From The Editor Act the way your conscience tell; you to act. What matters most is tha; you. act Os you know you ought, even a t the risk of unpleasant consequences. That is the discipline of freedom, and that is the essence of bravery. Fear of n.iticism by others often holds us back from trying some plan or idea thaA has occurred to us. Criticism comes cheaply. It can be made by anyone on any basis. The merit of any idea is seldom determined by the criticism leveled against it. Only one thing counts .. . the results that are obtained from the idea. What others may say wi.1 be changed to a chorus of praise one we have demonstrated the success the same idea upon which those very individuals heaped enormous criticism when it was first presented.

If you go through life before retirement just working at your profession without developing cultural interests apart from your work, life can indeed become vacant when you achieve the golden opportunity of retirement leisure. The habit of developing these interests can hardly be over-emphasized as a factor in the enthusiasm and enjoyment of the second half of life.

When is the best time to cultivate this habit? The earlier the easier; but it is never too late. You never can tell .what a stimulating and enjoyable life you are missing unless you try.

Many people have found unsuspected pleasure in going to concerts and attending op4a performanees, and once introduced to them have biIguu learning all they can about music and drama. Once you start exploring, you will find so many fascinating things to do and learn that it will be a p fizzle to you why you never did them before. Throughout our entire lives we should be continually curious and constantly learning about everything this world of ours has to offer. Education is really the growth of understanding and insight, not just the accumulation of facts we all had to learn in school.

STATE YAD ROYALTY Dear Readers, The 1970 State YAD Royalty pageant was an impressive success. Over 500 people assembled at Linden Hall to witness what has been termed by many as one of our most elegant pageants. Needless to say, the hard-working members of Lodge No. 66 deserve much credit for all their efforts to make our day the beautiful affair that it was.

We are also very proud of all our royalty candidates. It was a difficult task for our competent judges to select the most outstanding.

Newsbriefs Emil Divis, 30, passed away in M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, on October 6. Burial took place on October 8 in Bellwood Memorial Park ber Temple. Brother Divis was a of SPJST Lodge No. 47 Brother Adolph Mach, age 82, passed away on October 3, 1970 in Axtell, Texas. He was interred in Pavelka Cemetery (SPJST) in Mart, Texas, and was a member of Lodge Neve Kvety No 35, Elk, Texas.

0 Sister Albina Sulak, age 74, passed away September 17, 1970 in Lufkin, Texas. She was placed to eternal rest in National Cemetery, East Bernard, and was a member of Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28, East Bernard.

Sister Bettie M. Brovec, age 78, passed away Se p tember 14, 1970 in Burnet; Texas. Interment was in Rosewood Cemetery, Houston, and she was a member of Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88.

Brother Lester Jacobs, age 62, succumbed September 19, 1970 in Bonston. He was buried in South Park Cemetery, Pearland, Texas, and was a member Of Lodge Wharton No. 151.

Features In a nuptial ceremony in the Christ the King Catholic Church in Houskon, Sunday at 2 o'clock, September 13, Franklin Marak and Darlene Charbula were wed.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Charbula of Houston, and the parents of the groom are Mr. and Mrs. John Marak of Buckholts. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore an empire styled gown of scalloped Peau D Ange lace and organza.

The skirt and long full sleeves) were enriched with lace appliques. She completed her gown with a long cathedral mantilla veil. She carried a cascade of white roses tinted with gold and centered with an orchard orchid.

Mrs. Vickie Charbula, sister-in-law of the bride was matron of honor. Serving as bridesmaids were Mary Zucha, sister of the groom, Patsy Dean, Vickie Hajovsky, Phillis Elm., Barbara Emery, Gladys Dohnalik, Janice Dohnalik, Georgia Ann Janek, and little Miss Cynthia Zucha sierved as flower girl.

cousToN NUPTIAL RITES UNITE DARLENE CHARBULA AND FRANKLIN NIARAK The ten formal dresses were alike, made of sunshine gold chiffon and satin and all ten were empire styled with long full sleeves with bishop cuff9 to match the bride's. Wearing matching hairpieces and shoes, all the bridesmaids carried cascades of light and dark orchard asters with long orchard streamers. The little miss carried a basket of orchard asters. The two grandmothers, Mrs. Peter Nikel and Mrs. Robert Charbula, wore corsages of orchard asters.

Miss Paullett Bisso served at the rice and reception table, wearing a long formal of yellow with a corsage of orchard asters.

Robert Charbula, brother of the bride, was best man. Groomsmen were Paul Zucha, brother-in-law of the groom, Mike Haynes), Gene Beyer, Larry Harris, Eddie Diver, August Doh-

Little Darrell Sumbera served as ring bearer.

