FROM TIIE EDITOR'S DESK August 23 — This Coming Sunday All roads lead to El C'ampo to the high school auditorium. Will your road lead there? Let's give our youth the well-deserved and appreciated boost forward from us the adults. It is fitting here to note that quiet attendance is to be very much desired. Often there is too much talking and noise, causing interference and distraction from the program. Let us set an example; certainly it will be noticed by our youth.

We expect them to respect us — may we do the same for them? Certainly we can! a • We call your attention to the report from SL President Morris pertaining to the disbursement of the Youth Camp Fund in this issue.

• • Because of an overl y large amount of letters and cuts from two district YADs (I and VII), we will probably have to enlarge the English section this week so that we can get all the youth pictures in before the State YAD in El Campo this Sunday, August 23. There is a correction to be made to the editorial of last week's issue.

The statement that your editor attended all except District III's YAD is in error. We had planned to go to the District V YAD, however, that was the weekend of Mr. Stavinoha's (father-in-law) •funeral and we could not attend. To set the record straight, it should be: all except Districts III and V YADs. Texas AtlL1VI University is again offering Czech courses for the fall semester beginning August 31. Registration is from August 24-28. If you are planning to attend A&M, consider the possibility of taking one or more of these courses.

Opportunities are constantly developing in our SPJST Society and it is thrilling to report to you that they are culminating in real success. Here is a splendid version of Fraternity expressed in the following: What is real fraternity?

"It is a group of people who meet as faithful members and agree to meet again.

It is the close society that naturally appeals to those who set their standards by the highest of ideals.

"Whatever secrets they may have is no secret now; that striving for perfection is a portion of their vow.

"To honor our country, to serve our flag, protect the family and strive to be of service, each in his own community.

"A real fraternity is one of deep fraternal love that every man is justly proud to be a. member of."

It is said that "fraternalism is just a word until it is practiced." In the successful fruitation of all our goals, our aim to practice fraternalism to the utmost will be realized. Why not join the SPJST? Conformity has swept the country.

And while more and more people want to get seats in the grandstand, fewer and fewer want to sweat it out down

Wednesday, August 19, 1970 on the playing field. More and more youngsters who come in looking for jobs are asking, "What can you do for me?" rather than, "What can I do for you?" They want to discuss the extras they're going to get rather than thu extras they are going to give. They want to know how cool it is going to be in the summer and how warm in the winter. And how safe at all time;; of the year. And when they go to work, they hasten to hide their light in the security of a. committee, whero there is safety in numbers. The progress may be slow and the glory may be small, but the work is steady.

Their eyes are on the clock rather than the calendar. The coffee break is more important than the big breali!

Let's pull together! Lodges in which the membe'rs pull together will survive and grow in usefulness to the members and the community. Lodges in which they pull against each other will decrease in membership and usefulness and eventually cease to exist.

Lodges that pull together with other lodges in the district and Society will help build up and streftgther the Society as a whole. Let's have general cooperation for the good of the fraternity and the welfare of the membership and of humanity.

While outstanding good workers are found showing excellency in lodge work, a one-person lodge would be the same as a one or two-player football team, even though they be stars in efficiency. Ours, too, is a team where a lot of togetherness must be displayed. A lot of training goes into the making of a good strong lodge.

Too many lodges fold where team work is not employed. A one-person-operated lodge faces a tragic future and seldom enjoys good attendance.

Brother S. H. Ewell is confined to St. Jude Hospital in Brenham following a fall from a ladder at his home which rendered him unconscience and caused a slight concussion and a fracture of the skull. He is progressing satisfactorily, but will remain in the hospital a few more days.

Johnny Dokupil, Dorothy Pechal, Reporter 1,006E NO. 81, NEEDVILLE Dear Members, Our meeting of Lodge 81 convened at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 9. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited in unison after which all members stood in silent tribute to our departed sister, Albina Franek and Jeanette Young.

The minutes were read and, after a minor correction, were approved as read. A letter was read from the secretary of Lodge 25, Ennis, asking for hel p since their lodge hall was destroyed by fire. A motion was approved to send them $50.

The lodge books were audited July 27 and were found in order by the auditing committee.

Sister Kolaja, reported that Sister IVIarylee Kaluza is a patient in Galveston Hospital and has had surgery for the second time, on her leg. Bro. Jerry Blinka was scheduled to enter a hospital Sunday evening. Other members still on the sick list are Sisters Anna Matcek and Lydia Kocurek. We wish them all a speedy recovery.

A report on the cost of air-conditioning units and installation was given by Brother Leroy Kamas. He stated because of inadequate wiring and other problems the cost was more than anticipated. Total was given as $764.12.

It was advised that we install air vents for better and cheaper cooling.

A motion was approved to do so. Two more electrical out-lets will be installed near the kitchen.

