• • There will be an eclipse of the sun March 7, we hear. We also hear that it Is definitely recommended that no one should look directly at the eclipse, through anything. The best way to watch it is through a pin hole in a piece of cardboard held above another cardboard and watch the image on the lower piece of cardboard. The upper one can be adjusted for height. Remember, the retina of the eye is not sensitive to pain and can be damaged very easily by the rays of the sun. Take care of your eyesight!

The weekend of February 14 and 15 w,:‘, received the sad news of the death of Rev Ladislav Elimicek (known rather widely as Father Lad). We knew him well and held a very personal resr ect for him for the way he was always friendly to all and to our SPJST Whenever possible, he always attended

The clay will be a friendly one, and then at night you'll find That you were happy all day long through friendly thoughts in mind. the Czech plays at Lodge 88 in Houston. He was a friend to everyone and although his occupation was that of a clergyman, he always found time to help the Czech people's cause whenever possible. The small community of

Frydek and surrounding territory has lost a very good person. He is to be honored and respected along with his sisters, with whom he took such loving care of "maminka," their mother, to the last when she preceded him in death in 1969. His mother had been a member of Lodge Komensky No. 20 in Granger. His kind and devoted heart, after previous heart attacks, finally could not repel the last one which took his life.

He was an associate pastor here in West; where he has many friends, for some time before going to Frydek about 1945.

The nation again demonstrated solid progresss in retirement planning during 1969, as coverage under insured pension and other annuity plans with life insurance companies registered another record growth year.

The Institute of Life Insurance estimates that employers, workers and others contributed about $3.4 billion to these plans during the year. Compared with 1968, that would be a rise of 14 per cent or more than $400 million. the largest dollar increase in contributions during a single year.

Benefit payments under these programs also rose sharply. 'flie life companies paid out nearly $1.6 billion dun ing 1969 — or a record $159 million gain or 11 per cent over payments in 1968.

All the above figures include annuity plans that individuals set up privately to guarantee future income.

More than 9.1 million acti' e and retired workers throughout the nation were covered by insured p:‘i-1;ion with life companies at the beginning of 1969. While a reliable e.,tiniate of the workers added to these plans during the year is not yet available, the number covered by year-end probably approached 10 million and may even have topped this historic figure.

Newsbriefs Supreme Lodge President Bro. Nick A. Morris will be the principal speaker at the 20th anniversary celebration of RVOS Lodge No. 112 in Dallas on March 1. The celebration will take place in the WBFA Lodge Hall on South Central Expressway (Hwy 75, South) in Dallas.

Brother Morris is also scheduled to address a meeting of the La Grange Rotary Club in that city on March 11 in the Cottonwood Inn He will also address the Lion's Club in La Grange on March 24.

Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Bro. Ben Zabcik has returned to his duties after a week-long bout with revere bronchial congestion and a virus.

• • The new EPJST lodge at Rockdale (Friendship No. 174), will be formally initiated and dedicated and given its charter on Sunday, April 19, 1970. Details later.

• • Dr. Vacla y Hunacek and his group of assistants will hold a one-day workshop in the Rogers Public Schools on Wednesday, March 4. That evening, a program and reception in the East Bell County area will be held for the group; exact location and time will be announced. Dr. Hunacek is in the U.S. on a temporary visa doing cultural exchange work through the Texas Education Agency and the U. S. Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare. Slides of Czechoslovakia will be shown, plus other interesting features.

Thursday, March 5, Temple Junior College will present a "Czech Evening," as part of its annual Fine Arts Festival. The scene of the festival will be the Arnold Student Union Building on the TJC campus. Admission will be by advanced ticket sales and the number will be limited. An authentic Czech evening meal will be served, consisting of breaded Moravian cutlets, hot Czech potato salad, mixed vegetable casserole, and apple strudel for dessert. Deadline for purchasing tickets will be Monday, March 2, and may be purchased in advance from Mrs. H. C.

The new West Post Office was dedicated at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22 (Washington's Birthday). The honors were done by the Honorable W. R. Poage, Congressman from the 11th Congressional District, who was introduced by West Mayor, Bro, Jos. F. Holasek.

