He didn't tell me how many of those who ordered the courses are really trying to improve themselves and are sending in the questionnaires. The primary purpose of the training course is to put organizers into satisfactory production.

Sc it is vital to the success of the course that the' questionnaires be sent in as soon as the lesson is completed. It was gratifying to hear from Brother Marek that there are four organizers who have already completed the entire course: two in District One, one in District Six, and one in District Seven. * * LET ME MAKE one more remark about those training courses. You don't have to have college education to master this course. You don't even have to have high school education, but you have to have desire to improve your production.

The entire course can be studied and the questionnaires completed in 'ten days of intensive work. But the Supreme Lodge is not rushing you. You can take your time and complete it at your leisure while you are working. Give yourself a break. Order the course.

AMERICA'S FUTURE is irrevocably linked with America's youth. Recognizing that fact, the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1935, at its 36th National Encampment in New Orleans, granted the Ladies Auxiliary to the V. F. W. the privilege of forming youth groups to be known as the Daughters of Veterans of Fbreign Wars. Today, that group is known as the Junior Girls Unit of the Ladies Auxiliary to the V. F. W. (since membership rules were broadened to include war veteran's sisters and these Junior Girls Units are proving the worth of Citizenship building organizations for your with an amazing array of Community Service and hospital work.

Admittedly created as a training ground for active membership and service in the Ladies Auxiliary to the V. F. W., the emphasis, however, in the Junior Girls Units is placed upon patriotic citizenship service to the nation. That purpose is clearly stated in the National By-Laws of the Junior Gir11 Units in these words: "The objects of the Junior Girls Units sposored by the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars are to instill into the hearts of our Youth a firm belief in the principles of our Republic, reverence to the F lag of the United States and to assist the Ladies Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars in their activities."

Those objectives are supplemented by a special outlined program for development of initiative, leadership, cooperation, self expression, self reliance, responsibility and talent. Also to study and practice Americanism, participate in va rious welfare and service projects. And

Wednesday, February 25, 1953. its 16th installation ceremony, the Auxiliary honored the Junior Girls with an Anniversary celebration with the girls' mothers as guests.. Following the installation, the girls gave a program of readings and music during which each girl introduced her mother and presented her with a red ro',.e. Each girl in the Unit also received a corsage made and presented to her by the Junior Unit Advisor.

Such fellowship strengthens the bonds which lead members of the Junior Girls into Auxiliary membership when the eligibility age has been reached. Both the membership gaining opportunities and the recognition of a potential source for stimulating community service work and better citizenship are giving impetus to the organizing of Junior Girls Units in the Nation.

Junior Girls Units are steadily earning honors and accomplishing tasks which make them the pride of their sponsoring Auxiliaries, to whom they give loyal aid.

Members and sponsoring Auxiliaries find that working with the Junior Girls Units provide the ways by which the Auxiliary can become active in organizing drill teams, Drum and Bugle Corps, choruses and glee clubs, Junior Red Cross, bowl ling teams, jacks tournaments, youth clubs, camps for summer. Participation in other recreational activities such as dramatics, softball, skating, basketball, sewing, hobby shows, tennis, dancing hikes and tours frequently encouraged by contests and parties„ all of which are permissible as approved projects constantly build bonds of interest between adults and young people. These are the strong foundations of good citizenship for which the Junior Girls Units were created. Organizing such units of Youth Organizations opens 'the doors of op4)ortunity and understanding between the community's adult citizens and youth.

A rich reward in attaining the original objectives, by opening doors to understanding between America's Youth and its adult citizens, under adult guidance, awaits the Auxiliary which establishes a JuntOr Girls Unit. If your Auxiliary has no Junior Girls Unit and is interested in promoting good citizenship in your community, the door of opportunity awaits your action as a sponsor to bring the young daughters and sisters of our veterans into active patriotic service in your community and for the nation."

The February Story I Am An American (Speech for Radio and Platform) You Are an American citizen. You, John Smith, and you, Mary Smith can face future with confidence. You have the most precious possession in the world today — American citizenship. But with the privilege of citizenship comes the responsibility to cherish it.