Our Memorial Ffind was discussed.

4 There seems to be some confusion as to what kind of fund it is. After checking back in cur minutes when the fund was proposed, it is agreed it should be headed as Lodge No. 81 Memorial Fund, rather than s. p .J.s T. Rest Home No. 2 Fund.

A motion carried to purchase a turtle in support of the Reedville Lions Club.

With no other business, the refund checks were passed out. The door prize Went to Brother John Kalisek.

Our members were reminded to attend the State YAD in Fl Campo.

The Rules and Regulation Committee will meet the latter part of September. Please bring your recommendations if you have any to the September meeting.

Remember, August 21 is social night at the lodge hall.

The meeting adjourned at 4 p.m., followed by a covered-dish luncheon.

Fraternally, Helen Bryson, Reporter LODGE NO. 87, TEMPLE Dear Members, Our meeting was held August 9, at 2 p.m. Vice President Machalek held the meeting because our lodge president and his family were on vacation.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Frances Bartek. Financial Secy. Sister Labaj was also on vacation. The officers gave their reports and they were approved as read.

New members accepted into our lodge are: Diana Joe Chupik, Arthur Wayne Chupik, Kathy Rose Stavinoha, David Eugene Sosa, and John Stephen Sosa. Welcome to our lodge.

Sister Chervenka read a letter from President of the Board of Directors, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes J. M. Skrabanek concerning the opening of the Rest Home in Needville. Anyone wanting to make a donation please contact Bro. Skrabanek. A letter was also read from the TB Association stating they need help in folding and mailing seals.

Anyone from our lodge who can work is asked to give a few hours between now and October 30. It will be appreciated.

A letter was also read from the Ennis Lodge No. 25, stating that their lodge had burned and that they need all the help they can get to rebuild.

Our members voted to send a donation to this lodge for we all know how hard it is to get started. We need a

VESTNIK lot ef things for our lodge but we decided Lodge 25 needs it even worse. We hope our small donation will help in some way, and we all hope your new lodge home can be built soon.

E. D, Greener donated a swing set to our lodge; this was appreciated very much.

Judy Shenkir gave a report on the District II Camp. She said everyone had a gie!at tine.

President and Sister Bartek donated the door prizes. David Zatcpek drew the names for the prizes, and who won first? David Zatopek. Second was Sister Vlasta Jez. Little 7-year-old David, along with ins parents, Brother and Sister L. J. Zatopek, will donate the door prize next month.

Sister Chervenka gove out the premium refund checks. If you were not present to get yours, please check with Sister Chervenka.

Brother Zatopek gave a report on the insurance classes he has conducted.

Our next meeting will be September 13 at 2 p.m. After the meeting is adjourned a covered dish supper will be served. Each family is asked to bring enough food for their family and guests. We will put it all together and have a feast.

Don't forget our State YAD on August 23. Go to El Campo and support our youth!

LODGE NO. 172, PASADENA Dear Members, The August meeting was held on Tuesday, August 4. We had 34 members present.

At our dance on July 24, Mrs. Aloys Rutherford brought the most guests and was the $10 cash prize winner. At our last regular meeting Mrs. Rutherford donated the $10 to our lodge. For her thoughtfulness and fraternal attitude, we offer our thanks.

Five new members were initiated into our lodge and we hope they become active members immediately.

Sister Stewart and Sister Wilkerson had 17 youth present at their monthly youth meeting. They are making plans for the coining year.

At our dance on August 7, the youth club sold popcorn and gave all the proceeds to the lodge.

Wednesday, August 19, 1970 Our visitors for the evening were Brother Ernest Hanka. the district director, and Sister Evelyn Mikeska, the district organizer. Brother Hanka spoke briefly in place of Supreme Lodge.

Vice-President Joe B. Hejny. Sister Mikeska announced lice organizers' rneeting.

Our next dance will be held on Saturday, August 29 at 1302 Virginia St. (South Houston) from 9 p.m. until I a.m. Music will be furnished by Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen.

We will have keg beer, set-ups, sausage dogs, coffee and pastries. Make plans to attend our danCe on August 29.

Dear Members, The lodge had a nice meeting on August 10. President Tim Kostom called the meeting to order, and Flag Bearer Garry Zalesky presented the colors and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. The members stood in silent tribute to departed Sister Ellen Ogg and Brother Joe Wischn.ewsky. The secretary read the minutes, and these were approved after a correction was made. The secretary read the correspondence and the list of 92 applicants, 19 transfers and one social member, which were accepted by the lodge. President Kostom and Vice President Ernest Hanka initiated, the new members present.

