Tato schdze musi bYti svoldna die nafizeni stanov jednou roene, aby vYbor, redaktor a vydavatele projednali vSechny otazky ku zlep§eni Vestniku. Tentokrat do schnze byli pozvani te2 nahradnici, aby se podileli na jednani, a aby poznali, co vSechno se projednava ku zdokonaleni spolkoveho organu. Nahra.dnici jsou brat•i Otto HanuS od kadu 66 ye Waco, Frank V. 8 pa,nhel od l'ad• 'Oslo 47 v' Seaton, a Dr. Eduard Mi8ek od tadu 155 v Austinu.

MINUTES OF THE PRESS COMMITTEE The Press Committee held its annual meeting on Saturday, January 2, 1954, in the directors' ,room at the SPJST headquarters, in Temple, Texas.

Brother Jos. Hornak, chairman of the Committee, called the meeting to order at 9:45 a. m. Present were: Sisters Antotonic Horak and Frances Olexa; Stephen Vaicik, editor; Jos. F. Holasek, publisher; alternates: Otto Harms, Frank V. Spanhel and Eduard Micek. As guests Were present: Vincent Ondrusek, director Navratil, president Marek, secretary Chupick, and treasurer Koliha.

The Supreme Lodge officers extended their greetings and welcome to the Press Committee, wished the members present a successful meeting and later they had left to attend to their respective duties.

Previous minutes of the meeting held on January 17, 1953, in Houston, were read and accepted.

The chairman of the Press Committee submitted his report as follows: Dear Sisters and Brothers: My report is brief on account of my intention to discuss all the letters, requests, and grievances later during the meeting.

I report that the editor and I made a trip to West in connection with our official paper.

In addition, I made a trip to Fayetteville to attend the meeting of the Supreme Lodge and to discuss with the Supreme Lodge, among other things, two important questions: 1. As a chairman of the Press Committee I came to the conclusion that the last convention • held in Houston, by sanctioning the publication of the Czech novel "Na Kresach", had failed to respect and consider the article 64 of our By-laws. I did not wish to make my own ruling. After discussing it, with the Supreme Lodge, it was decided to drop the entire matter.

2. I also wanted to know whose duty it would be to locate an assistant or a substitute to do the editorial work in case of illness, resignation or other incapacity of the editor. I was told that the Supreme Lodge would employ a new editor. I do wish to have this matter discussed more fully in today's meeting.

All in all, the year of 1953 passed quietly. Our SPJST has shown a considerable progress. The Vestnik, our official paper, edited by Brother Valcik, played its part.

In the first place, I wish to express my appreciation to Brothers and Sisters of the SPJST for their assistance to make our paper what it is.

The Publication Committee alone, or with the aid of the Supreme Lodge, should study this problem. It is for the best interest of the entire SPJST. My sincere thanks to the Publication Committee for its support, its confidence, and its co-operation.

Stephen Valcik The question presented by Editor Val cik was discussed with a great deal of interest. Sister Olexa moved that the Press Committee makes its recommendation to the Supreme Lodge to grant Brother Valcik the right to look for assistant. Brother Micek made an amendment to the motion of Sister Olexa that the chairman of the Publication Comittee be authorized to attend the meeting of the Supreme Lodge or to send his substitute. The motion of Sister Olexa with the amendment of Brother Micek was accepted unanimously.

Brother Holasek gave a short report and explained the delay of one issue on account of fire in the printing plant a few hours before going to press.

Brother Micek in his short report thanked the printing office for its cooperation in preparing the children's page in Czech. He stated that the many letters received by him and complimenting him for what he has been doing, are the only reward and compensation. He thanked the editor for making favorable mentinons of the Department of Slavonic Languages, the Czech Club, and the Czech Literary Society. He expressed his pleasure for being invited to the meeting.

Chairman Hornak requested the Supreme Lodge officer to bring forth any suggestion, any grievance, or any recommendation regarding the Vestnik or the editorial performance.

President Marek expressed his satisfaction personally, and added that it was his impression from the outside reports that the Vestnik is liked generally.

Brothers Chupick, Koliha, and Navratil concurred with the statements of Brother Marek.

A letter written April 23, 1953, by Brother Hafernik of El Campo, was read.

Brother Hornak stated that he had Personally taken the matter up with Brother Hafernik, but that he failed to get a reply.

