FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK It will be wise for all of the members to start keeping the Bulletin Board contents in mind. The spring district meetings are all listed; the first being Sunday, March 15 in Houston. It is regrettable that some districts had to hold their meeting on coinciding Sundays, however, we must remember that each district has its own individual problems, i.e., the host lodge has only limited Sundays available and, also, each district has a problem of holding their meeting on dates when the largest number of the approximately 20 lodges can be repraented. For instance, we note we have three district meetings scheduled for April 12. It is very likely that this could not be helped.

On March 1, 1790 — 180 years ago — Congress passed the act providing for the first census. The states and territories, then comprising the Union had a total population (exclusive of Indians) of 3,929,214 — about half the present population of New York City. The most

In earlier times the population of the American colonies had only been estimated. When the Governor of New York in 1712 attempted to take a census, he met with opposition on Biblical grounds, and a few years later New Jersey's plan to take a census faced similar public resistance. The United States Constitution directs that a census be undertaken every ten years for the purpose of determining the representation of each state in the House of Representatives. Census data is used, of course, in many other important ways. According to the 1960 census the population of the United States was 179,323,175. It is expected that the 1970 census, to be

taken beginning April 1, will show a figure well over the 200 million mark.

If a new fraternal field representative were to ask me the requirements for being a good salesman, I would offer him the following advice: First, be humble. Nobody likes a smart aleck salesman. If you are humble, the person you are visiting will be congenial.

'Second, keep your conversation in plain language. Big words and technical terms impress no one, least of all the prospect you are visiting.

Third, show genuine interest in the welfare of the prospect and his family's security. Nothing falls flatter than a sales presentation in which it is obvious that the salesman is thinking primarily about the commission he will make if the prospect buys. This actually happened to me when I made a move one time and the representative of the company asked me to take out additional insurance. Upon asking him why I should, he replied: "If you don't take out additional insurance, I will not get anything for this trip."

Naturally, I took out additional insurance, however, it left a bad taste with me.

Fourth, be a good listener. Let the prospect talk about his problems, his plans, his objectives, etc. This information will be invaluable when it

Fifth, don't oversell. If you saddle a man with too big a premium, he will blame you when the certificate lapses.

Not only will you be unable i o sell him again, but he may be too soured en life insurance to invest in protection for his family again. It is better to undersell a prospect than overact! him . . . and the certificates you add on him and his faintly in the future may exceed your fondest expectations.

Sixth, give him service. Anyone can fill out an application, but the life underwriters who will continue to look after a policyholder's interests/are few and far between. Don't sell a man a "ten" and .then feel that you have done your duty toward him and his family. Stay abreast of their changing life insurance needs — additions to the family, promotions, educational needs, mortgage coverage, children's programs, retirement income, disability income, wife insurance, the widow's needs-if the husband die, prematurely, etc — and render them true and continuing service. o o When you talk about American economy these days, you'll have to start using' the word "trillion."

Early in the decade, probably in 1971, our gross national product (the nation's total output of goods and services) should pass the $1 trillion mark.

Written out the long way, that's $1,000;000,000,000 — with 12 zeros.

How big is a trillion? According to the Institute of Life Insuranee, if you started counting at the rate of one dollar p er second, and kept counting every minute of every hour of every day, it would take more than 32,150 years -- or nearly 450 average lifetimes — to reach $1 trillion.

Our GNP may reach $2 trillion by the end of the decade. And that will include well over $1 trillion in goods and services for consumers.

But not all of it will be real growth.

Part will be the rising cost of living, the most critical problem besetting the economy. In fact, GNP is )rally ;?;:rowMg very little, if at all. Yet, the dollar value of GNP may rise 4 to 5 per cent this year, mainly due to inflation.

Inflation on Wane? It government policies of economic restraint continue, some leading economists in the life insurance business believe that the rate of inflation may start to taper off

this year, but isn't likely to reach an acceptable level before next year.

The expected surge of new, young families in the 1970s underscore the urgency of controlling inflationary pressures. These families will generate much greater demand for food, clothing, housing, automobiles, medical services, mass transport, recreation, and many other products and services. Their rising needs could exacerbate our inflationary problems.

Many businesses will feel the impact of these young families. Their demands will provide the impetus for economic growth.

Can our economy grow fast enough to meet their demands?

Economic growth requires capital investment - money for new factories, offices, tools and equipment, transportation and many other sources of goods and services that consumers demand.

Investment capital is accumulated mainly through the savings of individuals and families. But young families do not tend to be savers. Their immediate needs often exceed their current income. They typically borrow against future earnings, rather than save toward future goals.

Face a Capital Shortage. With population gains in the 1970s centering on young people in their 20s and early 30s - we face a possib1e severe capital shortage and continuing "tight money" conditions in the decade ahead.

According to many economists, this situation may be eased because families are expected to channel more funds into life insurance, savings and other vehicles in the decade ahead. Although life insurance is primarily purchased to provide family protection, a natural by-product of this action is to generate capital.

Consumer demand (and inflationary pressure) focuses more and more on services, rather than goods. Economists predict that in 1970, for the first time, consumers will spend more on services (such as medical care, recreation, financial services and repairs) than on non-durable goods (other than housing).

Of course, the young adult of the 1970s will be producers as well as con-

sumers. The National Industrial Con-

ference Board estimates that they will increase the nation's manpower at the rate of 1.7 per cent a year during the 1970s - or one-third faster than manpower has grown during the entire postwar period.

Furthermore, they will bring more education, technical training, and greater skill to their jobs than any previous generation. With their higher competence, and increasingly sophisticated tools and equipment, they will undoubtedly spur a dramatic upswing in the general productivity of the nation.

