We observe another great anniversary in our calendar by celebrating the birth of a Leader of men. The great Teacher brought to a waiting civilization a message of hope, breathing the spirit of BROTHERHOOD of man and declaring to all HUMANITY the doctrine of BENEVOLENCE without distinction as to race, politics or creed.

Two thousand years have passed, but our SPJST is proud that it is helping to keep the message alive today. In the time of international unrest, when sacrifices of human lives in the cause of peace seem futile, our country stands more than ever in need of fraternal organizations such as our SPJST. Such simple things as good will of our neighbors and the peace and security of our homes are the greatest Yuletide gifts.

Essay Contest

A subcommittee meeting of the III. District of the S. P. J. S. T. was held on Sunday, August 16, 1953, in the hall of Pokrok Dallas Lodge No. 84, at which meeting the following rules for the "Essay Contest" were formulated and adopted:

(By Ervin Hickman) When you see Santa Claus riding behind his reindeer this Christmas in your city, their ankles popping in unison with s:eigh bells, you may credit a Texas man with the idea.

The idea of live reindeer as part of the Yuletide season began seven years ago, Here's the story: Grady Carothers, Goldthwaite ranchman, has two boys, Jack and John. Each Christmas season they wondered why Santa Claus always appeared without his reindeer. "Why can't Old Nick have 'em down here?" the Texas rancher asked himself.

As the idea grew in his mind, he began writing letters of inquiry to Alaska.

He found the reindeer by this method, but getting them out of the Territory was something else. All reindeer in Alaska are under government supervision. Back in the early '90's, our government imported some 1,200 of the animals from the Laplanders and Siberia to help the Eskimos out of their food and clothing distress.

In 1948, Carothers took John, then 14, with him to Alaska and camped three weeks on the Bering Sea, getting four reindeer. These were brought into West Texas in late summer and were a total loss. They were not acclimated, lost their antlers, then died.

In the late fall of 1949, he camped near Eschscholtz Bay, 90 miles south of Eschscholtz, and Eskimo village on the Artie Ocean, with a population of 200 people.

With the help of the natives who ihelped him rope and round up isix more reindeer, Carothers came home on Thanksgiving Day and put them in a parade in Goldthwaite the day after.

"The Eskimos expected me to sing cowboy songs," the bronzed Texan declared. "I can't do that but they like the way I rope and I, in turn, marvel at the way they "walk" down the animal.

"I pay them $150-$175 dollars per animal in the presence of a govenrment official. They like that, too. Their only other income from the reindeer is the allowable slaughter of 10 per cent of the herd's increase. The reindeer meat brings them 35 cents a pound in their village, and a reindeer will only dress out about 100 pounds," he said.

The reindeer man is now coming back from Alaska with 23 this year. He bought out 13 last year and now has a herd of 18 on his 480-acre ranch where they

act like any other domesticated animal in their brush-covered corral. They do have a special lot and electrically-driven fans for the hottest days of summer.

They also are the only reindeer herd in the United States The reindeer subsists on a moss called lichen in his native habitat, but for the first year in Texas he is given a diet of about two pounds of oatmeal per day.

After that they are fed peanut and alfalfa hay with some. of the breakfast cereal.

They breathe with their mouth open like a dog, when hot, and are famous for their belching that only happens when they lie down.

Both male and female have antlers that range as high as 40 points with a spread ranging from two to four feet.

These they shed each spring and grow back by the fall of the year.

Mr. Carothers' hobby has turned into big business. This year his reindeer with Santa Claus will be seen in 400 cities in 14 states. First appearance was in Corpus Christi, the day after Thanksgiving.

The price range is from .$200 to $1,000 for each merchant who sponsors the parade. Carothers figures each animal costs him $1,000 by the time they reach his corrals. He flies 6,000 miles by commercial airline to get them and comes home with his animals via air cargo freight lines Despite all the warnings and tribulations he encountered, Grady Carothers has succeeded in making come true his dream of bringing boys and girls a real Christmas through Santa Claus complete with reindeer. ) 4,, 4, ( CHRISTMAS

1, The Essay Contest is open for members and nonmember children.

2. The contestants must be between 10 years and 18 years of age.

3. The contestants must be living in one of the eight counties comprising District Three SPJST, namely, Ceke, Dallas, Ellis, Grayson, Hill, McLennan, Kaufman, Tarrant.