Daniel L. Kahanek who is acting supervisor of appeals is a native of Granger and attended school there. He received his law degree from the University of Texas in 1962 and started working for TEC in appeals in 1963.

All of his tenure has been in the Appeals Department in the State Office.

He is a member of the Texas Bar Association, Board of the State Office, Austin District Credit Union, Vice President of the State Office IAPES

Club and a member of TPEA. Also a member of Komensky Lodge No. 20, SPJST. Bro. Kahanek and his wife Theresa have one very young son, Keith Ray, born December 30, 1969.

Daniel is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kahanek of Taylor.

The Imperial Valley, California, claims the world's largest population living below sea level.

SP ,Tf.:f Lodge No. 189' held its first meeting of the year on Hunday, January 25, at the home of "i1, and . 11 Sven. The meeting; started at 4 p.m. with a large attendance of members.

President Molbe FWell called the meeting to order and ihe P edge of Allegiance was said by all present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and accepted, and tie treasurer's report was also read and approved.

'The Audit Committee, consisting of Mr. Robert Giles, Edwin Schmid, and Gene Nowak, gave their report and it was found that our officers worked very well during the past year and that our young lodge is progressing nicely.

The organizers reported that during the year, 1969, our lodge gained 23 new members. (Hurray — and now that we have two organizers in our lodge, perhaps we will do even better in 1970).

Our District Youth Leader, Mrs. Lola Vavra from Bryan, Texas, was present and with the assistance of Miss Jean Kubiak, our youth club was organized.

Some of the activities that are planned for the youth are camping, hunting, handicrafts, woodwork, dancing cooking planting, and other projects and experiments, so watch for this, kids, you're in for a good time and a lot of fun.

The ladies of the lodge prepared a delicious supper and everyone had a pleasant and enjoyable evening and many members even stayed late to enjoy fellowship with members of the lodge.

Our next meeting will be held in April and the date and place of this meeting will be announced later.

Fraternally yours, Gene Nowak, Reporter - STJSTLODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Members and Friends, The weather has been nice and pleasant here in Houston for the past few days. That is a sign that spring is just around the corner; also a sign for us members to get busy in our respective lodges and plan various functions and activities for the summer months, so that our members and friends can come and support us with the various projects. The Fifth Anniversary of our lodge was well attended. The beef barbecue dinner was delicious. Lee Roy Matocha and the Texas Dutchmen furnished the music for the battle dance that afternoon. This was the first appearance for the group and we think they are great. Harry Czarnek is very proud of his group; they specialize in old-time and modern music. Most of the members are men majoring in music, and compose their own music.

We will be hearing from this fine group more often.

The 1972 Convention Committee is sponsoring a homemade chili supper, followed by a social at Lodge 142, Nolda Street, Friday night, March 13. This will be regular homemade chili prepared by some of the best cooks of

Lodge 142. Serving will start at 6 p.m., followed by a social at 8 p.m. The Lodge 88 social ;group will assist our neighbor lodge with the social.

The youth club members of Lodge 88 were saddened by the accidental. death of William Leonard (Tracy) Heemer, III, age 16, of 1901 West 14th Street. He was killed in an automobile accident Saturday, :February 14. Tracy was a student at Reagan High School and a member of Timba •grove Baptist Church. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Leonard Heemer, jr., and sisters, Mrs. Connie Thompson, and Miss Sheila Heemer. We extend our sincere sympathy to the family.

We have just received word of the sudden death of Father Lad. Mimieek of the Frydek Catholic Parish, who passed away due to a heart attack Friday, February 13. We have lost a great friend. lather Lad was wellknown throughout the state for the preservation of the Czech culture. It was through his efforts that the Frydek celebrations have proved to be so successful, where Czech friends meet from all over the State of Texas. We extend our sincere sympathy to the family.