Enid, Oklahoma -- Second Lieutenant Royce G. Crones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Crones of Nt. 2, Hallettsville, has been awarded U.S. Air Force silver

4 pilot wings upon graduation at Vance AFB, Okla.

Following specialized aircrew training at other bases, he will be assigned to Wurtsmith for flying duty on the KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refueling aircraft. He will serve with the 920th Air Refueling Squadron, a unit of the Strategic Air Command which is America's nuclear deterrent force of long range bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The lieutenant, a 1963 graduate of HallettSville High School, attended Victoria (Texas) College and received his B. D. degree in 1967 from the UniverSity of Texas. He was commissioned in 1968 upon completion of Officer training School at Lackland AFB. Mr. and Mrs. Grones attended the graduation ceremonies.

WASHINGTON - ON - TIIF 'BRAZOS Dedication Speech

Gov. Preston Smith called on Texans to wake a vigorous war against air and water pollution in the State during the recent ceremonial opening of the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park Museum. "we have tamed the wilderness, "Gov. Smith told a group of officials and visitors at the historic site Sunday, "but it is now time to tame ourselves."

The museum, located near the banks of the Brazos River, is operated by Blinn College and will be the center of a project to restore the village site as it was when the fathers of the Republic of Texas gathered there 134 years ago to draft a declaration of independence from Mexico.

The 71-acre tract in Washington County near Navasota is an official State park, but it is supported by the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park Association and is the site of annual Texas Independence Day celebrations.

This year's festivities attracted an estimated 38,000 person from throughout the State to view the parade and other ceremonies Sunday.

Gov. Smith said it is no reflection against the state's pioneers to note that the conquering of nature has led to problems. "Our senses of sight, hearing and smell make it clear that our 'victory' over nature was a temporary thing," the governor said.

VESTNIK "Today, the fruits of that all too successful battle — sadly enough — include polluted water, polluted air, congested cities, crowded highways, earsplitting riQiSe, disappearing scenic beauty, and crime in the streets."

He said it is time to ". . .fight a series of San Jacintos — this time for human existence. We have fought nature long enough. . . perhaps too long. It's time to try making friends."

"Just as the signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence cast off the chains of tyranny and separated themselves froM an unjust government, let us make Texas free again. . . free from the cancer of uncontrolled growth. . . free from foul air and spoiled waters. . . and free from the reckless destruction of natural resources.

"To restore this polluted land to some semblance of liveability will require the same attributes of courage and initiative and dedication that inspired the men of 1836, Gov. Smith said.

"It is to them this celebration and this monument are dedicated."

Dear Members, All members will please notice that our regular meeting has been changed from March 1, to March 15, at 2:30 p.m. at the City Recreation Center on 801 North 5th in Robstown, because of conflicting activities. All youth club members and their families are invited to attend this lodge meeting, especially the new members. We have set the date of the annual Easter hunt and picnic for Sunday, March 22, the time and place will be announced at the meeting on March 15, so those who are interested must come then to learn all the details. In addition, there are other subjects that need to be discussed. Agua Dulce, Lodge No. 152, has approved consolidation with us but there has been a delay in all the transactions, therefore, the secretary has not received any official notice yet.

After the meeting, there will be a social hour and we will have the usual refreshments. The ladies are asked to please bring something to eat, such as sandwiches, cakes, pies, kolaches or anything of your choice. I know we have good cooks here. We will have coffee as usual, thanks to Sister Mary Janak.

We always welcome guests, especially any members and their families of other lodges who would like to spend an enjoyable afternoon in a fraternal spirit, come and join us.

Remember, the meeting is changed to March 15, at 2:30 p.m. at the City Recreation Center.

I want to urge all the members of our lodge to come to welcome the Agua Dulce members , and the Agua Dulce members to come so we can meet you and get acquainted. Let's make this one of the biggest meetings ever.

Albuquerque, New Mexico Dear Vestnik Readers, A few lines from the "Land of Enchantment" a truly right name for New Mexico. Albuquerque is bordered on the west by the Rio Grande River and on the east by the mighty Sandias Mts. The climate is wonderful, there are very few days in the year that the sun doesn't shine, People

conic here from other states foe their health and also to retire, to enioy the climate and the sunshine.

I have been a Vestnik reader since I was a small girl; that is where I learning to read Czech. My mother and father were members of Lodge Pokrok Rowena, 49, Rowena, Texas, so the Vestnik found its way to our house, which was lucky for use since I love to read and I must say that I had many a laugh over the novel " gracmerka," that was printed long ago.

That is the first novel that I remember.

I became a member of Lodge Pukrok Rowena 49, on April 8, 1939. When I move to another address, the liestnik goes with me and I try to reathall the items and letters in both the English and Czech section. I read Josef Beaan's letters. When I was small I remember mother and father often talking of the Vaciav Becan family and among the photopraphs that my parents had there is one of the Becan family; the parents, three boys and two girls. If I remember correctly mottler used to say the youngest was Josef, maybe I am wrong?

I also read with interest the letters from A. Houdkova, when she writes about her travels, a person almost feels as if they are with her.

The letters about Indians, I read with interest, because here in New Mexico there are many tribes of Indians on their reservations. Many times we watch their ceremonial dances.

They dress in very colorful and beautiful traditional clothes for their dances.

The inter-tribal Indian ceremonial held in Gallup, New Mexico, each August is a dramatic reminder that all of our great continent was ones Indian land — Gallup is an appropriate place for the country's greatest allIndian convention for it can justifiably call itself the Indian capital of the United States. This New Mexico town is a gateway to a 16-million acre Navajo reservation and community center for several Pueblo and Hopi with the Apache and Ute reservation not far away.

This will be the 47th year that the ceremonial has brought together Indian participants from all over the United States, and Mexico and white Onlookers from every state and many foreign countries. For four days there are street parades, traditional dances

8 and the nation's largest collection of Indian arts and crafts.