Financial Secretary Ellen Gill gave her report and stated that we now have 6,793 members. District Organizer Evelyn Mikeska urged all to work hard toward reaching our quota and announced that the three top winners in the week-long contest preceding the organizers' banquet were: Louis Hanus, Helen Hegwood and Rita. Broz. She also announced that the lodge organizers would have a meeting on Monday, August 24.

Youth Leader Mina Murray reported on the social activities of the youth.

She announced that they would have Parents' Appreciation Night on August 21 for which the youth would prepare all the food. Mina urged all to go

V #1STNfit to the State YAD at El Campo on the 23rd. The juniors are collecting toys for retarded children and will appreciate any donations from you.

Good reports were given by E, J. Kadlecek for the Social Night, Weldon Hendrick for the Bar, H. J. Jarisch for the Blue Room, Abner Dixon for the Swim_ming Pool, and Board Chairman A. L. Hilsher. Speaking for the auditors, Milton Elolf recommended that the reports be accepted as given.

Doris Knapick reported for the Entertainment Committee and explained how they were going to start guest cards for attending the dam These are the good orchestras for the rest of August: Bluines on the 15th, Vrazels and Fabulous Six on the 16th, Lee Roy Matocha on the 22nd, and Joe Patek on the 29th.

Ernest Hanka recommended that we give some help to the hurricane victims, and it was decided that we leave it up to the board and that the members could donate clothes and groceries. He ur ged us to make donations to the Rest Home at Needville, the Sokol Athletic Building and to Lodge 25, Ennis, who had a disastrous fire.

Frank Tilich is one of the good Samaritans helping Corpus Christi with the telephone lines damaged by the hurricane. Fraternally yours, Tillie Helmcarnp, Secretary —SPJSTLODGE NO. 9, SNOOK Dear Members, District I Youth Activity Day was hosted by our Snook Lodge No. 9 Sunday, August 2, with a dance featuring music by Slim Ilaisler topping off the program. A record crowd filled the hall, and in spite of the unbearable heat, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Many prizes were awarded for the handicraft display, as well as for the talent and royalty competitions.

In behalf of the officers and members of Lodge No. 9, I would like to thank the district organizers, youth leaders, gueSt speakers, judges, kitchen workers, and everyone who participated in making the day a huge success. And last, but not least, I want to thank all of the SPJST youth for proving there are still many good kids in the world today.

Our monthly meeting was held, Saturday, August 8, preceded by a basket supper and our monthly social immediately followed the meeting. New business at the meeting included the forming of a committee to investigate the possibilities and costs for future air conditioning of the hall. Another committee was set up to determine the

best method of moving the switch box out of the beverage stand for security reasons. Members voted to have a mercury light installed on the yard in front of the hall. The next paint day is scheduled at 4 p.m., Wednesday, August 19, to be followed by a basket supper at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Mr. Elton Hubenak and. Mr. Ed Jakubik of RVOS were present to discuss RVOS's donation of meat for our October meeting. It was mentioned that Mr. Bennie Hejl of RVOS and Mrs. Walter Rubach from Snook have made personal monetary donations toward the paint for the hall. Mrs. Richard Vajdak also stated that our youth club has donated a set of pots for the kitchen in our hall. Our members appreciate very much all of these donations. With hard work by the members and the generosity of Lodge No. 9's friends, our lodge is fast becoming a place of which we may all be proud.

The next meeting is scheduled at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, September 6, at which time we hope to have all members present.

LODGE 35, ELK Dear Members, It is hard for me to realize that August is almost over. I suppose everybody is getting their children ready to start back to school. With time going so fast our District III fall meeting will be upon us before we realize it. It will be held on October 4 and hosted by Lodge 35, Elk. We will be looking forward to seeing all of you.

She presented the birthday cake which was baked by Margaret Thun. It was a very pretty cake. We know whoever is responsible for the disappearance of our youth and teen room decorative, as well as competitive, posters which made the two rooms reflect the personality of our youngsters,• will give us a hint where they are hidden. Gee whiz! those walls sure need them.

As summer draws to an end, fall is just arcund the corner, and you know what that means . . thoughts of the state fair and the Czech-American Day, of course.

This year the program will have many talented people performing from all directions in Texas, some being seen for the first time by the fair visitors. Even a dancing contest!

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE Dear Members: In this report, I will deal primarily with Youth Dept. matters, particularly with our Camp Fund disbursement for this year.

Wednesday, August 1.9, 1970 By the time you read this, all of our districts will have been at camp. All in all, from my own personal observation and reports made to me, I think the camps , were a big success. There are always a few wrinkles that still have to be ironed out. It must be said, however, that we get more complaints from adults than we do from the participating youths themselves.

I might inject, at this point, that the more objectively and impersonally a problem can be tackled, the easier it is to solve. Instead of saying 'I don't like the way you all are doing things," a more objective approach would be "We think we have a problem and maybe we can do somethitujibout it."