Ushers were Leonard Sumbera and Anton Zucha. All wore black tuxedos.

For her daughter's wedding, Mrs. Charbula wore a orange pink, with full skirt and long full sleeves, chiffon dress with satin shoes to match. The groom's mother wore a two-piece suit.

Both mothers wore orchid corsages.

Following the religious) rites a large reception was held at SPJST Lodge No. 88, which consisted of a barbecue dinner with all the trimmings. Music was furnished by Jimmie Brosch and his Country Boys. Shortly after the grand march, the four-tiered wedding cake and groom's German chocolate cake were cut and served. Later the bride's veil removal took place.

After the dance the couple left for

Dear Members of All Lodges in Dist. V: We have a very important event coming up in our district. Our District V fall meeting will be held on October 25. We would like everyone to come out and participate in a good day of fellowship with all the sisters and brothers and their friends. This will be an evening of enjoyment for all ages.

We will start the day with a barbecued beef dinner from 11:30 until ?

The business meeting will be at 1:30, and the youth clubs will have booths set up for the evening. There will be a dance from 5 to 9 p.m.

We are all fraternal brothers and sisters, so let's support our district functions. The organizers are selling tickets for the dinner in advance, so please buy your tickets early so we can plan our dinner. The host lodge is Lodge 172, Pasadena. The place is Petro-Tex Recreation Building, 8600 Park Place Blvd., at old Galveston Road. All you sisters bring your favorite pastry, because everyone sure enjoys eating the good pastry!

Dear Members, President Henry Slovak, called the meeting to order at 3 p.m. The Plc dge of Allegiance and lodge motto were led by the youth club.

All lodge officers were present. the September minutes, after some corrections were made, were acceptec as read.

Visitors were: Mrs. Kay McIl •oy, Mrs. Lillian Cox and Mrs. Batt Vernette.

Bro. Frank Parma had Sis. EngAke read the minutes of the board of t: ustees' meeting held on Monday ni ;ht, October 5, at Linden Hall. Bro. Parma, said there would be a repair and cleanup day on Saturday, November 7, all day.

The chairmen of all committees Faye their quarterly reports. Bro. Eugene Gerlich, reported the lodge, Linden Hall, and youth club books had teen audited. All are up to date and in excellent order. Bro. Gerlich complimented Sis. Engelke, on her excellent ly okkeeping of the lodge books. All rep orts were very good.

Sister Dibble Parma reported on the youth club. She was very proud of the youth who attended the District III meeting at Elk Lodge 35. There Irere 21 present. She was proud of the ;Ipecial recognition, the the youth sub received for having an increase of ten or more average members. In Dis.riet III, Lodge 66 and Lodge 6 were the two who had this average. At the ')istrict III meeting, State YAD winner; at El Campo were given checks. They were: Tana Kutni, Michael Ga der, Donna Gerlich, Cynthia and Ma:..tha Slovak.

Congratulations to all of you. The youth club sent $25 to Lodge No. 25, EnniS youth club. Sis. Parma said that

6 if the youth come dressed in costumes on October, they .would earn points.

There will be prizes awarded for the prettiest, the tackiest, and the most original. There will be three age groups: 1) all youth, ages up to 10 years, 2) 11 to 18 years, 3) adults.

Health Committee report. Sis. Agnes Mazanec has sent congratulatory cards to: Mr. and Mrs. Gene Miller, upon the arrival of a baby girl, and Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter, upon the arrival of a baby boy. The proud grandparents are Bro. and SO. Frank Miller. Congratulations to the proud grandparents, Bro. and Sis. Chris Spence on the arrival of a grandson, born to Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Marek; she is the former Zephyr Spence. Bro. and Sis. Otto Hanus are the great-grandparents.

Sympathy cards were sent to: the Frank Miller family on the loss of Sis. Miller's sister, and Mrs. Rosie Supak, on the loss of her mother, Mrs. Charanza. Our sympathy is extended to these families on the loss of their loved ones.

May they rest in peace.

Sis. Frances Pustejovsky has been ill, but is better, now. We hope she is doing O.K. A card was sent to Bro. and Sis. Charlie Soukup on their 50th anniversary. May we also add congratulations to Bro. and Sis. Frank Leshikar, who just recently celebrated their 35th anniversary.

Sis. Engelke gave out the refund checks. She reported Lodge 66 had bought $25 worth of tickets from Lodge 25, Ennis to help them on their building fund.

President Slovak reported we now have a couple operating the kitchen.

They are very efficient and serve delicious Spanish food, also hot dogs, hamburgers and french fries. The food is very good.

M'emhrs, please remember there will be elections of officers at the November meeting, which will be on Sunday, November 15, beginning at 2 p.m., promptly. It was passed to elect nine members to the board of trustees, instead of the five, as has been done before, so think about who you would like to have serve as officers, trustees, and other committees; then give them your support.