The Indians are very friendly people, many are very skilled in arts and crafts that won nation-wide recognition. My sons have very good Indian friends of the Pueblo tribe. When the deer or elk season opens, they pack their camping equipment all together in pick-ups and off they go for several days of hunting. Not even when they were caught in a snow storm did that discourage them.

My sons and their wives were invited to an Indian friend daughter's wedding and they said it was very interesting. First the couple were married in the church, then at home they had their traditional ceremony in their own language, that lasted most of the day.

Three days before the wedding they started baking their special bread and pastry and that goes on until the wedding day, besides preparing other food, also. The wedding dinner was a feast.

The tables were loaded with food. You sit at one table for the main meal, then you move to another table for dessert. When they were getting ready to go home, each had to take a large paper bag filled with Indian bread and pastry and fruits. It is their custom and not to accept would be unfriendly.

My daughter-in-law's brother married an Indian maid of the Teas tribe; she is lovely. I met some of her family.

The older people who live on the reservation wear the colorful Indian dress with a lot of jewelry, but the younger generation wears the same type of clothes we do. They all are very friendly people. Although they were pushed back and given the poorest land for their reservations, that does not keep them from becoming lawyers, teachers, ,doctors, among the best.

Dear Members, Despite a very rainy day, a real good crowd was on hand for the regular SPJST Cottonwood Lodge No. 6, Mora ysti Bratri meeting, held at the hall on Sunday, March 1, at 3 p.m. Brother Arnold Kasberg, Jr., presided over the meeting.

We were honored to have several guests from Lodge 35, Elk, on hand at this meeting. They included Brother Henry Breitkreutz, president of that lodge; Brother Vernon Wood, District III President, and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Banik.

The Cottonwood youth led the pledge, after which Brother Kasberg asked everyone present to stand for a moment of silence for departed Sister Marian Mikeska who died in a Hillsboro hospital the last of February.

All reports were given and approved.

Sister Ruth Krizan reported on the activities of the youth club which included a Valentine party and a bowling party to Waco on the 13th and 22nd of February. A kite-flying contest was to have been held at this meeting, but the rain forced the many and beautifully designed kites to be placed on display in the hall where several judges were asked to pick the best ones fitting several categories.

Upcoming activities for the lodge include an Easter egg hunt and a social on Sunday, March 22 at 2 p.m. There will be a program and the hunt, after which supper will be served. The lodge will furnish the meat, but the sisters are asked to bring the vegetables, salads and desserts. The youth are asked to attend the work nights on Wednesday to get their Easter projects completed by the 22nd.

Sister Krizan reported two people on her sick list. They are Marie Plunkett and Henry Volpert, who have been under the weather lately. Everyone was glad to join Sister Krizan in wishing Vice-PreSident Albin Pavlas a happy birthday. He joined the Cottonwood Lodge when he was 18 years old, and he was 63, Sunday.

Brother Kasberg urged members to plant a tree around the lodge grounds in memory of a loved one.

Highlighting the afternoon was the initiation of the new members who joined within the past few months. The list included Ronald L., and Kathleen M. Dudik, Shelly Uptmore, Bonnie Pavlas, Patsy Kasberg, Lanette, Diane,

Wednesday, March 11, 1970 and Pamela Hykel, Tamrnie M. Mynar, and Sheri Hykel. Brother Rudy Sefcik, editor of the Vestnik, did the initiation. It was something that all present felt represented the close friendship prevailing. Two new members were also accepted into the lodge at this meeting, and more are expected to be added before the next initiation six months from now. The organizers donated the drinks for the new members.

Brother Vernon Wood officially installed the Lodge 6 officers for the new year. They include: President, Arnold Kasberg, Jr.; Vice-President, Albin Pavlas; Treasurer, Willie Helona; Secretary, Johnnie Krizan; Youth Evader, Willie Mae Schuetz; Financial % Secretary, George Straten, Jr.; Hall Chairman, John Mynar; and Flag Bearer and Reporter, Charles Conner.

The door prizes in the amounts of $10 and $6 were not won since the names drawn were Jerome Polansky and Antonia Gerik, and neither was there. Our next meeting will be Sunday April 5, at 3 p.m.

Anna Vrla's granddaughter, Paula Orsag, has recently won quite a few honors. She was in Dallas for a week, and played in the grand concert, doing a solo on the clarinet. She is a member of the ,All-State Symphony Orchestra.

Also she had just won competitive medals from the Houston Independent School District, and the University Interscholastic League. We are all very proud of you, Paula!

The junior and teen clubs of the lodge had a group of 150 who went to the rodeo in the Astrodome to see Elvis. Among those to battle the crowd of 40,858 were several Birthday Club Sisters. They were: Pearl Hanka, Mary Fusig, Itasca Cerny, Elsie Zalesky, Agnes Lesak, and myself.

February seemed to hold a lot of sickness for our members. Willie Mae Stang is in, the hospital and so was Estelle Kelly's grandson. Margaret Bohac was in a car accident. Della Kadlecek is hobbling around and doing much better, she was in the hospital, also. Many members were down with the flu and other illnesses. Here's wishing everyone a speedy recovery.

The March 1 meeting was held at 2 p.m. with President Johnie L. Vanicek presiding. The flags were brought in by youth club members, Ralph Kohutek and Brian Vanicek, who led the Pledge of Allegiance. Then the president requested all to stand for a moment of silence in respectful memory of our two departed members, Sister Hermina Pavelka and Brother Johnnie Lewis Hurta. Our deepest sympathy to these members' families, and may the departed members rest in peace.

The meeting was attended by 14 members and these sisters were' recognized as visitors: Frances Kohut, Albina Haisler, Annie Mikulastik, and Marie Kaulfus. The board minutes were read by Brother Clarence Sedek, secretary of the board of trustees. The board had endorsed a motion to appoint a nominating committee to start work, after, their appointment in the Apritl meeting.

