Slavonic Benevolent Order of the Fayette County Coutthouse La Grange, Texas On July 1, 1897, several hundred of pioneers of Czechoslovak descent met at this historical courthouse to organize the fraternal order known " as the S. P. J. S. T.

What is the S. P. 3. S. T.? Why was it organized? Who were its organizers? What does it stand for? What has it accomplished?

These and similar questions are propounded almoSt daily by people unacquainted with the background, with the records, and with the aims and purposes of the S. P. J. S. T. Summed up briefly, this is my answer to these and similar questions. The S. P. J. S. T. is a patriotic, American, fraternal Order operating on legal reserve rates and offering its ni embers safe, sound, and economical life insurance. Its mottoes, PROTECTION HUMANITY — BROTHERHOOD are its creed; FRATERNALISM and AMERICANISM are its aim and goal.

The members of the S. P. 3. S. T. regard it as their heritage from its pioneer founders; they are proud of it; they believe in it. If you get acquainted with the S. P. J. S. T., your too, will like it, and become a member of it.

ManZele Vincikovi pomahali ten rad zakladat a darovali radu kus pozemku pro postaveni ladove sine. The year of 1882 was encouraging.

They made a decent crop of corn and thirteen bales of cotton. But the cottonmarket was low, the highest price brought $50 for only one bale. The other bales were sold much cheaper, as low as $35 per bale. But it was enough to pay the outstanding obligations, and enough to hope that the following year would be more favorable.

My parents were young, determined,1 working .hard. They had no one to help them. It was up to them to cultivate and to harvest the crop. They did not, could not, enjoy rest. They both became ill,' probably malaria, because the illness was marked by a chill followed by high fever and sweating, but they had no thermometer to diagnose the fever. And as sick as they were, they dragged themselves in the summer heat trying to pick cotton. That was in the year of 1882, the first year of their farming in Texas.

Everything was so strange, so unusual, so unexpected. Those were the trying days for my parents. My mother related to us, children, one such incident.

One evening, shortly before midnight, they were startled by hoofbeats of many riders, probably wild cowboys. They stopped in front of the modest cottage, shouted, fired two dozen or more shots, and left as noisily as they came. My parents were not used to such serenades, could not understand that type of gallantry. They were frightened. They prayed.

Next year, in 1883, they lived in an old, small, much-neglected cottage on a farm near Tom Every, about two miles north of Rice Crossing. The house was right by the road south of the land owned by Tom Mikus. There they lived two years. The same year another immigrants from Moravia, Czechoslovakia, came to Rice Crossing; the Cuba family.

They knew my grandparents, the Stepans, and my parents, the Svadlenak couple, and they made their way across the Atlantic on the strength- of their former friendship. There was no other place to go. Consequently, three families lived in that small, dipalidated house for almost a year. When my mother was dying, Mrs. Cuba—we called her then Grandma Cuba—lived next door in Taylor. She used to come every day. That day, she came, but my mother did not recognize Mrs. Cuba any more. She stood by my mother's deathbed, tears freely running down her cheeks, then she crossed my mother's arms, knelt by the bedside, and silently prayed for several minutes. Thereafter Mrs.. Cuba told me: "We came to Amer-

Vt STNIK WEST, TEXAS Ica because Svadlenaks were here. They were our friends, and we knew that we wouldn't be left without a roof. Your parents didn't have much of a house, but they offered us to share what they had. We had to squeeze to get in, but we were grateful, satisfied, understanding. Your mother and I were as two sisters. She will ever stay in my heart."

She said much more, but I don't want to appear sentimental. Those who knew Mrs. Cuba, or rather Grandma Cuba, will understand.

I don't know what kind of luck they had the year when the Cuba family lived with them. But I was- told of the trouble they had to haul the cotton to the gin. My father had to buy another small horse, almost a pony, on credit. He did not have any money, not even as much as a small down-payment. But he paid for the horse after he sold some cotton.

btrana was recurring. One night, my father got so ill that he thought he would not live to see the daylight. It was a dreadful night. Mother knew she would have to. go for some help. She left father and the children—they had two toddlers then—put a halter on a horse to lead him to a neighbor. He was an American: In her own way she made him understand that she would like to borrow a saddle. In moments of urgency, a foreign language is no barrier. Mysteriously, he understood what she needed, and saddled the horse for her.

