From The Editor We were advised by Brother Sid Pokladnik of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes Board of Directors that the dedication of Rest Home No. II has been set for Sunday, October 11, 1970. Lodges should keep this date in mind when planning their activities tor the future.

We saw a good portion of Teas; recently Sunday, August 16, Cyclon, (District II Organizer's Banquet Tuesday, August 18, Snook (District f Organizer's Banquet), Sunday, August 23, El Campo (State YAD), and s Sunday, August 30, Ennis (District III Or ganizer's Banquet). We enjoyed them all very much, however we will write about the State YAD today.

This statement is made in many of the letters in this issue, and it err tainly will not do any harm to repeat it in this editorial: "Those who were not present certainly missed a wonderful Sunday afternoon." The pro !gram — craft, talent, and al! __ was exceptionally good. The 'words your editor spoke to Brother Morris were: "SPJST does not have to stay in the background with this kind of activity,'' and this is certainly true. The program was well coordinated (smooth and continuous), the audience cool (thanks to the facilities of El Campo High School auditorium) and no one seemed to get tired. The youth were great in all fields and the adults are to be applauded for such quiet and attentive attendance. This is the Way all can enjoy an endeavor and the youth certainly deserve it. Your editor regrets that he missed a large pOrtion of the program due to taking pictures on the outside, however, what was seen and the crafts were the best yet. Congratulations, youth! Even though yours truly did not have a dry thread in his shirt, Sunday, September 13 is be ing looked forward to with anticipation. Will we see you at Linden Hall in Elm Mott? Eince is the first such award, the years covered by this award are 1967, 1968. and 1969. The next award in this series will be awarded next year (1971) for the years 1968, 1969, and 1970. To earn this award, you must have been the most active teenager in the whole State of Texas and in the SPJST for this 3-year period. Your point earnings have been carefully checked and tabulated.

II is evident from your activities for this period that you literally slept and lived SPJST. This is the most difficult av:arcl a youngster can achieve in the SPJST bees _use it involves year-round activities for all three years. You are to e commended for this achievement.

We are confident you will remain active and continue setting a . fine example.

The, amount of the scholarship is :13`.50.00. Accordin g; to the rules under which it was adopted, you must publicly, here today, accept or reject this scholarship. If you accept, it will be paid to the university, college, business or trade school of your choice after you have made your decision. If you reject it, it will . automatically go to the runner-up.. Also, if you accept, the scholarship will be available to you indefinitely, no matter when you decide to use it.

Teenagers ages 13 through 19 are eligible to receive this scholarship, so that a youngster could win it as early as age 16 and as late as age 19.

By winning this award, you have created a standard that other teenagers can repair to. Our best wishes and congratulations!

Kamas Reunion The Kamas reunion will be held Sunday, September 20 at the lodge hall (No. 68) in Nelsonville, L. J. Blazek, Secretary, Lodge No. 68 • Pavelka Reunion The annual Pavelka Reunion will be held at the SPJST Hall at Elk Sunday, September 6, 1970. There will be a family-style lunch served. Each family is to bring enough food for themselves and their guests. A short business meeting will be held immediately after lunch. Supper will be served at approximately 5:30. A dance will follow at, 8 p.m. with music by Otis Beck and His Melody Five of Temple. Last year's turnout was real nice, but we are still lacking a great number whom could and should attend.

Our elders are getting on in age and we should try to see one another at least once a year. Hoping to see many of you then, I am Eugene L. Pavelka, Chairman Mrs. Doyle. Gribble, Secy.

Sula—Zavodny Reunion The Sula-Zavodny Reunion will be held a't Fayetteville, Sunday', Sep.. tember 6. Registration will be at 10 a.m. Everybody is to bring a basket lunch. Tea, coffee, plates, etc., will be bought by the committee.

Sister Cellie Engleholm, age 74, passed away August 8, 1970 in Bellville Hospital. She was a member of Lodge Vesmernost No. 68, Nelsonville.

• Sister Jeannette (Btlinka) Young, age 40, passed away July 18, 1970 in Norman, Oklahoma. She was placed to eternal Vest in Fairview 'Cemetery, Norman, Oklahoma, and was a. member of Lodge Needville No. 81.

MRS. BETTY (OLEJNIK) KGHUTEK OLEJNIK-KOHUTEK PLEDGE WEDDING VOWS ,Miss Betty Olejnik and Kenneth Kohutek pledged wedding vows Saturday evening, August 22 at the Temple Brethren Church.

