AUGUST 12, 1970

FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Be reminded that State YAD in craft, art, talent, Beseda, etc., is fast approaching — Sunday, August 23, in El Campo High School Auditorium. Let us support our youth and show them that we care! Sunday, August 2 we attended the seventh and last district YAD at Snook. The District I YAD was the last one for 1970. We wish to state that all seven YADs were much improved and greater than ever before, although some were more attended than others. The only one your editor did not get to attend was District III's YAD in Dallas, due to a conflict in dates. DY[ Lola Vavra of District I had a well-directed program. The youth were present in a large number, and although the weather was very sultry, the attendance of adults was large. Brother Janousek was available, as usual, for any questions arising and Sister Vavra kept the program moving smoothly. Here it is fitting to observe that Director John Kubena of District I, as did all of the other district directors in their YADs, was available and present so that all tabulating was fair and correct, and to give out the winners' checks. It certainly is a boost for the youth and adults to see their district director present. It also is so refreshing to see our

SUNSHINE AND MUSIC A laugh is just like sunshine, It freshens all the day, It tips the peak of life with light, And drives the clouds away; The soul grows glad that hears it, And feels its courage strong; A laugh is just sunshine For cheering folks along. A laugh is just like music, It lingers in the heart. And where its melody is heard, The ills of life depart; And happ y thoughts come crowding Its joyful notes to greet; A laugh is just like music For making living sweet. --Anonymous. youth displaying so much brotherhood and sportsmanship. In this era of unrest of the youth on the earth, esPecially in the U.S., the damage they do and lengths of unlawfulness they go to it certainly is worthy to note here that it gives your editor, and I am sure the Supreme Lodge officers, as well as the entire SPJST member, ship, a feeling of pride in the efforts of our youth. Yes, we give away quite a sum of money as awards, however, let us be seriously mindful of the good accomplished: girls learn cooking, - canning, sewing, etc., whereas the boys take up electronic study,

mechanics, woodworking, science, etc. Some youth excel in singing, acting, public speaking, etc. All of these will help them in their futures to make them better citizens and members. By all this they learn to respect each other, their elders and the SPJST more. It is up to us to also show them our respect. To add at this time, DYD Lola Vavra wrote asking that our presence would be appreciated because she had a surprise for us. Yours truly thought she meant a large attendance, which it was; however, speaking for the youth of DiStrict I, she presented yours truly with a surprise gift of a beautifully carved letter opener "in appraciation of your interest in our youth." A sincerely appreciated gift, Sister Vavra carved letter opener "in appreciation one. Thanks so much. Now why would an editor need a letter opener? Thanks again. Interest in our youth is a big part of my job — officially and personally.• The nation's life insurance protection at the end of 1969 amounted to $1,3 trillion, the largest on record and nearly 1 per cent ahead of the previous year. American families held an average of $11,500 of life insurance protection at the end of last year. That amount,