Remember, Halloween costume dance, Sunday, October 25, from 5 to 9 p.m. It is free, music by Tommy Chudej's band.

The repair and clean-up day on Saturday, November 7 — all day.

The meeting adjourned at 4:35 p.m.

After the youth club meeting, a delicious supper was enjoyed by all.

'Then everyone enjoyed the youth club's games. It was a lot of fun and some very nice prizes were won.

LODGE NO. 4, HALLETTSVILLE Dear Members, The regular monthly meeting of our lodge was held on Sunday, October 11, with President Erwin Holy presiding.

Sharon Miculka, Chris Muenster and Annie Zabransky led our lodge in the pledge to the flag.

A resolution of sympathy was then read for our departed brother, Henry Ehler, Sr. Minutes of the last meeting were

President Holy reported that the lodge has permission to make tables to put in our regular meeting place.

It was voted on to have tables made to use at our meetings. PreSident Holy appointed Johnnie Zak to make the tables.

Brothers Henry Muenster and Frank Holub are on the sick list this month.

The members wish them, and any other sick members, a speedy recovery.

Glad to see Brother Alvin Mikush attended the meeting after a short stay in the hospital last month.

Under new business it was voted to have election of officers at the November meeting.

Youth leader, Mrs. Linda Mikush, and her assistant, Mrs. Leona Miculka, reported on the SPJST Pall. College of Knowledge they attended in La Salle on October 10.

Premium refund checks were then given out and the meeting adjourned.

The youth club meeting followed.

The rest of the afternoon was spent in conversation and playing games. Refreshments and lunch were served.

by Evelyn Holy. The adult door prize went to Ervin Holy and the children's door prize went to Diane Holy.

Sister Eva Hurta was in Kings Daughters Hospital and is doing well.

Wednesday, October 21, 1970 Fraternal Congress Convention in Temple on October 23, and the youth club will have a float in the Christmas parade on December 4. The mother lodge voted to help with this float.

LODGE NO. 83, 1110USTON Dear Members, The lodge had a nice meeting on October 12. President Tim Kostom called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m., and Flag Bearer Garry Zalesky presented the colors and led the members in the pledge of allegiance. The members stood in silent tribute to departed Sister Bettie Brovec. The secretary read the minutes, which were approved as read, the correspondence, and the list of 56 applicants and 3 social members. These were accepted, and the new members were initiated

by President Kostom and Vice President Ernest Hanka.

Financial Secretary Ellen Gill gave her report and stated that we have 6,914 members. Treasurer Jerry Ermis gave the quarterly report. Committee financial reports were given by Rosalee Kostom for the Entertainment, Ed Kadlecek for the Social Night, Jack Gill for the Bar, H. Jarisch for the Blue Room, and Alfred .Hilsher for the Board. Alfred asked all to continue working even though the debts are paid, for there are many expenses for the upkeep and the taxes. He stated that 1,300 members were given a good barbecued beef dinner on Homecoming Day and that the day turned out so successfully through the hard work of the members.

Youth Leader Mina Murray reported that the youth danced the Beseda at the dedication of the Rest Home and that the youth would participate on Czech Day and at the district meeting.

Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox announced the following dances: Rudy Kurtz on Oct. 17. Ray Jurecka on Oct. 24, Vrazels on Oct. 31, Harry Czarnek and the Texas Duchmen on Nov. 7, Blames on Nov. 14, Lee Roy Matocha on Nov. 21, the pre-Thanksgiving dance on Wednesday, Nov. 25 with Adolph Hofner irom San Antonio, and the Cloverleafs on Nov. 28. He announced that on November 15, the Convention Fund Committee of Lodges 88 and 142 will sponsor a suecial beef dinner made by the famous L. A. Mikes recipe; the dinner will be followed by a battle dance between Vrazels and The Fabulous Six. Harley explained the registration of guests at the dances is being done to obtain guest cards for all of our guests.

President Kostom announced that the Dramatic Club will present a great musical comedy on Sunday, November 8. Tins will really be a fine production of beautiful music and beautiful costumes; one that you will truly enjoy. Tim invited all to come and to pass the word around to your neighbors and friends. Please circle November 8 on your calendar so you won't miss this musical comedy directed by talented Birdie Hilsher. Our Dramatic Club has been presenting plays for over 50 years, and one way we can show our. appreciation for all their hard work is to come to their plays and get others to come, so won't you pick up that phone and call at least five people and tell them about this great play, or write some cards to relatives and friends out of town?

