FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK We were in attendance at the District V meeting in Houston, March 15 when Sister Wanda Elzner was elected DYD. That same day she had to rush off to LRL at Glen Rose even before the elections, to join the DYDs, and several local youth leaders, to learn how to be an instrumental and successful leader in her district.

Your editor has known her since she became active in the youth club of Lodge 88, and has participated at times in the Beseda with J. D. Elzner, Jr., her husband. They are blessed with three children.

Wanda has also been a successful local youth leader, and was admired dearly by the teenagers. She always displays good sportsmanship and makes the youth around her feel as if they were her own. With her congenial and enthusiastic personality there is no doubt that the youth in District V will continue to be even more active.

Let us all give her our full support in her district. Please refer to her letter in this issue.

March 22 we attended the District meeting in Bryan, which was hosted

by Lodge 39. The meeting was well attended by young and old. In fact every speaker complimented the youth and stated how glad they were to see so many children present.

33, and 39 performed several comical numbers and sang a number of songs, which were rewarded by loud applause.

DYD Lola Vavra and other youth leaders were pleased to see so many young smiling faces.

Sister Vavra was re-elected DYD, and Brother Joe Vytopil is the substitute youth director.

After all the business had been transacted the meeting adjourned and refreshments and sandwiches were served and a social hour followed.

• On our way home from Bryan we paid a visit to Lodge No. 24 Cyclone where we had been invited to their Easter Happening. When we arrived there was a good crowd in attendance.

It was an exciting event and enjoyable seeing Brothers Haisler, Klinkovsky, Spanhel, and Vanicek being good sports and competing with the youth. Brother Balusek was a good coach. Congratulations on their successful "Happening."

Our youngest member lodge — For some time you have been reading about our newest lodge in our Society, Lodge Friendship No. 174, Rockdale. A new lodge does not come into existence very easily and we wish to recognize the efforts of Brother Lad J. Zatopek, DO of District II, and organizers: Bro. Dan Kubiak (a State Representative), Bro. Ed Leshikar, and Bro. Lambert Skubal, Not only that, there is also a youth club organized!

The dedication is Sunday, April 19, so let's mark the date on the calendar

There is no special secret to success but every man who has ever been successful has formed the habit of doing things that failures refuse to do. Just think back about some of your best months and ask yourself: "Why were they my best months?" Invariably, you will come up with the answer that you worked harder than usual, and more effectively. In the insurance business there is no "good" season and nu "bad" season. We make our own seasons. So, when we have'a bad month of two, it's no one's fault but our own.

Someone once asked, Thu las Edison how he managed to do much in such a short time. He replied, "I wort: 18 hours a day and I sleep 6. During those 18 hours I concentrate on reaching some goal, while you, my frienC, have the same number of hours but do many disconnected and inconsequential things." How many of us are guilty of doing the inconsequential things!

Thinking ahead aid arranging a schedule will keep you on your toes, alert to opportunities and ready to handle the unexpected situations. Well formulated plans will encourage efforts and effort is bound to bring results. a a Your editor would like to emphasize: The date of this issue of our Vestnik, April 1, 1970, is the beginning of taking the census of our United States o' America.

There are many questions to be asked and especially important are: On page 6: 'Question 13 — Where was this person born?

Question 14 -- What country was his father born in?

What country was his Question 15 mother born in?

Question 17 ®- what language, other than English, was spoken in this person's home when he or she was a child?

If another, write Czech, or whatever other language was spoken.

Remember that all of these are very important that they are filled out correetly. That pertains to people of ALL ethnic groups --- Czech, German, Irish, Spanish, etc. It is in this way our government (federal and si ate), will be able to ascertain the percentages of each ethnic group comprising our United States. Our government is asking and expecting our assistance in this once-every-ten-years duty. It is

A special week of training was offered and available to all SPJST youth directors, leaders, and assistants representing district youth directors were: Lola Vavra (I), Jerlene Balusek (11), Wilma Nesuda (III), Mary Haisler (IV), Wanda Elzner (V), and Maxine Pavliska (VII). Youth leaders attending were: Frank Klinkovsky (47), Alma Ivicic (80), and Mary Schenburn (88).

Reports of this exciting and valuable week are in the Vestnik, as submitted by those attending. Pictures will follow later. The Supreme Lodge paid full mileage and tuition on all of the above members, except for Frank Klinkovsky, who was on a scholarship award, and Mary Schenburn, who was sent by the Supreme Lodge last year.

Pavliska Family Reunion The annual Pavliska reunion will be held Sunday, April 5, at Weld Hall.

Each family is asked to bring a basket lunch. The plates, knives, forks, cups, bread and drinks will be at the hall. There will be live music in the afternoon. We will start gathering at 10 a.m. and lunch will be spread at 12 noon.

Weid Han is on Highway 90 between Shiner and Hallettsville.

Let's all try to be present; let's keep this reunion going and growing.

Dr. Thos. N. DeLaney's wife, Sister Tony DeLaney, is resting at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Temple. She is recuperatin g from a severe bone fracture which occurred over a month ago.

VESTNtK We wish Sister DeLaney a speedy recovery o c Brother Henry W. Kainer, age 74, passed away March 3, 1970, in the Polly Ryon Hospital, Richmond, Texas.

He was interred in the Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at Rosenberg, and was a member of Lodge Svojan No. 11, Praha, Texas.

Sefcik Box 85 West, Texas 76091 Dear Brother Sefcik: This is a report on the meeting of the Houston Area Council of Foreign Languages held on the campus of the Dominican College, Houston, Texas, Saturday, March 14, 1970. You may want to print some of the report in your paper.

After the preliminary speeches and business meeting the organization broke up into section meetings according to the languages taught. Those educators interested in the Czech and Russian languages met together.