In other words, attack the problem, not an individital. Ask for help in solving our problem. Unfortunately, some people have never been aware of this approach, but if they were, it would sure make things a lot easier. Now, to our camp disbursement for 1970.

This year's camp fund brakedowa computation, and disbursement was covered in a detailed 'report to your DYDs on 11 June 1970. A lot of time and figuring was spent on it. The rank and file should know how this operates. This is the first year that we based our disbursement solely on computer returns from our computer service in Austin. You will recall we got them from them last year, but they were obviosuly way off; and so we used the previous year's figures. This year's figures were accurate because we double checked and proved them.

Here's how we arrived at this year's calculations: 1. The convention allowed the interest earned from m0,000 to be used for camp expenses.

2. The net interest earned in 1969 on our mortuary reserve investments was 4.86%. (This includes administrative costs, as specified in the convention).

3. 4.86% times $300,000 gives us the figure of $14,580, which is the amount we had to disburse for camping expenses for 1970 for all seven diStricts.

4. Our computer tells us we had 9,379 certificates held by members under 16 years of age as of December 31, 1969, in all districts.

5. To find the amount allowed (base) per child, we divided 9,379 into $14,589 and that gave us close to $1.55 per child.

6. We then had to count the certificates, lodge by lodge, district by district, which we cross-checked and

I hope all of you enjoyed camp and are already looking forward to going again next year. If there are improvements to be made, let's attack the problem — not individuals — and let's solve it together. Finally, remember that everything you do at camp, or anywhere among the public, for that matter, reflects upon you most of all, and secondly, upon the SPJST. Make sure the impression you leave is a favorable one.

LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX Dear Readers, District I held its YAD on August 2 at Lodge No. 9, Snook. Even though the weather was hot there was a very good attendance.

I am real proud of all the hard work and effort put forth by our youth club. Rita Kubena. won Junior of the Year and our teen group talent which included Pat Marek, Deborah Kubena, Marlene Horak, Rita Kubena, Don Bayer, Don Milburn, Wayne Iselt, Albin Horak, Jr., and Gary Iselt won with a skit entitled "Womanless Beauty Pageant." Deborah Kubena and Rita Kubena won first in individual talent.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Readers, Right now all of us at the lodge are getting ready for camp and when this letter is read, we will already be back.

I am looking forward to a very enjoyable three days and two nights at camp.

For our State YAD in El Campo, I have reserved two buses to take our

group. The bus will be at Lodge 88 at 8:30 a.m. and leave at 9 a.m. We have to be in El Campo by 10:30. The trip takes one hour and fifteen minutes. There is a rest room on the bus.

I do advise that you take a sweater for often, on the bus, it gets quite cool.

We can plan on having a lot of fun on the bus because Helen Hegwood and my husband, Frank Murray, plan to do a lot of singing. Once again, I wish the best of luck to all of District V's contestants. I hope we bring home a lot of first place winners. I believe we

15 again, I need to thank her and her husband, Frank. They were real nice and let the juniors and intermediates use their bay home at Bolivar en August 5. I know everyone who went had a nice day and I don't believe anyone got too sunburned. I hope they extend the invitation at anothe • time, for I know we would all enjoy going again next year.

This past Sunday night there . were 25 of the adults who worked with the youth who got' together for dinner at the Windswept Inn on Airlifie. We all had a nice fried chicken dinner with all the trimmings. I just hope they took all the calories out of the dumplings and dressing, because I ate my share plus a couple of others' shares.

I do appreciate having Mr. and Mrs. Tim Kostom, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hanka, and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hsnus as our guests. Mr. and Mrs. Hanka, we all enjoyed the refreshments you furnished. Thank you.

I would like to take just a moment and express my sincere appreciation to Mrs. Louise Knapick and Mrs. Virginia Wright for all the hours they have spent on Thursday mornings teaching the girls to sew. We plan to have a fashion show at our September monthly meeting of the adults. Do try to come and see what a wonderful job these two :ladies have done this summer!

On August 21, the youth club is gong to have Parent Appreciation Night.

The children will prepare the food and serve and clean up the dishes. (I think they will use paper Plates). The jun-

iors will prepare salads and bring the bread. The intermediates will prepare the vegetables and desserts. Teens, that leaves you to cook the meat dishes. I hope all of you will prepare a dish and have your parents come to a dinner that you have prepared just for them. Contact your youth leader and see if the dish you plan to prepare is all right. We would like for you to use recipes from the "Cook Book." We still have a lot of cook books for sale. They are $2.50 and they do have a lot of good home-tested recipes. If you know of anyone who would like to buy one contact me or any of the youth assistants.

This lady, Mrs. Louise Knapick, is really in the news in this letter. Once

I want to especially say thank you to Sister Mary Mikel for donating her services at Camp Val Verde. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend and your assistance was greatly appreciated.