The yard improvement was the next item to be discussed. President Vanicek explained that the engineers recommend that all of the trees from the front of the hall and along the east boundary be disposed of, to make way for perfect drainage for the parking area. This was voted on vid approved.

The extension of the front entry was discussed next. We voted to have the, original plaque placed on the outside wall of the new additien,. and the his= tory in the safety box be brought up-to-date since its contents are dated 1963. A lot of the improvements will be itemized and some picture& will brobably be added to the original and the history Updated to include the number of meMbers as of now, because we are steadily gaining new members.

Youth Leader Frankie Klinkovsky gave the youth report. The weather was not in favor of having the Easter, egg hunt that day so Brother Klinkovsky wanted the adults to decide on a new date. The juniors had scheduled a covered dish supper for Friday, March 13, so we decided the Easter

8 egg hunt could precede the supper, at 6:30 p.m., supper at 7 p.m., and the movies taken at Camp Val Verde last year will be shown after supper. In case of rainy weather, an alternate date is on Sunday, March 22 at 5 p.m., so that the members can then proceed to the Easter Happening at Flag Hall at 6:30 p.m. given by Sister Jerlene Balusek.

The program for the senior citizens of Bell County is set for the third Sunday, March 15, at 2:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Temple.

The choral group will sing, as well as some girls from the youth club who will perform.

The door prize was won by Albin 8bclek. The meeting was adjourned and the lunch following was enjoyed by all present. Thanks to the sisters for the excellent food. Till next time.

This Was their first appearance at the Chandelier Ballroom and we hope to have them back soon.

We were glad to have the Vrazel orchestra back at the ballroom. They are very popular in this area and we also hope to sec them back soon.

The princess ball scheduled for Sunday, April 19, is creating a lot of interest among the y outh here at Lodge 88. Randy and the Rockets of Brenham will provide the music for the event.

The youth members are selling advance dance tickets now, so plan to support the youth and buy your tickets early.

The spring session of District V's meeting is scheduled for Sunday, March 15. Meeting will start at 1:30 p.m. We would like to see as many as possible to come to this meeting.

NAMES IN THE NEWS: Wanda and J. D. Elzner attended a convention in Cleveland, Ohio, hoping to see snow, but they reported the weather was as warm as Houston's weather. After their return home they learned Cleveland had several inches of snow. Mildred Holeman attended the Legal Secretaries Board meeting in Texarkana.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The building of our new Supreme Lodge Headquarters building is progressmg satisfactorily and as you know in this beautiful building will be the first Czech museum, library and archives of the APJST of Texas. To make this a reality we will need your cooperation and assistance in this big undertaking, your advice will always be appreciated.

For the museum we will need all kinds of antiques for display, especially those that were used by our pioneers when they began to build our beautiful America. I know that there are many such antiques among us that the stored in old trunks, boxes, attics and other places that thousands of our young people would like to see, but for lack of some suitable space to display them they remain where they are. Now you will have an opportunity to donate them to the SPJST Museum where they will be displayed in cleanliness in a fireproof building for all time. Each such donation will have a card showing the name of the donor so that everyone will know who donated that item.

Please DO NOT ship anything here to Temple now, but send us a list of such items that you have and what you would be willing to donate to the museum, we will notify you later by letter or come for the items when we will be able to receive them. In this way we will save a lot of work and money. We will need all kinds of antiques that were used over 50 years or more ago, such as kitchen utensils, watchmakers, printers, photographic, blacksmith, carpenter tools, musical instruments and gramophones and records, small firearms, saddlery items, old mills, irons, washboards, lamps, butter-making equipment, canning equipment, beekeeping equipment, old sewing machines, cookware, glass, old smoking pipes, and equipment and many other items that were used by our pioneers in earning their daily bread more than 50 years ago. If it's old, please, let us know about it and we will let you know if we can use it or not. For such items as cultivators, plows, wagons, and buggies, we will not have enough room for their display, besides there are many such items displayed in many other places.

9 For the library we will need all kinds of books hi the Czech language and in the English language only such books that deal with Czech nationality or Czechoslovakia. If you have books that need repair we will repair them as needed. Send us a list of books that you would be willing to donate and we will advise you when to ship them or come for them when an opportunity presents itself.

For the archives we will need your lodges' histories with pictures, old lodge badges and other interesting antiqueS of your lodges.

If it's old or historical please let us know about it at your earliest elmvenience, so we can lay the fottndation to this big job ahead of us. Please DO NOT ship us anything until we advise you that we can receive it. In this way we will save a lot of work and money. I want to thank you in advance for any assistance you can give us and assure you that together we will build the kind of museum, JV brary and archives that4ve will look at with pride.

FROM THE LODGE YOUTH LEADERS LODGE NO. 47, SEATON

Dear Members and Friends, On Sunday, March 1, a rainy day, we held our regular meeting with good ' attendance. There were 59 youth members present and three visitors. Three 'new members joined our club and they are Craig Hanusch, Diana Arnold and ,,,Denise Arnold. We hope you will be active in our meetings and socials.

The Easter rabbit got rained, out so the children could not have their hunt.

It was rescheduled to be held on Friday, March 13, at 6:30 p.m., with, a covered dish supper for all at 7 p.m., and after supper a short movie film will be shown and some games will be played, ending at 10 p.m. This will ' be the junior social for March, so all of you juniors and pre-school children, wring your baskets and be with us for the Easter egg hunt.

On Thursday evening, March 12, the teens will go skating to the Skate:• Arama in Waco. They will meet at Parkview Grocery at 6:15 and plan to : leave at 6:30 pan. We will need a few more parents to come with us and furnish a 'car for this trip. If you plan to take a car, please notify Sister Kitty Sodek.