The Rev. Albert Michalik officiated at the double-ring ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Johnny J. Olejnik and the late Mr. Olejnik. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willie E. Kohutek and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Frank )Shenkir of Rogers, and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Kohutek of Temple.

Miss Jeanie Criswell was maid of honor and bridesmaids were Miss Susan Eickenhorst, Miss Claire Langford and. Miss Elaine Skypala. Junior bridesmaids Were Miss Robbie Krcha, and Miss Karen Kohutek.

LODGE NO. 15, BUCKHOLTS

Dear Members and Friends, A fair number of members, plus one visitor attended the regular August meeting which was held Sunday the 9th at 2 p.m.

First, in behalf of Lodge 15, I want to thank all the members who did not attend this meeting for working together and doing such a good job of making our annual picnic a huge success. Without your help it would be impossible to have a success. Once again this brought out the results Of a wonderful fraternal organization.

The business matters of this meeting were channeled to the proper officers and committees and approved; except the auditing committee found it necessary to postpone the audit to the September meeting.

A motion most eagerly approved by the members was, that we set our date and make our plans for the annual membership dinner in the September meeting, so we urge all members to attend and join in these plans.

We want to wish Brother and Sister Ben Vybiral a complete recovery from injuries resulting from an auto accident. They were involved in an accident while r e t u r ning home from the annual picnic. I just heard that Sister Libby Bundle is on the sick list. We all wish you a speedy recovery.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Labaj on the arrival of a baby girl; also to Mr. and Mrs. Jack D. Ruzicka, Jr., on the arrival of a baby boy.

Once again I want to say thanks to everyone who helped out in any way with our picnic. It is greatly appreciated.

This month on our sick list is Brother Caso Spindor, who underwent surgery in St. Joseph's Hospital, but is now recuperating at home.

Our reporter, Brother Joseph Becan, underwent surgery in the same hospital this morning and his doctor assured me, that he is doing just fine.

We wish both our brothers speedy and complete recoveries.

Since Brother Becan will be incapacitated for a little while and our vke-president, Sister delen Kuhala called last night to get the Jotter in the Vestnik earlier because of the Labor Day holiday next week, the duty fall on me, Brother Beean's wife.

I don't know any other news, or any more particulars about the 60th anniversary celebration. That will have to be later. Just be sure to remember the date is September 17.

LODGE NO 84, DALLAS Dear Members, Congratulations to Lodge No. 84's Beseda dancers: Karen and Sharon Mandak, Cindy Horak, Diane Dlabaj, Ronald Petr, Paul Pokladnik, Monte Olsen, and ,Carl Mandak. In crafts: Chris Mandak. Your winning of first place in the State competition, made the trip for all members present from Dallas a happy one.

For awhile it looked as if we were doomed to stay at home. Ours is a dog neighborhood and these dog lovers — you wouldn't believe — cats are taboo.

In July, 1969, this wonderful little lady volunteered to feed our "Twiggy and Bomar" and later tearfully related how her "Andre," a poodle pouted and ignored her for several days. Since then, the other little ladies are careful not to mention our C-A-T-S in the presence of their dogs and do not want to feed them while we are out of town. We finally found a kind soul and headed for Houston, and Saturday night at Lodge 88 we forgot all of our troubles among the members and others who came to enjoy that wonderful Lee Roy Matocha, who by the way, will be at Lodge 84 on Novernber 14.

Sunday, after mass, we headed for El Campo. There we felt more at home because as we drove up we immediately recognized Brother John Becan and son David, helping Sister Geraldine, Cindy, Debby and Jackie unload the craft and science projects. Inside the cafeteria District III Director Sid Pokladnik and his wife, Sister Justine,

were waiting to be served lunch (which was good and plentiful), and Youth Leader Bessie Petr and her daughter, Lynda and friend Jimmy Novak were also in line.

In the auditorium, which was very spacious and so nice and cool, we were surprised to see so many Lodge 84, members. State King Robert Urban and his father Bro. home from a very successful camp with the feeling that you had as much fun as the youth. District V had 156 register for camp, from 6 to 19 years.

Friday morning saw them all scramble for bunks near their best friend. Swimming, archery, trampolines, Tri-Chem, and horseback riding made the three days fly!