The program began with a discussion of oral translation between Russian and English, and discussions were carried on by professors Roger B. Anderson of Rice University, Andrew Jitkoff of Rice University, and Miss Elizabeth G. Toubin of Bellaire Senior High School, Houston.

Attention later turned to the study of the Czech language. Dr. John M. Skrivanek of Texas A&M University began the discussion with a statement on the large number of speakers of Czech in Texas and the need for action to restore the language to the schools in areas with concentrations of citizens of Czech extraction.

In the discussion that followed, several questions were put to Dr. Skrivanek by the participants as follows, with his answers: 'Question: Do you ever see a person, especially a student who is bilingual, for example, who speaks Czech and

3 English or Spanish and English well, who would be considered dumb?

Skrivanek: Quite the contrary.

Ability to handle one language seems to increase the ability to control the other, and under proper conditions increases a person's ability for abstract thinking. If you think you know of exceptions, 4 suggest that there is an explanation other than the doubling 01 languages.

IQueolion: Should Czech and Spanish be considered loreign languages in Texas?

Dr. Skrivanek: It is difficult to see how a language can be called *reign in an area where large numbVrs are born and raised in homes in which the language the primary means of communication. All Americans except Indians speak a language that originated somewhere far from the United States.

Question: In recent years we hear more use of such ethnic terms as "angle," etc. Should Texans of Czech extraction be included in the general term anglos?

Dr. Skrivanek: Certainly not. Let me point out that the English flag has never flown over Czechoslovakia nor over Texas. Anglo is a linguistic and cultural term. The language and culture of Czechoslovakia and of the Czech element in Texas have a great deal in common with Anglo-Saxon culture because they are both Western European.

The English language and culture, however, do not appear in the historical development of Czech language and culture until very recent years and only in the United States. No one in his right mind would call a Frenchman an Anglo and General Charles de Gaulle will support me on this — and there is even less reason to include the Czech people.

Question: What is the reaction of a Spanish surnamed person or a Czech surnamed person when he hears his name mispronounced by educated people?

Dr. Skrivanek: A person who has the need to pronounce your name also has the responsibility of learning to pronounce it cps the best way to preserve Czech language and culture in Texas?

Dr. Skrivanek: The best way is to take pride in the language, to speak it at every opportunity, and to encourage young people to learn and use it, to

4 ask that instruction in the language be included in the schools where there are a great many students of Czech extraction, and to support newspapers and organizations dedicated to their preservation.

Other members of the Section who participated in the discussion suggested that in each community 1) the school administration be approached directly with the suggestion that Czech he taught there 2) and that school teachers who have a knowledge of the language obtain enough college work to become certified teachers, and be ready to teach the language when asked. Some other members who attended the meeting were Dr. Jack A. Dobbs and Mr. J. 3. Skrivanek of Texas A8zM University, Mr. Robert Holick, principal of Giddings Junior High School, and Miss Sekerka of Houston.

The meeting ended at 1 p.m.

Wednesday, April 1, 1970 LODGE NO. 33, BLEIBLERVILLE Dear Members and Readers, Lodge No. 33 held their regular monthly meeting March 8 at 2 p.m. at the Bleiblerville SPJST Hall. Sister Lola Vavra, our district youth director, came to our meeting to help our youth start their youth club. It seemed to me that our youth are thrilled about a youth club. Our next meeting will be the second Sunday in April — the 12th — beginning at 1:30 p.m. and youth meeting following immediately after the adult meeting.

Our State Youth Director James J. Janousek and our District Youth Director Sister Lola Vavra are planning to be with us again on this Sunday.

There will be games for the children and the adults are planning on playing dominoes. We will also have refreshments, sandwiches, cakes, and coffee. For the children we will have an Easter egg hunt, so members of Lodge 33 come to the meeting and bring your children to participate in the youth club. Visitors are welcome.

Bro. Vernon Wood installed Bro. Albert Banik as local secretary of Lodge 35. He replaced Bro. Rudolph Zalman who resigned this office.

Bro. John Mach gave the treasurer's report. Sister Rosemarie Banik gave the youth club report.

Members having birthdays in March were: Ruby Pavelka, Craig Haney, Debbie Dulock, and Shirley Thun.

An Easter egg hunt and social was scheduled for March 22., in the afternoon. Members were asked to bring sandwiches and chips.

On the sick list were: Sister Mary Bartosh and Bro. Joe Kimball, Bro. and Sister Jerry Vicha were blessed with a baby girl on March 4.

Sister Ruby Pavelka was the winner of the door prize.

The April meeting date was moved up to the first Sunday, April 5.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Dear Members, I would like all members to know our regular meeting will be held one week earlier, April 5 at 2 p.m., due to conflicting activities.

All members are urged to atte -ea:, this Meeting:We are going to act on some possible by-laws changes. As all mem' bers know we have a Sick Benefit ByLaw standing. During the recent meetings some discussion was brought up concerning this by-law. Later there was a committee of three members appointed' to look into the matter. The committee reported some startling facts at -onr last meeting, i.e. the lodge has been losing $200 a year on sick benefis — during the last two years.

I have been informed that our lodge is the only lodge in the state having this benefit. There was a decision reached in our last meeting that we bring this issue to a vote in our April

In our last meeting, our president, Mrs. Minnie Bell Blakeley, was sick, so the meeting was called to order by our vice-president, Mrs. Millie Weuble. Minutes were read by our secretary, Mrs. Billie Spindor and approved as read. Mrs. Victoria Murphy reported that she bought stainless steel pans for the kitchen and showed them to the members for approYal. Birthdays in March were celebrated by Mmes. Inez Krivanek, Frances Dalton, Sunshine Easley, Anna Kubala, and Marie Prell. We sang "Happy Birthday" to them all.