4. The essay is limited to not more than 300 words.

5. The essay must be written or typed on one side of paper. The signature, age, and address must be on a separate sheet of paper. It must be sent to L. 0. Hosek, Secretary, Grapevirte Rt. 1, Texas.

6. The envelope with the essay must be postmarked not later than December 31, 1953.

7. Three prize awards are: First, One 20 year policy with one year premium paid, plus $25 in cash; Second, $20 in cash; Third, $15 in cash.

8. Three disinterested judges will select the winners in the Essay Contest.

9. All the essays will gradually be published in the Vestnik.

10. The essay must answer One question "Why I like S. P. J. S. T.?"

All essays become the property of District Three.

Our Youth Movemen %rdie caeilsher The time of year has come, when we should evaluate in our Lodges and Fraternal orders the success of our efforts and work of the past year, and adapt policies and procedures which will engender stronger bonds of friendship a mong our membership, facilitate our social activities and actuate the participation of our children and our youth in cur lodge life.

As a Youth Counselor, t h e Youth movement is naturally a topic and work which I am espousing and for reasons that are not too obscure; for in our youth lies the future of SPJST and in the youth's hands will someday be placed the responsibility for this, one of the, if not the fines!t fraternal organization Of our time.

As this year is passing on, looking in retrospect, did we give our children the opportunity to become conversant with some of the multitudes of, details formulating the life and existence of our fraternal orders? Did we, and are we, through the Youth Movement, giving the Ohildren somethin,g to do, capturing thereby their interest and creating in them the desire to be active in our lodge work? Are we giving the children the wonderful feeling of belonging? Or are we permitting the children to stay away from the activities just because we don't need them and thereby permit the children to feel that they are not wanted, and believe me, that is exactly how some of these children feel.

If we permit this loss of our childrens interest, if we deny them the privilege and pride in our ways of life, in our culture, in our history and glorious past, then indeed our intelligence certainly must be blighted.

To a child a kind word, a compliment and a pat on the back for any effort the children put out in behalf of our lodge, goes a long way and is so easy to do.

There should be in our lodges, a mutual feeling of understanding and harmony which makes working together easier and more pleasant for everyone and in such an atmosphere the lodge work will certainly be done as it should be, and faster.

Let's leave out of our meetings the

otiose and the equivocals, always devoid of profundity a n d significance. Let's leave out the prejudiced criticisms, they will not get anybody anywhere, for they are only cloying diatribes, immature declamations of selfimportance. Let's weed out from our lodge work those selfappointed insignificant infantile dictators, truly nonentities but whose ego has been hurt and who being uncapable of constructive and always welcome criticism and advice stoop down to that certain incomprehensible breed known as gossipmongers.

It is difficult to be privy to their mental processes, for periphery of their reasoning corresponds to a pinhead and the contagion of their policy and behaviour must always be followed only by disorder and lack of interest in our lodges.

I would like to privilege myself at this time a request: Let's not permit stagnation to stifle our SPJST Life for we cannot and must not acquiesce inactivity and for the sake of our future and our childrens future we must habituate constantly and with enthusiasm all efforts on behalf of our youth. Please let's all join hands in a united effort, your lodge needs every one of you and it is only up to you what you will make out of your lodge.

My programs for the year 1954 are or, ,;heir way. They contain many orginal tiew ideas, musical games, poems etc Keep them on file in your lodges and turn them over to the proper authorities when you are no longer a youth director as these programs are SPJST property, nontransferable and cannot be used by anybody else without written permission.

I also hope to see in our Vestnik a lot of pictures of Christmas programs and also pictures of other youth activities and hobbies etc. in our lodges. These pictures I will include in a special SPJST picture album, which will be exhibited at our next convention. So send a lot of pictures and make your lodge come out and shine and sequentially give everybody a chance to see what you are doing. 'I think all of you will enjoy seeing this book.

Each month at your monthly meetings may I suggest a presentation of a short selected program — whether its only a poem, song, or short playette to help stimulate attendance of these meetings of our lodges. In each month you will find something to have a program about and if nothing more (to begin with) use a short poem about the New Year, Valentine, Masaryk, Texas Independence, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Flag Day, Circus and Vacation Time, Good Ole School Days, Hallowe'en, Thanksgiving and Christmas. My programs will giVe you ample ideas you can very easily carry out with very little effort and you will certainly be well repaid in the happiness you will vread.