It was a pleasant surprise to have Mrs. Kathy Janousek help out at camp craft. Sorry she had to leave early. Brother James Janousek came throrigh with flying colors with his "ice cream in a hole."

I would like to thank a great bunch of chaperonts; Mr. and Mrs. L. Wilkerson, Mr. and. There were happy moments on all the faces there. To stop and look back, even the non-winners had a happy smile, not because they didn't win, but because their friend was just a little bit better. To all of you in District VI, you were great, and to all the youth who took part in all seven districts, you were outstanding. To all those who didn't win, better luck next time.

I am proud of District VI. The group talent, ages 16-19, first place, state, was captured by Talton. Julie Schwartkopf and Monica Merta captured first in craft. La Salle youth club won "Club of the Year." Martha Sembera—Youth Leader of the Year; Sally SemberaTeenager of the Year; Marilyn Vincik — Junior of the year. I am proud to announce that Diane Bouska. Della and Diane Zhanel represented District III, from our club, at El Campo at the State YAD Congratolations to all the winners.

hear Members, Once again camp is over for another year. Everything went over real well.

We had 42 youth from our lodge. The ones who did not go missed a lot of fun. I hope you can make it next year.

I want to thank our chaperones from our lodge and the ones who provided transportation to and from camp.

We went to the State YAD Sunday, August 23 at El Campo. We came back with two first place winners: They were Randy Ho \Tan and Marilyn Veselka. I also wont to thank Patricia Vrana for a Lob well done.

When this letter is read the juniors will have gone to Peppermint Park and the teenager will have had their ball game.

I had a letter from our friends from Temple, Alfred and Martha Klusacek.

We will be over soon to eat fish with you. Alfred, do stay at home some Sunday and we will come to see you and eat fish with you. Two weeks ago, we went by and Alfred and his son came home from their fishing trip.

Martha, the lunch we had together was delicious. I enjoyed the coffee and cake.

Fraternally, Amelia Pokorny, Youth Leader SPJ LODGE NO. 25, ENNIS Dear Readers, The pleasant change of temperature and the school books all around tell us that summer is drawing to a close.

What a busy summer it has been, with all our youth activities, and how we have enjoyed them!

State YAD in El Campo was one of the best yet. The spacious auditorium was ideal for the contestants as well as the audience. Each and every participant gave a fine performance and deserves our thanks and appreciation.

Lodge No. 25 is happy that one of our own made it into the winners circle.

Cathy Prachyl won in individual talent, ages 10-12, and received a beautiful trophy. This young lady has a lot of courage and determination; she once performed at a District YAD with seven stitches in her knee. I'm sure'that other youth leaders and parents could cite similar instances with other youngsters. This is just typical of our SPJST young people; they are a fine group. We also want to thank the others from our lodge who participated: Mike Prachyl in individual talent, ages 13-15; Janice Haskovec in handicraft, ages 16-19; and Stephen Prachyl in _ science and educational, ages 6-9. They were each winners in District III YAD and had fine entries.

While at El Campo, I was glad to be -able to personally thank Brother Kilnkevsky and Sister Sodek of Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club, for the very gen-

erous gift of $40 which the youth sent to our youth club, due to the fact that we lost practically everything we owned when our lodge home burned on July 3. Such kindness gives us a lump in our throat. Perhaps we will be able to show our appreciation in some way when we have our new lodge hall.

Thank you, brothers and sisters.

We are going to open a fund-raising project within a few days, selling light bulbs. There will be sold at the same price as in stores and, since bulbs are used by everyone, this can be a real money-maker for us. Mom and Dad, a lot depends on how much help you can give your youngsters to get around to the various neighborhoods. We are counting on you! We will have some nice prizes, so do your best! Our chairman of this project is Mary Frances Trojacek.

We had 20 adults and 35 youngsters at our outing at Mott Park on August 16, and everyone seemed to have a grand time. Let's see if we can't have even more at our next meeting on September 50 at 3 p.m. in the Community Room of the Citizens National Bank. We plan to have an entertaining program. Bring your painting if you did not finish it at camp. If you have a shirt you would like monogramed or decorated, or anything painted, bring it. We will have some Christmas ornaments also. A word to our parents: In behalf of your youngsters, I want to thank you for all the help and cooperation you have given the youth club. You have been wonderful in thi4 respect and I hope you keep on helping, so that we can continue to grog, ress. Youth clobbers, don't forget to thank mom and dad for all they do for you. We depend on them a lot.

