But I have been amused by reading the report from the meeting of District Six here it is reported that two of the visiting speakers objected to criticism of our leaders. I may be wrong, but I think that even criticism may be brotherly, benevolent, stimulating and healthy for all concerned. I am not in favor of malevolent, querulous, prejudiced, fault-finding and small-minded mud-slinging. But I feel that intelligent criticism is the gentle process by which the cumbersome mass is distilled into a finer product. A diamond cannot be polished without friction, nor a man without criticism.

And I have discovered that if I am unjustly criticized, I don't get any relief or any pleasure in criticizing others. But when I examine my own habits and find out that my criticism is not merely a reflection of my own opinion, but is based upon true judgment of values, then I am strong enough to stand any criticism, even if it borders on persecution.

A MAN SHOULD LEARN TO GIVE careful . , heed to any critical comments, suggestions,, or hints that any other person ma.y give. Other people see me as I can't see .myself, and I will do well not to brush off their opinion about me whatever those opinions-.may happen , to be. If we look back over our lives, truthfully analyzing all phases of living, we may be able to see that some of our own progress has . been due not-:so much to the flattery of others, not so much to the careless back-slapping approval of our actions, but rather to some unexpected, unwanted, uninvited, bitter, and stupid criticism. It frequently made us mad. It burned and hUrt, but it was the best medicine which corrected some of our faults.

INTELIGENT CRITICISM IS THE gentle process by which our attention is directed to the excellent. The most noble critic is not an enemy but rather the rival toward the same goal. Criticism is the child of reflection. If in our criticism we try to be constructive, then we do not criticize merely to reiterate our own oppinion. Our purpose will be to , point out values that are important and that will help all concerned. If we criticize our directors and officers, they ought to thank us, because a constructive criticism develops a stronger character and brings a more complete appreciation of value.

We were very happy to have one of our ex-players back with us for a few pleasant hours and to help us celebrate our victory -dinner. Eddie olenovsky was coming through Bib "D" on a business trip to Fort Worth so he took us up on our invitation. We want Willie and Carlyn to know that the team appreciated this wonderful dinner and we will always cherish this special evening as another memorable occasion.

CA One afternoon last s-ring I had some business in the northern section of the city of Houston and was leisurely returning home. I followed three or four cars ahead of rue and I was followed by one or two other cars. A slim police officer standing' in the middle of the street ahead of us stopped all the cars. Then he walked from car to car, asking for I a driver's license.

At firen I thought that it was a mu] tine cheek-up. Then he informed me I that my speed was 25 miles in the 15mile school zone. I meekly explained that I was following the other car ahead of me and that all of them traveled at about the same speed. All of us got the seceding traffic ticket. All of us were victims Of Houston's latests en103 = cement hinovation. The sight of stopped cars, a string of them. is now a becoming familiar in the radar areas.

That's the way radar points out speeders--rapidly, efficiently, mercilessly.

In fact, the flood of traffic violations cases in corporation courts has been so heavy that one municipal judge recently asked the city for help. He said he needed one more court to handle the overflow.

The future of radar traffic control in EciKten is leright and sparkling, police officers feel. The head of the traffic safety division is, so pleased he has asked for more units to be delivered as soon as possible.

"With radar we can greatly reduce speeding, the prime factor in accidents," he said. Be hopes to cut accident and fatality figures by 40 to 60 per cent in the next few years.

WITH RADAR the past few years, is to select the areas where violations most frequently occur.

By rigid enforcement in these areas, offenders can most easily be captured and the number of offenses reduced.

With radar, it is possible to select the worst speeding lanes and concentrate on them until they are under control.

The police radar device operates on the same principle as radar finding equipment perfected during World War II. Constant microwave signals are sent out to bounce off a vehicle and echo back to a receiver.

This reflected energy is electroiically translated into miles per hour on. a recording tape. To stop speeders, the monitoring officer radios another officer stationed down the road, who in turn flags down the offender.

When two or more vehicles are in the area, the unit gives preference to the fastest, or to every one, as it happened in my case.