George Washington and Abraham Lincoln — the two great Americans whose birthdays we celebrate in February— certainly cherished American citizenship.

During many troubled years, in separate periods of 'history, these great men were called upon to make tremendous decisions affecting all American citizens. In every period of history, American men and women have worked together for the good of our country and its citizens.

Today, in - times of stress, when every course seems fraught with perplexities, we can remember -- that determined American citizens have always been also and believe me it is something wonderful what their Youth is doing.

I have reports on other organizational Youth Flograms and what they are doing which I will relate to you from time to time in the Vestnik. We can learn a lot from others' experiences.

It is good to remember also that the constitution of the United States provides all citizens with the set of principles upon which decisions can be based. There is no better way to commemorate the birthdays of Washington and Lincoln than to resolve anew to give our vigorous support to the Constitution. Upholding the Constitution is the Number One responsibility of every American citizen.

Perhaps the best way to sum up this February talk on American citizenship is to recall Abraham Lincoln's closing words in his Second Inaugural address.

When Lincoln delivered this address, the country was in the midst of the Civil War. The .constitution was meeting its most severe test. On the shoulders of President Lincoln the burden lay heavy.

The burden also rested on every citizen in the land — in the South as well as in the North. Yet that great citizen, Abraham Lincoln, was able to speak these words: "With malice towards none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan; to do all which may `achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.

Financial Secretary Urbanovsky pre• sented a report of the auditing committee made pursuant to its audit of the -books and records of the Supreme Lodge, 'as of Dec. 31, 1952, which report was signed by the directors, acting as auditing committee, and which report was ordered filed in the Lodge Record File Book of the Supreme Lodge, with the reports of the other 'officers of the Supreme Lodge. .Upon motion of Director Skrabanek, seconded by Director Holasek, and unanimously carried, the appraisal fees to be charged in connection with loan applications were raised as follows: For loans not exceeding $15,000.00; base $15.00, plus $1.00 for every thousand of the application or fraction thereof; for loans over $15,000.00, base $45.00, plus $1.00 for every thousand of the application or fraction thereof.

It was unanimously agreed that our local organizors shall be permitted to .write any other kind of insurance, for any company, except life insurance.

Upon motion by Director Cerveny, seconded by Director Rod and unanimously carried it was agreed that adopt the annuity or retirement certificate at age 65 on the rates computed and basis recommended by actuary Mr. J. L. Mims.

Upon motion of Director Cervenka', seconded by Director Holasek, and unanimously carried, it was agreed that we adopt the 10-year plan for our new mortgage insurance on the rates computed and basis recommended by our actuary Mr. J. L. Mims.

Our incoming attorney, Brother Adolph D.. Pavlicek, of Houston, Texas, stated that he appreciates having been elected attorney for the Order, that he shall be happy to work and cooperate with the Supreme Lodge and with its individual members, at all times and in every way that he can. Attorney PaVlicek reported to the Supreme Lodge that all the abstracts, held in connection - with our loans, that were in the custody of our former attorney, Brother Kacir, at Temple, were now in his custody in his office at 511 Shell Bldg., Houston, Texas.

Secretary Chupick requested Attorney Pavlicek, that in making requisitions for loans, which were approved subject to our conditioned on the completion of certain contemplated improvements that Attorney , Pavlicek should never make

requsitions until and after he has received due notice from the appraising director or from such party, that the appraising director may delegate with authority to notify the attorney that such improvements are actually completed, and the loan ready to close, and not before, unless attorney Pavlicek specially so states on the requisition.

Secretary Chupick called the attention of the Directors to the extreme importance of obtaining full and complete legal description of the security in the application for a loan and requested that all application for loans be made in duplicate so that in the event one copy should be lost the Supreme Lodge would have the other copy available and also requested that all applications for loans and appraisal reports be either typewritt4n, hand printed, or written legibly, especially the figures, to avoid any possible error.