Don't forget to bring someone who might like to join our club to the next meeting. The more of us there are, the more fun we can have.

In closing, I want to salute our SPJST State Queen Janice Haskovec and her duchess, Rita Krajca, who will be ending their year of reign on September 13, at Elm Mott. We are very proud of you and wish you much sue, cess and happiness in the future.

LODGE NO. 4, HALLETTSVILLE Dear Readers, On August 9, the mother lodge hosted a dinner for the members and their families. The meal consisted of stew and all the trimmings. Following the meal the lodge had a short meeting.

After the conclusion of the meeting the youth club had various entertainment for everyone to enjoy. For instance, there was the fishpond and the cakewalk for yOung and old alike. If you wanted to try your luck at winning one of the four prizes provided by the youth club there were always chances to look to. The winners of these great prizes were: 1st, Vernon Zak; 2nd, Elsie Mascheck; 3rd, Kathy Zak; 4th, John Mascheck. The door prizes were also drawn and given to: adult — John Holy; youth — Sharon Miculka.

Following the drawing, the youth club had their meeting. It was decided that we would have a hayride Friday, August 14, starting at 7 p.m.. At the end of the Journey there would be wieners waiting for everyone. Music and refreshments were pro vided all evening and enjoyed by all.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON 'Dear Readers, On August 14, 15, and 16, District V went to C'amp Manison. We had 156 campers with us this year. With all of those campers, we had a great time. We had archery, swimming, trampolines, horseback riding, Tri-Chern, volleyball, a hayride, and square dancing. I would like to thank all the chaperones and District V Youth Director Mrs. Wanda Elzner for making this the 'test camp we have ever had.

We had our Parents Appreciation Night Friday, Ant* 21. We had quite a number of different dishes and the food I was delicious and enjoyed by all parents.

September 13 is the State Royalty Pageant. Please support: Frances Dixon and her duchess. There will be a bus going, so make your reservations now with Mina Murray. So long for now.

There was a lot of talent. It was all good. Our senior group won first place. They did a

dance called "The Good, Bad, and Ugly." Those in the senior group were Madilyn and Monica Merta, Marian and Karen Dorotik, Anita Krpec, Josephine Krpec, Judy Dlohus, and Donna Srubar. I participated in craft but I didn't win. I had a very good time and I hope everybody else did to.

Brother Holubec was born Dec. 23, 1891 in Granger, Texas and came to Runnels County in 1901 as a young lad.

He was married to Albina Urban Oct. 22, 1912 in Rowena. Brother Holubec was a 56 year member of Lodge No. 49. He served as treasurer for 32 years and various other committees. He attended all meetings and socials in the lodge until his health failed.

Surviving are her husband; three sons, Robert Krcha and Daniel Krcha, both Of Temple and Clarence Krcha of San Antonio; three brothers,: Tom Talasek, and Bill Talasek, both of Rosenberg, and Ed Talasek of Temple: a sister. Mrs. Binnie Simek of Temple ; several grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

(CONTINUED) Instruction in the homes, s,'hools, and churches must rectify such fictionalized accounts in re-ordering the study of the Czechs and theirr past.

Since most Czech Americans today were themselves trained from textbooks which largely failed to recognize the contributions of the Czechs, effective integration of Czech history may require a new orientation for everyone concerned. Almost a prerequisite to this is an ingrained quality which we can only hope that everyone concerned will possess — a kind of dedication to humanity itself, which inclUdes a sense of fairness in representing fully and factually the role of the Czechs in Texas, the United States, and the contemporary world society.

Everyone, then, needs a certain sensitivity to the indigenous merits of the Czechs and their contribution to the American culture — not simply as a parallel to the development of the people, the places, and the ideas known as America, but as an integral and interacting part of this development.

Thus the Czech American will do well to read widely about the roles and contributions of his ancestors so that he may develop an intellectual reservoir of knowledge upon which to draw when informing others about the Czechs.

Certain books may help make the Czech American acutely aware of the Czech contributions to the American culture. The books cover historical, cultural, literary, musical, religious, culinary, and educational attributes. It would be exceedingly commendable if every home, school, and church library had one or more of the books from each of the classifications. Individuals may consult their local book stores for copies or order directly from the sources. Complete information on all publications mentioned, including the cost and source, is given at the end of this article.