Those are the words of one magazine editor• who has had more influence on more people in more countries than any other editor. He publishes his magazine in seventeen languages and four editions in Braille. His name is De Witt Wallace. His magazine is The Reader's Digest. Wallace's fact-filled little magazine is read by 75,000,000 people the world over. The Reader's Digest has the greatest circulation of any magazine.

But the reason for Wallace's influence doesn't lie in his vast readership.

It stems even more from the unique hold which his magazine has on its readers. Tney trust it implicitly.

Again and again, this has been demonstrated.

In the spring of 1951, the propaganda chief of the Red guerilla forces in Indo-China was so impressed by an attack on Communism which appeared in the French edition of the Digest that he deserted to the anti-Communists.

The employees of the newspaper Mainichi, Tokyo's biggest, were so affected by an expose of Stalinist activities in the labor movement, published in the Japanese edition, that they started a successful revolt against the Communists who had seized control of the All-Japan Newspaper Union.

The U. E. State Department itself has said that the material on Communism which ran in the Italian edition aided markedly in the Red electoral defeats in Italy in 1951.

Not that the Digest's influence has been confined solely to the political sphere.

A single article advocating the raising of soy beans, which ran in the Spanish edition, literally launched a soy been boom in Latin America. WHOLE WHEAT AND WHITE FLOUR For centuries man ground the whole wheat kernel, including the wheat germ, and baked for himself a loaf of bread that sustained life. Then, not so many years ago, s o meone conceived the idea of making white bread but in order to keep the flour for a long period without spoiling, millers began using only the white, starchy part of the kernel, throwing away the wheat germ as useless waste.

In the light of our present wide knowledge of nutrition we know this was u bad mistake, but nevertheless it was atone and eventually only about two per cent of the bread sold in this country was of the whole wheat variety.

This is not only true of bread, but also of cereals. In the good old days the millers made excellent cereals of whole grains which they cracked, or ground to a fine meal, and these were the foods which made our ancestors hardy men and women.

Deficiency foods have caused illness of all kinds and one of the worst offenders is refined white flour and all the products made from it. Whatever your preference has been in the past— griddle cakes, spoon bread, 'pancakes, waffles, scones, tea biscuits or plain sliced white bread — you could do well to decide never again to eat anything made of white flour.

Of course, white flour is now being "enriched" or "fortified" by the millers, with vitamins and minerals. But isn't it stupid to take out of the whole grain practically all of its vital elements and then shoot back in one or two of them?

Why not leave the grain just as it was made by nature and use it intact?

The truth of the matter is that white flour is an impoverished food and will not alone sustain life for any length of time. Experiments with animals have shown that they will die when placed on a diet of white flour, white rice, and other denatured foods.

While it is true that, weight for weight, more of the atoms of white bread will be digested than whole wheat bread, yet the so-called indigestible portion contains bulk which is essential for that peristaltic action needed to prevent constipation.

Take one grain of wheat. Cut it into small slices. Slide it under a microscope, and look what you have!

1. The germ of embryo which comprises about one and one-half per cent of the wheat.

2. The kernel or endosperm, which makes up 85 per cent of the grain to be used as nutrient for the embryo. This

kernel contains gluten and starch.

3. The bran, or outer skin, composed of cellulose, which makes up 13 to 14 per cent of the whole. Bran, ground into flour, is rich in mineral matter.

All this in a single WHOLE grain of wheat.

Now compare the nutrient content of whole wheat and of white flour. There is about 10 per cent of good protein (22 g)n. in 225 gm, of flour) in whole wheat flour, or nearly one-half the daily required allowance. Whole wheat not only contains MORE protein than white flour but its protein has a higher biologogical value. ° 4•( THE AGING PROCESS

The human body is built to last normally for a great many years — some experts say at least 100. Each vital organ is bulkier and more powerful than it needs to be to meet the requirements of ordinary living. This excess over what is actually required to keep us going makes up the reserves on which we draw under conditions of stress. As we grow older our reserves silently and gradually grow less. This depreciation takes place faster in some persons than in others. That is why there can be no fixed dividing line between the ending of maturity and the beginning of senescence, or old age. Some folks look and feel old at 50; others seem young at 60 or 70.

