On September 5, 1935, sixty-five years a go, the Treaty of Portsmouth ending the war between Russia and Japan was signed at Portsmouth, New Hampshire. President Theodore Roosevelt was the mediator in this peace PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE IN THIS ISSUE
Settlement, and because of his intervention Russia did not have to pay an indemnity to the victorious Japanese. In place of an indemnity, Russia ceded to Japan the lower half of the island of Sakhalin, a territory which reverted to Russia after Japan's surrender in World War II. Japan's emergence as a world power dates from its success in the war with Russia. For his work as mediator, President Theodore Roosevelt was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906. • • We were advised by Brother Sid Pokladnik of the S.F.J.S.T. Rest, Homes Board of Directors that the dedication of Rest Home No. II has been set for Sunday, October 11, 1970. Lodges should keep this date in mind when planning their activities for the future. • • Life insurance companies earned an average • of 5.12 per cent on invested funds last year, reports the Institute of Life Insurance. The 1969 increase marks the 22nd straight annual rise in the rate of return. In 1968, the average yield from life insurance company portfolios was 4.95 per cent, The average yield figure represents the net return after investment expenses but before federal income taxes.