Historical books about the Czechs in Texas and in the United States are limited in number, especially those written in the English language. One

of the major works relative to the Czechs in Texas is the book entitled "The Czech Pioneers of the Southwest"

by Estelle Hudson and Henry R. Maresh. The book, published in 1934, provides a well-written and fascinating story of the importance and contributions of the Czech settlers in the history of Texas. Several chapters in the volume are given to the men, women, and families who have contributed and are still contributing to the civilization of Texas. An interesting family history of Texans is the book "John Kohut and Hi§ Son Josef' by R. W. Cervenka. The book describes the trials and tribulations of an early Czech pioneer family in Texas — typical of the other stalwart Texans that came from Czechoslovakia. A community study of the Czechs may be found in "A History of West, Texsa, 18361920" by Henry M. Apperson. Unfortunately, too few family and community books about the Czechs in Texas exist. For a broader history of the Czechs in thp United States, one should read Thomas 6apek's book entitled "The Cechs (Bohemians) in America." The book, first published in 1920, is now available in a reprint edition. The volume gives an excellent account of the national, cultural, political, social, economic, and religious contributions of the Czechs in the United States. However, contributions of the Slovaks are not included in the volume.

Another informative book, "Czech' Contributions to the Growth of the United States," by Franktisek Dvornik was published in 1961. Dvornik presents a study of the Czech immigration and the resulting contributions to the growth and cultural expansion of their new Fatherland (the US). The book alsd contains some information about the Czechs in Texas. Still another recent publication is "The Czechs and Slovaks in America" by Joseph S. Roucek, which gives a brief account of Czechs and Slovaks in the United States. The book, especially appealing to the young reader, is interesting and will make any Czech American proud of the contributions of his ancestors to the diversity of the American culture.

America: "Glorious and Chaotic Land" is the title of yet another book about America written by Charles Sealsfield (alias Karel Postel). The author presents his travels and experiences as an early immigrant through-

out the United States, including Texas, in an interesting narrative that gives the reader an intimate knowledge of the early history of the United States from the ,viewpoint of a Czech writer.

Two books written in Czech also may be of particular interest to Czech Americans in Texas. The book entitled "Na.§.e Dejiny" (Our History) was published in 1939. Printed only in Czech, it provides a wealth of information about the Czech Catholic people and communities in Texas. For the Czech Americans who moved to Texas from Nebraska, the book "Deliny Cev Nebrasce" (History of the Czechs in Nebraska) by RtfZena Rosicka will be of particular interest. The book, also printed in Czech, was published in 1928 and presents a historical perspective into the many Czech communities in Nebraska.

Czech cultural contributions to the world, including the United States, are presented in a rather voluminous, but interesting volume, entitled "The Czechoslovak Contribution to World Culture edited by Miloslav Rechcigl, Jr. The book contains an interesting article on "The Czechs in Texas" written

by John M. Skrivanek of Texas' A and M University. Two previously mentioned historical works, "The Cechs (Bohemians) in America and "Czech Contributions to the Growth of the United States", also contain chapters on Czech cultural contributions in the United States. Two excellent culturally-oriented books have been published recently for the young reader. One of the books is "Children in Czechoslovakia" by Marcelo, Andrlova. With the aid of 150 photographs, the author, a Czech herself, draws from her personal experience to provide an absorbing, detailed account of games and holidays food and folklore, studies and sports, health care, and duties that make up the life of a Czechoslovakian child. The book provides a unique look at the generation that will shape the future of Czechoslovakia and should prove to be most interesting to any Czech American, young or old. A similar book is "Czechoslovakia in Pictures" by Alan Richman. The author of the book points out that Czechoslovakia, in spite of its turbulent history, has developed a rich culture and a mighty industrial capa-' city. In this book the reader will see, with the aid of more than 100 fascinating photographs, how the Czech and Slovaks live and work in a land of humming factories, neat farms,

18 soaring Gothic cathedrals, elegant Baroque palaces, and splendid mountains and forests. The book provides compact coverage of all aspects of Czechoslovakia, for student and tourist, as well as for the average reader who wants to learn more about a nation that is much in today's news.

In the area of literature, an interesting book for the adult reader in "Czech and Slovak Stories, which contains an excellent collection of twenty stories selected and translated by Jeannie W. Nemcova. The stories in the book have been chosen to convey the development of Czech and Slovak literature in the past century, and to show the emergence of a distinct national identity. Another interesting book is Petr Bezrue's "Silesian Songs".