Treasurer Koliha, presented for the consideration of the Supreme Lodge a detailed explanation of his written report to all members of the Supreme Lodge a report on a number .cf real estate loans. Treasurer Koliha's reports were duly considered by the Supreme Lodge and disposed of by giving Treasurer Koliha instructions and directions of procedure in the various individual cases.

Sick Benefit Department — Brother Koliha, as Director of the Sick Benefit Department, brought to attention, the figures as given in the report for this Department which each of the Supreme Lodge S.P.J.S.T. Directors and officers had been handed by Brother Koliha and which was thoroughly discussed. It was agreed that all applications for claims from members of the Sick Benefit Department justified to payment of a claim, under the old by-laws in force during 1952 for illness that occurred during 1952, are to be paid, regardless if there will not be sufficient amount of the required 500 members in any class of the Sick Benefit Department in 1953, however, that the time be allowed up to the next regular Supreme Lodge meeting which meeting is to be held the second Monday in the month of April 1953 to obtain members for the Sick Benefit Department in the four various classes (A•B-C-D). This was agreed upon. Director Koliha also stated that all remittance received from Local Lodges for Sick Benefit Department received after January 1, 1953 is being held by Br. Koliha and no receipts will be issued for this remittance until at least 500 members in Class "A" will be enrolled for Assessment No. 33 or in any of the other Classes. This was also agreed upon.

the Attorney of the Supreme Lodge fir the last 28 years, and since Director Eineigl, who has been the Director of the Supreme Lodge for the last 8 years, have retired from the service of the Supreme Lodge as of January 1, 1953, with the agreement of all the present members of the Supreme Lodge, obtained either in person or by mail Secretary Chupick was authorized and empowered to purchase for these two retiring members of the Supreme Lodge, remembrance gifts in the nature of 21 jewel Hamilton pocket watches with an inscription on the back that these watches were presented to them by their fellow officers of the Supreme Lodge as a token of appreciation of their many years of faithful service.

One of these watches was !presented to Brother Eineigl, at this time, on behalf of the Supreme Lodge, by Secretary Chupick, with a few additional words of appreciation. Since Brother Kacir was not present at the meeting Director Navratil was delegated with the functicn of delivering the gift watch to Brother Kacir for and on behalf of all the members of the Supreme Loilge.

Director Kubena, owner of the Supreme Lodge Office, stated that the lease contract between him and the Supreme Lodge, for the Supreme Lodge Office building has expired and that he would like to know whether or not the Supreme Lodge expects to continue to rent the same premises until its removal t,0 Temple, and upon what terms, conditions, etc. Secretary Chupick made a motion, which was seconded by Financial Secretary Urbanovsky and unanimously carried, that the Supreme Lodge, continue to pay Director Kubena the same monthly rental of $150.00 per month for the office building until the Supreme Lodge moves to Temple. This Motion was unanimously carried and was accepted by Director Kubena.

President Marek asked every member of the Supreme Lodge, individually, if he had any criticism to make of any transaction of the Supreme Lodge or any question to ask regarding our bond holdings, loans or any investments or any transaction of the Supreme Lodge office or any transaction, resolution, edict, enactment or agreement the Supreme Lodge made, passed. adopted and/or enacted at any time and if so, that he request such member to present it to the attention of the Supreme Lodge at that time so that proper disposition and explanation of it could be made and the matter then recorded in the minutes.

There were about 2,000 bills introduced last session and only about 400 be, came laws. There are fourteen or fifteen ways to kill a bill, and these methods are , used frequently. Many good bills are de.. feated by parliamentary maneuvers. It .. takes a while to learn the ropes, and I .as a freshman member have been working hard on the rules of the House.

All persons interested in appearing before any committees and testifying for or against any bill may do so by noti• fying of their intention to appear in sufficient time for me to schedule them as .witnesses.

The most controversial bill under discussion in the House has been a bill to repeal cross filing of candidates. You will remember that Gov. Shivers became the first Governor in Texas' history to win an election as the cross file candidate of the Republican and Democratic parties 'last November.

