Girl Scout Mission

Girl

Girl Scout Promise

On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Girl Scout Law

I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

The Transformative Power of Girl Scouts

This past year was an exciting time for Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska. We were the fourth Council in the country to open a Girl Scout DreamLab, had our third straight year of membership growth, and provided life-changing experiences for Girl Scouts of all ages. I love talking with Girl Scouts from across the state about their favorite Girl Scout activities, the skills they are learning, and the relationships they’ve built along the way. Recent research from Girl Scouts of the USA indicates girls, parents/caregivers all want what Girl Scouts provides: a safe space to learn the skills to navigate life with purpose and joy.

Girl Scouts is a little bit of everything. Through our nationally developed, research-based curriculum, Girl Scouts experience hands-on, team-based programming designed to develop a stronger sense of self, positive values, healthy relationships, challenge-seeking, and community problem-solving. From camp to entrepreneurship to travel to STEM, Girl Scouts are developing skills that not only help them be more courageous and confident today but serve as a foundation for successful adulthood. In a world that could use more kindness and belonging, Girl Scouts provides the safe space for girls to figure out who they are and the difference they want to make in the world.

We are grateful to the families, volunteers, donors, and supporters who helped make it possible for us to continue our mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.

Thank you for helping us change the world one girl at a time.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Empowering Dreams, Inspiring Leaders

As we reflect on the achievements of 20232024, it’s clear this has been a transformative year for Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska.

One of the most exciting milestones has been the launch of the Girl Scout DreamLab, a dynamic new space designed to empower Girl Scouts to explore their potential, dream big, and develop skills for a lifetime of leadership. This innovative space represents our commitment to providing resources and experiences that inspire creativity, collaboration, and growth for every girl.

Throughout this year, our girls have continued to shine—whether through outdoor adventures, community service projects, or STEM initiatives. These moments reaffirm the importance of our mission to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.

As board president, I am deeply grateful for the support of our volunteers, donors, and community partners. Together, we are making an extraordinary impact on the lives of girls across Nebraska. Thank you for standing with us as we empower the next generation of leaders.

Here’s to another year of building dreams and achieving goals!

Thank You to Our Donors

None of this would have been possible without the incredible generosity of our donors that helped us raise $1,231,200. Your support has turned the Girl Scout DreamLab into a thriving space where Girl Scouts can discover, create, and connect. Thank you for believing in our mission and making this dream a reality!

Girl Scout DreamLab Capital Campaign

Since opening its doors in May 2024, the Girl Scout DreamLab has welcomed 1,107 visitors through the end of the fiscal year in September 2024—a testament to its immediate impact and popularity.

Programs at the Girl Scout DreamLab

Our first summer was packed with exciting opportunities for Girl Scouts! Daisy, Brownie, and Junior Girl Scouts explored Mechanical Engineering through badge workshops like Space Explorer, Leap Bots, Paddle Boats, and Crane Design.

Crafternoons became a hit, where Girl Scouts earned maker badges in Art and Design, Create and Innovate, Craft and Tinker, with creative projects like building their own birdhouses.

First Friday Events brought energy and excitement with engaging themes such as Disney Karaoke, Friendsgiving, and Glow Party.

Community Engagement

The Girl Scout DreamLab also played a key role in community events, including a Back-to-School Rally in collaboration with other nonprofit organizations and community partners, which drew over 200 attendees.

With a dynamic start like this, the Girl Scout DreamLab is already proving to be a hub of creativity, learning, and community connection!

Girl Scouts Highest Awards

Girl Scouting’s highest awards—the Bronze, Silver, and Gold—recognize girls who make a lasting difference in their communities and the world. We celebrate these inspiring girls, who have demonstrated leadership and taken action to make positive change in the world at our annual award ceremonies. Here are some examples of their accomplishments.

Katherine Berry Omaha

Developing Community Resources for Dog Health Information and Education

Katherine partnered with the Golden Retriever Rescue in Nebraska (GRRIN) to create pamphlets on dog health, covering topics like hip dysplasia, cancer, and care for newly adopted dogs. These pamphlets were distributed online, at the GRRIN dog fair, veterinary clinics, and the Nebraska Humane Society. Driven by a passion for animal welfare and personal experience as a dog owner, they continue to provide resources to help pet owners access reliable information.

Makayla Maxson Kearney

Literacy for All

For her project, Makayla Maxson partnered with the United Way of Kearney to improve literacy access in her community. She installed two Little Free Libraries with support from community donations and volunteers who helped build, install, and stock them. To ensure sustainability, the United Way will continue maintaining the libraries. Additionally, she created a twolevel patch program for Girl Scouts, teaching the importance of literacy and book care. The program is available to co-leaders on the Spirit of Nebraska website.

Girls earned their Highest Awards. Of those, 10 were Gold Awards.

Menstrual

Products in Elementary School Bathrooms

Katherine improved menstrual product accessibility in elementary schools. She placed bins stocked with pads in school bathrooms, allowing students to access them discreetly. To further support students, she provided school nurses with extra supplies and educational resources. Her initiative fosters a more supportive environment and helps those without access to menstrual products at home. To expand its impact, she created a website with information and resources to encourage awareness and action.

Through our partnership with Charles Schwab, and their generous support, we were able to offer financial literacy education to 197 attendees at the Omaha Cookie Rally and another 57 at the Unlocking Your Financial Superpower events.