Evelyn Mikeska reported for the Birthday Club. She stated that September was their best month so far, leading in the number of guests and money made at their luncheons. Then she reported for the organizers and announced that Helen Hegwood was the district winner of the trip to the Fraternal Congress. Evelyn also announced that the organizers. are selling advance tickets for the dinner at the district meeting and bazaar on October 25 at Petro-Tex Recreation Building, 8600 Park Place, with Lodge 172 Pasadena as host. The youth will have booths, and there will be a dance with the popular Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen playing.

Lillian Finn invited all to the Birthday Club luncheon and announced that Louis and Oleta Hanus paid for

all the expenses of the club dinner on the first Wednesday and Rosalee KOstom donated a beautiful cake for the dinner; they did this in memory of their mother, Sister Rose Hanus„ faithful worker of our lodge for many years.

Frances Olexa, Louise Kadlecek, Steve Kelly, Bill Malak. and Frank Tymel were appointed by the president and vice president to serve on the Rules and Regulations Committee.

Ernest Hanka reported on the Directors' meeting at Temple and stated that the fraternal organizations have lost their fight in Congress and that effective in May, 101, all unrelated come above $5,000 will be taxed. He invited all to come to the Czech Day Celebration. Ernie complimented highly the performance of our choral group and Beseda dancers at the dedication of the Rest Home. He urged all to dome to the district meeting and ba'-, zaar on October 25 and to the Corntetition Fund beef dinner and battle dance at Lodge 88 on November 15.

Louis Hanus and Emil Horelica surprised the members with a clever skit based on a wager that they made in 1965 when Louis made the propheey. that our building would be paid off by 1970. Emil stated that this was one wager he was most happy to pay and presented one hundred one-dollar bills, to Louis who decided it should go 'to' the members. They both decided ta donate the money to the hard-working Birthday Club Sisters and presented the money to their treasurer, Mary.

Tilich, who graciously thanked them.

Gary Zaludek, son of Ruth Zaludek and the late William Zaludek, is In the Philippines and will be home on December 15; that's mighty good news, Gary, and we are looking forward to seeing you! As always, when popular Lee Roy Matocha plays, there was a huge crowd at his dance at our lodge and all were complimenting his good music! Louise and Ed Kadlecek had charge of the dance and were helped

by Margaret and Herman Liebscher.

There were quite a number of out-oftown people enjoying Lee Roy's music (from as far as San Antonio), and among these were Elsie and Frank Brdecka and their friends of Rosenberg. Congratulations go to parents Raycine and Robert Mistier, grandparents Birdie and Alfred Hilsher, greatgrandmother Alhina Wisher of La Grange and great-grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Elo Knippel of Fayetteville, on the arrival of a pretty baby girl, Holly Robin Hilsher. Mary Tilich would make a good secretary, because she always has that pen and paper when anyone needs some. District Organizer Evelyn Mikeska had a class for our lodge organizers and helped us with our problems. Not only can L. A. Mikes make that good beef dinner, but he can also tell a good joke in Czech!

Frances and Mr. and Mrs. Friar spent a three-week vacation in Las Vegas.

Get-well wishes go to Mr. Frank Sembera of Flatonia, father of our member, Frankie Seinbera. Congratulations go to Marian and L. A. Mikes on their 32nd wedding anniversary, which they celebrated at the well-attended Clarence Baca dance, where all enjoyed the good Baca music! Dear Members and Friends, Our dance at Almeda Mall last Sat. urday, October 10, was a tremendous success. All of the tables were occupied and the dance floor was crowded at times. Several parties requested that we start reserving tables at our future dances. Sister June Stewart, our youth leader, not only raised money for the free chili supper, but also entertained the dancing crowd with her dancing broom. Ask Sister Stewart about this event. Bro. Gordon Hrabel did quite well auctioning off the beautiful cakes donated by members and guests alike.

And Sister Lillia Mae Peter did exceptionally well with her project. Our special thanks and appreciation to Bro. Frank Myer and his wife, Sister Elizabeth, for being in charge of the social and making it a tre,mendous success. Also, thanks to our lodge members for bringing out their guests.

The District V fall meeting will be held Sunday, October 25, at the PetroTex Recreation Center, hosted by Rozkvet Lodge No. 172, Pasadena. The Petro-Tex Center is located at 8600 Park Place Blvd., and Galveston Road in Houston.

A barbecue dinner will be served from 11:30 till? The district meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen will furnish the music for our dance from 5 to 9 p.m. Our barbecue dinner will be complimented by pastries and coffee. Beer and soft drinks will also be available.