We were sorry to hear that Gordon Kohutek and Patsy Klusacek are on the sick list and wish them a speedy recovery.

On IVIarch 15, at 4 p.m., a few of our youth will perform for the senior citizens, which is at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Please note the time changes. I announced in our meeting it wouldstart at 2:30 p.m., which was in .error, the time is 4 p.m. Also, there will be many other entertainers from Bell County. There is no admission charge.

On March 15 through March 21, I will attend a leadership training class

at the Longhorn Recreation Laboratory at Glen Rose, Texas.

On Sunday, March 22, at 6:30 p.m.

Lodge 24 Flag Hall, there will be something happening called "Easter Happening." This is prepared by the DYD Jerlene Balusek, with the help of the local youth leaders. It is for Lodges 24, 47, and 87, so plan to be there and see what happens. Oh yes, this includes all the youth and adults. There is an admission charge of one Easter egg per person, which will later be donated to the crippled children.

At our meeting, I forgot to mention to the parents and the youth that we are suppose to present a short youth program at the District II meeting on April 12, which will be held at Seaton Star Hall. Dear Readers, On Sunday, March 1 and 2 in the afternoon, members of our club joined other volunteers of Jackson County in knocking on doors to seek contributions to aid the Heart Fund Deve. We are proud of., the efforts put forth by these youngsters. They gave up a Sunday afternoon when they could play, visit or maybe a movie to give of themselves, their time and energy so that the miracles of medicine can be furthered and lives saved.

The following youth turned out to collect funds: Gary Dwiggins, Diane Dyson, Keith Dyson, Sandy Dyson, Buzzy Dugan, John James, Sally Sembera, Marilyn Vincik, Carol Williams, and Debbie Williams. They worked Lolita, Vanderbuilt, Mobil Camp, and La Salle. A lot of foot work goes into these door to door drives. These youngsters worked hard for more than three hours and added $32.34 to the county drive total. We admire these young people for using their time wisely and we are grateful to them for their interest.

Our sincere thanks and .ippreciation to Mrs. Dwiggins for accompanying us and helping to provide part of the transportation.

LODGE NO. 169, BRENHAM

Dear Readers, The reorganization of our youth club here in Brenham has taken place, and at the present time we have 25 active members. After the initial reorganizational and orientation meeting, another combination party and meeting' was held in my apartment with installation of officers, games, appointments, and refreshments. It was decided at that time that the group would like to go to the Herman Park Zoo in Houston and although the definite date is not certain, the trip will probably take place Saturday, March 14. Each member will

Wednesday, March II, 19.70 take his or her sack lunch and drinks and transportation will both be provided for them. They may each bring a guest. The approximate leaving time will be at 10 a.m., Saturday morning and we are planning to be back home by 5 p.m.

Around March 20 or 21, there will be a "Hootnanny,"held on the front lawn of 705 Jackson if weather permits and two singers with guitars from Sealy will be doing the leading. After the entertainment, there will be a small talent contest with the two singers serving as judges. Prizes will be given. This will take place in the apartment and each member is asked to bring a pillow to sit on. All of the members are urged to attend both of these activities, the trip to the zoo and the party. More information will be available later so watch for it.

A guest speaker will be present at a meeting in the near future and she is a director of handicrafts in Austin.

She will explain to the members the art of the "brush stroke" and many other handicrafts and the members will then be able to try one of the crafts. Details will also be available very soon. A short business meeting will follow.

Dear Readers, We are gradually beginning to feel the reality of an ISPJST youth club in Lodge 20. With the great help and constant encouragement from our District Youth Leader, Mrs. Jerlene Balusek, I feel that we have taken a step forward.

Our first activity took place on Sunday afternoon, March 1, when the group went to Austin to attend a University of Texas presentation of the

VRSTN:f Dept. of Drama entitled "Urashima 'Taro". It was a beautiful and colorful version of an old Japanese fable. Our group was most impressed, and found the live play to be an enjoyable experience.

There were nineteen youths, which is the number that had signed up for membership, were in attendance. Also two adults, Mrs. Rita Marburger and Mrs. Norma Cavanaugh helped with the chaperone duties. In all there were 23 of us, and we were pleased with this first venture out as a youth club. May I commend our youth for their fine behavior and attention.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite all interested youths to come to our next meeting. Be listening and looking for the time and please come.

We have lots of plans for future activ-. ities that will be fun as well as rewarding.

Dear Readers, The Taiton youth club met for their monthly meeting on March 1, at the Talton Hall. Clarence Kahanek called the meeting to order. Anita Krpec led the pledge, and Judy Dluhos the prayer.

Special visitors were: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brdecka. Other visitors were: Mrs. Gerald Nohavitza, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Nohavitza, Mrs. Leon Krpec, Mrs. Mike Krpec. Jean, Janet, and Paul Kresta, and Debbie Nohavitza.

Mrs. Robert Kubala will replace Mrs. J. W. Krutilek as youth leader on June 1.

The District VI banquet will be held at Taiton on April 5. Madilyn Merta, Marian Dorotik, and Donna Srubar were appointed to the entertainment committee.

The nominating committee for the May election of officers are: Pat Kubala, Kenny Mrnustik, Marian Dorotik, and Madilyn Merta.

Entertainment for the District VI spring meeting on April 26 in La Salle was discussed.

Mrs. Frank Brdecka spoke to the youth. We enjoyed her visit to the club.

The meeting was adjourned. Door prizes were won by Larry Krpec, and Mary Jo Dluhos. Songs were sung and games played following the meeting.

Refreshments were served.

We will meet on March 6, at 2:30 p.m., to practice for our spring meeting at Bryan. Just a reminder to you about camp, which will be at Fort Parker State Park. I will be looking forward to going to a different place. I hope to see a lot of my friends there.