NAMES IN THE NEWS: Brother and Sister Louis and Oleta HanuS celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary Sunday, February 8, with an open house reception at their home. Hundreds of friends came and wished Louis and Oleta many more happy anniversaries. Mrs. Frank Krejci was honored on her 88th birthday with a dinner at the home of her daughter, Sister Tillie Fielmcamp, and son-inlaw, Oscar. Mrs. Krejci has been confined to bed for the last few months and we hope she gets to feeling better.

Master Sergeant Eugene Lesak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Lesak, is being assigned to Germany for a tour of Army duty, after being stationed at Fort Ord, Calif. Itasca and Jarda Cerny enjoyed a vacation in Las Vegas. Glad to see Sister Georgia Lee up and about after a bout with the flu. Bro. John Starcala has been a patient in the Medical Arts Hospital for two months, after undergoing surgery. He is doing much better. The Dramatic Club and Choral Group members were treated with a traditional Czech dinner, Saturday, February 11. We must say the dinner was delicious. Sister Frances Olexa and Slister Mary Johnson prepared the kric,dlicky, served with venison Stro-

ganoff, ham, potato salad, and kolaches. They were assisted by Harriett Allison, Anna Svestka, Annie Vala, and Anna Kilnar. Brothers Vala and Sicner served the refreshing to .)eer.

The Dramatic and Choral Clubs w euld like to express their thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Victor Janak for their generous donation of venison. Louis Vosta was surprised ,,with a birthday cake presented him during the dinner. Louis is a member of the forthcoming C tech play scheduled for Sunday, Apri. 12.

The Sick Committee reported that Bro. John Larry SMajstrla was in the hospital in Houston recovering from a serious operation. We all wish him a speedy recovery.

LODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Members, Our meeting was called to order at 2:45 p.m. by President Henry Slovak.

Margaret Rose Gaidusek and Ricky McIlroy led the Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Pledge.

All officers were present. The minutes of the January meeting were approved as read.

Visitors were: Bro. and Sis. Alvin Nesucla of Ennis. Bro. Nesuda, District 3 Organizer, reported that Lodge 66 had the most sales of insurance in 1969. They had eleven active organizers. He reported there would be a beginners' and refresher course held at Lodge 66 on Saturday, March 7, from -9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sister Wilma Nesuda, District 3 Youth Director, also spoke to the youth. She told them the Youth Achievement Day will be in June, which isn't too far away. She told them to be planning and starting on what they wished to do. Also there arc the State YADs to plan for. Camp will be at Camp Val Verde, so be planning for them. We enjoyed having the Nesudas come out to visit us. We hope they will come again.

A thank-you note was read from Sister Emma Ceske. She reported her mother, Sister Millie Na.vara, is doing fine. She had been very ill for awhile, but is doing better.

Sister Libbie Parma presented the Lodge 66 Scrapbooks to Brother Emil Hanus who will keep them up-to-date.

Two books are completed. They are from the years, 1947 to 1963, and 1964 to 1970. If any of you members have any pictures of events or occasions at the lodge, they would be appreciated and would be put in the book. Please get in touch with Bro. Emit Hanus if you have anything you think he can use, Sister Parma said the yottth were having a Valentine contest, and Valentine boxes. The boxes would be auctioned at the end of the lodge meeting. The judges were Sisters Mary Simeik, Philomena Miller and Julienne Hensel. Sister Libbie said 28 youth, along with the youth leaders and parents went to see Holiday on Ice. The Health Committee ;reported that Bro. Carrol Simcik had surgery. He is at home and doing OK. Brothers John Simcik and Bennie Engelke were also ill, and there have been many members ill with the flu. Hope it has just about run its course, as it sure isn't enjoyable. Hope everyone is feeling better now. Sister 1VZazanec said she had sent sympathy cards to the George Huessner family, on the loss of their father, also to the Arthur Schiemez family on the loss of his father. May they rest in peace.

We have a report that Brother Otto Hanes is going to the hospital for surgery this week. We hope it is not serious and wish him a speedy recovery.

So many of our youth were present that it prompted President Pokladnik to proudly tell the audience our children will always have a place in the SPJST and much thought and responsibility has been given to help them be accepted and be good citizens.