We will have entertainment for the entire family throughout the day, because the district meeting wilt be held in an adjoining; large room, PetroTex Recreation Center offers us a nice big haul witn ample parking space and park-like grounds with beautiful big trees. Come out and join us on Sunday, October 25. • There will be a free chili supper on Thursday, October 22, for members of Lodge 172, and their immediate families only. This supper is put on free of charge by Sister June Stewart, our youth leader and her youth club. Besides chili, ,coffee, and iced tea, pastries will also be served. Sister Stewart requests that each lady bring her favorite pastry. All of the children are requested to wear their Halloween costumes to the chili supper, because prizes will be awarded. Correspondence received were a thank you note from Rest Home No. II for the donation of $400 and an invitation from Lodge No. 2'J Taylor to participate in a program on November 15.

Sister Jerlene Balusek donated her refund check of $5.32 in memory of her father, Harold Denker.

Chairmen's reports were very impressive. The audit report was given

by Brother Anton Moth Reported on the sick list that Sunday were: Sister Lizzie Kosarek, a patient at John's Community Hospital in Taylor, who is a resident in the Taylor Rest Home No. 1; Sister Jerlene Balusek was a patient at Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Tem ple; Brother Charles Mikulas, Sr., was listed as ill at home but under the doctor's care for quite some time; and Brothers Emil S. Divis Ili, and Frankle Novosad, both patients in M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston. Both have passed away since the meeting. Both were young amen whose lives were cut short by the disease cancer. Our deepest sympathy to the families of both of these fine men. Brother Novosad was an active member and a lodge organizer this year soliciting a group of new members and was the auctioneer at

His family will really-miss him, and the lodge.The State Fraternal Congress convention will be held at the Holiday Inn in „ Temple. Our lodge will host the delegates both nights at the lodge hall.

Bro. Joe B. Hejny is president of ,the convention. The deliberations will be open to the public but the space is limited for visitors. Kolaches and cakes are to be baked by volunteers, so if you wish to help with this project contact Sister La Verne Vanicek at 778-1171, Help in the kitchen will be appreciated.

The next meeting will be the election of officers for next year. The committee for the setting of the salaries was chosen: Anton Motl, Jean A. Butler, Clarence Sodek, Lillian Kosarek and myself. Bro. Vanicek and Bro. Kohut, also, ' appointed a seven-member committee to work with the officers on the 1971 local rules and regulations.

These members are: Frank Klinkovsky, Albin Sodek, Emily Mikeska, Woodrow Marek, Jerry Mikulas„Tr. John J. Hruska, and Leslie Mesecke.

Brother Klinkovsky . gave the youth leader's report. He reported on the socials planned by the teens and juniors. The teens' social was last Sunday.

The juniors will have a Halloween costume party on Friday, October 30 from 7 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. The youth club will sponsor a float in the annual Christmas parade on December 4 with the help from the mother lodge. Help with this project, if possible.

Brother Joe B. Hejny conducted the initiation of the new members. There were only four new members present out of a total of 146. This was very disappointing. The organizers must have forgotten to inform their candidates of the initiation and the supper in honor of these members. Brothers Harry Gersback, Jean A. Butler, Andrew Eiben and Sister Dorothy Eiben were the ones present at the meeting. Some arrived late, but in time for the social. We welcome all of our members to our meetings, the first Sunday of every month, unless changed because of District II functions. Changes are published in the Vestnik. The door prize drawing was held before adjournment. Sister Dorothy Eiben was asked to draw the lucky name because she was the only .sister initiated. Whose named did she draw? Her own! This is beginning to be a habit.

LOME NO. 25, ENNIS Dear Brothers and Sisters, Our last monthly meeting was held October 8, at the KJT auditorium, En, nis, at 8 p.m.

-. President Krajca called the meeting tO7 order followed by the pledge of allegiance and the reading of the previous meeting's minutes. After this, several discussions took place on the rebuilding of our new lodge hall. Different places have been located and were to be checked by the building committee. The finance and donations committee reported on their standings and told of their many activities being held. A rummage sale is being held every Saturday at the Alamo Garage.

Dances include the Hi-Toppers at Lodge 84, Dallas, sponsored by Lodge 25, Ennis, October 24 at 8:30 p.m. and also a dance at the K of C Hall in Ennis, sponsored by Lodge 25, with

music by Lonnie Dean. Our next lodge meeting will be held at the K of C Hall, Ennis, at 2 p.m. General election of officers will be held and also a definite site for a new hall will be decided on. As you can see, this will be a very important meeting and we hope to see all Of our members present.

In all the three acts of the operetta MUZIKY, MUZIKY, there will be an a ppearance of a special chorus of villagers, selected from the membership of Lodge Pokrok 88, which in addition to the special arrangements of our folklore will open the second act of the operetta with the unforgettable chorus —Proe bychom se netaili" from Smetana's opera: The Bartered Bride (Prodana Nevesta).