In the dark of the night, she went to see the doctor. He was living in - the Tom Every community. There she again tried to explain to Dr. Inc why- she came. Since my father had been suffering with malaria for several years; 'the physician prepared a remedy. It is hard to say, if it - was the medicine or my'father's faith that finally made him well.

Joseph and Johanna Svadlenak My parents would not yield to fat-j igue. Even when tired, they kept working, kept cotton picking. Naturally they became ill ' again. Malaria came back.'

Dr. Inc prescribed for them a remedy in powdered form. They used six doses, and went back in the cotton field: Two Or three days later, malaria recurred.

There seemed to be no way to get rid of it.

The next year was a constant fight with malaria. They moved to another place near Boggy Branch, north of the farm of Tom Mikus. There they stayed three years. But the malaria sickness

Often my mother told me: "If I were to tell you my experiences, it would be a big beak of thousand pages." It was a long struggle, a chain of many misfortunes. He was not satisfied. He hoped to own in those days. his own farm. When I review the life of my father, it appears to me that he everlastingly had some obstacles in his path. But I must say that he never complained, never used a bad word either referring to the Providence or to his fellowmen.

He saw the world as the work of Divine Wisdom, governed by divine law, in which it is man's duty to conform freely to whatever destiny may be his. He was grateful that he could settle all of his obligations, financial, moral, s and spiritual. He did not complain when his health began to decline. that was ,14)ady to face the Power that regulate our coming8 and goings. He understood that he had to pay his moral and ethical debts—he called it "karma"—through the eternal cycle of birth and death. He passed away on December 30, 1921.

Immediately after the transition of my father, my mother sold the house, bought another lot on Cecilia Street, in Taylor, and began to build another home. From that new home went into the world the youngest children of the Svadlenak family, some of them to colleges and universities. My youngest sister, Bettie Jo, died suddenly on August 17, 1924. Bettie Jo was teaching, at the time of her death, in Hutto, Texas. It was a dreadful shock for my mother.

She could not find any consolation in her new home. She rented it and bought a small home near Mrs. Anna Krenek, her friend, hoping to find comfort near her neighbor. But the only time when she felt to be her ownself was the occasion when several of her children came to visit with her—children and grandchildren. She outlived my youngest sister Bettie Jo ten years. f At the age of 74, she passed away on May 4, 1932,' and was buried on Mother's Day beside the remains of my father.

In the same family lot in Taylor rest the remains of the youngest son of the Svadlenak family, Edward. He was the victim of diphtheria which raged throughout the section around Taylor in fall and winter of 1907. He died at the tender age of three.

My youngest sister Bettie Jo was also laid there to her eternal rest. When she was in Austin, shortly before her graduation, she sent our mother a greeting card wishing mother to remain with us for many, many more years. Mother kept the greeting card ten years. Now I treasure it as a dear memento.

Brother Charles died suddenly on July 14, 1946, in Taft, Texas. He owned a grocery store in Taft. His wife Edith, also

Wednesday, Novdmber 11, 1953 of Taylor, had his remains brought to' rest in the family lot in Taylor. Edith then sold the establishment, and with her daughter came to live in Taylor.

Thus, two brothers and one sister sleep side•by-side and with their parents. Brother Rudolph wished to be buried in Austin. His wife Ella and two sons, R. Eldo and Lore Dean, still live in Austin.

The remains of our first sister, little Marie, born in Hostalkova, Czechoslovakia, who with our parents crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1881, are resting in Welcome near Nelsonville.

Thus, five children of the Svadlenak family had passed through transition on the journey back Home. Seven of the Svadlenak children still live. They are: Joe, with his wife Annie, lives in Dallas.

Johanna, with her husband Frank S. Lesikar, lives on a farm near Taylor.