Dear Members, Beautiful weather makes the difference because our meeting was well attended and the baseball diamond was too muddy for practice, giving several team members an opportunity to see President Sid Pokladnik, in behalf of the Supreme Lodge SPJST, present a check for $25 to the team, which was accepted by Bro. W. Jaska. The fellas are out to win another trophy and must have a sensational power house because it's rumored that the current players have challenged the "old timers") to a game! Oh, brother!

A moment of silence in memory of Sister Frances Steiner was observed by all members present. We extend sincere sympathy to the family and may our departed member have eternal rest.

Our 60th anniversary celebration was enjoyed by everyone and we wish to thank our youth leaders, who led our youth in a program, which depicted the accomplishments of our youngsters (state level) during the last ten years. Our appreciation to Sister Jerry Muehistein who helped prepare the script for part of the program.

Fraternally, Rose Scott, Reporter CZECH FEST OF NEW BRAUNFELS Dear Readers, Just around the corner is the 4th annual Czech-Fest in New Braunfels.

June 6-7 are the dates and this year it will be held in the beautiful Comal County Fairgrounds in New Braunfels.

Music will be funished Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. by the Hi-Toppers from New Braunfels and from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. by the Cloverleafs from New Braunfels.

Sunday, from 12 noon to 5 p.m., will be the Bay City Dutchmen from Corpus Christi and from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

During these times, entertainment wil l be provided in a separate hall. If any of you readers have Beseda dancers, Czech singing groups, or other Czech performers who would like to perform at the festival, please write Czech-Fest, c/o Edward J. Tell me your group's name, sponsor, address, city, phone number, type of performance and number of performers, duration of the performance, time and day you would be able to perform, and remuneration or donation usually associated with your performance. Publicity will be given to all performers in state and local papers.

The Czech-Fest was expanded to two days this year because of its great success last year. By moving to the fairgrounds, we will be able to provide more and better service and entertainment to all who come to view the Czech heritage we proudly display.

This year the Field Mass will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Fairgrounds Arena and Monsignor Drozd, our chaplain from St. Peter's and Paul's Church in New Braunfels is arranging the Mass and celebrants.

The food facilities are larger and there is quite a bit more room at the fairgrounds. There are, of course, shade trees and places to turn the kids loose without worrying about losing them or getting them hurt.

The dancing area is a tree shaded outdoor beer garden typ.e area with plenty of tables, dance area, and refreshment stands including a snack area for sausage, cheese, cold cuts, and

kolaches.

We are looking forward to seeing all of you in New Braunfels, June 6 and 7 for the fourth Czech-Fest. and those of you who wish to participate, please write me.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON On Sunday, April 12th, the Dramatic Club of Lodge 88 will present a three act musical comedy, "Music and Romance of the Backwoods." Qurtain time is 2:30 p. m. A goulash" dinner and supper will be served and we would like to ask the ladies of our lodge for pastry donations, which are always greatly appreciated.

Now a little more about the play.

The story deals with a little community and its people in the backwoods of Czechoslovakia. Their crude language and their mode of living rs a pleasing sight and sound to the city folk who come there to sell their wares, to lecture on cultural literature, and to gather material for their poems. The lively songs and dances and colorful costumes of these people make for a very interesting musical.

As you know, the actors are always at their best when there is a full house, so we hope to see a large crowd and also to see our good friends from the outlying towns around Houston.

Come and spend the day with us -- we know you will enjoy yourselves.

DRAMATIC CLUB "IlLATIOL" Dear Countrymen: I don't think I have to remind you that Houston has probably the only active Czech dramatic club in this part of the country. How many other minority organizations can be proud of such an activity? I am sure there are very few, or if there are any, they are a thing of the past.

Amateur Czech actors are a group of dedicated people who have lots of good will and enthusiasm to promote and keep alive the Czech language; for, as we well know, as long as the Czech language lives so will Czech customs. The Czech theater in Texas is something like an oasis in the desert where fellow countrymen come to-

8 gether to hear and enjoy their motherland tongue or that of their ancestors.

We are, therefore, asking you to join us actors in giving and showing your interest by attending our next theater production on Anril 12, at Lodge 88, Houston.

It was nice to see Mrs. Frank Krejci came out for a ride to the lodge. We were all glad to see her.

Brother and Sister Louis and Albina Kusy were involved in an automobile accident last Saturday while on the way to church. Mrs. Kusy has sustained neck and rib injuries while Mr. Kusy was hospitalized for a couple of days, but is at home now and doing fine.

We miss Brother Joe Fusig around the lodge. He has been in the hospital expecting to undergo surgery. Janet Rybak, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Rybak is also in the hospital. Brother William Young is back in th g Heights hospital for some more surgery. Our best wishe'S for a speedy recovery to all our sick members.

Shirley Kay Hilsher, daughter of Brother and Sister John Hilsher became the bride of Terry Donald Durossette, Sunday, March 22. Reception was held at the Chandelier Ballroom.

The Lakewood Church at 7423 East Houston Road was the scene of the wedding of Jacqulyn Ann Bell to Melvin Arthur Stayton. Melvin is the son of Brother and Sister A. J. and Marie Stayton. Congratulations and best wishes to these fine couples.

Maxine Holeman, daughter of Brother and Sister Billy Jack and Mildred Holeman has been selected by the Art Department of Sam Houston University to continue her studies at The Old Mission University in Pueblo, Mexico for the summer. She is very talented in the art field and we wish her the best of luck.

Two lodge youth clubs did not report for this quarter: Lodge 28 East Bernard (District 6), and Lodge 80, Holland (District 2).

This is one of the best reporting periods that we have had in the last two years. Several of our clubs are growing exceptionally fast, which is encouraging, as well as an incentive for the other clubs.