An entertaining play, comical scenes performed by our fine actors, dramatic moments, and music with one beautiful melody following another in the special interludes. All this and then songs from the treasury of our folklore heritage — some your parents and grandparents and you are still singing.

Songs which actually saved the Czech language when the invading. usurpers enslaved the nation, and perhaps your heart will cry a little in the thoughts of the sufferings of our great nation and on the returned glory of the land of our forefathers, the birthplace of our culture and arts.

Wilhelmina Simecek, Dramatic Club SOKOL CORPUS CHRISTI Dear Members, This is an invitation to our Sokol picnic in Corpus Christi, Texas. Sokol is having its 40th annual fall picnic on Sunday, November 8 at the Moravian Hall, Kostoryz Road. A barbecue beef feast with all the trimmings will be served from 12 noon to 2 p. m. DISTRICT II ORGANIZER'S REPORT In September, District II sold 44 members for $240,000 for a grand total of 460 members for $1,871,000. Several new organizers have joined our midst this year. They are all doing extremely well. There have been several large policies sold. Large or small, they all add up.

We lost one of our fellow-organizers.

Brother Frankie Novosad passed away in a Houston hospital the past week.

In behalf of all the organizer3 in District II, may I take this opportunity to express our deepest sympathy to his family. He will be missed by us all.

Brother Willie Dusek was top man in our district by selling 8 members for $42,000. In second place there was a tie between Brother Willie H,ejl, with 2 members for $16,000, and Brother Frank Klinkovsky with 4 members for $16,000. Third place honors went to Brother Clifton Martinets with 1 member for $10,000.

TEXAS FRATERNAL CONGRESS TO MEET IN TEMPLE Delegates from 22 Texas-based fraternal benefit societies will meet in Temple October 21, 22, and 23 in their 70th Annual Convention. Delegates and members of the Texas Fraternal Congress will gather at the Holiday Inn in Temple, 802 N. General Bruce Drive.

Delegates, visitors, and guests to the Congress will be welcomed by TFC President Mr. Joe B. Hejny, vice president of the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST, Temple-based fraternal society, and host to this year's assembly.

Leonard Mikeska, treasurer of tile SPJST, will act as convention chairman.

Some of the highlights of this year's Congress will be the Congress banquet, which will be held at Seaton Star. Hall on Thursday evening. SPJST Director Sid Pokladnik from Dallas will be the principal speaker at that occasion. Another feature will be a special program of talent, presented by the youth from the various member-societies, also set for Seaton Star Hall on Friday evening.

During the regular business sessions, reports will be given by the officers and committees of the Congress. The purpose of the Texas Fraternal Congress is to coordinate the ,efforts of fraternal benefit societies based in Texas in their common interests, and

to cooperate with the National Fraternal Congress in its purpose and program.

The 22 fraternal societies based in Texas represent approximately 360,000 members.

TO ALL YOUTH LEADERS, ORGANIZERS, 85 INTERESTED MEMBERS: The deadline for applying for membership in the SPJST SO as to qualify for the 1971 youth camp is October 31, 1970. A person must be a member or applying for membership by the October 31 date.

However, the new youth member will still be required to meet the activity requirements before he is eligible to attend camp. This requirement is attending 50 per cent bir more of the youth club meetings and 50 per cent of the youth activities. These meetings and activitie count in the lodge where the youth is a member. If the youth is a member of a lodge where there is no youth club or not affiliated with one who has a youth club, the youth must attend 50 per cent of the lodge's regular meetings.

All qualified (membership in the SPJST) and eligible (participant in SPJST youth activities) SPJST youth members are entitled to attend camp.

Their expenses will be paid in equal proportion out of the district's annual camp fund. If camp facilitie9 are limited and elimination is inevitable, the seniority of youth club members will have first consideration.

These requirements have been In effect since 1907.

Sunday, October 25, is the big day at Petro-Tex Recreation Center, 8600 Park Place Blvd. in Pasadena. Pasadena Lodge 172 will be our host and is planning a delicious barbecue dinner. Starting at 1:30 p.m. we will have a carnival celebrating Halloween month.

Booths, snow cones, peanutzÂą, and lots of fun is for the taking: The youth club members of District V will participate in a poster contest. Do you have yours? If not work fast to show off your booth or sihow the activities of your club. It can also be a booster poster to get more youth in your club. Cash prizes will be awarded, plus a bonus to each youth leader having 10 or more posters.

FROM THE LODGE YOUTH LEADERS LODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Members, Our last meeting was well attended, even with all. the rain that afternoon and night. Our harvest game night was a big success. Everybody had a nice time. It was a joy to see how happy everybody was, when they won. Our door prized were won by Frank Parma, Darlene Engelke and Mrs. Towery.