A resolution from District Three was read and discussed. It suggested that the Czech and the English sections of the Vestnik could alternate in the front part of the Vestnik. After a considerable discussion, Brother Micek moved, seconded by Brother Harms, to leave the arrangement as it stands, but to give the editor the right to make the change only for a special occasion with the advance agreement with the Press Committee. The motion wised unanimously.

When the matter of new business came up, it was agreed that the editor should work dut some advertisements for the last page of the Vestnik.

It was also agreed that the Vestnik should have more pictures of deserving members, The expenses of the cuts of any outstanding, honored, or deserving members should be defrayed by the Supreme Lodge.

Next meeting of the Committee will be held in January, 1955, in Temple. The meeting adjourned at 3:15 p. m.

Those distant members feel the ties of brotherhood far more than some of us who brush our shoulders with one another quite often.

To some of the distant members, the editor of the Vestnik is a total stranger.

Yet they write. Here is one greeting in particular which I wish to mention in the Vestnik. It came from Italy, addressed to 6402 Praha (not Prague, which is just the Czech way of spelling the same name). This member—unknown to me—writes: "I've been wanting to write about our visit to Rome and about port of Italy, Tuscany.

"It's been so interesting that we can spend all our spare time sightseeing and never cover everything.

"We like Italy very well because of its historical background and natural beauties.

"It's been more like a dream and I shall be a little sad when our time is up to leave. I wish everyone could make a trip to Europe. It is a different world.

"Best wishes to you and your family from, "The Burgins."

The following day I received another greeting, this time postcard by air mail, saying: "We are spending Christmas Eve in Istanbul, Turkey. We had a chance to see only the most interesting places here, and shopped a little. Wish we could stay several days. The Burgins."

Now, would someone be kind ,enough to tell me who the Burgins are? Could I get their present address in Europe that I may write to them and thank them for their remembrance? There is such a thing as courtesy, even for a busy editor.

LETT NEW YEAR'S MEDITATION This is and end and a beginning. The past year with its successes and failures will be a matter of record, but the new -year usually brings new hope, new ambition and new opportunities for service.: The new year will bring new faces in the leadership among many of our lodges.

Those who take a solemn obligation should assume their responsibilities seriously; otherwise they should not have accepted their offices, It is beyond all doubt that much of the success and prosperity of each lodge depends upon its president and officers. Earnest, faithful and enthusiastic leadership is required to stimulate activity and cooperation on a group level in any organization.

Let us turn our faces to the rosy dawn of each new day with renewed courage in our ability to master every situation and strive to build our lives better than we have ever done before. Each new year sees the hope of a new day, the other side of the hill, the corner just ahead, the bend in the road; the turn of the year is the beginning of a new period in the fascinating mystery of the future.

May we forget all that has hindered or troubled us during the past year and look forward with confidence to the future. May the year 1954 contain just enough of struggle to make us prove our strength, just enough of disappointments to fix our resolutions more firmly, and just enough of the bitter in life to make us appreciate the sweet. What three other things could bring such zeal in life?

'The festivities of the holidays are over and there is the nice year ahead of us. I hope it will mean a marked advancement and improvement for our lodge, motivated by keen interest of all sisters and brothers. The cooperation of each member is needed, with patience, high resolve and perseverance on the part of the officers and members, always remembering that nothing great is accomplished without enthusiasm. Let us take up what is essential and useful, proceed with confidence and understanding, looking to the future unafraid.

Now, as the year unfolds, may we learn that art of great value: Make new friends and keep the old. • Eleven proposed amendments will 'appear on the Nov. 2 general election ballot.

One would permit women to serve on juries. Voters rejected this proposal in 1949, but backers are hopeful it will carry now.

Another proposal, rejected in 1951, will also come up again.

It would boost the ceiling on payments for old age assistance, aid to the needy blind, and aid to dependent children to $42 millions. The measure sponsored by State Sen. Doyle Willis of Fort Worth, would also open old age assistance rolls to public inspection.

Another proposed amendment would let county officers serve four-year terms.

They now serve two years.

The four-year terms would be effective immediately for certain offices. For other offices, the longer terms would not go into effect until Jan. 1, 1957.

Other proposed amendments would: Fix pay scales for legislators, and provide that the legislature could set salaries for the lieutenant governor, attorney general, comptroller, treasurer, land commissioner and secretary of state.

The lawmakers' pay would be set at $25 a day for the first 120 days of a session, with nothing thereafter or between sesions. Legislators now receive $10 a day for the first 120 days and $5 a day for the rest of the session.