John, with his wife Marie, lives on the old Svadlenak homestead, He bought out the shares of others. Marie, with her husband Hugo Sefcak, lives in Dallas.

Ruble, with her husband Ed Holly, lives in San Antonio. Anna, with her husband E. M. Krenek, Doctor of Dental Surgery, lives in Taylor. The youngest one of the children, Frank G., with his wife Bessie, lives in Thrall. Frank is State representative and vice president of the SPJST. My parents were members of the SPJST, and charter members of Praha Lodge No. 29. It gives me a feeling of thrill and pride to know that all of the Svadlenak children, all of the grandchtldren, and alSo all of the greatgrandchildren are members of the SPJST. My parents had a deep religious feel-, ing, although very liberal. In the library of my father one could find the best books of many famous writers. Those books are now my consolation.

(Editor's Note:—To this very interesting biography prepared by Sister Ruble Holly, your editor would like to add a postscript, a note about the books of the late Joseph Svadlenak. While visiting in the home of the youngest living son, Frank G. Svadlenak of Thrall, my wife observed that there was an old book lying on a table in the reading room, flanked by a small library. The old book attracted our attention. It was bound in leather and brass. Impulsively, I reached for it, opened it. "You may not be able to read it," remarked our host.

• I discovered it was an old family Bible, printed in the "Schwabacher," a style of German type which resembles the earliest Gothic types, and printed some two hundred years ago. The paper,

though it looks old, does not crease, does not break, but feels more like the finest grade of linen. Brother Svadlenak explained to me that the Bible was handed down to him as being the youngest son living. In order to keep this seventeenth century relic in the name of the Svadlenak family, my host has made arrangements—so he told me—to will this Bible to the youngest Svadlenak son, since he does not have any sons himself. When I pressed for more details, he explained that at present the youngest boy bearing the name of Svadlenak is Stephen Svadlenak, son of his nephew Stanfield and his wife. Little Steve is now five years old. If no other Svadlenak is born, he will inherit the old Svadlenak Bible.)

Essay Contest District 5 S.P.J.S.T. In the last meeting of District 5, held in Angleton, Texas, on August 30, 1953, it was decided to conduct an Essay Contest somewhat similar to that being sponsored by District 3.

The Essay Contest Committee, composed of Sis. Birdie Hilsher and Bros.

John Kahanek, Jr., and Vladimir Straznicky, formulated the following rules and regulations for the Essay Contest of District 5: (1) The Essay Contest is open for member and non -member children (whose father or mother is a member of the S.P:J.S.T.)--- between the ages of 10 and 18, who re ► iete within the confines of the Counties , -comprising District 5, such counties being Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris; Liberty and Waller.

(2) The Essay must not consist of more than 300 words.

(3) The Essay must be written or typed on one side of paper and mailed to John Kahanek, Jr., 5421 Long St., Houston 7, Texas. Do not place your name or other idetifying marks on your Essay.

Write your name, addreSs and age on a separate sheet of paper. This way the judges (to be selected by the Essay Contest Committee) will not know the identity of any party writing an Essay and will judge each Essay strictly upon its merits.

(4)` Your entry and identity information shall be included in the same envelope. In order that the envelope is not opened until after January 1, 1954, please write "Essay Contest"- in the lower left hand corner of the envelope.

(5) The Essay envelope must be post-' mucked not later than December 31, 1953.

(6) The contestants will be divided into, three separate groups so that a 10year-old will have as much opportunity to win the 1st prize as ate 18-year-old.

Originality will count.

(6) Three prizes will be awarded to the lucky ones. One 20-year policy with one year premium paid, plus $30.00, for the first prize; $20.00 for the second prize, and $10.00 for the third prize.

(7) The winning Essays will be published in the . Vestnik. Interesting. excerpts from the other Essays will also be publiShed.

(8) The Essay must confine itself to one or both of the following topics: (a) What I like about the S.P.J.S.T. (b) What I dislike about the S.P.J.S.T. and what I would, do to improve the matters- of dislike.