Our youth club is growing, so don't forget it takes all of us working together to make our club a big success.

Those of you who did not make the last meeting, please try to be pre.lent in the November meeting.

Now to our big day coming up. This will be Sunday, October 25. We will have a Halloween costume dance. It will be a free dance; bring your friends. Everybody dress up in a costume or wear something "corny", just for fun and to be different. There will be a grand march for all those who -wear costumes, and prizes will be awarded. We , will have three age groups: 1-11 years, 12-18 years, and adults.

Plan to come out. Bring your friends and have a good time. We will be looking for you. Be sure you wear a costume or dress corny in some way.

LODGE NO. 153, LA SALLE Dear Readers, Our club was well represented at the fall district meeting that was held in Hallettsville on September 27.

We made something for Christmas with Tri-Chem for our pare its. It all turned out real nice.

We wanted to have a Halloween party either on October 31 or October 30, but due to members having other plans for these nights it was then decided not to have the party.

We will have a hamburger supper on November 7 beginning at 5:30. At 5:30 we will eat hamburgers, chips, etc.

The youth club wants to invite their pare:its to this supper. The youth are to bi ing something for dessert.

Th:. youth also wants to go skating, but when will be decided later. Be thinking of a good date for our skating jarty.

Last month Peggy Pavelka baked the birthday cake which was very nicely decoated. Thank you. This month Cynthia Banik brought the birthday cake, Fat. our November meeting Denise Bani'K will bring the birthday cake.

LODGE NO. 48, BEYERSV LLE Dear Readers, The youth met in regular session on October 4. One of the things they planned to do as the social of the month, was a wiener roast and hayride. This was to be on October 11 at Wiesner's pasture. As it turned out, due to the rain, the weiner roast was held at the lodge hall, and the hayride was cancelled. Thanks to the Wiesners for the loan of their barbecue grill. We may not have had a "woodsy" setting for our wiener roast, but also it's not everyday you get to roast weiners on a concrete slab, with cosmos flowers growing all around.

We plan to attend the College of Knowledge at Seaton on October 26.

The visitors were Denise and Lisa Sodek and Mike Hendricks. We were happy to have you. Also, Leonard Wilde joined our youth club. Leonard, we hope you will come to all the meetings and socials.

On October 11, we had our teen social and we went to Rockdale skating and the skating rink was closed so we went bowling in Cameron. It was a rainy day and we had a small turnout but we enjoyed the evening.

On Friday, October 30, at 7 p. m. tiP the junior club will have a cos-tume party and play games at our ball. Prizes will be given. The parent„ are invited to attend and are asked to bring sandwiches and cookies. Drink; will be furnished by the youth club, so mark your calendar and put this ,date down and plan to be with us.

On Thursday night, October .22, at Seaton Star Hall, the Texas Fraternal Congress will have a banquet and there will be a free dance for all. And, again. on Friday night, Oct. 23, there will be supper for the delegates and following the supper, the youth from different fraternal organizations from all over the state will perform for the delegates and visitors. Frankie J. Novosad passed way on Oct. 8, 1970, which was a very ,lad and shocking message for me, as I certainly will miss Bro. Novosad , as we had worked together on man ✓ occasions. For many years we L ttendee. camp, youth socials, worke,! with games, general meetings and ( ommittees together. He was a ver y active young man in our society anon in the community and had many frie ids and was well known and liked by ,d1. Bro. Novosad will always be rem( mbered and missed.

LODGE NO. 154, FORT WORTH Dear Members and Readers, We held our monthly meeting Sunday, October 11.

I would like to thank all the people for being at the meeting. We would like for everyone to know that our youth club is starting to grow. So far, we have two new members and are hopefully looking forward to more.

We would also like to thank Bobby Joe Cleveland for the great performances of "Tiny Tim". He is working on another act. We hope it is as good as the Tiny Tim act.

We talked about our next monthly meeting. It will be held on November 8, the second Sunday of the month.

Mrs. Parma, discussed the Jaycee Airlift. She will let the youth know if we are going or not and if not she said we would probably go to' the March of Dimes Airlift.

After the meeting and supper the youth club sponsored games and the money they make will go to a fund they decide to give it to.

The meeting, was called' to order by President Clarence Kahanek. The prayer was led by Josephine Krpec, and the Pledge of Allegiance was led

by Larry Krpec. We had an attendance of 34 members.

The visitors were as follows: Sandra Dennis, Debbie and Marsha Treybig, Melissa and Cindy Zboril, Mrs. Elmer Treumer, Mrs. Alvin Kahanek, Mrs. Mike Krpec, Sr., and Mrs. J. W. Krutilek.