•All state-wide candidates were crossfiled by the Republicans after being first nominated in Democratic primaries last summer. Only one state official, AgriCultural Commissioner John C. White, refused to let his name go under the

However, the bill met head-on with ad-Ministration forces on the floor of the House and was returned to committee for • further study by a parliamentary maneuver. Sponsors of the bill said that this re-referral of the bill to committee would kill it. I voted to leave the bill before the House for voting on the fundamental question of cross filing. It has been rumored on the floor of the House that considerable pressure was exerted to have the bill put back in committee.

Other bills of importance to us in Central Texas during the last week were for legislative pay increases to $25.00 per day for 120 days and $5.00 a day thereafter, which passed the House. Before the pay hike can become effective, a similar bill must pass the Senate and be submitted to the people by constitutional amendment for passage.

Of interest to teachers, school officials and those interested in good school pregrams in the $600.00 .a year pay raise for teachers. All :indications point to a rough fight over this proposition. I am _co-sponsoring the bill in the House.

She cherished fond memories of a four room dell house with gabled roof. attic and chimney which had beguilded her childhood. • Our friend discovered that styles in doll houses had changed c•onsicterably.

The familiar boxlike shape had been replaced' by low-slung structures in ranchhouse style.

One salesman showed her an all-metal doll house containin4 seven rooms, a sun-deck, swimming pool, terrace and garage with an overhead operating door.

When she explained that her granddaughter was only five, he said, "Oh, in that case you won't wanta,a doll i•-souse with miniture furniture. Educators and psychologists today agree that preschool children are clumsy with their fingers and feel inferior when handling ;tiny objects."

He recommended "giant-sized" furniture such as a complete kitchen unit containing a 13- inch stove, a 14.7inch washing machine and a two-door refrigerater.

The doll houses intended for girls from eight to 12 years contain built-in \.1.'ers and modern bathroom equipmeat instead of the old-fashioned washstands and tubs. At Dinner With Former President This is the drama of democracy .. .

At one moment Truman was President; minutes later he was a plain citizen. The power and glory of eight years in Washington ended almost as abruptly as when you snap a light switch in your bedroom Months ago, when Truman announced that he would not be a candidate for reelection, the citizens of Independence, Missouri, had been planning a homecoming party for the Trumans, or. as Truman said, the home folks would "put a big pot into a little pot and would brake both of them.' That's the Missouri-talk for a real big night.

They had it three weeks ago. The St. Louis Post-Dspatch had an amusing article about the dinner the friends and neighbors, 600 in number, had with the former President. And Harry S. Truman gave an account of his move from Missouri to Washington and back.

The former President recounted the progress of his homecoming train ride when he was greeted by thousands of persons in trackside gatherings wherever the the train stopped and said that people appeared to be as happy to see us "as if we had been on a whiste-stop campaign."

In another reference to the reception he and Mrs. Truman received at Independence he said that "Nobody in the history of the country â&#x20AC;&#x201D; no ex-President ever had a reception like that one we had when we came back."

And, he added, speaking for his wife and daughter, "Thank you, folks. All of us say that, for the wonderful welcome you have given us."

In the spaces between the high spots of his talk the former President recalled that he first was elected to public office in Jackson County in 1922, as a judge of the county court, which here is an administrative post, again to the same court in 1926, to the United States Senate in 1934 and to the Senate again in 1940 :n which he termed "the most vicious campaign against me."

Going back to the senate, he went on, probably proved his undoing. He said he still did not know whether he had done the country any good but that it was in this term that he headed three Senate committees, one of which, the committee investigating wartime expenditures, eventually led to his becoming Vice President of the United States. Thereafter, Truman continued, he succeeded "that great and magnificent person, Franklin D. Roosevelt, one of the greatest Presidents this country ever had."

Musing again on his childhood in In-

dependence, the former President recalled that he was in the public school in Independence in 1892 and that he wore a white cap, of the baseball type. On the visor, he continued, were the names of Grover Cleveland and Adlai Stevenson.

Stevenson, he went on, was the grandfather of the man he backed for President this year and he inquired: "Isn't that a coincidence?" Whether it was the mention of the Stevenson name or the fact that Truman had backed both Stevensons was not clear, but Truman was warmly applauded at the conclusion of the anecdote.