Lodge 84 Queen Carolyn Frnka, in behalf of the teen club, presented a beautiful mirror which will be hung in the entry hall and David Becan, Jr., youth president, in behalf of the junior youth, presented the lodge with kitchen silverware. As you enter the lodge you will no doubt stop and admire the beautiful baseball trophies in the new trophy case. Both of our past meetings have been promising. The youth club has begun to function again and our hope is that it will move forward successfully.

Our February meeting was convened at 2:22 p.m. with all officers being

In our lodge, the longstanding order of procedure is that all of the officers take their places before the meeting is called to order. The secretary presents the certificates and other papers to be signed to the president for his signature, then hands them to the financial secretary to be entered in that book. There are also mortuary dues and premium refund checks for the members present. To those members who are not present, we try to send them by mail, and there are many who have paid-up certificates and/or live in other cities. We have a large amount of trouble with those, having to look up their addresses, especially, if they don't give their forwarding address.

Our financial secretary begins collecting dues immediately upon arrival at the lodge hall. We have a 10c monthly local lodge dues assessment because the '7 per cent return from the Supreme Lodge does not cover the annual expense.

Our financial secretary would have a much easier job if all members paid regularly without having to be sent notices and really pay their dues annually and, at the some time, save about 5 per cent.

0 - Since the beginning of 1970, we have a door prize, of which Sister Judith Majek is in charge. Each attendant at the meeting may pay 10c to be registered. Before the meeting is adjourned a winning name is drawn.

We had 35 members present in January and 40 in February.

Sisters and Brothers: The National Fraternal Congress, of which our Society is a member, is again requesting and stressing the impor tance of conducting a survey, by each Society, to show the extent 4f our fraternal activities and how rin011 Was contributed by local lodges for charitable, benevolent and fraternal activities in 1969.

A questionnaire has been sent out to be used for the survey. in preparing the report it is necessary that all activities called for in the questionnaire be compiled and entered in the proper schedules. In lodges that "have organized youth clubs, the youth leaders should compile the data of the youth club requested in the questionnaire, as to the number of meetings held, 1 eluding district and state meetings attended, amount of money spent for youth activities, contributions to charitable and benevolent acts, and all other fraternal acts. Combine the report of the youth club with the home lodge report and enter the total amounts in the pro p er space in the questionnaire and return it to the Supreme Lodge not later than MAY 1st, 1979. The Supreme Lodge will then compile the overall report and send it to National Fraternal Congress headquarters.

It is just as important, if not more so, to report the acts of fraternalism, as the amount of money spent for charitable and benevolent Purposes.

The object of the survey is to have facts available to present to the lawmakers to prove that the fraternal benefit societies are actually doing much more than just offering insurance protection to their members. Bills are still being presented in the 50 state legislatures, U. S. CorigresS, and in Canada, affecting fraternal insurance societies and most of these were defeated due to the data compiled by the National Fraternal Congress in previous surveys. We cannot over-emphasize_ the importance of this information.

Dear Readers, I have a report to make this month that I feel all of you will be interested in hearing. We now have a new youth club in our district. Granger Lodge 20 is organized and as of last Sunday, the 15th of February, they have 19 new members in their club. Isn't this a fantastic addition to our district? The youth leader at Granger is Mrs. Betty Hajda. Good luck to our Granger Lodge and their new youth club. I want to also take this opportunity to thank all the officers and members of Granger for all the wonderful cooperation and support that they have given me while I was working with them to form this new club. Although it was work; it was so much easier, knowing that I had the support of all the officers and members at all times during this venture. We will be looking forward to

having the Granger Youth Club participating and taking an active part in all our district and state functions.

Dear Readers, It is with great pleasure and honor to serve as your DYD for the next couple of weeks. It will be a busy three weeks. We are working for a big successful camp' Also, District V will hold its YAD on July 12 at Lcidge 88, 1435 Beall. Boys and girls be thinking of what you will want to enter .s your craft and talent.

My ears and eyes are open for a lovely queen and handsome kiti; from every active lodge to take part in our pageant.