Carolyn Sloan Spirit of Nebraska Award

The Carolyn Sloan Spirit of Nebraska Award, established in 1980 by the Guiding Star Council Board of Directors, honors the memory of Carolyn Sloan, a dedicated staff member who passed away in 1979. In 2010, the award’s scope was expanded statewide, with the first recipient recognized under its new name. This award celebrates Carolyn’s unwavering love and commitment to all girls.

The 2023-2024 recipient, Maria Reiter, received many nominations, one from Liliana Delgado said, “Maria’s influence extends far beyond scouting achievements; she has played an integral role in shaping the leader and woman I am today. Her impact is not only measured in badges earned or projects completed but in the lasting values, skills, and self-confidence instilled in each scout fortunate enough to be under her guidance. For Maria, scouting is not just an extracurricular activity but a lifelong commitment to nurturing and empowering the leaders of tomorrow.”

Girl Scouts Champions Inclusion

At Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska, we are committed to creating a culture of inclusion and belonging for every Girl Scout, volunteer, and staff member. Over the past year, we’ve made significant strides in advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) throughout our council and across Nebraska.

Celebrating Diversity in Programming

In November 2023, we launched the Discover Diversity program series in Omaha, offering engaging activities and discussions that celebrate various cultures and identities. Each program was led by individuals who identified as members of the specific communities being celebrated, to highlight authentic representation and meaningful learning experiences. This approach not only elevated the voices of those communities but also fostered valuable partnerships with organizations such as Inclusive Communities.

These programs, held in honor of Native American Heritage Month, Black History Month, Asian American-Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and Pride Month, have welcomed nearly 40 Girl Scouts and volunteers. To expand access statewide, we introduced a virtual option in 2024, giving even more Girl Scouts and volunteers the opportunity to participate and learn.

Pride and Disability Pride Participation

Our commitment to inclusivity extended to record-breaking participation in Pride celebrations in 2023 and 2024. In July 2023, 70 Girl Scouts, volunteers, and staff joined the Omaha Pride parade, making it our largest turnout yet. By summer 2024, we set a new milestone by participating in Pride parades in Lincoln, Hastings, Omaha, and Grand Island. For the first time, we also joined the Nebraska Disability Pride event in Lincoln, reinforcing our commitment to embracing and supporting individuals of all abilities.

Building DEI Awareness Internally

Over 57% of our staff embraced ongoing learning opportunities through robust DEI training sessions facilitated by our Civic Engagement Committee and community experts. Topics included Camp Equity for Youth, Intersectionality, Mental Health and Self-Care Awareness, LGBTQIA+ Inclusion, and more. Interactive add-on activities ensured these sessions remained engaging and impactful.

Amplifying DEI on a National Scale

Our Social Impact and Communications Coordinator, Demi Kulper, represented our council at the Edith Macy Conference Center in New York for the GSUSA DEI Conference. This transformative event brought together DEI specialists from councils across the country to collaborate on implementing GSUSA’s multi-year DEI strategy. The conference provided a platform for sharing successes and challenges, fostering connections, and generating innovative ideas to strengthen inclusion nationwide.

Recognized for Our Efforts

Our DEI initiatives have also received external recognition. A feature in the September/October 2023 edition of Metro Magazine highlighted our dedication to equity and our unwavering commitment to creating meaningful impact in Omaha and beyond. Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska remains steadfast in our mission to celebrate diversity, inspire inclusion, and create a safe and welcoming environment for all members of our community.

Juliette Gordon Low Society

Nearly 20 years ago, Anabeth Hormel Cox, alongside a former staff member, conceived the idea of honoring supporters who included Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska in their estate plans. This vision led to the creation of the annual Juliette Gordon Low Society Recognition Dinner. “I support the Juliette Gordon Low Society because I believe in the power of Planned Giving. Making plans to leave a part of one’s estate to help a remarkable nonprofit like Girl Scouting thrive into the future seems like an excellent investment. I’ve always loved what Girl Scouting can do for girls and young women, and it is important to me to see that positive influence prosper for my granddaughters and great granddaughters. It’s like leaving a part of me for their future success,” shared Anabeth.

40th Anniversary Celebration of Homestead Order of the Silver Trefoil, Chapter 10

Written by Jeanne Krenk, Chairman of the 40th Anniversary Celebration/Order of the Silver Trefoil

Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska Council, Homestead Order of the Silver Trefoil, Chapter 10, celebrated their 40th Anniversary at Hilltop House in Lincoln on Saturday, May 4, 2024.

The Homestead Order of the Silver Trefoil Chapter was organized on May 6, 1984, with 22 charter members. The purpose of the organization is to provide social opportunities as well as service and support to the Girl Scouting community.

To become a member of the Order of the Silver Trefoil, you need to be registered with Girls Scouts of the USA as a Lifetime Member with 25 years of membership or hold a 25 year Girl Scout membership. The Girl Scout Alums that attended the celebration have provided a combined 901 years of service to Girl Scouts through the years.

The Order of the Silver Trefoil is open to both men and women. Current members have served in a variety of roles in the Girl Scouting program including raised funds, volunteered with projects and programming, and supported preservation of the history and memorabilia of the Homestead Council and Homestead Chapter 10 Order of the Silver Trefoil.

Governor James Pillen signed an official Proclamation declaring May 4, 2024, as “Order of the Silver Trefoil Day” in the State of Nebraska, honoring and celebrating all Girl Scout Alums in the Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska Council.
