NOVEMBER 18, 1970

FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Sunday, October 25 the District V meeting was held in Pasadena. We regret to say again that there,, also, the attendance was rather small. Being busy with the pictures of the various youth booths and youth prize winners, your editor did not have the occasion to attend but a small portion of the meeting. Here it would be proper to state that there seems to be a rather large majority of members in favor of shorter district meetings since this Was the last ofthe district meetings for 1970. All district officers and planning committees of all districts would do well to give this some rather serious thought when planning future district meetings. We must remember that the membership will not sit too long and listen to too lengthy speeches, reports or what-have-you. We feel that brief Constructive discussions will do much to attract more members and let them feel that they were a part of and enjoyed he meeting.

Sunday, November 8 we went to Houston to see the Czech operetta "Muziky, Muziky" preSented by the 50year-old Dramatic Club "Hiahol" of 88. It was GOOD and we will have more to say about this next week. For now, let us state that if and when it is presented again, DO NOT miss seeing it. There is a rather long Czech editorial in this issue about it.

HALF OF LIFE IS "IF" The children will go to college IF there is money enough. A college fund will be accumulated IF there is time enough. Retirement at 60 or 65 will be possible IF there is money enough. A retirement fund can be created IF there is time enough. The family will have a home IF there is money enough. The mortgage debt, will be paid off IF there is time enough. No emergency can shatter their plans IF there is money enough. Enough money can be saved to meet any emergency IF there is time enough. BUT WHAT IF THERE ISN'T ENOUGH TIME? —New York State Messenger Two simple questions. If you know what questions to ask you may break what seems to be the most unbreakable of contracts. Leo Rosten gives an example. The shoemaker's wife was sick and he called a. doctor. "Please, doctor, save her," cried the husband. "I'll pay anything, even if I have to sell everything I own." "But what if I can't cure her?" "I'll pay you whether you cure her or kill her." A week later the woman died. The doctor sent the shoemaker a big bill.

The poor man suggested that they go to the rabbi to discuss the fee. The rabbi asked the doctor: "What was your agreement with this man?" "He agreed to pay me for treating his wife," said the doctor, "whether I killed her or cured her." "And did you cure her?" "No." "Did you kill her?" "Certainly not."' "Then under what contract are you claiming your fee?" asked the rabbi. ♦ • Six basic needs. You may want to set down your own list of your basic needs. Until you make your own list it may be well to accept what is offered to you by Dr. John Schindler in his book "How to Live 365 Days a Year": 1. The need for love. 2. The need for security. 3. The need for creative expression. 4. The need for recognition. 5. The need for new experiences. 6. The need for self esteem. When you analyze your own life, how many of these needs are met to make your life one of satisfaction? The year Richard Milhous Nixon graduated from Whittier College in Southern California, the annual cost of education at that school, including tuition, fees, room and board, came tc) $400. That was in 1934. Today the bill for a year of education at Whittier