The SPJST annual barbecue dinner was held Sunday. at the Sokol Hall with a large crowd. The food that was prepared by the ladies was delicious and most of all the barbecued chicken prepared by the barbecue crew with Brother Eric Moucka as head cook.

Immediately following the dining period, the youth club stole the afternoon. An exciting cake walk v as enjoyed by the group. Some rr: embers were so generous with their winnings that they turned right around end donated for additional earnings the club. Total for the cake walk was $24.45. A drawing was held and the Winners were Louis Mikel for the spe-

VPSTNIK cial prize and my assistant, Adell Valek, won the blender. Faithfully, she presented the blender back to the club and it was auctioned. The blender brought $86. In addition to the above totals, four cakes and the blender brought us $90.50.

I want to recognize the following for so generously helping the youth with their donations in the auction: Jodie Nekuza and Assocts., Brother Jack Hennig with HMI Electric, Brother Jerry Laznovsky, Brother Frank Laznovsky, and Truman Whitfil. Just a reminder: your interest keeps the youth moving and they appreciate your hard-earned money.

Also, at this tinie, I want to recognize my assistant, Adell Valek, who assisted me so patiently throughout the day. Again I say, it helps marvelously to have efficient help. The parents are so wonderful in their interest and team work. The youth club says thank you and wishes you the best of happiness.

A special drawing was held during the youth meeting. Winners were: Della Zhanel, Larry Valek and Linda Mikel.

The youth club did help the citizens of Corpus Christi in their latest disaster resulting from the hurricane.

Dear Members and Readers, I would like to congratulate all the first and second place winners from District Is YAD. All Of the youth did well with their craft and talent entries, but everyone can't win so everyone will have to try just a little harder next year.

Our club is looking forward to State YAD at El Campo on the 23rd of August.

On Wednesday, August 12, our club had a hamburger supper at the hall.

We grilled the hamburgers outside and set up tables outside. Everyone enjoyed eating out doors. We had invited the members of the "Renditions." (this is the band that plays for our club dances). We all went inside after we ate and danced for a while. All the

youth enjoy their music. Teddy Dusek, our club president is a member of this band.

School is just about to start, so our activities will be limited, but if there is something special you youth club members would like to do, I am sure we can find a date to have it.

Dear Members and Readers, Once again camp is over for another year and most of the chaperones and children are trying to catch up on their rest and sleep. Everything went over real well; we had a good attendance from the whole district. From Lodge 47, there were 49 youth who went to camp and 2 more came Friday night, so that would be a total of 51. We are happy so many of you came to camp and hope you enjoyed it and thanks for coming.

We were very happy that there were not any serious injuries and that, except for a few minor scratches, everyone returned home safely and I feel sure that everyone had a wonderful time. Thanks to the Supreme Lodge, Brother James Janousek, and Sister Jerlene Balusek for a job well done. A very special thanks to all of the cha perones who attended camp and all of you who took cars and carried us there and back; we certainly do appreciate this. We couldn't have made it without you.

Let us remember our junior swim social this Thursday, August 20. We will meet at Parkview Grocery at 6:15 p.m. and go to VA pool from there. At 8 p.m. we wil will go to Jackson Park for l homemade ice cream, sandwiches and cookies. We are counting on you parents to bring the ice cream and food and eat with us. The club will p ay for the swimming.

On Friday night, August 21, at 7:30 p.m. at our hall, we will have a giblet gravy supper for all Of our members and all of the workers who helped us at our picnic, so all of you people who helped, this is your invitation.

Please come to be with us and enjoy an evening of fellowship. If you wish, you may bring a dessert.

On Sunday, August 23, many of you will go to our State YAD at El Campo.

Wednesday, August 19, 1970 In my letter last week. I forgOt to mention the total amount of the donation we sent to the Ennis Youth Club. The youth club from Seaton is sending $40 to the Ennis Lodge No. 25 Youth Club and we hope this will replace part of their playground equipment until they can again raise some more money and get a new start.

Fraternally, Frank Klinkovsky, Youth Leader LODGE NO. 153, LA SALt1 Dear Readers, Our regular meeting date was changed so that our plans for this special day could be better fulfilled, and the meeting was held on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Much Of our discussion was on the loyalty of our members and their participation in YAD. The club members were recognized for aleir activity.

As soon as the meeting was over and everyone found a place to sit in the back of a pick-up, we were on our way. Our first stop was to the river bottom to enjoy our lunch. There were no idle moments because our time was taken up exploring.

Once the area was cleaned of litter and everyOne found a seat, we were on our way to fulfill other plans that we had made. Our first stop in the city was a visit to the Courthouse. We visited the sheriff and his department where we learned much about his work. Our club members were told of the methods that are used to apprehend people who are not law-abiding citizens. Club members were also fingerprinted.