There are no diseases or disabilities so peculiar to aging that they are found only in the aged. But certain diseases are more common in the advanced years than in the earlier years of life — notably arthritis, diabetes, nephritis, cancer, and diseases of the heart and blood vessels. An ailing part or organ may be able to compensate for damage or loss of function for a long time before it calls attention to itself through pain or discomfort or some other warning signal. By that time the power of selfdefense or self-repair upon which the physician largely relies for the success of his treatment may be gone. The us°

With our greatly improved chances of living to old age, and what that means to us individually and collectively, we should be just as much interested in having the examining physician find out how healthy we are as in having him search for evidence of disease. Being healthy is not the same as being not sick. Health is always relative, like beauty or success. No matter how much we have we could do with a little more.

We may think that we have to put up with a few physical inconveniences as we grow older; but much of wlfat we blame on our increasing years 'may be avoided, or at least mitigated, by taking advantage of wise medical supervision and guidance while there is still time.

Finding out how healthy a person is may take a lot more time than finding, out whether he has something the mat ter with him. That sort of information cannot be obtained from the man, who hurries into the doctor's office simply to have his heart listened to because he has learned of the sudden death. by heart failure of a friend with whOin he ate lunch yesterday.

The health examination, as it ought to be, is a consultation, with the phys.i-; cian and his patient as consultants.

The main objective of such a consultation is 'to work out a program fop living which takes into account ,hotly the assets and the liabilities that, appear as the years pass. To do this, re,: quires, first, a careful search for evi-, dence of beginning diea.se or some re-, medial defect which needs prompt i.t,(tention; and, second, an inquiry into habits of life, including diet, occiipa tion, leisure-time activities, rest, exer cise, mental habits, sources of anxiety, and so on. With such information to guide him, the trained and alert physi cian can tell his "consultant " in what ways, if any , his pattern of living should be changed in order to conserve those reserves which can be counted on for the years to come.

We, the Resolution Committee of Jan Rosicky Lodge No. 110, in Kaufman, Texas, wish to express our sympathy to the family of our departed Sister ANNA CECH who died so suddenly on Thursday, October 18, 1956, at the age of 50 years, 2 months and 24 days.

Also we wish to express our deep sympathy to the family of our lodge Brother ANTON BABOVEC

Ten-year-old Judy Turner was brought to my husband's medical office by her mother and father, who were terribly concerned over their daughter's increasing loss of appetite. Thin and nervous, Judy burst into tears when my husband asked her why she wouldn't eat.

"I can't eat," she wept. "Something's wrong at home and they won't tell me about it. Mother cries when she thinks I'm not watching and Daddy's so grim.

Please, Dr. Barkins, I'm so scared. Make them' tell me what's wrong."

It was true that Judy's parents were trying to conceal from her the fact that their marriage seemed headed for a breakup, but they didn't realize that she would detect some form of deception and so would worry more than if they have tcld her- t1Sie truth, on a level she understood.

Children rarely can be successfully left out of family happenings. Sooner or later, important crises must be faced, and tomorrow, in such instances, is never any.easier or kinder than today.

Besides, children can recognize worry on ,a grownup face as quickly as we can spot measles on theirs. The bright smile that flashes on when Junior approaches and turns right off again the moment he leaves is seldom' convincing.

Thousands of children from coast to coast are victims of a kind of misguided .overprotection practiced nowadays by many well-meaning parents. They are being raised with little or no preparation for withstanding the realities of life.

At once, somehow, they became, with us, an organized army of work and constant prayer. There. was no sense of panic. They devoted themselves to amusing George, encouraging John and me, and looking after the youngest ones in our group. Even before George was well again I found Myself overcome, not merely with their giving, but even more with the significance of what . sharing in his illness had taught our other four children: the power and comfort of prayer; the joy and strength in family unit; the happiness in doing good.
