now. Suddenly, here comes busy old St. Nick, hurrying along, waving greetings to the membership and a wave of little heads, curly ones, combed ones with unruly cow-licks slicked down converged upon the gentleman to accept gifts of fruit and nuts.

The diAribution of presents followed with hilarious laughter when some brother received a gift "befittin" a lady, for the gifts were mixed purposely.

"A Little Child Shall Lead Us", manifested itself in the form of one little boy his heart so full of God's love for the beneficient St. Nick that he picked up the biggest present at had and with outstretched arms in gesture of Christian Love he offered the gentlemen Santa as a gift. It struck a soft chord in many a heart, to remind us how we oldsters should behave toward each other. He then proceeded to tag along after St. Nick wishing him God's speed.

Your Editor talked briefly to the good folks of Jaromir along this theme of brotherly love in our Lodge work and then the good sisters served a Christmas supper which was "super."

West, Texas Dear Girls: The City of West broadcasting system is piping Christmas music into the ether and everyone is caught up in the excit€1rnent of Christmas and its activity. The shops are full, people busy but smiling.

I hope that this Christmas 1957, will be a wonderful one for you and your family. For the "shut-ins", may it be a sea son of happy visiting with your loved ones and friends; one of happy memories; one of forgetting for the moment of ourselves and troubles; to revel in the occasion of Christmas and all of its activities.

We Americans, are fortunate, indeed, for the many blessings that we take for granted. Were we in other parts of the world today, we probably wouldn't have too much to be thankful for other than the fact that we're still alive.

The year 1957 has been good to our fraternal brotherhood, too. We have grown in numbers and insurance. Our fervent wish for a Home for the Aged, has become a reality. We have worked, and, worked hard for the success of our goals in the Jubilee Year and have cause to be happy and possibly proud.

The. Youth Organizations in our order are springing up on all sides — they are our future leader material and our direst need is to nurture their continuous growth so that their roots may go deep into our fraternal work. Our busy sisters, mothers, teachers and sisters of other professions are courageously taking on this, additional responsibility to guide this, youth, and shield it, to encourage it to try its own wings under the mantel of their respective lodges. Let's get behind this Youth movement next year and give it the "Push" it needs to get it rolling into a mountain of new young blood in our midst and new juvenile memhership in our order.

FOR UNTO YOU IS BORN TODAY A SAVIOR At, nand a camp fire, centuries ago, in the hills of Palestine, a group of sheperds huddled for warmth. It was night and it was cold. Their sheep were • close at hand guarded by large vicious and well-trained dogs.

During the lull in their talk around the campfire, the shepherds noticed with surprise that a strange man had joined •their circle. The surprise quickly turned •to anger. Why had their dogs not barked or turned upon the intruder?

"Please," said the stranger, "I mean • no harm. My wife lies shivering in a stable with a newborn son. I saw your fire and came to beg of you a few coals with • which to build them a fire. Do not blame your dogs, you see, I have a way with animals."

• The shepherds were kindley men.

'Take some coals," the ysaid. "But how will you carry them?"

The man reached fearlessly with one hand into the fire, picked up some blazing coals and placed them on his heavy blue cloak. Then, with a gesture of thanks, he left.

Tto shepherds were amazed. As they talked, their fire suddenly seemed to glow all the more brightly and the sky came alive with brilliant stars. One • brilliantly shining star shot toward them • and lit up the scene around the shepherds with dazzling brilliance.

They were afraid, until a voice said: "Fear not: bring you good tidings of joy -- for unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior — ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger."

The shepherds left their flocks and took the road to Bethlehem, the City of David. There, they found the stable and there, in the glow of a few small coals, lay woman.

Nearby, in a manger, slept a beautiful Child. And, over the Child a man was spreading a blue cloak. The shepha cis recognized the man as the stranger who begged for some coals with which to build a fire.

And then they knew the meaning of what they had seen. They knelt in reverence, then hurried away to spread the good news.

Each of us spreads these tidings anew every time we say, "Merry Christmas."

Dobrunka wanted to say something to him, but he disappeared and she never saw him again.

Now she was able to run out of the cave and look once more upon God's green world. Now for the first time in her life she knew what it meant to be strong and well. She threw herself on the ground and kissed it. She hugged the slender birches and danced around them simply bursting with love for every living thing. She reached out longing hands towards the town and would probably have gone there running all the dis tance but she remembered that she must stay where she was.

Meanwhile strange things were happening at the palace. 1Vressangers brought word that the king was returning from wet- and there was great rejoicing on every side. The king's own house h e'd was particularly happy for service under the new mistress was grow ing more unpleasant every day. As for Zloboha and her mother, it must be confessed that they were a little frightened over the outcome of their plot.

Finally the king arrived. Zloboha with smiling face went to meet him. He tok her to his heart with great tenderness and from that moment Zloboha had no fear that he would recognize her.

A great feast was at once prepared, for the king had brought home with him, many of his nobles to rest and make merry after the hardships of war.

Zloboha, as she sat at Dobromil's side could not take her eyes off him. The handsome young soldier caught her fancy and she was rejoiced that she had put Dobrunka out of the way.