Dear Readers and Members, The Snook youth club held their monthly meeting March 1st, at 3:30 p.m. following the lodge meeting.

We discussed more about our chili slipper, which will be held Saturday, March 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. Youth club members, I want to remind you that Thursday, March 26, we will meet at the SPJ.ST Hall to straighten the hall and decorate the tables. Before we start to .work we will have a light supper. Those on the committee to bring food are: Sandwiches — Cynthia Kovar, Deborah and Debbie Sebesta; potato chips — Susan Sebesta and Sandra. Royder; pickles — James and Alton Hyvl. Cookies will be brought by those whose names are not mentioned above. Mrs. Vajdak will furnish us with drinks. Everyone try to come out. The money from this project will go to buying kitchen utensils for the hall.

We also discussed the district meeting which will be held on March 22.

We have camp this year at Fort Parker State Park. Last year we had camp at Bastrop State Park. We had fun at Bastrop, and I'm sure we will enjoy Fort Parker.

We have our district meeting on March 22. I hope to see all the youth there.

Fraternally, Rita Kubena (13) LODGE NO. 20, GRANGER Dear Youth Readers, The Granger SPJST youth club went to the University of Texas in Austin, on March 1. We saw "Urashima Taro" which was a combination of The Fisherman at the Sea and Urashima Taro.

Urashima Taro saved the life of an old turtle from four mischievous boys trying to kill it.

The beautiful sea princess heard about his kindness and wanted to thank Taro. She sent the turtle out to ask Taro to come to the sea.

Taro set out with the old turtle and underwater he found it to be most beautiful. After meeting the sea princess, he found out that the sea creatures' lives were in danger and he was asked to help kill the dangerous centipede. He did this and in reward was asked to spend the rest of his life in the sea palace. He refused because of lonesomeness for land and his family.

I found the story interesting and the movement and color most beautiful.

-----SPJSTLODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Readers, It has been a long time since I have written a letter to the Vestnik.

Lodge No. 47, Seaton Star Hall held its monthly meeting at 2 p.m. We had a good attendance. We were discussing a social for this month. The teens voted to go skating in Waco. We are to meet at Park View at 7:15, so we can leave at 7:30. The teens can bring friends. Our social will be on March 12.

The juniors were discussing their social, too. The juniors voted to have a covered dish supper. They want to invite the teens and all the parents. The

Wednesday, March 11, 1970 social will be held at Seaton Star Hall at 7:30. After we were finished discussing our social, the juniors came and listened to us. Ann Jakubec won the door prize in the teen's division.

The motion was made and seconded that the meeting would be adjourned.

The teens and juniors drank sodapop.

Then we had a suPper. We had sandwiches, sweets, and coffee. I would like to thank the ladies for bringing the food. It was delicious.

WILLIAM JOSEPH SKRIVANEK DIES IN WHARTON William Joseph Skrivanek, age 58, member of a pioneer Burleson County family and the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Skrivanek, Sr., of the Cook's Point Community, died unexpectedly in Wharton, Monday night, February 2, 1970. Mr. Skrivanek was attending a Wharton County teachers' meeting at Wharton County Junior College when he collapsed.

Mr. Skrivanek was born March 4, 1911, at Cook's Point. As a boy he was confirmed in the Moravian Brethren Church (Unity of the Brethren) at Cook's Point. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Blessing Brethren Church, which he attended regularly. He was a graduate of the Caldwell High School and the Sam Houston State University. All of his adult life was spent as a teacher and

Wednesday, March 11, 1970 administrator in Texas public schools.

Since 1936, Mr. Skrivanek lived in Wharton County and in El Campo. He never married and made his home with the Albert Bergstrom family. Mr. Bergstrom died several years ago, but Mr. ,.Skrivanek continued living with Mrs. Bergstrom until his passing. His hobby was hunting and breeding registered Red Poll cattle on his ranch.

Mr. Skrivanek is survived by six brothers, Joseph J. Skrivanek, Jr., of Caldwell; Dr. John M. Skrivanek of College Station; Frank J. Skrivanek of Rockdale; Dr. Ervin J. Skrivanek and Dr. Dan A. Skrivanek of Ennis; and Julius A. Skrivanek of Bryan. He is also survived by sixteen nieces and nephews; Mrs. Albert Bergstrom with whom he made his home for thirty-four years, and her daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Martin of El Campo.

Funeral services were held at a p.m.

Wednesday, February 4, in the BowersHarvey-Schiller Chapel, Caldwell, with the Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating.

The Caldwell Brethren Choir, Mrs. Beverly Mahlmann, organist, sang his favorite hymns. Interment was in New Tabor Cemetery where he was laid to rest by the side of his parents. Pallbearers were John David Skrivanek, Joseph J. Skrivanek, III, Thomas A. Skrivanek, Gary Skrivanek, Alvin Drgac, Wilton Marek, Henry Kana, and Johnny Schneider.

At the request of Supt. Wayne Jones, the entire Louise School System was dismissed February 4, in respect of "Mr. Bill" who had dedicated his life to teaching two generations of Wharton County citizens.

Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Damon with Rev. Kenneth Mikulik officiating. Interment was in the Guy Public Cemetery.

of interest CONGRESS CONSIDERS BILL TO ESTABLISH CENTERS FOR ETHNIC STUDIES /1 bill, presently before the Committee on Education and Labor in the House of Representatives, would authorize the U. S. Commissioner of Education to arrange for the establishment and operation of a number of centers for ethnic heritage studies. A chief purpose of these centers would be to develop curriculum materials which would enable children and young people in elementary and secondary schools to learn about their own cultural heritage and also about the cultures and contributions of other groups.