Allow interchange of credit toward retirement benefits for employment divided between service as a teacher and as a state employe.

Divert an estimated $6,000,000 from the Confederate pension fund to a state office building fund. The pension fund is derived from a two-cent state property tax.

Sometimes this is called fiat money, because its value stems from government fiat (or decree) that it shall become legal tender, which means that it must be accepted if offered in payment of a debt. In its most extreme sense, however, this latter term applies to the "printing press' money that governments turn off on printing presses when they are in need, and which they require that people accept in payment of the government's debts. Examples are the Greenbacks issued in the United States during the Civil War and the Treasury Notes issued in Britain in 1914.

A major objection to such unbacked currency, especially to our friend Jones, who is wearing himself down while building up his stocks of it, is that there is no guarantee that it will retain its value. Unlike gold or silver that could be melted down and sold for approximately what was given up for it in the first place unbacked currency is just a receipt or an "I.O.U.," an "I.O.U." whose value may change at any time as a result of govern-mental policies, deliberate devaluation, or inflationary pressure. And if its value does not change, our friend Jones can do nothing about it.

Franz Pick, publisher of the annual $25-a-copy World Currency Report, says that the business balance sheets prepared in "paper dollars of annually diminishing value" â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the very thing in which Jones trusts â&#x20AC;&#x201D; are "financial comic books."

Bank Money

Thus far, however, we have dealt with only the small portion of modern money.

Most of what is spent to pay bills and the rent and to buy houses, construct buildings and turn the wheels of industry is not the government-produced bills and coins discussed above, but is "bank money." In parts of Europe this is basically the bank note; in the United States, Canada and Britain it is primarily the check. Checks and bank notes do the work of money because people have faith that they can be converted into money on demand.

Long ago, however, the banks learned that as long as people would use checks or bank notes the banks could lend out far more money than they actually have, in a sense "creating" this bank money on their books. A prospective borrower promises the bank that he will repay the loan that he is asking the bank to make.

If the bank thinks his promise is sound it can turn this man's promise to repay into spendable money. If they lent out something tangible, like dollar bills, they

FREEDOM FROM LAUNDRY WORK Not long ago, the U.S. Bureau of Home Economics found out through a survey that doing the family wash consumes eight hours a week in the average home.

Women voted it the most taxing of all housemaking tasks.

But washing and ironing need not be so oppressive. The fact is, many women hold onto 'outdated ideasand equipment that make laundry work harder than it need be. Nowadays there is little real reason to be a slave to the tub and the board. Help is available; scientific methods worked out by experts, modern equipment, new chemicals and fresh approaches can eliminate much*drudgery.

From the start you can save much washing and ironing by your choice of garments and fabrics. Smooth-finished materials like combed, mercerized cottons land flat weave rayons actually stay cleaner longer and are easier to wash than crepes or fuzzy materials.

There are many types of clothes that need little or no ironing â&#x20AC;&#x201D; "T" shirts for children and adults, knit blouses for women, tricot-knit slips and other lingerie. Simple styling likewise saves workmen's shirts with fused collars that need no starching, gored instead of pleated skirts for children and women, simple dresses for girls instead of those featuring ruffles and bows.

Many of the newer materials also can simplify laundering. Garments like shirts, slacks and dresses containing Orlon or Decron are easier to iron. Dynel blankets can go into the washing machine without shrinking or felting.

One of the best techniques for making laundry work less arduous is the use of modern water-repellent finishes like Drax, Gard and Shield. Materials sprayed with these chemicals repel dirt and stains. Spilled milk, for example, rolls off a child's clothes. Mud won't begrime suits easily.

How much of your flatwork ironing is really necessary? An increasing number of women have stopped ironing bath towels because they realize it breaks fibers and that an ironed towel is less ab, sorbent.

Some homemakers have ceased ironing sheets; they find that smoothing out damp sheets, and hanging them double over clothes line with hems meeting, leaves bed linen almost wrinkle-free.

NOT ALL PARENTS' FAULT (By Harry Boyd) One of the f acts brought out in the recent discussions of juvenile delinquency is that many parents tend to lose touch with their teen-age chil dren.

A piece in Better Homes and Gardens suggests that this is probably because the parents didn't let their youngsters talk with them enough during the early formative years. They were "too busy" to be bothered with the children's earnest questions and thereby shunted natural curiosity into tainvithoilesome channels.

Sounds plausible.

