DEAR APPALACHIA: SONGS FROM MY MOUNTAIN HOME I. Mountaintop About Dear Appalachia: Songs From My Mountain Home.

I spent many of my most formative years living in Dahlonega, GA, a wonderful small town in Lumpkin County nestled in the mountains of north Georgia. Dahlonega is known for its festivals, folk art, and bluegrass music, all of which permeate the atmosphere of the town's beautiful courthouse square and neighboring University of North Georgia. In 1828, Dahlonega was the epicenter of a major gold rush, spawning many stories and legends, as well as the oft-repeated phrase "There's gold in them thar hills!" Dear Appalachia is a set of three songs inspired by my child-hood home, two of which I was honored to record with Salt Creek, a bluegrass band made up of some great grad school buddies. Dear Appalachia is an homage to the vistas and woodland trails which form many of the most treasured memories of my youth.

The music is set for a standard bluegrass "string" band, but certainly may be supplemented (dobro, dulcimer, recorder, penny whistle?). The piano, however, is meant for rehearsal only. It mirrors the rhythm and general voicing of the strummed instruments in the bluegrass ensemble (primarily the guitar). The chords should be slightly rolled on the down beats.

In concert, if the full ensemble is present (Bass, Guitar, Mandolin, Fiddle, Banjo), there should be no piano. However, if acoustics dictate adding the piano to balance a slightly larger choir, it is permissible. In that case, the piano should not play what is written, but rather tastefully "improv" on the chord progression as a supporting member of the ensemble. In the event that only a few ensemble members are present or feasible (for instance only fiddle and mandolin), the piano is essential as a band reduction and should play what is written. The full score contains a "realized" fiddle and mandolin part, but accomplished players/ensembles may choose to disregard what is written and create their own solo and accompanying material based on the chord progression. I encourage directors to use their best judgement to conduct a tastefull and successful performance. -Timothy Michael Powell

DEAR APPALACHIA: SONGS FROM MY MOUNTAIN HOME II. The Ballad of the One-Armed Man About Dear Appalachia: Songs From My Mountain Home.

I spent many of my most formative years living in Dahlonega, GA, a wonderful small town in Lumpkin County nestled in the mountains of north Georgia. Dahlonega is known for its festivals, folk art, and bluegrass music, all of which permeate the atmosphere of the town's beautiful courthouse square and neighboring University of North Georgia. In 1828, Dahlonega was the epicenter of a major gold rush, spawning many stories and legends, as well as the oft-repeated phrase "There's gold in them thar hills!" Dear Appalachia is a set of three fictional songs inspired by my child-hood home, two of which I was honored to record with Salt Creek, a bluegrass band made up of some great grad school buddies. Dear Appalachia is an homage to the vistas and woodland trails which form many of the most treasured memories of my youth.

The music is set for a standard bluegrass "string" band, but certainly may be supplemented (dobro, dulcimer, penny whistle?). The piano, however, is meant for rehearsal only. It mirrors the rhythm and general voicing of the strummed instruments in the bluegrass ensemble (primarily the guitar). The chords should be slightly rolled on the down beats.

In concert, if the full ensemble is present (Bass, Guitar, Mandolin, Fiddle, Banjo), there should be no piano. However, if acoustics dictate adding the piano to balance a slightly larger choir, it is permissible. In that case, the piano should not play what is written, but rather tastefully "improv" on the chord progression as a supporting member of the ensemble. In the event that only a few ensemble members are present or feasible (for instance only fiddle and mandolin), the piano is essential as a band reduction and should play what is written. The full score contains a "realized" fiddle and mandolin part, but accomplished players/ensembles may choose to disregard what is written and create their own solo and accompanying material based on the chord progression. I spent many of my most formative years living in Dahlonega, GA, a wonderful small town in Lumpkin County nestled in the mountains of north Georgia. Dahlonega is known for its festivals, folk art, and bluegrass music, all of which permeate the atmosphere of the town's beautiful courthouse square and neighboring University of North Georgia. In 1828, Dahlonega was the epicenter of a major gold rush, spawning many stories and legends, as well as the oft-repeated phrase "There's gold in them thar hills!" Dear Appalachia is a set of three songs inspired by my child-hood home, two of which I was honored to record with Salt Creek, a bluegrass band made up of some great grad school buddies. Dear Appalachia is an homage to the vistas and woodland trails which form many of the most treasured memories of my youth.

The music is set for a standard bluegrass "string" band, but certainly may be supplemented (dobro, dulcimer, recorder, penny whistle?). The piano, however, is meant for rehearsal only. It mirrors the rhythm and general voicing of the strummed instruments in the bluegrass ensemble (primarily the guitar). The chords should be slightly rolled on the down beats.

In concert, if the full ensemble is present (Bass, Guitar, Mandolin, Fiddle, Banjo), there should be no piano. However, if acoustics dictate adding the piano to balance a slightly larger choir, it is permissible. In that case, the piano should not play what is written, but rather tastefully "improv" on the chord progression as a supporting member of the ensemble. In the event that only a few ensemble members are present or feasible (for instance only fiddle and mandolin), the piano is essential as a band reduction and should play what is written. The full score contains a "realized" fiddle and mandolin part, but accomplished players/ensembles may choose to disregard what is written and create their own solo and accompanying material based on the chord progression. I encourage directors to use their best judgement to conduct a tastefull and