Our next stop was at the county jail where we were explained the terms of various cells. We were given an opportunity to see some of the occupants behind the bars.

Continuing with our plans, we stopped at The Hereld office, home of our weekly newspaper. We were shown the various machines 'used to print a newspaper. We saw envelopes being printed.

Since it was a hot day, we were all looking forward to refreshments and that was our next stop. After relaxing a bit we continued on with our schedule. We visited the aged at the Senior Citizens home. Here the young and old enjoyed visiting and made plans to

On August 6, District Two SPJST summer camp started. We got to Camp Val Verde at 7 a. m.

Camp this year was a fun activity.

Swimming, horesback riding, archery, Arts and crafts. I enjoyed being with crafts.

On Thursday, everyone enjoyed the Hippie night, Friday night, Mr. Harley Berg of KWTX-TV, was the guest speaker. It was an exciting evening for everyone.

On Saturday night we had movie night. Sunday morning we had sunrise service, then breakfast and a seavanger hunt.

A big attraction was the visit by Mr. Harley Berg on Friday evening. He gave a very interesting talk on wildlife and how nature has a way of preserving animals. He showed three interesting films about trout fishing, rattlesnakes, and swamp rabbits.

Thanks to everyone who had a hand in planning camp for this year. I enjoyed working with craft again this year. Those of you who didn't come to camp, really missed a good time.

Thanks go out to the chaperones from our lodge, Bill and Rena Pitzer.

They worked real hard and I know they enjoyed every minute of it.

Thanks to Mrs. Betty Engbrock, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Pitzer, and Mrs. Rudolph Shenkir for providing transportation to camp.

LODGE NO. 66, %VACO Dear Readers, August 2nd the District HI Camp began at 2:30 p.m. Groups 1 and 2 went swimming while Mrs. Nesuda told all campers, 12 and over, they could be in groups 3, 4, and 5. That evening groups

17 3, 4, and 5 got to go swimming; then they had a dance.

August 3rd, a Monday, was our first full day. We had flag ceremony, breakfast, and then we left for morning activities. Our activities were horsemanship, swimming, crafts, nature study and archery. We had three activities in the morning, lunch, rest period and at 2 p.m. the first free choice.

Then at 3 p.m. the second free choice and then our next two activities. The evenings were filled with parties and dancing' for the teens.

Although some of this schedule was changed or rained out, thtt was mostly the schedule for August 3 and 4. August 5, our last day, everything was the same except we stopped everything at 4:15 to have our party.

Everyone left around 7:45 for home.

I hope everyone can be at camp next year to have fun and meet ueople.

LODGE NO. 135, ENNIS Dear Deaders, personally would like to thank all chaperones who went to camp this summer. They worked very hard this year to make this camp enjoyable and successful. All Of the chaperones did an excellent job. The idea of letting the teenagers plan entertainment was a very good idea. • The activities at camp were not boring like last year. I was always looking forward to report to all of my activities, and for sonic reason, I even enjoyed craft this year.

Maybe it was the funloving teacher!

At 2 p.m. we had our meeting. Almost everyone was present. We had a guest, Joey Hennig who was from Florida. It was a successful day and we all had a good time.

NO. 66, WACO Dear Friends, Well, camp is over for another year and I'm sorry to see it go because I had a ball. The swimming, horseback riding, crafts, and our evening partys were wonderful.

I want to thank everyone in the Supreme Lodge, Sister Wilma and Brother James, and anyone else who makes it possible for us to go to camp every summer. I also think its great of Sister Wilma and Brother James and all the leaders and chaperones who give up their time to be with us. This is a wonderful opportunity for any SPJST youth. You meet your brothers and sisters from other lodges in District III and really get to know them, and believe me they are wonderful.

This year, a group of teenagers from Robstown (District VII) were with us and they were great. Friends are real easy to make if you do your part and I made some real nice ones. If your didn't make it this year, I hope you will next year. I understand it might be longer. I sure hope so, because like I said, I had a bail and I believe everyone there did, even the leaders who were thrown in the pool.

LODGE NO. 9, SNOOK Dear Readers and Members, We had our monthly meeting on August 8. We also had a social and danced to the juke box. We were invited to a youth club dance by New Tabor on August 7. The music was played by the Renditions. I really enjoyed it.

District I had their YAD on August 2. In the royalty, Pat Marek was selected queen and Teddy Dusek, king.

Just like the saying: "Good things don't last forever." Oh well, there'll be _next summer to look forward to, I just came back from Camp Val Verde, and I had a blast! Everyone was just great. Every night we had a different social that turned out just great. Personally, I enjoyed the talent show the best. All the counselors and directors really must have worked hard to make camp a big success. I would especially like to thank the chaperones for helping out. They had just as much fun as the youth did.