"No matter how trivial the problems sound to parents," the magazine points out, "the answer is the important thing to the child. When the parent tells a child not to bother him because he is -u-y, he is selfishly denying the right of a child to have a normal, healthy curiosity . . . Your children will mature more rapidly if they are allowed to have reglar visiting periods with you. Often the hour just before a meal is an excellent time for children to visit with you about their daily problems . . .

"Parents have the opportunity during these talks to discuss such things as ethics, courage, responsibility, and other abstract subjects, with the child participating actively in the discussion. Usually the child remembers these discussions because of the reasonable, personto-person character of the conversation."

I have an idea that is exactly right, theoretically. That the theory is not more widely practiced, however, may not be altogether the fault of the parents.

In actual operation this theory runs afoul of some rather formidable obstacles.

In the first place, a child involved in school, music lessons, Boy Scouts, extracurricular pageants, athletic contests and the normal run of neighborhood messing-around is apt to have a schedule into which is hard for a father to shoe-horn regular -Visiting periods and remain in good standing down at the mines.

The hour before mealtime is particularly bad, for this is when the radio and television people make their big effort to keep in touch with youth and they have more resources to tap than the average parent has.

This also is the time when the average father is least interested in ethics and other abstract subjects and most engrossed in specific matters, like tired feet and who did away with the sports section of the paper.

Shampoo is today a household word, but it was riot always so. The story of shampoo begins a long time ago in Italy where women used to wash their hair in softened soap. Ingenious Americans, who watched Italian women shampoo their hair, got the idea of bottling softened soap diluted in water as a shampoo for hair.

Manufacturers began to liquefy pure castile soap to put on the market. The manufacturer of Conti Shampoo, for example, used olive oil as a base. Other manufacturers used Lanolin (the oil from sheep's wool) and mineral oil.

The manufacturing process begins with the mixing of ingredients in huge vats, followed by a standing period in which the liquid ages to prevent clouding. Some shampoos cloud in cold temperatures but clear up when exposed to heat or warm water.

At present there are three types of shampoo. The soap shampoo now has to compete with detergent shampoos and those which are a mixture of both.

So-called detergents • were discovered in Germany where fats were so scarce that a substitute for soap had to be fourid. The results were better than the chemists dared hope. A new type of washing agent for textiles was made in the form of powder or granules.

This new product was called a synthetic detergent for want of a better neme. Actually Soap is itself a detergent.

The word means cleansing agent.

Proctor and Gamble began their line of detergent products back in 1933. The new products had many washing qualities soap did not, have, and idea scouts suggested it would be a fine product for washing hair.

After chemists arrived at a formula for shampoo and set it down on paper, research continued. Soon special synthetic detergents in liquid or cream form designed for shampooing the hair ap peered on the market.

First of the Proctor and Gamble drug products was Drene, a liquid shampoo, which was marketed in 1934. Its success was almost immediate and continuing research developed more products of this type. Today Proctor and Gamble 'manufactures many drug products, among them these hair preparations: Drene, Prell, Shasta, and Lilt Home Permanent.

Vegel do pokoje a stoupal po gpiekach, ciavaje dobry pozor, aby do 2adneho ptedrnetu nevrazil. V pozadi svetnice bylo slyget pravidelnY a hlubokY dech spiciho.

On December 31, 1953, the PEARL Brewing Company sealed its 770,121st barrel of Premium Quality PEARL Beer, the largest annual output of any beer ever produced by any brewery at any time in the State of Texas.

For those who revel in the ro mance of figures. this is the complete and correct story. Computed in bottles and cans, this means 253,215,784 bottles and cans, of Premium Quality PEARL Beer; well over a quarter of a billion.

More than a quarter of a billion of anything staggers the imagination, yet that is the number of bottles and cans of Premium Quality PEARL Beer produced in 1953 right here in Texas by the PEARL Brewing Company of San Antonio.

Due to the increasing demand for PEARL Beer throughout Texas was not passible to meet

consumer demand and the PEARL Brewing Company was forced to ration its distributors from April through August, 1953.

Otherwise, the sales would have been even greater.

During 1953 the PEARL Brewing Company was engaged in a large expansion program which was completed early, in the fall so that now the PEARL Brewery is not only the largest in Texas, but the largest in the entire Southwest, with an annual capacity of 1,".50,000 barrels.

Aside from the fact that the PEARL Brewing Company makes a product that thousands of people enjoy and demand, the firm has become an important economic factor not only in San Antonio but the state.