So far, 1970 has been exceptionally productive in the Youth Department.

Dear Readers: The time is drawing near and the end of this year's point contests is only weeks away. This summer, the awards will be more exciting than ever before, because one of the teenagers will receive a $250 scholarship. Will you be the one? Perhaps not this year, but there is always next year. To the juniors, there is no scholarship, but being active is habit-forming and you will continue to be active as you grow older, provided you work with your fellow youth clubbers to provide suitable activities. Only a few years ago, it wasn't too common to see youth clubs having an activity each month, aside from the meeting. Now it is very common over 90 per cent, in fact, have separate youth activities each month aside from the meeting.

Now is the last chance to have a fling at this year's district prizes. Perhaps you can be on top even though you are not there now. Beware, the contest isn't over and the final returns are not in.

New youth clubbers: push for that 1st 100-point mark so you can qualify for prizes. Many earn the 100 points in one month. You too can be on top!

Dear Readers, I don't know what happened to my letter I wrote from LRL, because it wasn't in the Vestnik today, but with all the rain and snow we had while there, probably the letter got washed down the Paluxy River. Since that letter got lost, or maybe went by way of New York, and got tied up in the mail strike, I shall write again.

First of all, a thank you to the SL officers and directors for making it possible for us to go to LRL again this year. We really enjoyed the week, and the opportunity to be able to take advantage of all the new ideas, crafts, and leadership techniques that were offered. Since I had gone last year, I wondered if there was much to be gained by going again, until I got up there, and from hearing the things brought out, I began to realize just how much I had been using the knowledge I had acquired from the previous year.

This year there were several new resource people there, who were just terrific, and they all gave us some very new and up-dated ideas. One was the Reverend Walter Koenig, Jr., from the St. John's Lutheran Church in Austin, who taught human relations. That must undoubtedly be a great asset to his church, especially in the youth department. When I came home and told my daughter some of the things he had done, and taught us, her reaction was: "Wow, he must really be cool." Another new resource person was Allen T. Smith from Kansas City, Mo., who led the Recreational Leadership Techniques, and games classes. He too, was a wonderful person and he gave us a world of new games, literature, skits and stunts,' and also helped us in so many ways toward being better leaders. So thanks again for a wonderful

week, and I certainly feel that everyone should have gained from this week of training, and the results should be very obvious in the future of SPJST, and their leaders.

Two youth leaders from District II went to LRL this year with us, Sister Alma Ivicic from Holland and Brother Frank Klinkovsky from de _ton. 1 hope they have both gained from this week's experience, too.

(Re-Easter Happening) The Easter Happening at Cyclone Lodge 24 was a huge success. Everyone had a ball, and also, we collected so many items for the rehabilitation center, that we almost had to have a truck to carry the things up there. This was all due to the combined efforts of three lodges — Cyclone, (the host lodge), Temple Lodge 87, and Seaton Lodge 47. Everyone was just great, and we had a great crowd. I would like to thank everyone who helped to make this event possible. First, Mrs. Molly Zavodny, her assistants, and Lodge 24 for their help and hosting the party. Second, Miss Judy Shenkir and her assistant from Temple, Ledge 87 for the help with the activities and refreshments. Third, Brother Frank Klinkovsky and his assistants, from Lodge 47 Seaton, for the help with the activities, and the games; Brother Wallace Bartek, our scorekeeper from Lodge 87, and last but not least, our great judges, who got raw egg alle over themselves: Brother and Sister Ben Zabelk, Sister Dorothy Morris, and Brother Bill Kosarek. And, of course, all you dear people who came out and participated with us and had a good time.

As you can see, no one can do anything like this alone, but what a great time we had, when we all got together in a group and had a formal get-together.

• I certainly hope, I haven't let anyone out of the above list, and if I have, p lease know that your help was greatly appreciated.

Sister Ben Zabcik baked two beautiful rabbit cakes and donated them to the Easter Happening, which were auctioned off, and brought $22, and -then the gracious buyers donated the cakes back to the crippled children. On Monday, Sister Zavodny and I went to the Crippled Children's Rehabilitation Center and gave the goodies to the children there, and as it turned out, they were planning an Easter egg hunt for that afternoon (March 24) and the director there was just thrilled to

have gotten these things, to help and make the children happy.

The spring district meeting will be held on April 12, at Lodge 47, Seaton. 'lime: 1:30 p.m. We will have special ;entertainment by the Young Loves from Granger, and each club will have a short part on the program (not to exceed 15 minutes). According to plans, you will perform in the order your club was established, beginning with the newest club first. Do you know your standing, as to the oldest club and the newest club? We will find out at the spring district meeting.

Re: First letter from LRL

Dear Readers, I just had to take out a few_ ,Minutes from our' busy schedule here at LRL and say, "Hello." We are all here having a wonderful time, and trying to absorb as much knowledge as our poor old brains are able to soak up.

On April 12th, at 1:30 p.m., we will have our annual spring district meeting', at Seaton Star Hall. I sincerely hope everyone will be there„, and each youth club will be there with a short skit or something to offer from their club as a p art of the youth program.

The time limit will be 15 minutes. The youth program will be the first thing on the agenda, so let's all participate and make it a good one. The order in which the clubs will perform will be according to the order that your club was organized, starting with the newest club first. When will you perform?

Do you know who you will follow?

Who is the newest club in our district? Who is the oldest club in our district? Well, this day we will firid out.

We will have an added treat this year. The Young Loves, from Granger have consented to come and entertain us. This group of young people are a wonderful singing group, and will -have some great songs for us, especially for the young people, so you won't want to miss this special added attraction either. We will all be looking forward to hearing the Young Loves.

There will be NO individual poster contest this year.