The bill (IIR 14910) was introduced in Congres8 by Rep. Roman C. Pucinski of Illinois and- is co--sponsored by 16 othet-. GongressMen from the states of California; Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, MasSachusetts, Michigan, souri; NeW York, and Pennsylvania.

In discussing the bill, Rep. Pucinski said that at present school history lessons teach young people about one or two countries and remain indifferent to the rest of the world. If the bill becomes law, he said, "our young people would be able to develop greater awareness and appreciation of the importance of all ethnic civilizations to our national heritage. Every one of the 51.5 million students in the primary grades and high school could study, in depth, about the ethnic culture of his own family and forefathers, and about their contributions to the American way of life. In addition, he could learn about many of the other readily identifiable ethnic groups in the country."

Whether the bill is enacted depends both on the attitude of the administration and on the amount of popular interest and support which it develops.

The American Council for Nationalities Services is one of the organizations which has voted to support the bill.

ACCENT ON HEALTH Statistics may seem like a bore to a lot of people, but to the Texas State Department of Health its Records and Statistics Section is an active — and very necessary _ part of its services to the people of Texas and a tool to plan and evaluate health programs.

The Bureau of Vital Statistics is the one p lace for storing the vast numbers of' records of Texas births, deaths, marriages, divorces, adoptions and other matters.

In the old days the fact that you were on the earth and breathing was enough to satisfy any inquiry about your birth. Most schools required a birth certificate for children entering the first grade. A birth certificate is the best proof of citizenship for your passport. You may need it to satisfy military requirements, to satify the Internal Revenue as to your dependents, to satisfy Veterans Administration or other claims against the government, or to apply for Social Security.

The big three today, according to W. D. Carroll, chief of the Records and Statistics Section and state registrar,

15 are schools, passports and Social Security.

Last fall more than a quarter-million children entered school for the first time, and more needed a certified copy of his or her birth certificate. These were obtained in the counties or cities of birth, or from the Austin office of the State Health Department for a $1.50 fee.

The records on file of births, deaths, and fetal deaths come in from some 1,000 registrars throughout the state.

In many cases the registrar is the city or county health officer. Each of the 254 counties of Texas has one , ifr more local registrars. In rural areas 'it might be a justice of the peace. In towns of 2,500 or more it may be the city secretary, city clerk or some other person designated as the city registrar.

In some counties the county clerk is the registrar. In larger health departments in Texas, the person in charge of vital statistics normally is the registrar.

Reports of marriages are forwarded into the central office at Austin by the county clerks of each county. Divorces and adoptions come from the district clerks. The reporting network fans out into every nook and cranny of the state.

Just having records on file isn't enough. They must be indexed and stored with easy access in order to be useful; therefore, the records are placed on microfilm and now are being placed on magnetic tape for adaption to computer references and recall.

As an example of the numbers involved, by the end of 1970 total vital records on file will reach the 17 mil-. lion mark. Last year more than half a million current records went into the files — deaths, fetal deaths, births, marriages and divorces. p

FISHING GUIDES AVAILABLE Austin — The 1969-70 Texas Fishing Guide is now available from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department district and regional field offices and license deputies across the state.

The guide is a digest of regulations for the sport fisherman in any of the fresh or salt waters of the state.

License requirements; fresh water regulations; laws in the different counties; lake laws; regulation , govering the sale of fish; rules for possession, transportation and sale of minnows; saltwater regulations; rules for

importation, possession or sale of tropical fish and rules in regard to protected species are covered in the guide.

This year's format has been simplified to make for easier use.

31 DEADLINE FOR BOAT RENEWALS

Boat owners have until March 31 to renew their boat registrations, according to George Cook, director of Water Safety Services for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Cook says the last of the renewal notices were mailed to boat owners February 23.

Boat owners with registered boats who failed to get a renewal notice should write Water Safety Services, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, John H. Regan State Office Building, Austin, Texas 78701.

New boats may be registered at any of the department's district or regional offices where they will be assigned a certificate of number.

RAINBOW TROUT GO TO GUADALUPE

New Braunfels — The Guadalupe River below Canyon Dam will be the stocking site of 6,000 rainbow trout weighing approximately 1/2 pound each on February 25.

The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service will furnish the fish from their New Mexico hatchery, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will do the stocking . This is the third shipment of trout added by the Federal Government.

Lone Star Brewery started the project in 1966, and between the spring of 1966 and the sp ring of 1968 added some 32.000 rainbow trout to the Guadalupe River.

This year's fish have one fin clipped to distinguish them from former stockings. Three-hundred of the fish are also marked with anchor tags. Fishermen catching a tagged trout are asked to return the tag to one of the area's commercial establishments and fill out data cards available there.

The trucks from the Inks National Fish Hatchery near Burnett where the trout were reared will arrive at 12 p.m.

The fish will be stocked at all points of public access areas immediately below the dam.

The Parks and Wildlife Department suggests fishermen going after the

trout use small spinners, worms or canned, whole kernel corn.

TRAP 44 PRAIRIE CHICKENS BIOLOGISTS

Victoria — For the next 90 days or so, an Attwater's prairie chicken will be checking its corning-and-going with concerned biologists of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. . The bird is one of 27 released this month in Victoria County, but it is special because it is wearing a harnessed radio transmitter to help researchers track the flock in their new habitat.

Of the 44 prairie chickens taken from a colony at Ellington Air Force Base near Houston, 17 others were airlifted to Texas A&M University where Dr. C. R. Creger of the Department of Poultry Science is also studying the endangered species.

While there are huntable numbers of greater and lesser prairie chickens on the American Prairieland, the Attwater's variety (greater) totals only a few thousand in scattered and isolated flocks along the Texas coastal prairies. One such flock of 50 to 60 has been thriving on the grass areas surrounding the air strips at Ellington.

