FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK issue a proclamation to make it a holiday in Virginia. He was adviekd not to issue it because most of the citizens Of the state still considered it the remains of puritan fanatic zeal. All this action did raise great public controversy. Finally, in 1857, Governor Wile, successor to Johns, issued a proclamation without asking advice, and the people celebrated the day in true Southern style. Eight Southern states celebrated the day until the Civil War began, but in 1864 President Lincoln proclaimed the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving, and the whole country has observed Thanksgiving ever since, with a one week change in the date during President Franklin D. ReoEuvelt's administration.

Thanksgiving Day in the United States is a day annually set aside for thanksgiving. Proclamations by the presidents and the governors of the various states have made it a national holiday. Thanksgiving, as old as the human race, has the same idea everywhere. It i9 the appreciation for harvest. By Whatever name Thanksgiving is celebrated whether it be in some village in Czechoslovakia, or Poland, or Finland, or Italy, or in our own country in our own day of celebrating, it meant the same appreciation of the harvest.