When they finished feasting, Dobrornil asked her:

"Sit down, Dobrunka," he said, "and spin. I should like to see you main at the distaff."

Zloboha at once sat down behind the wheel. She put her foot to the treadle and started the wheel.

Instantly the wheel sang out and this is what it sang: "Master, master, don't believe her!

She's a cruel and base deceiver!

She is not your own sweet wife!

She destroyed Dobrunka;s life!"

Zloboha sat stunned and motionless while the king looked wildly about to see where the song came from.

When he could see nothing, he told her to spin some more. Trembling, she obeyed. Hardly had she put her foot to the treadle when the voice again sang out: "Master, master, haste away!.

To the woods without delay!

In a cave your wife restored, Yearns for you, her own true lord!"

At those words Dobromil released Zlo-k boha and ran like mad out of the chamber and down into the courtyard where he ordered his swiftest horse to be saddled instantly. The attendants, frightened by his appearance, lost no time and almost at once Dobromil was on his horse and flying overhill and dale so fast that the horse's hoofs scarcely touched the earth.

When he reached the forest he did not know where to look for the cave.

He rode straight into the wods until a white doe crossed his path. Then the horse in fright plunged to one side and pushed through bushes and undergrowth to the base of a big rock. Dobomil dismounted and tied the horse to a tree.

He climed the rock and there he saw something white gleaming among the trees. He crept forward cautiously and suddenly found himself in front of a cave. Imagine then his joy, when he entered and found his own dear wife, Dobrunka.

As he kissed her and looked into her gentle face he said:

Dr. Charles Novosad Reports

Thirty Days Behind The Iron Curtain

Surgeon Charles Novosad has returned from. the Antarctic where, among other duties, he wet-nursed 50 Alaskan huskies. Dr. Novasad, serving as a Navy physician, lived for a year with 86 scientists and technicians at the International Geophysical Year outpost at McMurdo, on Ross Island.

Dear Readers, I was asked to write an article on living conditions, customs, clothing, etc. in Czechoslovakia. As I'm not much of a writer. I'll try to fulfill this request. Readers just bear with me and maybe things will turn out for the best.

First, I'll try to describe to you the conveniences of an average home. I visited only five homes, and they were of my relatives.

In the kitchen there is a built-in wood stove (on the farm) made of putty tile. It is a rather large stove, and as neat as can ben. Than there is a china closet for dishes and a small table for everyday use. and usually a large table in another room. Water was not piped in their home and is brought in in a bucket from the well. No water heaters or electric fans, but every farm home has electric lights.

People are very conservative, for their belongings last them a life time.

Beds all have feather beds on them, even while we were there. The home I was in, is the home where my father was born and was built by my grandfather, Holasek, more than 65 years ago.

It still is a nice home. To me it is just as pretty as it must have been 65 years ago.

In the City, usually every housewife has an electric oven, hot plate and a stove that will burn coal or wood.

The furniture is pretty, I mean plain, but very substantial I'm sure in the homes that are owned by people that make more money, even live better, As we tourned, one day we stopped at The women that live in the country, a village and here we talked with the all work in the fields. He made the trip when supplies were flown and dropped to men at a base near the Pole, the most isolated station in Antarctica. Temperatures sometimes dr, )n to 100 degrees below zero there.

Contact with the outside world came rarely during his stay. Dr. Novosad reports there are about 1000 Americans now living on the ice and 2000 more working in supporting capacities.

They have occasional visitors, too. At least seven congressmen are expected to visit. the base.

There the shopping is done as it is needed, because very few homes have refrigerators .When they go shopping, with them they take a knitted small sack, in this the groceries are brought home.

They go from store to store and drop the articles in this shopping bag. The bread isn't wrapped and many carry only in their hands the rohliks, vegetables, or fruit are all dropped in this bag as paper bags are scarce and paper must be conserved.

There are no super Markets. The stores are all small and everything is behind the counters, like it was Ore 25 years ago. The peculiar thing is that nearly everything is sold in separate stores, for instance; Milk in "mlekarna", tobacco sold in separate small stores, bread, koblihy, kolace in "pekarna", candy in "Cukarna" and meat is also sold in separate stores. Buying meat in small villages is a big problem. Meat can be bought on certain days and it is so expensive that faAniliet just can't afford to buy it.

For instance, my uncle in Lovcice, Vaclav Trnka had to speak three weeks beforehand so that he could have meat when we visited him. He got it all-right, but for the next two months his son's family and he wont have any meat.

They live on a farm, but can't butcher a hog for their own use, everything has to be delivered and sold to the state at a cheap price. This is done with everything they raise, such as grain, potatoes, milk and eggs. What a life, but what can anyone do, but make the best of it.

"All too often weakness occurs after respiratory infections — particularly when dietary standards have been lowered. The person who has eaten sensibly during illness is more likely to weather the storm of possible complications. Influenza — Asiatic or otherwise — can result in many physical disorders that a proper diet might prevent."