DISTRICT IV YOUTH DIRECTOR I have returned irom tne State Youth Directors' spring meeting and LRL. Pres. Morris presided at the state meeting in the absence of Bro. Janousek, who was confined to the hospital, but today I had a letter stating he was back at his work. We had a fine meeting, which you will be hearing more about at the district meeting, if not sooner. Youth, it is time to be thinking about the YAD contests which will be held at Rowena, April 26. Bro. Janousek has had the rules and regulations printed in the Vestnik on March 18, so be sure and read them carefully. Be sure and send me your entry blank before April 6, because I will not be able to add you at she district meeting. If you are not for sure you will attend, send your entry olank to me anyway, then no one will oe disappointed. I have to have my program all worked out, and know what our prize money will be, so we have enough money to give to every entry. It usually takes time to get all these entries separated into their categories, so please do send your entry to me be`ore the deadline.

We will go camping to Buffalo Gap, :sear Abilene. Dates are not confirmed yet, but it will be sometime in August.

To all the youth leaders Who didn't get to attend LRL training, you missed a lot. There were only two youth leaders who attended and they were both from District II. One of them told me they didn't have the least idea that so much was done at LRL. You are busy attending class, making craft or planping a night party. Each day was started with a 7:30 breakfast, then we vent to the recreation hall and had general assembly — song leading, and announcements. Then public relations, led by Rev. Walter W. Koenig. Each day he asked us to go into our groups and we did different personal group

Vt STNfK relations activities. Then came coffee break and next you had a choice of two workshops: Recreation Leadership Techniques, Party Planning and Phography. Then it was lunch time from 12 to 1 p.m., followed by folk game leadership, led by Obie Newcomb; a wonderful form of recreation for the very young, and those of other ages.

If you were on a night party you met at 2 p.m. to plan the party which consisted of Blast-Off, Four Seasons, Holiday on the Moon, Hippie Happening, Off Broadway Rated X, and Splash Down. All were a scream, planned with moderate decoration, and simple. From 3 to 5 p.m. was the choice of craft, nature study, homemade games, basket weaving, and clown make-up techniques. At 6 p.m. — supper; 7:30 or 8 — party; 9:30 — refreshments, and then social hour until 12. Usually, most of us older ones went to our cabin at 10:30 because we were tired. You would have to attend LRL to really see how wonderful it is. Words cannot express it. It is out of this world. This is my third year to go and I think I gained more knowledge on leadership and I am hoping I can spread it to all ten lodges in District 4. Only thing I can say about the weather is that it was miserable: wet and cold every day, but it did not hamper the labbers. Everything went on schedule, just as planned. I thank the Supreme Lodge for making it possible for me to attend LRL again.

Fraternally, Mrs. Mary Heisler, District IV DYD SPJSTDISTRICT V YOUTH DIRECTOR Dear Readers, This is a very special thanks to all of you for sending me to the Longhorn Recreational Laboratory. It was truly a week I will never forget and one that filled me with so much new knowledge I cannot wait to spread the new ideas to all my youth leaders.

Glen Rose, Texas is a small town northwest of Waco with very warm people in it. Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Ganz are the managers of Longhorn Lab, which consists of Austin stone bunk house, a recreation hail with a huge fireplace, a dining hall, lovely chapel, and craft building, pool, lake and impressive stone cross at the top of the hill.

We would rise and shine at 6 a.m., breakfast at 7:30 a.m., morning singsong around the fireplace at 8:30 a.m.,

Wednesday, April 1, 1970 then a very good human relation hour led by Rev. Walter Koenig of Austin At 10:30 we had a hour of planning party games. Lunch was then a rest break. If you forgot your name tag you paid 25c and wore a cow bell to the next meal. The afternoons were spent learning crafts, clown make-up, and photography. After the evening meal we would have some real wild parties closing with an impressive ceremony, then some singing and folk dancing. If you think you have two left feet, you should try a little square dancing of Obie Newcomb's.

The week consists of about 22 working hours and two fast Sleeping hours a day. I was bedded in with four other district directors. I not on1 enjoyed learning the personalities of the directors; I learned I have a lot to learn about a new job I've just received. I have to work hard to be tops like these girls (or ladies)!

I had great fun and learned that my job can be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life!

DISTRICT VII YOUTH DIRECTOR I have just returned from Longhorn Recreation Lab. How I wish you would have been able to take advantage of this Lab. Words can hardly express all that is derived from this week of work and fun. The relationship that is felt toward your fellow labbers is something that you do not expect to gain but cannot be missed. The members of SPJST who have met at LRL have learned to know each other in ways that you just do not experience by meeting two or three times a year at district and state meetings. Now when I meet these people, I will really feel that I know them.

Aside from getting to know each other, so much is gained in the knowledge of crafts, games, dances, songs, leadership, and human relations. Not only were we taught these things but we were shown ways of organizing groups and getting them to participate.

I hope that at our training class a lot of this can be passed on to you leaders, and I know it can, but do try harder next year to attend LRL, for A is impossible for you to learn in one day what was taught in a week at LRL. Please mail me a list of those who

Dear Readers, Our youth club held its annual Easter egg hunt on Sunday, March 22. We Were blessed with beautiful weather and all the youngsters had a fine time.

Our older boys staked off the hunting areas and helped hide the eggs, while the girls kept the smaller children occupied with games inside. The girls also prepared the lovely trays of :goodies and the large Easter basket, which we took to the nursing home afterwards. Thank you so much, guys and gals.

Thank you also to all the mothers who hel p ed and especially those who went to the nursing home with us.

We have also prepared a basket of groceries for a deserving needy family for Easter: Be sure to attend our meeting on April 5, at 3 p.m. We will be discussing our Polka Festival project. Also, if there is anyone who would like to donate any items which the youth club might sell at the festival (such as handwork), we could be persuaded to accept them.