There's one thing I know that everyone had when they got house — hot, tired feet. if know from experienc_el.

No matter how we felt when we got home, just as long as we ,enjoyed ourselves at camp is what really counts.

State YAD is drawing closer, as you all may know. It will be held on Sunday, August in the El Campo High School auditorium. It will begin around noon and will end around 4:30; earlier than last year, dice to Ahe opening of some schools the following day. On Sunday, August 10, the youth leader and her assistants of Lodge 88 had dinner at the Windswept inn on Airline.

LO GE NO. 153, LA SALLE Dear Readers, Last Wednesday, August sixth was quite an eventful day, which proved not only educational, but fun for the youth of Lodge No. 153, La Salle.

Wednesday, August 19, 1970 The day began with our August club meeting. at 10 that morning. Instead of having the meeting in the La Salle Recreation Hall, as usual, we all piled on benches outside, under a familiar concession spot, that partly blocked the sun's rays. Those faces that still remained in the sunlight didn't seem bothered by it though and it was great just to see the faces each missed. We had a brief meeting which included discussion on such topics as: Camp, the District Six Youth Achievement Day, and State Youth Achievement Day. Near the meeting's end, our youth leader, had a rather unusual way of bringing excitement to the crowd, because she casually stumbled upon a snake. She was promptly rescued, however, by our "hero" treasurer, Carol Williams.

Following the meeting, we all piled into two vehicles and motored to a picnic spot at the river bottom. Our next stop was at the County Courthouse. Here we visited our sheriff, Mr. Harvey Reynolds. He showed us various weapons, etc. and we were all fingerprinted. Mr. Reynolds' then took us on a tour of the County jail. Our next stop was the Edna Herald office (this is the county seat newspaper) for a tour and explanation on how the paper is printed. Our last stop for the day was at the Texanria Rest Home, where we visited and sang with the older people.

Before closing•, I would like to thank Mrs. Sembera, and Mrs. Raybon for a fun day -- it was very well -- prepared.

Dear Members, On August 2, District I had its YAD at Lodge 9, Snook. All six clubs were there and all had entries. I was glad our club won what it did. Teddy Dusek, our king won first place. Our junior group won first on its folk dance "Texas Star." Susan Trcalek won first in individual talent in the 10-12 group.

Donna Trcalek won first in individual talent in the 6-9 group. Our youth club won Youth Club of the Year honors.

Carol Trcalek was named Teenager of the Year.

I hope everyone does as well at state as they did at district. I hope to see everyone at El Campo on August 23.

Dear Readers, Everyone is back home safe and

19 sound after camp. All enjoyed it very much and had such a good time. I didn't get to make camp this year even though I was planning for it because of two weddings that I didn't want to miss. Talking about a full schedule, mine was.

Just a short reminder that you juniors are going swimming tomorrow night leaving Parkview at 6:15. After swimming you will then go to the park on the north side. :Ice cream and other goodies will be waiting. Hope all of you can go because if it's anything like the last time, yOu'll have a first class blast! All of you parents come out, you will have a bett gr time than the kids.

State YAD • is nearly upon us. This is one of the biggest things that can be bestowed on a SPJST youth member. You can learn so much at an event of this type. Meeting and getting to know youth members from other districts is just one of the pleasures a member receives. I must say there are a few I wouldn't mint meeting — girls (ha ha!). I wish that I could go but the circumstances won't permit me. All of you District II winners really make a show at state. I will be rooting for all of you.

My time is getting short, so I will end with this: The past is a dream, The present a strife, The future a mystery, And such is life.

LODGE 4, HALLETTSVILLE Dear Readers, Our Family Day was held last Sunday, August 9 at the American Legion Hall. A delicious stew dinner with all the trimmings was served to a nice crowd.

After the mother lodge held its meeting the youth club had their activities: a fish pond, cake walk, etc. Winnres of prizes were: 1st prize — Mr. Vernon Zak, 2nd prize — Mrs. Eisele Mascheck, 3rd prize — Kathy Zak and 4th prize — Mr. John Mascheck. Congratulations to all of them. The door prizewinners were : adults — Mr. John Holy and children's — Sharon Miculka. Our activities were a real turnout, thanks to all the people who helped us out.

At three o'clock our club held its meeting. Our roll call was answered

20 with our favorite sport. The winners of District YAD were recognized and a disaster donation was decided on. A hay ride and wiener roast were planned for Friday night, Aug. 14th.

Meeting place is at Vsetin education Building at 7 p. m.

Her daddy will have his vacation, so I know that we will all enjoy it.

LODGE NO. 160, SAN ANGELO Dear Readers, On August 10 we went on our camping trip to Buffalo Gap. We saw a lot of beautiful scenery on the way there.