The feeling that you will havet,Ivithin of having done your part as a member shall be a reward in itself. A little entertainment between speeches and official procedure will always enliven things and make your ,meetings more interesting. You will be giving the children a goal to shoot at and something that will culminate their efforts as there is nothing more gratifying and rewarding to the youngster as Mien he re• ceives an applause from his elders, for his efforts well done.

You as Youth Director will render a worthy contribution towards the successful proceedings at your Lodge and gain for yourself the interest of the membership and help in your work.

Plan these programs. The officers of your lodge will welcome this enlivening of the meetings and the children will feel honored being presented at these appearances.

May I also report that the Concessions managed by our Youth at District Five proved very successful and profitable, giving the youngsters a chance to display their enterprises and show their ingenuity. It was heartwarming to watch their interest and enthusiasm. Each lodge handled their own concession and each one tried to out-do the other — in fun of course, as well as profit -- and all having a grand time doing it. Many children met and really got acquainted as they have never done before, and best of all may I add — it was the most profitable District Meeting we have ever had, as the children have cleared the District over $200. which will give us something to operate with. This gave the the children a feeling of independence, of belonging, and assurance of contributing something of their own to the District. A MOST WONDERFUL EX.PERIENCE! (By Iness Slate) The roar of the fire thundering from the logs sounded like so many bullet l' shots as Ed Wheelahan worked fromtically to check the blaze. Even as he ! worked, his wife, Ella, straining at his I side, he knew the hopelessness of it all.

The blaze was too big. It had too much ' of a head start. The barn would go — the barn, and this season's entire harvest. It was hopeless, yet, still he hoped.

Help would not come, that he knew, surely and past doubt, but he hoped and almost, he prayed. If only six weeks ago he had—but it was too late for regrets now. This fire meant ruin, and it was all his own fault.

"This way. Ella," he shouted, "We'll try to get a ditch dug just this side here.

Maybe we can hold it back from the house . . .

Shouting to his wife, sweating as he flung himself on the shovel, his mind still went back to that night, just a few weeks past, the night Sy Jackson had burned out.

He'd seen the flames that night too. leaping in brilliant crimson against the black winter sky, but he'd had a cold and was tired from the harvesting.

When the other riders had thundered by, racing to the rescue, he hadn't even bothered to saddle a horse. After all, he'd said to Ella, it wasn't as if they really needed him. One man wasn't going to make much difference, one way or the other. And he was tired.

So he hadn't gone, hadn't even inquired,but the next day Bob Welcox had ridden up to the door. Bob looked angry.

He didn't even bother to dismount. He sat his horse, straight and stiff and looked down at Ed. "Sy Jackson burned out last night," he'd announced, "Didn't see you there."

"Couldn't make it," Ed answered. "I was pretty sick last night, too sick to go out."

"Not too sick this morning, though, I notice. Well . . ." Bob drawled the words, "we're all pitching in, helping Sy to get a fresh start. Mose Ackers, he's giving two cows. Sam Spauls, he's giving some groceries from his store.

Me and the wife, we're fixing to supply the lumber for helping him rebuild."

He paused somewhat grimly. "Didn't hear what you're giving, Ed." "Don't seem necessary to give anything," Ed had answered, "Seems like he's 'been given most everything."

"Sure," Bob's word's were slow as a funeral, "Nobody has to help, less'n they want to. Suit yourself, but," his eyes bored into Ed's, "when your turn comes,, brother, don't you be a-yowling for help."1

To see what possibilities lie on words having the same meaning as "Agent" I took time to go into a little research of words.

Boiling down these words I find `producer-and operative likely prospects , dice our field workers are the producers and artisans. Of course they are also tid y' ,eis and counselors. Deciding between these two words I like operative the best. Websters dictionary defines this word as "an artisan or a skilled workman to sell insurance. Besides, the word "operative" is not overused, and sounds better than "agent." Therefore, my suggestion would be "Operative" — SPJST Operatives? Organize means to put together, while our field works produce with skill.

Sisters and brothers of the 7th district: your treasurer reports, and especially for the information of the program and essay contest committees, that at this the district fund amounts to $97.19. The expense of the district and small awards to children who were on the program in Hobson were duly taken care of, totalling $18.50. There are no outstanding debts to be paid, thanks to the generosity of workers who did not submit expense.