We discussed selling chances on our quilt. We voted on having a Christmas party at which we will give away the quilt.. We also discussed changing the meeting date. It was decided to have our next meeting on November 1, at 2, p.m.

The meeting was adjourned with a song led by Madilyn Merta.

After the meeting we saw a film on bicycle safety. After the film Patrolman Soderquist talked to us about it. It was enjoyed by all.

We sang a song and had a cosmetic commercial for the ladies. Everyone had a nice time.

We had a visitor from Irving, Alice Lamere. We hope she comes to visit us, again soon.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY In behalf of the entire membership of Lodge 35, Elk, we, the undersigned Resolution Committee, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our dear departed lodge brother, ADOLPH MACH. Brother Mach, age 82, passed away Saturday morning, October 3 at his home in Elk. Funeral services were held at 10 Tuesday, October 6 at Littlepage Funeral Home in Mart, with Rev. S. A. Baker officiating. Burial was in the SPJST Pavelka Cemetery.

Brother Mach was born in Czechoslovakia in 1888. He came to America with his parents and two brothers at the age of 14 years. They settled in the Elk community. He married Katherina Sana and moved to the Waco area where they lived about eight years. He bought a farm in the Elk Community and farmed for 52 years. Three sons and four daughters were born to this union. His wife preceded him in death in 1968.

Brother Mach joined the SPJST at an early age. He was a very active and faithful member of Lodge No. 35 for many years. He held the office of secretary-treasurer for many years and also was a very active organizer for Lodge 35 for many years.

He took interest in the SPJST and was always ready to help when there

11 was work to be done. Brother Mach also attended several of the conventions in his younger years. He will be greatly missed by all the members and friends who knew him.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Mary Henry of Waco, Mrs. Emma Crafton of California, Mrs. Adele Hanus of Waco, and Mrs. Olga Adamek of Mart; three sons, Adolph Mach, Jr..

Of Bellmead, Fred Mach of Waco, and Eddie Mach of Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, Frank Mach and Fred Mach of Axtell, 12 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were: Willie Thun, Johnnie Frazier, Rudolf Vicha, John Mach, Fred Kubitza, and Tony Pavelka.

We at Lodge 35 Elk join this family in their time of grief, and will remember him with honor and respect.

Funeral services were held October 14, 1970 at Condra Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Josef A. Barton officiating. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Funeral services were held September 24, at 2 p.m. from the New Tabor Brethren Church with Rev. Henry E. Beseda, Jr. officiating. Burial was in the New Tabor Cemetery.

He was born near Seaton and had lived in the Temple area all his life except for the time he served in the Air Force during World War II. He was a major in the Air Force Reserve at the time of his death.

He was an active member of the Seaton Brethren Church. He was an organizer of SPJST Lodge No. 47 and

Items of Interest SUMMERTIME FISH FRY There are three ways to fry fish — pan frying, deep-fat frying, ss,,en frying.

All frozen fish should be thawed before frying. For best frying results, cut larger fish into serving-size portions, but smaller fish (pan-dressed size) can be fried whole.

Fish that are to be fried should be dipped in a liquid such as egg, milk, or lemon juice and rolled in your favorite breading or crackers, bread crumbs, or corn meal. Deep-fat fried fish may be covered with a batter.

Do not let the fat smoke or burn when you are pan frying or deep fat frying fish. Burning and smoking fat gives the fish a bad flavor.

Over-fried fish are cooked on a baking pan in a very hot oven (500 degrees F.). Pour a little melted fat or cooking oil over the fish to keep them from drying.

For best cooking, place only one layer of fish at a time in a frying pan, deep-fat fryer, baking pan, or broiler pan.

Turn all pan-fried fish when they are lightly browned on one side. Then cook the fish until they are light brown on the second side. The frying time is relatively short b 8-12 minutes, varying with the thickness of the fish.

If the fish flakes easily when tested with a fork, then it is ready for serving.

For a fried fish favorite that is easy on your pocket book, as well as being quick and easy to prepare, try this convenient new recipe using buttermilk and bisquick.

Buttermilk Fried Fillet; 2 pounds fillets, fresh or frozen 1 cup buttermilk 11/4 cups biscuit mix 2 teaspoons salt Thaw frozen fillets. Skin fillets and cut into serving-size portions. Place fish in a single layer in a shallow baking dish. Pour buttermilk over fish and let stand for 30 minutes, turning once.

Combine biscuit mix and salt. Remove fish from buttermilk and roll in biscuit mix. Fry in hot fat at moderate heat for 4 to 5 minutes or until brown.

Turn carefully and fry 4 to 5 minutes longer or until fish is brown arid flakes easily when tested with a fork. Drain on absorbent paper. Serve with lemon wedges. Serves 6.