The District V spring meeting will be March 15 at Lodge 88. The youth department and the teens will have a bake contest. Every youth is asked to bake a cake to enter ii one of the following categories: tallest, smallest, longest, most beautiful, most fraternal, most colorful, most patriotic. A first place award will be given to each category, then the cakes will be auctioned off. This fund-raising project will help both local and district, club activities.

Our first district Beseda practice took place Friday, February 20. Our next practice will be March 6. at 7:30 p.m. at Lodge 88, 1435 Beall, Houston.

3, Deaf Members and Friends, This is to 'remind everyone once again that we will have our kite-flying contest on Sunday, March 1, at Cottonwood Hall after the SPJST meeting.

You 'youngsters start thinking about the kind of kite you plan to enter that day. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: The best homemade kite, prettiest, ugliest, largest, smallest, oldest, and high-flyingest kite. if the weather is bad and we are unable to - fly our kites, bring them anyway, because all of them will be judged, except for the flying contest.

In the high-flying contest, we are asking the adults to participate. I have already heard rumors among some of our adults about a real competitive contest. This really points up a big kite-flying show.

Here are a few words about our Valentine party. It was a great success with all the youngsters and some of the adults reporting that they enjoyed playing the party games, getting Valentines, and taking part in the lunch. I only wish all of you could have been there and seen the hall decorated with beautiful handmade Valentines that the youngsters made at Their Wednesday work nights. Thanks go to the adults and parent:3 for 'bring-. ing food. and helping out with everything.

2 p.m. at the SPJST Hall. Mrs. Jerlene Balusek, District II Youth Director was present and, along with Mrs. Betty Hajda, local youth director, welcomed nineteen members into the club. Mrs. Balusek informed the group of the rules, dues, various activities of the club, etc., explaining to them the great benefits of belonging to the SPJST youth club, Election of officers for the newlyorganized club was postponed until the next special meeting. Various committees are to be selected then, also.

Plans for a skating party were made.

The club is to go skating ' at Temple on Thursday evening, February 26 and all members were urged to comei,lo enjoy the fun. The Progressive PiggyBank was chosen as a fund-raising project. Ea ger volunteers to help get the piggy on his way were Paul Mikulencak and Kelly Cavanaugh. Special entertainment was provided for both the youth and the local meeting by the Young Loves, a singing group composed of six girls, accompanied by two guitarists. Miss Emily Ann Cavanaugh presented her group who delighted all with their presentation of several numbers, among the were: "Sounds of Silence" and "Tijuana Taxi."

Mrs. Balusek had arrived very adequately equipped with many fun games for all the members. Many contests were held and many prizes were awarded to the winning contestants.

A covered dish supper followed with a large Valentine cake being served to everyone by the youth members.

A most entertaining afternoon was reported by all, and I would like for everyone who is interested in joining the youth group to call me and come to the next meeting.

We left Taylor at 5:45 p.m., and ate at 7 p.m. The meal was very good. I want to thank Mrs. Patsy Bartosh for playing her accordion for the dancers while they were singing "A Ja Sam" and "Aj, Lucka Lucka Siroka," and they also repeated it in lFiriglish.

Time does fly. I read in the Youth Leaders' Newsletter that March 15•21 will be the dates for the Longhorn Recreation Lab at Glen Lake Camp, Glen Rose, Texas. Our next meeting will be held on March 8.

YOUTH CLU3 MIMBERS OF LODGE 88, HOUSTON XPRESS1ON OF SYMPATHY

As a member of the Teen Club of Lodge 88, I wish to express me deepest sympathy to the William Leonard "teenier, Jr., family on the death of their son, Tracey.

William Leonard (Tracey) ileemer III, a Reagan High School siudeni, died at 4:45 p.m. ' Saturday, 16 houus after the car in which he was riding struck a tree in the 600 block of West 21st.

He was 16. His parents live at 1901 West 14th St.. Fir died in Heights Hospital. John Patrick Epps, 19, a student at Texas ARM University, was the driver of the car. He was listed in fair condition following the accident. Two other passengers in the cv were less seriously injured.