Having to hold an essay contest our fund, seems to me, to be too small to take care of the expense for the whole of 1954, for there will be prizes to be given. A very commendable example for some of us to follow was the personal

contribution of $5.00 to next year's fund by brother Louis Elsik from Lodge No. 118, Kingsville, and $5.00 from the Lodge itself, banded to me right after the close of our meeting in Hobson. Later„ I received a check, from lodge Vesmir No. 61. Poth, and a letter explaining that this lodge is sending $4.10 covering 10c on all adult members for 1954 as agreed on at the district meet. A notable example. The $15.00 check presented at the meeting by Lodge San Antonio No. 133, is a contribution for 1954 fund.

Whose next, sisters and brothers ? We must have more funds to carry on.

I had a dream the other night in which I saw brother treasurer, Koliha, his pockets bulging, brother Chupick nodding his head and President Marek smiling as if to say "Silly Boy", writing out a check to the district as a surprise Christmas check. I don't recall what it was I was eating that evening that I should be dreaming of money. Could anything like that happen? Well, yes, it could! ! Let's pray —.

I liked brother Valeik's mention of pennies. Ordinarily most of us have pennies cluttering our pockets or hand bags.

They are bothersome "as all get out" when we are looking for other change, etc. It really would bother your district treasurer the least bit should you come to the next district meet in May at San Antonio and unload the pesky things in his lap.

If need be he'll bring along a toe sack, just in case. Of course, if some one wants to make change for pennies, I hope there will be enough pennies available. There will be no arguments should you insist on offering other "filthy lucre." Green Washingtons, Lincolris, Hamiltons or Jacksons shall be joyfully received.

All the lodges in the district should press upon their youth the idea of being on the district meet program. This is not :a one lodge doings, every lodge has the same opportunity. Then let's thank them and thank them twice, as brother Frank Machart wrote in the Vestnik recently, for appearing on the program.

But the second time reward them :too, for their efforts.

SANTA CLAUS IN OTHER LANDS There are but a few spots on the globe where — when Christmas rolls around — there is not someone to celebrate, and to remember the ancient message: On earth, peace and good will toward men."

But the year 1953 finds the world divided by curtains — iron, plush, bamboo — and good will toward men has some difficulty in getting through them.

Yet it does penetrate. This month, the Midnight Mass will take place in Russia.

Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia; and while the priests who celebrate it have sworn allegiance to the new regime, the crowds which throng the Church swear allegiance to an old one.

The seasonal festivities do not take place in all Christian countries on December 25th. In some the Christmas season begins on December 4th; and ends on January 6th, and various Saints whose birthdays fall between thes dates have gained special importance. In Holland, Belgium, and Germany, it is St. Nicholas whose birthday falls on December 6th; in Sweden, St. Lucia on December 13th; in Syria, St. Barbara on December 4th.

The legends of these saints are intermingled with motifs of the Nativity, and thus have influenced the popular observance of Christmas. For example, St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myre, in Lycia, once resuscitated three children who had been "murdered" by a butcher, and thus became patron saint of children (as well as of bankers, pawnbrokers, maidens', mariners, scholars, and thieves, in fact of almost everybody except butchers), and thus became the very symbol of Christmas celebrations. He is the American Santa Claus, the French Pere Noel, the English Father Christmas.

In many countries which have never heard of Santa Claus, a white-bearded old man brings presents to the children on Christmas. In Denmark and Norway, the gift-bearer is an elf called Jule-nissen, riding a goat; in Finland, Wainamoinen, hero of the national epic, The Kalevala; in Sweden, a dwarf, Tomte.

In parts of Germany it is not St. Nicholas who brings gifts because Martin Luther, fearful that the popular Saint was overshadowing the importance of the Nativity, replaced Santa by the Child Jesus.

The American Santa, snubnosed and twinkle-eyed, driving a sled drawn by reindeers, is, we must face it, a Russian, This figure has long existed in Russian lore under the name of Grandfather Frost, a peasant, from whom Santa in-

herited his boots and leather belt. His pointed cap was borrowed from JuleNissen, as was the red of his costume.

That Grandfather Frost became identified with St. Nicholas is not surprising, for this Saint is the patron of Russia, Lapland, and the Samoyeds; and it is undoubtedly in these countries that Santa picked up his sled and reindeer.

Christmas in Holland is a purely religious holiday. Popular celebrations fall on St. Nicholas' Day, December 6th, when "The Bishop" arrives from Spain — he is perhaps the last of the Spanish conquerers — and distributes gifts to the children. Arriving from the South, he has no sled. He rides a white horse over the rooftops. Children leave their shoes near the chimney with carrots, water, and hay for the horse.