As they multiplied, the birds had become an increasing hazard to jet aircraft using the base.

In a joint effort to help rebuild the Attwater's populations, the U. S. Bureau of :Sport Fisheries and Wildlife sent a helicopter and pilot Joe Perroux to help department biologists trap as many as possible. As they had first done two years earlier, the team attached a hoop-like net to the front of the aircraft and used it like a giant flyswatter to pin down the chickens.

Project leader Bill Brownlee termed the second six-day chase a success.

"All the birds seemed to be in good shape when released," he said. "All but three flew off, and those apparently had onl y minor trouble with their wings." The bird wearing the miniature transistorized radio was airborne some 50 yards before landing and disapnearing.

Methods other than the unique pursuit by helicopter had proven virtually ineffective as well as sometimes harmful to the birds. But the Ellington project this time resulted in fatal injuries to only two prairie chickens,

V E S TNIN. which were also taken to Texas A&M for study.

Good weather prevailed. "There was only one morning and one evening when the wind got too high for the helicopter to operate," said Brownlee.

And the time of year was right. The prairie chicken cocks were at the peak of a traditional ritual they had begun some two months earlier, that is, sounding the resonant "booming" from the skin sacs on their throats to establish territorial rights prior to mating time.

Thus, they were obvious as well as arrogant, and more vulnerable to netting.

Final count was 27 males and 17 females. Biologist Dennis Brown said tne team is hoping that this interruption of their booming season will not prevent the little flock from increasing its numbers this year while also adapting to the new homeland.

A dozen or less were left at Ellingten, simply because they were too few to pursue. If they continue to multiply amid all that air traffic, however, they may someday again supply more stock for a determined effort to save the Attwater's prairie chicken.

—SPJST-- — DEPARTMENT BEGINS PARK ACQUISITION

Sales contracts for the acquisition of 350 acres of land adjacent to Fort Richardson State Historical Park at Jacksboro have been approved by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

The additioal land is being considered for a new entryway to the park directly from U. S. Hwy. 281 as well as for future recreational facilities.

Total -cost for the land acquisition has been set at 146,575. The 61st Legislature authorized funds for such recreational development during the cure rent fiscal year; half of the funds for the three tracts involved are available through the U. S. Bureau of Outdoor Recreation.

Largest of the three sites is 283.5 acres on the southern border of the State park. A residence built of native rock approximately 100 years ago is included on a second tract of 43.22 acres immediately west of the present park. A third tract of 23.9 acres is east of and ajacent to the largest tract.

Fort Richardson made Texas frontier history a century ago with such men as the Mackenzie Raiders. The old hospital building on the present

1,7 historical park site is now undergoing restoration and will house exhibits and furnishings relating to life at the fort during 1866-1878.

The remains of some original buildings and an officers' quarters built of cottonwood are also located on the existing park property. sr,/ ST—

"I'll take care of her," he announced. and gave her a heard shOve. The little girl fell over; broke her arm, and later — through her parents — fitd a damage suit against Jeff. Despite the boy's tender years, the court rendered a sizable judgment against hint. It may seem strange to saddle a youngster with such an obligation, but it is no longer rare for a child to be collectible. Perhaps he has money of his own.

Perhaps his family has a liability insurance policy that includes coverage for him. Or perhaps the claimant will keep the judgment hanging over the child's head for years, until he grows older and begins to earn wages.

In any event, in the eyes of the law. mere youthfulness alone does not ordinarily prevent liability. Most courts feel that since the loss must fall upon someone, and since parents often cannot be held responsible, it is fairer to let the loss fall upOn the guilty child than upon his Innocent victim.

NeverthelesS, youthfulness may indeed be a defense if the circumstances show a lack of wilful purpose. For example: A four-year-old boy wrapped his arms around the legs of a woman visitor, causing her to topple over and suffer injuries. But in a court hearing that followed, the evidence showed that the hug was a gesture of pure affection. Thereupon the court ruled in the child's favor, because even though his act was intentional, it was not meant to do any harm.

Nor is a child likely to be held liable if the bodily contact is not intentional at all, but simply part of the

18 normal, playful exuberance of childhood.

Thus, in another case a schoolboy was held not liable when he accidentally collided with another pupil while playing tag. The court said: We should not wish to make it necessary for children to stand about the schoolyard with folded hands for -fear they might negliEently brush against one of their fellows, and become liable for heavy damages."

EXPLODING SOFT-DRINK BOTTLES Exploding soft-drink bottles have become a common hazard to families and delivery men ever since no-return bottles hit the market. One mother reported that a second after her young son closed the refrigerator door, a soft-drink bottle exploded inside, burying fragments of glass in cheese, vegetables, meat and everything else not protected by metal or glass.

Bottling companies blame the lack of strength in no-return bottles.

"We've reduced carbonation as far as we can to take the internal pressure down," reports one manager.

The injuries caused yearly puts the glass bottle at the head of the list of 263 houSehold products under jurisdiction of the National Commission of Product Safety, reports Doris Myers, Extension home management specialist at Texas University.

Accidental injuries from exploding soft-drink bottles total about 150,000 a year, aecording to the specialist. A recent insurance survey showed that bottles outnumbered the next greatest hazard, power mowers, by more than three to one.

HUNTING ACCIDENTS KILL 24 IN 1969 Hunting accidents killed 24 persons in Texas during 1969, according to . reports from game management officers for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

In 92 hunting accidents reported, 142 persons were involved, of which er injured two victims with one shot. were 16 years of age or younger.

Rifles were involved in 48 of the accidents, shotguns in 34, and handguns in 10, Self-inflicted wounds accounted for 40 of the 92 accidents.

No accidents were reported among archery hunter's.

By comparison, 170 persons were involved in 106 accidents, 37 of them fa-