Thanks again to all who have been helping our club. We really appreciate it.

Dear Readers, Spring is here again and I am sure everyone is excited about the , refreshing season, although lately it has been kinda hectic in Ennis, as far as the weather is concerned. Maybe the sunshine will scare the raindrops away for awhile. The youth can enjoy bicycle riding and various outdoor sports.

I have even considered joining the youth in our neighborhood_ Our Easter egg hunt was a lot of fun with an average crowd. The weather was a little cold which handicapped the attendance. -Youth through 8 years old hunted-eggs in the Sokol Hall and the older youth played games for the Easter eggs and prizes. joyed themselves just as well.

Our best decorated egg contest was quite interesting with the various ideas. Denise Patek won the prize for the best decorated egg. Her theme was Tom Jones and very true with his style of hair and clothing. Congratulations on your interest and hard work.

Be sure and make plans to attend our next meeting, April 5. Plans for the Polka Festival will be discussed. Summer projects will also be discussed. We need to vote on various items, so your attendance is necessary.

The District III spring meeting will be April 12 in Fort Worth. If at all possible, please attend. You can earn points by attending this meeting.

Fraternally, Patsy Slovak, Youth Leader LODGE NO. 47, SEATON l)car Readers and Friends: Today, I will write a little about the one week I spent at the Longhorn Recrecreation Lab. First, I must say it was great. You met people from different towns and even states who came to the lab , with the same purpose to learn recreational leadership and human relations. I think that personal contact with these people, and their problems, was quite an experience within itself.

We had instructors in singing, game planning, party planning, folk dancing, crafts and homemade games, also in leadership and human relations. Then we planned a party for each night followed by a ceremonial, which was always a sad part after each party to get everybody quiet. We had square dancing every night, after the ceremonials.

Oh yes! I forgot nature study, meetings, thoughts for the day, clown make-up, and a religious service Sunday evening; and probably several more things I cannot remember at present. We did not get to go on our hike up the mountain as it was a rainy and a cold week. In the craft department, we had homemade games and I made about six different games for our youth club. We made flowers with wire and plastic, also had liquid embroidery, decorated clothes hangers and made dolls froM cloth and tin cans. Oh yes! We had basket weaving and I made two bun baskets.

There was instruction there on photography but there just wasn't

enough time to do it all, so something had to be skipped.

During the week at each meal about 10 people-had to wait on tables and clean them up after each meal. We also had a cookout one evening.

I cannot describe the joy and the knowledge I received from this lab.

The kindness that was expressed by everyone, the joy through fellowship and by sharing our ideas made everything so interesting.

The camp site is the prettiest I have ever visited. It has a lake,, large swimming pool, rocks and mountains, a river flowing right next to the cabins; it gives you an emotional feeliv just to stay at a camp with so many beauties of nature. I would like to say that if anyone has a chance to go to LRL next year, plan on it and take this opportunity to learn about other people and their problems and what they do to help their youth and patients in hospitals, etc. Many of these people were from state hospitals from all over the state and they are leaders of recreational games for their patients. For me, it was a great experience and I am very hap p y I attended LRL. On Sunday, A p ril 5, at 2 p.m., we will have our monthly meeting. We will have our DYD at this meeting. I urge all of you to come out and enjoy yourself as we will have something a little different. Plan to be with us.

LODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOINiN Dear Readers, The members of the Robstown Youth Club had a busy and exciting month, with proMise of more ahead.

It started on March 7 with a second free bowling lesson at the Highway Nine Bowl for 43 members. After two hours of instruction and practice, the group decided to organize the Robstown Youth Club Bewling League. They will divide into iins and play each other the of each month. In Augt . cls party will be held for joining the lea gue„&nyone ,,sted in joining should contact me, good bowlers as well as beginners.

Our regular monthly meeting was

held on March 14, at the Recreation Center. An art contest was held for items made with liquid embroidery.

Judges were: Mrs. L. R. Smith and Mrs. Thomas Sullivan. Winners -were: 6-9 year group — Brent Hrncir, model car; 10-22 years Carolyn Griffin, peacock; 13-and-up — Connie Hrncir, peacock. The prizes were given by the club.

On March 21, the club had a skating party in Corpus Christi. A large - group of members and guests boarded the SPee-JeST and spent several hours of fun and "falls". Prizes were given to those who managed to stay up on both feet all afternoon, which was no easy lob, considering the crowded condition of the skating rink. !.hen on 1Viarch 22, the youth clubhers joined other members of Lodge 117 for the Faster picnic and egg bUnt. This year it was held at Welder Park just out of Sinton. A rigorous ba.seball game went on all afternoon and. the younger members enjo yed an e gg hunt. A picnic lunch followed, which was enjoyed by about 75 members and guests.

They also attended the Sinton Arts CY? fts Show held in the adminis. . 3 p. building of the park.

(-)1 March 29, at 5:15 a.m., members boarded the bus to attend the Easter sunrise services held at the Bayfront in Corpus Christi. Following the play enacted on a barge moored out in the Marina, the group had breakfast out

Wednesday, April 1, 1970 and returned to their homes in time for individual Easter services at their respective churches.

You can see what a busy month this was! We are all looking forward to the District VII spring meeting on April 12. RemeMber, if you would like to be on the youth program that afternoon, work up your number and tell the district youth director, that day, what you plan to do. We plan to take the bus from hobstown; we will leave my house at 10 a.m. and return after the youth program and cake walk, about 5 p.m. Any adults from our area who would like to ride with us are welcome. We hope to see many of our good friends there, as well attend a good meeting.