He paid tribute to his school teachers who had helped him get through school there and he pointed out that one of the schools which he had attended had burned down and with it all of the records.

The diners roared with laughter when he followed up with "Nobody knows for sure whether I have any education at all."

The dinner was held in the auditorium of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints. Sixty women, members of the Laurel Club, an intrachurch organization, spent 2 days preparing the meal and 60 others served.

It cost $3.50 and if there had been more people to do the work and more room to do it in, the occasion would have attracted 5,000 or more. Requests for tickets were turned down all over the country. It was primarily for Independence people.

There was an invocation by the Reverend Harold M. Hurst, pastor of the First Baptist Church, which the former President attends, and benediction by the Reverend David C. Patrick, pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church, which is Mrs. Truman's denominational preference.

The menu was tomato juice cocktail, a chopped salad, roast turkey, sage dressing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, giblet gravy, asparagus tips, rolls, butter, jelly, and cherry pie.

With all that and Harry Truman too, it was a good buy.

The former, President mentioned his successor, President Eisenhower, only once. It was during his discussion of the period of his tenure in the White House in which the German and Japanese surrenders of Word War II were accomplished.

"On May 7, 1945," the former President said, "the Germans folded up. The articles of surrender were signed on May 8, my birthday. General Eisenhower sent me the pen that was used, and I still have it."

A little later, on September 2, the Japanese capitulated, Truman went on, and then "our troubles began, sure enough.

"They think they have beef troubles now, they should have been President in 1946," Truman said, with something- of a brisk pick-up in his delivery, "when we had real meat troubles and other troubles and everything else you can think of."

He was unmistakably referring to the trouble the Republic"ans have been having with the disposition of price controls on meat and protection of the cattle growers' and- processors' incomes.

He also was calling attention to the scarcity of meat and of other cOilian requirements and to the industrial strife, price controls, wage controls and the thousand and one other problems which beset his administration in postwar 1946 and kept it in turmoil when the socalled Republican "class of 1946" took control of the Congress.

Cattle raisers were charged in that period with withholding stock from the market to force remove of price controls.

At another point in his oral meanderings, the former President took note of one of his favorite subjects, his stunning defeat of Thomas E. Dewey, Governor of New York, in the 1948 presidential campaign.

Recalling that historic whistle-stop undertaking, he said with a grin: "I haven't a doubt in the world that somebody might have been able to do the job (as President) better but they didn't get the opportunity." His listeners, Republicans, and Democrats. joined in hearty applause of this minor sally, a reference to a new humorous situation in which- litrry Truman was one of the very few people in the United States who thought he had a chance to win that electiron.

The former President spoke easily and with all the assurance of a man who thinks he did a good job whether anyone else thinks so or not. At one point in his talk he said that no President of the United States had been so vilified as he with the possible exception of George Washiington or Abraham Lincoln, and he added: "I have come through it without any scars whatever."

There were misty eyes apparent among the diners when, at the close of the talk, he said that when he and Mrs. Truman got off the train at Independence, January 21, and looked out over the thousands of persons who had come down to the (Continued on page 22.)

A REPUBLIC OR A DEMOCRACY -Why don't you say what you mean?

Why don't you point out the difference between a republic and a democracy to the readers of the Vestnik?"

When I received the letter which contained these remarks, I threw it in the wastebasket. Later in the day, I reached for it and started to think. Maybe, the member is right. Maybe, I have done some Lose thinking and loose writing.

Maybe, I should explain my failure by using the word "democracy" too freely.

I went to consult Mr. Webster. And I went to consult some other authorities.

Mr. Webster says: Democracy is a form of government in which 'the supreme power is retained by the people and exert4sed either directly as in absolute, or pure, democracy; or indirectly, as in a republic.

As to the word "republic Mr. Webster is a state in which the sovereign power resides in a certain body of the people, under certain restrictions, and is exercised by elected representatives.