The Bishop is accompanied by a little blackamoor called Black Pete who carries the presents. He also carries bundles of switches for bad children.

In Western Germany, St. Nicholas' Day is also celebrated. Great fairs are acid on this day, and figurines of St. Nicholas and the angels are sold as well as images of a demoniac character called Knecht Ruprecht, or Pelznickle, the furred Nicholas. Pennsylvania Dutch children are still terrified of the mention of Pelznickle.

Jule-Nisen, the Santa Claus of the Scandinavian countries, pays his visits on Christmas Eve. In Denmark, while good children get presents, bad ones are hit by the Yul-Bok, a long pore covered with goatskin and with an animal head at its end. Scandinavia follows the delightful custom- of saving a handfuli of grain from the harvest, which is placed upon a long pole for the benefit of the birds. This is called the bird's Christmas tree.

The Czechoslovakian Santa Claus, SvatS/ Mikula g, does not come with reindeer or horse, but descends from heaven on December 6th by means of a golden cord. A white-clad angel conducts his tour of 'the country and he is followed by the devil, Cert, in a black hood. On his arrival, the children say their prayers. Those who know their prayer get a present; those who don't get whipped by Cert.

In Soviet Russia, people are free to attend the Mass, and do so gladly, but the secular aspects of Christmas are encouraged by the state. Presents are brought to the children on Epiphany, January 6th, by an old woman called Babushka. Legend says that long ago the three Magi asked her to accompany them to Bethlehem, but she refused be-

cause she had housework to do. Unable to find the Infant Jesus by herself, she as been obliged to wander about through the centuries, bringing gifts to children, in the hope that someday she will bear presents to the child she seeks.

In the Latin American countries, Christmas falls during the hot season, and is celebrated by picnics and other outdoor frolics. Santa Claus with his sled would be somewhat off the beam, and so in Brazil a movement arose to dethrone ,him and ,subktitute is more :tropical Grandpapa Indian — Vovo Indo. But the Brazilian children stood staunchly by the gentleman from the North Pole.

In Mexico, presents are not placed,,, round the tree, but in an earthenware jar which is then broken by a blindfolded child with a stick. A shower of good things follows, and a wild scramble takes place as the other children grab for their share.

Midnight Mass is religiously 'observed all over Latin America.

All over the world, Christmas is the season o!! gifts. Perhaps the custom stems from the tradition of the three Magi, bearing gifts to the Child; or perhaps from the Roman habit of gift-giving during Saturnalia. Not everywhere is this custom observed on Christmas Eve. In many Central European countries, presents must wait until the New Year.

The Christmas carol from carrolla, meaning wreath or crown -- springs from a popular song or dance of 12th Century Spain. In its original form, it was danced by couples walking in circles and singing licentious rhymes. To combat this profane demonstration, so utterly opposed to the spirit of Christmas, the friars would go into the marketplace warbling the already popular melodies, substituting the vernacular text with rhymed stories of the Saints, or Christmas legends.

In many parts of Europe today, children love to dress up as characters in the Nativity drama, and wander from house to house on Christmas Eve, singing carols, and collecting small presents for their trouble. In Bavaria, Hungary, and Holland, they carry little cribs with figurines representing the scene in the manger. In the Bavarian Alps, the manufacture of such Krippen has reached a high degree of art.

All countries have their pet dishes or Christmas dinner. In the United States it is the turkey with cranberry sauce; in Germany, the goose; in England, the suckling pig, a reminder of the boar offered to Frey during the Yule, however,

THE ORIGIN OF "SILENT NIGHT" "Silent Night" is often called the "Song from Heaven" because the story of its inspiration and composition is one of the most beautiful Christmas stories in existence.

On December 24, 1818, in the Austrian village of Hallein, as Father Joseph Mohr sat reading his Bible, there was a knock at his door. It was a peasant woman who wanted the priest to visit a poor charcoalmaker's wife to whom a child had been born. The parents had sent her to ask the priest to come and bless the infant.

Father Mohr was strangely moved by the visit to the mother. And that evening as-,he returned to his home saw that the dark slopes of, the Alps around the village were alight with torches of the mountaineers on their way to church.

To him it was a Christmas miracle.

Later, as he tried to put down on paper his feeling and experience, the words kept turning into verse. When dawn came he found he had written a poem—a beautiful and moving poem.