A preliminary estimate from the U.S. National Health Survey indicates that almost 12 million new cases of acute respiratory diseases involving at least one day in bed occured in 1957.

About Your Health AUSTIN — Texas' new "hazardous substance" law is now in effect, aimed at restricting the sale of poisons that last year claimed at least 15 young lives in this state.

Chief target of the law is thallium sulphate, an insecticide and rodenticide. But all substances, with few exceptions, which are hazardous for humans are included.

The law was passed by the recent legislature with strong backing from the State Department of Health. The task of administering and enforcing it now falls, to the state health commission with the help of city and county health officers.

In Houston alone last year, more than 50 cases of accidental thallium sulphate poisoning were reported. Almost as many occured in San Antonio. In most instances the deadly material was mixed with graham crackers or vanilla wafer crumbs as a base, which made it especially attractive to children.

Even before the law became effective Galveston authorities banned the sale of products containing more than three per cent thallium salts.

The substance can kill by absorption throught the skin or by inhalation as well as by ingestion. Compounded originally for use only by profassional insect and rodent exterminators, there is no known antidote for the almost tasteles product.

Even when the case of accidental poisoning does not end fatally, the victim's vision is often impaired and his sense of balance upset.

With the law now in effect, it will threafter be unlawful to sell any product containing more than one per cent of any thallium salt.

It will also be unlawful to mix any poisonous substance with food or drink.

Exceptions are water or a mixture which has lost its identity as food and is not likely to be mistaken as food for human consumption.

Manufacturers of hazardous , substances, the new law says, must spell out on the container the nature of the hazard, first-aid treatments if any, and instructions for safe handling, storage, and disposal.

Violations are punishable by $1,000 fine or a year imprisonment or both.

The aihrent is so widespread that it involves 95 of every 100 persons and is still increasing.

It is estimated that there are now one billion cavities in the mouths of Americans, mostly childrein of alemen:tary school age. And for every cavity a dentist fills, six are left, unfilled because of failure to visit a dentist.

Dental authorities say the situation is now so acute that at its present rate of increase, within 10 years decay will have turned us into a nation of dental cripples.

Children develop cavities at about the same rate as do adults — approximately one per child per . year. But whereas one-third of the adult need for fillings is being met, only one-fifth of the cavities in children's teeth are being repared. Perhaps the reason is that so many parents still cling to the totally false notion that so-called "baby" teeth are unimportant because they are temporary. The frequent result is that good dental health for children is still a relatively scarce commodity.

There is one positive step all parents can take to avoid a fate of toothlessness among their children. It's a simple step, requiring only that the youngsters be taken to a dentist for tooth and gum. inspection before being enrolled in school each fall.

The dentist will follow a careful routine in making the inspection. He will painlessly probe all tooth surfaces, looking for signs of impending trouble. Using an ingeniously simple little mirror, he can check even the most difficultto-get-to corners, removing accumulations of "tartar", the name given to incrusted salivary mucous and. food residue.

If spots of decay are found, he will remove it and fill the cavity with a material called "amalgam," a combination of mercury and bits of silver. Or perhaps he will choose a porcelain cement, also in use as a filling material.

Before the visit is concluded the dentist will have tutored the youngster in good dental hygiene at home — such things as when and how to brush his

Strana 27 teeth, and how to make an excellent dentifrice from baking soda or table salt.

When enough children have received such instruction, and. are encouraged by parents to follow them, we will be well on the way toward avoiding the fate predicted for us: that within a decade we will be a nation of dental cripples.

She was buried just a couple of weeks ago, this usually alert woman who was accustomed to doing her own d cleaning. It happens to someone ssdnewhere practically eyery day.

Many victims of home dry cleaning accidents, like the woman above, routinely used flammable liquids to clean curtains or clothes. Others, were beginners, motivated by economy or convenience.

Most or them were ordinarily sensible with full awareness of t1 peril of gasoline or naptha or other dry cleaning preparations. One moment of carelessness to which we are all prone, turned them from happy homemakers into sad statistics.

Explosions are only one of several risks run by the thoughtless do-it-yourself operators. Some cleaning agents are flammable; others give off injurious vapors; still others are harmful to human skin. All could be lethal if taken internally.

So inflammable is gasoline, that to keep it stored at home is to openly court disaster. Gasoline emits vapors to form explosive mixtures in the air. A transient spark from a light switch or cigarette and the mixture may be ignited.

Vapors may flow in an invisible stream for 200 feet from the point of use, flashing back and exploding the main container when touched off by flame or spark. Static electricity generated by synthetic or silk fabric being cleaned is fully capable of igniting the fumes of gasoline or naptha.

Care must be taken to avoid inhaling concentrated vapors, since the common ones — excluding turpentine — are anesthetics. Some, after prolonged exposure, are injurious to internal organs.

If gasoline or naptha can dissolve dirt and grime on fabrics, obviously these some fluids are able to cut though the natural oils of human skin.

"For the country as a whole, death benefits paid in the first nine months of this year were $194,860,000 greater than in the corresponding period of last year and $981, 377,000 more than in the first nine months of 1947, an increase of 98 percent.