Tracey was a member of the Teen Club of Lodge 88, and as a sophomore he attended John H. Reagan High School.

Tracey will always be remembered by all who knew him and we will all miss him very much.

NO. 153, LA SALLE Readers, At our last regular club meeting, F e lmtary 3, we had quite a few things go'ng for us. One was the Valentine season. Everyone seemed very content with the candy hearts, sandwiches, and hot chocolate we had for refreshments.

(We had hot chocolate because of the freezing weather outside).

We discussed, and were proud of our $240.85 profit from the March of Dimes benefit supuer our club had sponsored on January 24.

Later in the meeting we were divided into groups according to phrases like: Be My Valentine, Let's Be Valentines, etc. Each group having its own teen leader, were given tools — paper, glue, scissors, etc. — out of which they were to decorate Valentine Loxes. While all the boxes were being finished, several of the methers of our club members judged them. Keith Dyson won first place.

Brother Neskarik was born May 6, 1886 in Sobeehlob, Austria. He was retired farmer and bad lived in Bay.for County for 64 years. He was a member of Lodge No. 95 for the past 60 years. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Seymour.

Survivors include five sons, Gabriel of Paducah, John of Jayton, Texas, Eugene of Augusta, Texas, Stanley of Captain, N.M., and Joe of Seymour; three daughters, Mrs. Tillie Sedlacek of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Mary Chaney of Menbata, Calif., and Mrs. Martha Pabif of Blackfoot, Idaho; 17 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were at the Sacred Heart Church, in Seymour, with Rev. Marion Whitfill and Rev. David' Redmond, OMJ, officiating. Interment was in the Catholic Cemetery at Seymour.

On November 14, 1916, he was united in marriage with Annie Fojt. They lived on the farm bordering Highway 21 West of Caldwell. Mrs. Marek preceded-him in death on May 18, 1960.

He was a member- of the Caldwell B •ethern Church. He was also a member of SPJST Lodge No. 9 Snook, and of the Mutual Aid, Society of Caldwell Brethren Church.

Funeral services fcr Bro. Marek were held in Caldwell Brethren Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 7, with Rev. Henry E. Beseda and Rev. Daniel J. March officiating. Burial was in the Providence Cemetery under the direction of Bowers-Harvey-Schiller funeral directors.

Items of Interest A BIT OF ADVICE FOR HOME GARDENERS

It is time for home gardeners to start planning their spring gardens, reminds a Texas A&M University horticulture professor.

"Most important is to be sure that you have good seed and that this seed is the proper variety for your area," Dr. Homer Blackhurst, vegetable breeding specialist said.

It is important for the home gardener to determine the family needs and preferences when choosing the types of vegetables and the quantity of each vegetable to be planted, he said.

The person planning a garden should also determine what the quantity, price. and quality of vegetables in the market will be when he is harvesting the same vegetables in his own garden.

"The home gardener should determine if it is profitable for him to plant and care for each vegetable," he said.

Land should be prepared well in advance of planting, the vegetable breeding specialist said; explaining that this is usually done as soon as the weather will permit.

It is a good idea to put part of the fertilizer under the beds as they are being prepared for planting. This will make the fertilizer readily available when the plants need it.

The precise kind and amount of fertilizer to be used can only be determined by a soil test, he noted.

The method of taking a soil test as well as information concerning the

seeds best suited for the gardener's own area can be obtained at the county agricultural agents office.

In lieu of a soil test, a rough rule of thumb is to use a complete fertilizer e. 12-24-12) a a rate of 300 pounds an acre.

"When seeding, it is generally best to follow the directions on the seed package", he explained. 'But because of frequent early rains, a fine mulch such as cotton seed hulls or sawdust should be put over the rows to avoid compaction of the soil before the seedlings emerge.It is very important to thin plants to the distances recommended on each individual package, he said. If the plant package has been lost or discarded, this information is also available at the county agent's office.

"It is very important to control weeds in the garden," he noted. "This can be done by the conventional methods of pulling and hoeing, but is best done with the use of a mulch around the plants."