The book contains a wide selection of translated poems written about . the region from which many of the ancestors of Czech Americans in Texas came. The young reader will find the book ''Favorite Fairy Tales Told in Czechoslovakia" by Virginia Haviland extremely enjoyable. It contains five fairy tales chosen as typical ones told to Czechoslovakian children. Illustrations in the book have admirably captured the spirit of the tales and the flavor of he Czech background. Other English translations of Czech and Slovak literature are increasingly being made available to the Czech American reader in the United States.

Many Impressions about the Czechs have been transferred to the United States through the vehicle of music, and Czech Americans should inform themselves about the many Czech contributions to music. A recent book by John Rublowsky entitled "Music in America" discusses the musical heritage of the United States. The author stresses the influence of the early Moravian settlers on the religious and secular son gs of America as well as the American influence on the music of Antonin Dvorak. Here is the full story of American music, including the Czech influences, in an interesting, easy-toread volume. Two biographic books of interest to the young as well as the adult reader are "Antonin Dvorak: Composer From Bohemia by Claire Lee Purdy and "Mozart: Music Magician"

by Clare Huchet Bishop, Purdy has written a fascinating and vital biography of Antonin Dvorak from his peasant boyhood in Bohemia to his place of great renown as one of the World's most gifted composers, Wolf-

More advanced reading abou the same two composers may be found in "Mozart The Dramatist: "A New View of Mozart, His Operas and His Age" by Brigid Brophy and "Dvorak: His Life and Times" by Gervase Hughes.

Czech immigrants contributed significantly to the religious cause in Texas and the United'States. Contributions were made by Czech Catholics as well as Czech Protestants. An interesting book entitled "Czech-American Catholics, 1850-1920" was writen by Joseph Cada to provide a source dealing with the founding of the Catholic church in the numerous Czech communities in the United States, The brief history is intended as reading for the general public as well as a source of information about the religious activities of the Czech Catholic immigrants. A more specific volume on the Czech Catholics in Texas, "Nage Dejiny," has been previously mentioned in the historical works, The Czech Protestant movement in the United States originated in 1735 when a small group of Moravians arrived in the Georgia colony to preach the gospel to the American Indians. For a definitive history of the Moravian Church, one should read the "History of the Moravian Church" by J. Taylor Hamilton and Kenneth G. Hamilton. The revised edition is comprehensive, objective, and eminently readable; it is certainly a valuable reference for one interested in the most complete history of the Moravian Church, including its activities in the United States. Another reference on the Moravian Church is "Through Five Hundred Years: A Popular History of the Moravian Church"

by Allen W. Schattschneider, a book that should be especially appealing to the young reader. Early Czech Protestants moving to Texas started their own religious denomination when settlers in a small community known as Veseli, now Wesley, in Washington County, officially organized the Wesley Brethren Church in 1864. The church became a member of the Union of the Bohemian-Moravian Brethren when it was organized in Texas in 1903. Today the religious denomination is known as The Unity of the Brethren.

Wednesday, September 2, 1970 in Texas will want to read a recently published hoc* entitled "Unity of the Brethren in Texas (1855-1966)". The historically-oriented book, compiled by a study committee of the Chri gtian Si6ters Union, gives a vivid description of the struggles encountered by the early Czech Protestant pioneers in establishing themselves as a religious denomination in Texas.

A true picture of the Czechs would not be presented if one failed to mention the culinary specialities of Czech cookery. The book entitled "Foods and Festivals of the Danube Lands" by Lila Perl devotes a section to Czech and Slovak folklore and recipes to share with Czech Americans, who have the good fortune to enjoy the culinary heritage of Czechoslovakia and other Danube lands. Another interesting book is "Memorial Book and Recipes" compiled by Mary Baca, a Czech immigrant to Texas, in order to raise funds for the Czech Catholic Home for the Aged. The book contains not only a wealth of Czech recipes, but also much information about and many photographs of early Czech pioneer families in Texas. Still another book of Czech recipes is "Bohemian- American Cook Book" by Marie Rosicka.

The book, also available in a Czech edition entitled "Oesko- Americka Kucharka", contains recipes translated directly from the original "Czech Cook Book" first published in the United States in 1909. Finally, the "Czech National Cook Book by M. L. Janciaeek, also available in a Czech edition entitled "Ceska Narodni Kucharka," another fine source of Czech recipes.

