Premiums are calculated on an annual basis. Simply by paying each year's premium all at once, instead of monthly, quarterly or semi-annually, you can reduce the cost

WHEN YOU KNOW A FELLOW When you get to know a fellow, Know his jo ys and know his cares; When you come to understand him And the burden that he bears; When you've learned the fight he's making And the trouble in his way Then you find that he is different Than you thought hiM yesterday. You find his thoughts are sensible, And there's not so much to blame In the man you lightly jeered. at When you only knew his name, of your policy without affeeting your coverage. Splitting your annual premium into several se gments adds to the cost of administering your policy, so: the company has to add a service :charge. Besides the additional cost of sending out extra premium notices and collecting extra payments, there is a reduction in the investment income the company would receive if your entire annual preMium were available for investment over the full year. The income from investments helps to keep down the cost of life insurance. The extra charge on smaller payments varies among companies. Your company may charge a flat percentage of your yearly premium, a flat fee per policy, or a combination of both.

Since bookkeeping costs do not vary much with the size of a policy, the extra cost often runs relatively higher on smaller policies of smaller premiums. A policyholder who has difficulty meeting annual premiums may be able to arrange monthly payments more economically through a "pre-authorized check plan" —which authorizes his life company to collect the premiums directly from his bank. Many life companies offer this plan at about the same extra charge as semi-annual premiums (generally about 11/2 or 2 per cent more than annual premiums) or quarterly premiums (about 2 to 4 per cent extra). Otherwise, the extra charge for a monthly premium generally is about double that of the extra charge for quarterly premiums. Or, if a person has several different policies, he may be able to reduce his costs by paying premiums on each policy, while scheduling the payments to fall due at different times during the year. A person who is already paying his premiums annually can save money by making payments in advance. Life companies usually give a discount on advance premium deposits. (Th.e rnternal Revenue Service considers the discount as interest income winch must be reported at income tax time),