Then I reached for textbooks about government. I started to read, and kept on reading. I found out that my friendly critic, who accused me of substituting the word "democracy" for the word "republic,'' was right.

What I should have known, and what school boy probably knows, that a democracy in the true sense can function in an orderly fashion only in small units. Our local lodges are democratic units. Everybody has a voice and a vote in our local lodges, that is, everybody who comes to a meeting. Those who are absent give their consent to everything by their absence.

Looking deeper into this matter, I found out that the word" democracy" appeared nowhere in the Declaration of Independence nor the Constitution of the United States. I am inclined to think that the founders of the United States clearly understood, the distinction of the two words. Thomas Jefferson, though he is the "patron saint' of the Democratic Party today, called himself a Republican. He died six years before the first National Democratic Conven tion was held.

It was the phrase of Woodrow Wilson, "Make the world safe for democracy'„ which made the word "democracy" used by everyone. Since then, I believe, the word was used more and more, replacing the more correct word "republic."

THE FIRST DICTIONARIES One of our SPJST Sisters asked recently for information. She wanted to know about the first English dictionary. She also wanted to know when the first Ger-1 man dictionary was compiled, and she was curious about tile Czech dictionaries or the first English Czech dictionary. I published her request some five or six weeks agon, and I asked our professors in the Slavonic Departments to help me.

Last week, Dr. John M. Skrivanek, professor of Czech and Russian at the Agricultural and Mechanical College (A&M College), at College Station, sent me the information which I asked fOr. I am sure that our readers will appreciate Dr. Skrivanek's article about the first dictionaries.

CHAIR OF SLAVONIC LANGUAGES College Station, Texas Dear Editor: Just a few notes on the information which was asked for (twice) in the VESTNIK. Some of the dates which I shall give you will appear to the contradictory; this is to be expected when consulting several sources: The first English dictionary was published in 1721, the author, Nathan Bailey. The "Encyclopedia Britannica" gives the date 1730, but some of the other sources give the former date. Unless one desires the name of a particular dictionary, dealing with a specified field, it is rather difficult to credit any particular individual. For example, Edward Phillips, a nephew of John Milton, described his 1 New World of English Words, published in 1658, as containing the interpretation of such "hard words" as are derived froin other than the English language. In short, the first dictionaries of English words were not meant to be complete, but were limited to "hard words" typically those derived from foreign languages. Some even gave the words in the English language, but the explanations were in Latin. According to some sources, Nathan Bailey, made the first approach to success in collecting and defining all words in good usage in the English Aunguage in his folio dictionary published in 1721 (1730?). Too, many teachers give Dr. Samuel Johnson credit for being the first. His dictionary, published in 1755, established a style-standard for works of this kond.

Checking additional sources, 'among them The New Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedia, one finds the following: "The first English dictionary is `Promptorium Parvulorum", "compiled in 1440 by the

Dominican monk Galfridus Grammaticus in Norfolk, England, and printed in 1499; this work contained English words defined in Latin". Therefore, in my 'esthnation, it was not exactly an English dictionary. In short, it was an EnglishLatin dictionary. Finally, the Encyclopedia further states: "Robert CaWdrey (fl. 1604), in The Table of Hard Words (1604), produced the first dictionary giving definitions in English of English words". I suppose that makes Cawdrey's dictionary the first completely English dictionary.

2. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm compiled the first German dictionary in 1854 (voltime I).

3. The first English-Czech dictionary in America, was compiled by Karel Jonag in Racine, Wisconsin in 1876. I am sure it is the same one used by my greatgrandfather, and most surely, by my grandfather. Since the former came here some twenty-one years earlier (1855) I am not sure that he lived long enough to see it. I was pleasantly surprised to find it listed at the head of all dictionaries in a book entitled "Famous First Facts", page 162. I only regret that Karel Jon“ gave it the title, "Bohemian-American Dictionary", which was wrong and has confused thousands of people.

4. The compilation of Czech dictionaries is really an interesting topic. One finds that several Latin-Czech dictionaries were compiled as far back as the 14th century. This was done in connection with the translation of the Bible.