On Christmas Day his friend, Franz Xaver Gruber, music teacher in the village school, composed music to fit the verses.

Village children heard the priest and teacher singing the song and learned it.

From there is spread throughout the world. Today, it is regarded as the greatest Christmas hymn and wherever there are men of good will they sing: "Silent Night, holy night— All is calm, all is bright, Round you Virgin, Mother and Child; Holy Infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace— Sleep in heavenly peace."

THE WREATH OF HOLLY It's time for that song about "boughs of holly."

With impudent red berries clamoring for attention, Christmas holly calls up, a swarm of inherited images and feelings.

CenturieS ago, Teutonic bear-hunters in winter forest venerated the barbed and glossy green plant. It was a sign that Nature's pulse still beat beneath the frozen earth. The tribesmen trimmed their huts with holly branches to welcome the return of the life-renewing sun after a winter's absence. Pagan priests of the British Isle also hung holly to attract the "spirits of the woods" and keep them nearby until spring.

The Romans, too, decked their temples with sprays and wreaths from the holly, tree during December festivals in honor of Saturn, god of seed-sowing.

Not to appear conspicuous among the

Romans, the early Christians adopted holly for their own secret celebrations.

It was said that Christ's crown of thorns had been formed of holly branches, causing the tree to be called "Christorn" in German. In English, the "holly tree" came to be called simply "holly."

When most of our ancestors still lived in rural villages, annual custom sent groups of young people gaily into the woods to cut basketfuls of holly. Today most of us would have to do without the Christmas holly wreath if it weren't for the holly farmers of Oregon and Washington.

At least 90 per cent of our true English holly comes from these Northwestern states. In November and early December, cuttings are collected by shippers, sorted and packed in ten-pound cartons.

Mostly by refrigerated railway express, more than 50,000 of these cartons speed to about 2,000 wholesalers and thence to thousands of nurserymen and florists all over the country.

But when the ribboned, sharp-tipped holly wreath scratches gently against the window-pane in December, it is the same holly old-time villagers gathered— the same green holly in an unbroken line of Christmases. ) 9 •( FOREIGN LANGUAGES IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS Brother Otto Stehlik, who is an alert —or shall I say, voracious—reader of everything fit to read, found an article in the Dal:as Morning News, Monday,!

The article mentions the Czech language in Texas schools. It says that the mastery of a modern language is an intellectual attainment with profound significance. But read the whole article which follows: Among the subjects considered by the Texas State Teachers Association in Dallas was the formation of the Texas Foreign Language Association. The purpose, of course, is to encourage the study of Spanish, French, German, Czech and Latin in the public schools.

In some portions of Texas, Czech will have strong support, owing to concentration of population of Czech origin.

For the system as a whole, however, Czech does not reasonably concern the public schocls of Texas. Spanish properly ranks first in Texas, with Latin receiving renewed importance for students readed toward university studies. French' and German now offer new usefulness due to the growing ties of swift and con-

The mastery of a modern language is an intellectual attainment which has more profound significance than is usually realized. Once a man has two sets of sounds identified with his whole catalogue of ideas and relationships, he is forever emancipated from the error of taking the sound (or word in his own language) in place of the idea for which it stands.

Anything short of the ability to think and write in a foreign tongue is short of the legitimate object of language instruction. It is hoped that the new association will aim at mastery of speech, rather than mere sampling of literature by laborious translation.

The editor of the Vestnik hasp short postscript to this timely article from the Dallas Morning News. The Armed Forces of the U. S. are constantly searching for those who know foreign languages, especially the Slavic languages. The Czech language is one of the dozen of Slavic languages, very closely related. If a person masters one Slavic language, say the Czech, he can very shortly acquire a working knowledge of the Russian language. This self-complacency and this false superiority of one language had been blasted to smithereens during the World War Two. That is the reason Dr. John M. Skrivanek, according to the recent article in The Battalion, official newspaper of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, has been invited by the Armed Forces Institute to serve on a panel for the selection of beginning Russian textbooks. Dr. Skrivanek, as you may know, is professor of modern languages and teaches Russian and Czech at the A and M College. ) • DID YOU KNOW— One of the best loved hymns, "Rock of Ages," was written for the first time on a playing card. In 1775, the composer, Englishman Augustus Toplady, had to find shelter from a storm in the cleft of a large rock at Barrington Coombe.