In our March meeting quite a few things were discussed, such as our Easter egg hunt. Those who found prize eggs were Julie Hand, Anna Thun, David Dulock, Joey Dulock, and Virginia Kubitza. We reall n enjoyed cur little outing. Our social aiterwards turned out nicely. I personally would like to see every fourth Sunday of the month be our social day. How about it?

By the way. I almost did not mention our kite-flying contest. Those who Entered really had a ball. Our judges were Lois Camp, a regular visitor in our lodge, and Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Schuetz, Ruth Krizan and Joe Sumbera, all four from Cottonwood Lodge 6.

Winners were: Oddest — Vernon Wood, III; Biggest — John Pechacek; Smallest — Steve Dulock, and Highest and Only Flying Kite — Randy Pavelka.

Our editor, Rudy Sefcik, was present.

He took several pictures and they were in the Vestnik and looked \Tory good.

Brother Sefcik intends to be at our April or May meeting. He then wants to take a picture of all our chairmen.

At our meeting we discussed quite a ew things.

We will have a party concerning Lodges No. 6 and 66. For the juniors there Will be games. The teenagers will have a dance and hoyride. Dips, Chips, and pops will be served. Chips and. Dips will be bought by the mothers. The youth club will furnish the rest.

At the April lodge meeting the youth club will hold a cake walk. You may bring cakes, pies, dishes or anything pertaining to that.

LODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOWN Dear Readers: On Palm Sunday the youth and adults of our lodge enjoyed an Easter picnic at the Rob and Bessie Welder Park. Some went in cars and the rest of us rode the youth club bus. At the park in Sinton, the group played tennis, baseball, and went hiking. Later the older youths hid Easter eggs and the "little people" had their fun finding them. Frances MacDonald and Pam Steiger were the girls who found the most eggs. Finding the most eggs for the boys were Ronnie Jones and Walter Gossage. Bonnie Janac found the prize egg.

The picnic lunch was spread and everyone enjoyed the delicious food.

On the way home, the bus stopped at

the main building of the park and the youth clubbers toured an Arts and Crafts show. Everyone hand a lot of fun at the picnic and considered the afternoon very well spent.

LODGE 87, TEMPLE On March 22, Cyclone, Seaton, and Temple held their Easter Happening at Lodge 24, Cyclone. I was glad to see so many of my friends and so many adults. This happening sure lived up to its name "happening." Well, just what is this so-called happening? This happening consisted of competitive game between the youth and adults. There were two groups to which the youth were divided into, and two groups which the adults were divided into. I must say the adults did put up a good fight, but of course, the youth won. I would like to thank Mrs. Balusek, the DYD, for thinking of the interesting and challenging games we played and a special thanks to Lodge 24 for being such a gracious host. I enjoyed myself and I'm sure everyone else did too.

ALFRED H. MANN Alfred H. Mann, 57, widely-known Charlotte farmer, died in a Jourdanton hospital after a two-day illness.

Funeral services were held from the Lange Funeral Home in Jourdanton.

The Rev. Winston Hold, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Churl:tilt, officiated and burial was in the Jourdanton City Cemetery.

Mr. Mann was born on Sept. 25, 1912, in Bee County, but he had lived in Atascosa County for the past 36 years.

Twenty-six of those years he had resided at Charlotte.

Mr. Mann was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and also SPJST Lodge Vesela Osada No. 147, Jourdonton.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Anna Marie Mann of Charlotte, whom he married on December 14, 1938, at Jourdanton; two sons, Robert Lynn Mann of Pearsall and Alfred Ray Mann of

Wednesday, April 1, 1970 Jourdanton and three grandchildren.

Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Clara Mann of McCoy, two brothers, Ed Mann of Jourdanton and Johnny Mann of McAllen, and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Woodlee of Pleasanton, Mrs. Ella Woodlee of McCoy and Mrs. Tillie Valchar of Jourdanton.

Arrangements were by the Langer Funeral Home.

Brother Upton was born October 20, 1902 in the Mart area. He had lived in the Mart and Elk area all of his life.

He attended school in Lone Oak. He was married to Johnnie Ruth Hadley on September 2, 1938 in Axtell. They had one daughter and one son. He retired from the McLennan County road maintenance force in 1969.

Brother Upton was a faithful member of Lodge 35 and also served as a trustee for our lodge. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Dare11 (Mary Louise) Robinson of Pasadena; one son, Kenneth Roy of Mart; three sisters, Mrs. Hattie Herndon of Axtell, Mrs. Tom Marley of Mart, Mrs. W. A. Jackson of Waco, and one grandson of Pasadena.

Items of Interest THE FAMILY LAWYER Is Suicide a Crime?

Once a minute, someone in the United States tries to take his own life.

Of those who try each year, more than 20,000 succeed. Have all of these people committed a crime?

Under English common law, suicide (literally, self-murder) was indeed a crime. It was punished by ignominous burial of the person's body and forfeiture of his property. Blackstone, the sage of the common law, explained it this way: "The suicide is guilty of a double offense: one spiritual, in invading the prerogative of the Almighty, rushing into his presence uncalled for; the other, against the King, who hath an interest in the preservation of all his subjects."

Following English precedent, a few of our states still consider suicide a crime — theoretically. But nowhere are penalties imposed, either against the person's body or against his property.

What about a suicide attempt that

18 fails? A larger number of states do classify attempted suicide as a crime.

However, it is seldom prosecuted, perhaps because of a feeling that punishment would serve no useful purpose.

Nevertheles,the law may deal sternly indeed with someone who actively helps a would-be suicide to take his own life. Consider this case: A despondent woman told her husband that she no longer cared to go on living. He brought her some poison and placed a quantity in her mouth.

She promptly gulped it down and, in short order, succumbed.

