Spirit Rock Newsletter Booklet — 2025 Spring/Summer/Fall Issue
“If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete.”
–Jack Korn eld
As the days grow longer and the buds continue to bloom in this season of renewal, it feels fitting to share this poignant story:
Twelve-year-old Matthew Flores from Sandy, Utah, approached his postal worker, Ron Lynch, and asked if he had any extra advertisements or random newsletters. Matthew explained that he loved to read but couldn't a ord books, and even the bus fare to the library was too much most of the time. So, he'd take anything the mailman had that was extra.
Ron Lynch was floored. "He didn't want electronics. He didn't want to sit in front of the TV playing games all day. The kid just wanted to read," Lynch told the local newspaper. He asked his Facebook friends for reading material. Soon, Flores was receiving books from all over the world—the U.S., England, India, South America. For his part, Flores said he planned to read all the books and then share them with other book-starved kids.
This story illustrates how simple it is to live from the heart of a Bodhisattva. You don't have to wait to become some shiny Buddha. You can do it in each little moment. Now is your time.
Meditation practice and retreat have always been at the heart of the path of loving awareness. For 40 years, Spirit Rock has been dedicated to upholding these transformative traditions in the modern world. It has never been more important to engage in spiritual practice, and Spirit Rock o ers the opportunity for everyone, no matter their background, to deepen their path of compassion on this beautiful and sacred land and in this caring community.
In the spirit of dāna (generosity), I invite you to join me and Spirit Rock in our mission to spread compassion, understanding, and inner peace to all beings everywhere. A Mettā May contribution, no matter the size, will directly support our Scholarship Fund, opening the door wider for our saṅgha to access retreats and teachings that can transform lives. To donate, visit spiritrock.org/donate or use the envelope found between pages 12 and 13.
No action goes unaccounted for. It doesn’t take much for us to add our goodness. With each small act of compassion, we become a make-weight of hope—tipping the scales of the world toward mindful loving awareness.
With mettā, Jack Kornfield

Food for the Soul A Look Inside the Spirit Rock Kitchen
At Spirit Rock, cooking is more than a task—it’s a practice of mindfulness, an offering of care, and a way to nourish both body and spirit. The Spirit Rock kitchen staff provides delicious, wholesome meals for retreatants, guests, and staff, sourcing fresh ingredients from local farms and vendors such as Full Belly, Marin Roots, Fire Swamp Provisions, and Star Route. Each meal is crafted with intention, reflecting a commitment to sustainability, community, and the deep connection between food and practice.
The kitchen is also a space for mindful work. Yogi jobs, or “work meditation,” are an essential part of retreat life, offering retreatants the opportunity to engage in service as meditation. In the kitchen, this might mean chopping vegetables, washing dishes, or helping prepare ingredients for the next day’s meal. With each task, retreatants are invited to bring full awareness to the present moment—feeling the texture of a carrot as they peel, listening to the rhythm of water as they wash, or savoring the scent of herbs as they cook.
Our kitchen team collaborates to design weekly menus, drawing inspiration from seasonal ingredients. Alongside these fresh creations, Spirit Rock’s staple recipes themselves have become deeply woven into retreat life.
Comforting dishes like opening day lentil soup, homemade granola, and tikka masala are perennial favorites—meals that retreatants look forward to and remember long after they leave. These cherished recipes, and the dedicated kitchen staff, are an essential part of the retreat experience, offering warmth, familiarity, and a deep connection to the Spirit Rock tradition.
This spring, we invite you to bring a taste of the Spirit Rock kitchen into your own home with our Snow Pea, Edamame, and Bean Sprout Salad. Light, crisp, and full of the vibrant flavors of spring, this simple dish is perfect as it is—but feel free to get creative. Add some mint to pair with the sweetness, bell pepper for a splash of color, or even rice noodles and more dressing to make it a meal on its own!

Spotlight: Dedicated Practitioners Program
For those who feel a deep connection to the Buddhist path, and to Insight Meditation in particular, and for those who feel called to teach the Dharma, the Dedicated Practitioners Program (DPP) offers a unique opportunity to deeply engage with the Buddha’s teachings and strengthen your meditation practice within a diverse, supportive community.
This two-year intensive program includes five week-long residential retreats, monthly coursework, regular group meetings, “Dharma buddy” sessions, and mentorship from experienced teachers. Participants commit to a formal daily practice, using the teachings to explore the individual and collective dimensions of suffering and liberation.
DPP blends structured study with personal engagement, where the six months between retreats are dedicated to embodying the Eightfold Path and integrating the Dharma into everyday life. In past cycles, participants reported profound impacts on their meditation practice, deepening their understanding of core Buddhist teachings and bringing the Dharma alive in new, unexpected ways.
The program is open to experienced practitioners with a minimum total of 5 years daily Dharma practice, a letter of recommendation from a sponsoring teacher, and at least 50 nights of silent, residential retreat practice. If you have not yet met these prerequisites, consider attending upcoming retreats—such as Intuitive Wisdom and Embodied Love (June 5-12) or Summer Insight Retreat (July 18-27), or any of our dozens of retreats remaining in 2025—to fulfill the requirements and connect with a teacher before the program begins.
“I got so much out of DPP as a participant that it feels like a great blessing to be part of its continuation,” explains DPP teacher, Gullu Singh. “I love working with and being in community with sincere practitioners, and the program is especially great for deepening and maturing one’s understanding of the teachings.”
Warm, rigorous, and deeply enriching, DPP offers a rare opportunity to grow in wisdom, compassion, and ethical living alongside a dedicated community. If you feel called to deepen your practice in this way, we encourage you to apply—or reach out with any questions to trainings@spiritrock.org.

What does it mean when retreats are concurrent?
These are two smaller retreats happening simultaneously with separate teachings, teachers, and meditation halls. Participants share dining areas and residence halls but commit fully to one retreat. Visiting or switching retreats is not permitted.
What is the self-paced option for a retreat?
The self-paced option allows you to engage with a retreat remotely. Each day, you’ll receive 2.5-3 hours of Dharma talks and guided meditations—often totaling 20+ hours of content per week—delivered via livestream and recorded for on-demand access.
Family & Youth
One of the greatest gifts we can offer youth is a safe space to be themselves, connect, and grow. Spirit Rock’s family programs blend meditation with socialemotional development, authentic connection, and embodiment. Our skilled teachers bring deep Dharma practice and expertise in working with all ages, meeting youth and parents where they are.
Continuing Education
Mindfulness and meditation can be powerful supports for the life and work of healthcare professionals. Spirit Rock offers Continuing Education Credits (CECs) for psychologists, therapists, social workers, counselors, nurses, chiropractors, and others in many of our programs.