John Huss, in his attempt to improve the Czech translation of the Bible, used the Latin-Czech dictionaries, such as "Bohemarius Mair" and "Bohemarius Minon"; also the "Rajhrad Dictionary" and the "Pressburg Dictionary". The Pressburg dictionary contained only about 9,000 words. Two hundred years later, around 1585, Daniel Veleslavin compiled another Latin-Czech "Dictionarium linguae", and, around 1675, Vaclav Jan Rosa prepared "Thesaurus linguae Bohemicac", also Latin-Czech dictionary.

Brief German-Czech dictionary was compiled in 1791 by Frantisek J. Tomsa; then, in 1802, Josef Dobrovsky published his two volumes of Czech-German dictionary. A complete Czech dictionary was compiled by Josef Jungman when his five-volume dictionary was published in 1834-1839.

I regret that the library of the Department of Modern Languages here does not have any references to the facts stated in the preceding paragraph. Since we are a new department, very few books are here that deal with the Slavonic element.

Perhaps some of our people would like to send Czech books to the library. I can't think of a better place, except our Headquarters perhaps, to send the books. The donor's name appear in the book, and it is at least available to the public.

History of the Czech Settlements in Texas ABSTRACT In 1850, Texas was a new state with plenty of land and opportunities and with a total population of only 212,592.

The Czech people heard of this new state which had just been annexed to the Unit ed States. Since they were living under the Austro-Hungarian yoke and had the opportunity to immigrate into this country; many choose Texas.

Dr. Anthony Dignowity was the first Czech t.,} settle in Texas arriving in 1832. Josef Lesikar received the credit for bringing about immigration of the Czech people to Texas. Bohumil Menzl was the first Czech priest to help build • churches in Texas. The first homes of the Czechs were called "loksaky" (a log cabin with a dirt floor and a grass roof).

The location of the Czech communities is North from Brownsville to Denton in the rich black land belt. Fort Worth, Dallas and Houston have a great number, of Czechs. Towns which have over 35 per cent of their population being of Czech extraction are Taylor, Ennis, Granger and Shiner. The Czechs are among the most intelligent people, and • wherever they settle they embed their culture and ,educational abilities into that community.

In as much as the inherent aptitude of the Czechs leans toward handicraft and husbandry, they settled on 'the richest soil in the state. the black lands and upper coastal plains belt, stretching across the state, North and South from Denton to Brownsville. Today the most densely populated counties are Fayette, with twenty-two Czech communities; Lavaca with thirteen; Austin, Burleson, Williamson with ten each, and Wharton, McLennan, Fort Bend with nine each. In all there are 252 communities. A community designed as such, had a local lodge of some benevolent organization or a parish or churdh or all three.

The Nestor of physians was Dr. Anton M. Dignowity who arrived in 1832. Dr. Dignowity holds the distinction of being the first Czech to come to Texas. He was a great friend of Sam Houston and together they played important roles in the history of the state. Dobrodruistvi dvou dragorui pied padesati lety Abych dopovedel tu historku o Anetce Move, ktera nam posiala psanieko at od italskYch hranic a slibovala. te se sejderne po Novern rode ye Vidni.

Jedno nedelni odpoledne jsme s Jifikern tak okbuneli ten tfeti videriskY okres, kde Anetky Oekove sestra a gvakr Jaroslav TupY meli restaurant. Koneene jsme'to na gli a zmaelli kliku u Jaroslava. Vegli jsme dovnitf a usednuli v jednom rohu vedle kuchyne, abychom byli trochu v zavetfi. tadneho vojaka tam nebylo. Meli jsme helmice na hlavach, nebot' v nedeli museli ve Vidni vojaci nosit pfilby nebo flaky.

Nechali jsme si donest pivo a pfitom jsme sledovali navg tevniky i obsluhu. Po chvilce otevfely se boeni dvefe a v tech se objevilo device jako Anetka. Devoe nag nepozorovalo. Ja drcnul do Jifika, abychom dopili. Tak jsme nag e sklenice vyprazdnili a zaklepali pro dalgi.