Brought to trial later on a charge of homicide, the husband. protested: "She herself wanted to die. All I did was let her carry out her own wishes."

Nevertheless, the court found him guilty as charged, since he had played an active role in bringing about his wife's death. The judge said society could not shut its eyes to the act of feeding someone poison, merely, because the victim gave her consent, A public service feature of the American Bar Association and the State Bar of Texas. By Ted Besting Many popular lure colors look totally unlike anything game fishes feed on, and yet -- they catch plenty of fish. Why? This is another of the reactions, and therefore worthy as a topic for discussion.

Let's examine one of the best alltimefish-catching patterns, a red head with a white body. Who ever saw a minnow, or food fish, so colored? No one Then why is this color combination so effective?

This corner's opinion, based on numerous underwater color studies, is --contrast. Red and white can be seen against any background. It has extreme visibility.

If you have a lure with red head and white body handy, get it and let's make a little experiment. Ask someone to take this lure and hold it in front of various colored backgrounds.

Notice how it stands out, even when held in front of matching colors.

Against a red background, the white body contrasts sharply, On a white background, the red catches your eye.

Now, try an all white lure against a white backdrop, or an all yellow lure against a yellow base. They're hard to see.

Then, things happen to colors under diminished, diffused light where the fish live.

Let's say we are standing on a black mud bottom in about ten feet of water. We are in what anglers call "good fishing water" because it's slightly unclear.

Let's take a look at our red-andwhite lure. At this depth, it no longer looks red and white. Instead, because of diminished light intensity, we see a blackish-red head and an off-white, or gray body. Held over that black bottom we can see the whitish body, but the head is lost. However, hold the lure overhead with the light sky as a background and the blackish head stands out, but the whitish body is barely visible.

What about other good fish-catching colors in lures? Okay, surely there are others so let's examine them. They are yellow, natural, natural scales, shad, white with various shadings, black and the metallics.

Of these colors, yellow unquestionably would be the most popular in all types of lures. Let's look at it in the fishes' realm.

Yellow is stark against most any color background. As the lure is moved farther away, it remains yellow almost as far as it is visible. Only during the last few feet of discernment does the yellow fade to whitish gray.

This does not mean yellow is visible farther than white. But, white loses its whiteness long before yellow loses its yellowness. Yellow as a recognizable color is more enduring than white.

This may be why yellow in various combinations is the most popular overall color in lures. It possesses extreme visibility and distant identity as a color.

The popular natural scales are subtle shadings over white, yellow, gray, pearlescent and other light base colors.

These are meant to duplicate the lifelike colorations of food fishes such as perch, shad and bluegills.

Usually, there are more effective than study colors in clear water because they more closely resemble the natural forage of game fishes.

The shad finish and the various white combinations are effective under the same circumstances. But, black seems to be a regional thing.

ALFALFA WEEVIL IN TEXAS Alfalfa producers should be alert to a potential outbreak of the alfalfa

Wednesday, April 1, 1970 weevil this spring, a Texas A&M entomologist has cautioned.

Recent field observations indicate that large numbers of alfalfa weevil larvae, Hypera postica, are present in spring growth of alfalfa in Wharton, Brazos, Burleson, Brazoria, and Fort Bend counties, according to L. Reed Green. assistant Extension survey entomologist.

The alfalfa weevil was first detected in Texas in Bowie, Red River, Fort Bend, and Lamar counties during April, 1968, Green said. Fourteen additional counties including Brazos, Burleson, Collin, Cooke, Dallas, Dentoi,21 Ellis, Fort Bend, Grayson, Hunt, Kaufman, Montague, Reckwall and Wharton were found to be infested during 1969, he continued.

"The rate of spread of the alfalfa weevil in other states has been from 50 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; 100 miles each year," Green said "Since little is known of the occurence of the insect in Texas, we feel it is very important to determine its distribution."

Speciments suspected of being the alfalfa weevil grub or adult, should be forwarded to Extension Entomology, Room 201 Biological Sciences Building, Tekas A&M University, College Station, Texas 77843, Green stressed.

"An alfalfa Held damaged by the weevil appears greenish-gray at first" Green said, "Damaged leaves dry rapidly and the field takes on a grayish to whitish cast."

Or4ce a field of alfalfa becomes infested with the alfalfa weevil, damage usually occeurs year after year, Green noted. A review of the control recommendations in those states having alfalfa weevil problems reveals that damage by this pest can be reduced by following recommended crop management practices and by applying insecticides, he continued.

"Although the alfalfa weevil prefers alfalfa, other states have shown that it may also feed on and damage other legumes," Green explained.

"They include in order of preference: ladino clover, white clover, red clover, crimson clover, lespedeza, vetch, soybeans and green beans.''

If an alfalfa producer suspects that his crop is infested, he should contact the local county agent for further information and for an alfalfa weevil distribution survey report form, Green said.

MUJ VtLET NA TENK LED Kdesi jsem eetl, k davne koruhovace kralft s ceremonialy a ptisluanYm divadiem. se konaly hlavne proto, aby probudily nemy dtas prosteho divaka. Ten se ptikl podivat a odchazel, diky nadhete kostYmil, aperkft a dvornich dam, pkesvedeen o nadpozemskosti sveho viadate. Nevim, zda je to pravda ale faktem zilstava, te tady nekde by se dala vypatrat kolebka s,howbyznisu.

Tato odnot umeni postupne zahrnula nejridnejai obory lidske dovednosti, obratnosti, opravdovero kumStu ale i podvodu a prohnansti. Vyrostla v mamuti obchodni artikl, v nand nalezly ,botivu tisice lidi, a stala se nikoli bezzyYznamnou polcdkou ye statnim rozpoetu zemi, ktere maji schopne lidi a dovedou obchodovat.