Tohoto letu se ZACastnilo pies 80 delnYch verejnYch pracovnikti dopravy, cestovinch kancelati. Behem tYclenniho pobytu v Kanade mela deskoslovenska delegace moZnost sejit se s fadou kana.dskYch vetejnYch cinitelu, kulturnich pracovnikti a, einitelt kanadSkeho cestovniho ruchu. Na obou stra-. na eh bylo videt snahu co nejvice prohloubit cestovni ruch a ptispet tak k ZAIIAJENt

dalSi spolupraci na tomto fiseku. Delegace z Ceskoslovenska mela behem .sveho tYdenniho pobytu moZnost sezuamit se nejen s vyspelym turistickYm ruchem, krasami Kanady, ale navic mela moinost rozhovoril se zastupci vetejneho Zivota v rtiznYch oblastech. DoSio k setkani s ptedstaviteli mest Montrealu, Ottawy, Toronta, Niagara Falls.

NaSe nejkrasnejk dojmy, ktere jsme si z Kanady piivezli, byly ze setkani s krajany v Montrealu a Torontu. Do pozdnich noenich hodin trvala 12. 5. beseda s krajany z Montrealu, eleny Slovenskeho p6dpUrneho spolku. Krajane projevili velky zajem o Zivot ve stare vlasti. Ve etvrtek dne 14. kvetna doSlo °pet k setkani s krajany z Toronta v jejich spolkove hale. &leastnila se jej delegate z Oeskoslovenska, ✓ ni2 byli primator hl. m. Prahy dr. L. Cerny, primator Bratislavy lug. L. Martinak, spravce Matice slovenske dr. J. Martak, zastupce, ptedsedy Cs. fistavu zahranieniho K. Oliva a dalZi. Tito, ✓ kratkem vYklade seznamili krajany, ktefi se dostavili v hojnem poetu, s vysledky budovani Ceskoslovenska za 25 let. Na besede vystoupil s programem Spevokol Slovenskeho podpfirneho spolku za vedeni J. DZatka, taneeni soubor Tatra Dancers za vedeni A. 8 evcove.

Ad do pozdnich hodin odpovidali jsme na dotazy krajanti, ktefi site Ziji daleko od sve vlasti, ale srdcem jsou stale mezi nami. Slovenskjr podptirny spolek za pfedsednictvi kr. FazekaZe a dal'Sich funkcionatti krajanskeho hnuti je zo.rukou, ze krajanska, vete y v Kanade bude jeSte dlouho Zit. V druZne bave jsme vzpominali na pobyty krajany u nas v C'eskoslovensku, hovorilo se o jejich einnosti mezi krajany, o potrebach krajanskeho, hnuti. Presrychle ubehla doba, kterou jsme • mohli vymezit pro naV gtevu mezi krajany, pii naSem programu v Kanade.

Shef ford zarazil sveho unaveneho kone a pomalu se rozhledl udivenjrm pohledem.

Asi tti mile dlouhY horskjr svah vejove barvy se pkevaloval a vzdouval dolti k Rudemu jezeru, suche, dervene kotline, obnalene a lesknouci se dutine uprostted pustiny, jeti tvotila opuStenou branu k nekonecnym divokYin a tozbrazdenjrm horskYm vygina,m, zdvihajicIm se v pozadi.

Shef ford byl cely den klu.sal namahave ypted, maje stale pied sebou rovnou dam horizontu; a nekolik dni jiti projiZdel divoke, puste roviny a stoupal do opUStenYch horskYch ixdoli. Venice barevne pteviaky a stupne vedly nekoneene nahoru a dole neznarnou a zradnou pustinou.

Sta mil, ktere byl urazil v pustine po vSech omylech, naudenich a zvla gtnostech jej neptipravily na to, co byl spattil. Dival se na svet, jent, jak se Mak lznal pouze ohromnost. Jeho zrak strnul udivenim a trZasem, a mytilenky se zastavily. A v zapeti temna a neznama zeme jej zahrnula vS rhrutikou. Neukojitelna touha jej pfivedla sem na tyto rozervane a hornate hranice Arizony, do Veto nehostinne, nebezpeene divoelny hor Utahu, jez se na neho mraCily, jakoby ho chtely varovati, aby nepatral potom, co leZelo za jejich htebeny.