When we arrived, we unpacked and got our rooms arranged. After that we had an assembly and the Pledge of Allegiance. Throughout the day we had other activities including hiking, swimming, indoor activities, scavenger hunt, and crafts. We really had a great time doing the crafts with TriChem.

On Tuesday, the following day, we went swimming again. All of the children were having a fun time in the pool. Later on that night we had a Hollywood-a-Go-Go dance. The seniors had a blast that night dancing and got to bed about one o'clock.

The next morning, after we all had breakfast, James Janousek took some pictures of the seniors standing around his car that had been wrapped.

Then he took pictures of the children who won Outstanding Camper awards.

Out of our lodge the children who won were Kathy and Peggy Simcik, and Alan Pelzel. Shirley Machalik won District Teenager of the Year, and Linda Pelzel won local Junior of the Year.

At about 8 o'clock that morning we left for home. The camp turned out to be a really successful trip.

We would like to thank the youth leaders who helped to make this camp a fun one.

I am sure everyone knows that we lost our lodge home in a fire. Our youth club is trying in every possible way to raise money in projects.

The youth club received a very generous amount of money from Lodge No. 47, Seaton Star Hall. We appreciate it very much We held our last meeting on Thursday, August 13.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 33, Bleiblerville, in behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, MRS. FRANCES SUSAN SCHOVAJSA, who passed away Monday, July 27, 1970 at the Bellville Hospital at the age of 89 years. Sister Schovajsa was born in Nelsonville on January 6. .1881. On January 8, 1901, she was united in marriage with Mr. Frank Schovajsa at Wesley. The couple resided on a farm in the Nelsonville community where they reared their family. She resided on the farm until about a year and a half ago when she moved to Bellville to make her home with her daughter and son-in-law, the Alvin Chaloupkas.

Active in church and social activities, Mrs. Schovajsa was a member of the SPJST, a member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church, the Christian Sisters and various other organizations.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 29 at 2 p.in. from the Nelsonville Brethren Church with Rev. Gordon Hejl officiating. Burial was

WedneSday, August 19, 1970 in the National Cemetery.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Alvin Chaloupka of Bellville; four sons, Frank Schovajsa of Nelsonville and Willie, Ben, and Lagdie Schovajsa, all of Bleiblerville; two sisters, Mrs. Frank F. Pilcik of East Bernard, and Mrs. Charles Schimara of Needville; one brother, Willie Susan of Bleiblerville; nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Raymond, Darvin, Herbert, and Billie Schovajsa; and Dalton and Willie Fick.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Schovajsa, in 1963; her parents; two daUghters; four brothers, and one grandson.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace.

We, the undersigned resolution committee of Lodge 25; Ennis, wish to express, in behalf of our membership, our c'eepest sympathy to the bereaved family of, MARIE HAKCOVEC, who passed away on July 3, 1970 at the Municipal Hospital at Ennis, Texas, at the age of 97. About a year ago, the officers of Lodge L5 and our district director delivered to her an endowment check on her certificate upon reaching the age of 06. She joined the SPJST in 1905.

Funeral services were held in the St. John's Catholic Church with the Msgr. James I. Tucek officiating. Interment was in the Crisp Cemetery beside her husband, Frank Haskovec, who preceded her in death by 50 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Frank G. Holubar and Mrs. William Nekuza, and one son, Frank Haskovec, all of the Ennis community.

Two daughters, Mrs. P. Mach, and Mrs. John Jurica and one son, Joe Haskovec preceded Sister Haskovec in death.

Sister Sabrsula was born in Yugoslavia on June 1, 1907 and had been a member of SPJST Lodge No. 58 since 1934. She held the position of president of this lodge for several years.

Sister Sahrsula is survived by her husband, Adolf, who at the present time, resides at the Fort Bend Nursing Home in Rosenberg; seven daughters Viola Kalina. of Boling, Pauline Kalina, Mary Ann Dorris, Clara Kutach of Wharton, Lillie Kalina, Theresa Howell of Rosenberg, Betty McClellan of Nashiville, Tenn; four sons, Anton of Rosenberg, Alfred of Wharton, Paul of Simonton, A. J. of Houston; 38 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Items of interest 17 PERSONS DROWNED IN TEXAS SO FAR THIS YEAR

Austin — With the 1970 outdoor recreation season still in its infancy, 17 persons have already drowned in Texas, most of them while engaging in water recreation oriented activities.

Nine of the 17 drownings were the result of boating accidents. Six of the boating • accidents started out as a fishing trip and ended in tragedy.

Eight of the victims were under 30 years old, and five were over 50.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department personnel, who compile statistics for drownings in the state, say they expect drownings to occur more frequently as outdoor activities increase.

Texas had 519 drownings in 1969, many of them the , result of carelessness during family outings.