Sufficient water is most important for vegetables, Blackhurst said, noting that vegetable crops will require approximately 1V9 inches of water a week .either by rainfall or irrigation.

"Above all don't allow vegetable crops to go into water stress. This will seriously affect the quality of the vegetables," he said.

LAMAR'S LOVE POEMS ON DISPLAY AT MUSEUM

Houston â&#x20AC;&#x201D; The romantic poems of Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas, are the keynote of the Valentine exhibit now on display in the San Jacinto Museum of History at the San Jacinto Monument near Houston.

Along with the collection of poems are pictures and other mementos of Mirabeau and Henrietta Lamar as well as a collection of Victorian Valentines and Victorian jewelery and accessories worn by other early Texans. Included is an elegant and glamorous lace mantilla which belonged to Frances Judith Trask, pioneer Texas educator who, in 1835, opened the first boarding school for girls at Cole's Settlement, later Independence.

is learning to repair aircraft engines at the Waco Campus of the Texas State Technical Institute.

Mrs. Georgia Uzzle of 1525 Alston Drive is enrolled in airframe and powerplant mechanics, a 100 contact hour night course.

During the day she is employed at the General Dynamics facility on the James Connally Campus where she does sheet-metal work. She said, "I have always loved anything that pertains to aircraft work. I received most of my experience at Boeing Aircraft Company in Wichita, Kans. There I worked on B-47s for three and one half years."

After completion of the course, Mrs. Uzzle will be in a distinguished group.

There are only 14 licensed female aircraft mechanics in the United States.

In about two years, Mrs. Uzzle and her husband Bill of the Uzzle Damage Appraisers Company, plan to buy a

plane that will seat at least four passengers.

Mrs. Uzzle said that she decided to take the night course because she needed a brushup. She said occasionally her husband is asked to appraise airplanes as well as automobiles and trucks. Mrs. Uzzle said she hopes to be able to give her husband a hand there.

She has some flying instructions, "I learned enough to get off the ground," she said. Shortly after starting her flying lessons, she had to discontinue because of an eye infection.

The grandmother of three, and mother of seven, is five feet- one inch tall.

Many of her friends call her "Shortie".

Her oldest child is sixteen. Her youngest grandchild is one year old.

Mrs. Uzzle said that her past-time is tinkering with things around the house. She does minor repairs on televisions, radios and other household appliances. In the, past, she has worked with electrical systems, radar, electrical machineguns and installed ancraft instruments.

Although she is a full-time employee and a student at night, she is very active in the LaVega Boosters Club, the Timbercrest Baptist Church and the Tirnbercrest Civic Club. apds No GAME FISH KILLS FROM COLD IN BAY SO FAR THIS YEAR Fish kills along the coast due to cold this winter have been minor and limited to nonga.me species such as catfish and cutlass fish, according to Terry Leary, coastal fisheries coordinator for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

According to Leary, the fish most sensitive to low temperatures usually leave the bays and head for deep water before it gets cold, but some few stay behind and are killed. The Texas coast is on the fringe of the range of some more tropical species and those that remain in the bays during the winter are usually lost during the first freeze.

The snook is one such straggler species in Texas. Hardhead catfish and cutlass fish, abundant in the bays during the summer, generally leave as the waters cool.

Leary says most fish are susceptable to a sudden, sharp drop in temperature and prolonged cold. These extreme conditions willed 16,000,000 pounds of fish in January, 1947, and 60,000,000 pounds in January, 1951, and caused a lesser kill in 1962.

VtSTkifK The department is presently conducting experiments with shrimp at the Marine Fishery Research Station near Palacios to see how they withstand the cold. Leary said approximately half the shrimp have died due to the cold, and the Department has accummulated valuable data from the experiments.

Fishermen can use the cold snapS to good advantage, according to Leary.

He said game fish will be concentrated in deep holes, harbors and channels where they are more or less protected from the low temperatures. Food in these places is rapidly depleted, and the fish are ready for a meal when a baited hook comes their way.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department operates 121 public boat ramps throughout the state. The average cost of a p ublic boat ramp in Texas is $10,500.
