Girl Scouts can meet our clinical team, do mock X-rays, and then watch a first aid kit demonstration by a MedExpress team member. We can also bring the First Aid Kit demonstration to you! MedExpress can come to your summer camp, day camp, or scout meeting to do a First Aid Kit demonstration. Our First Aid and Safety Demonstration is a free community outreach program that teaches children about basic first aid and illness prevention. Our warm, friendly staff lead demonstrations that help you learn about preventing the spread of germs, why people get sick, and when to visit a doctor’s office or an urgent care center. Benefits of Girl Scouts
Who Can Become a Girl Scout? Any girl, kindergarten through 12th grade, can join Girl Scouts. You can join a troop or attend events as an individual. Annual, national membership dues for October 1, 2018 – September 30, 2019, are $25 for each girl and adult. Please allow 24 hours for your membership to process prior to registering for a program, camp, or training. Register online at GirlScoutsNebraska.org.

The Girl Scout Difference We all know the Girl Scout mission: building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. But how exactly does that happen? Our success comes from focusing on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Every Girl Scout activity, program, and award teaches girls to thrive in five key areas, providing the skills needed to succeed in school and in life!
The Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) Five Outcomes: SENSE OF SELF Girls have confidence in themselves and their abilities, and form positive identities.
POSITIVE VALUES Girls act ethically, honestly, and responsibly, and show concern for others.
CHALLENGE SEEKING Girls learn to take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from mistakes.
HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS Girls develop and maintain healthy relationships by resolving conflicts constructively and communicating their feelings directly.
COMMUNITY PROBLEM SOLVING
Girls desire to contribute to the world in purposeful and meaningful ways, learn how to identify problems in the community, and create “action plans” to solve th Girl Scouts are more likely than non-Girl Scouts to*: • Work collaboratively with others on group projects (86% vs. 61%) • Engage in hands-on activities and reflect on what worked/didn’t work (81% vs. 59%) • Take an active role in decision-making (80% vs. 51%) *Methodology: An online survey was conducted by the research firm Decision Analyst and consisted of 3014 girls (1507 Girl Scouts, 1507 non-Girl Scouts) aged 5-18. Quotas were set by age, race/ethnicity, region, and family income to achieve a nationally representative sample. Volunteer-to-Girl Ratios Girl Scout groups are large enough to provide a cooperative learning environment and small enough to allow individual development. Volunteer-to-girl ratios show the minimum number of volunteers needed to supervise a specific number of girls and ensure their safety and health.

Your group must have at least two unrelated, approved volunteers present at all times, plus additional volunteers as necessary for the group’s size, ages, and abilities. Any adult who supervises girls must be at least 18 years old and screened before volunteering. One troop co-leader in every group must be female. Extra Fun at Camp Maha Family Nights at Day Camp DBJCSAF 
Grades K-12, Families Thursdays, 5-7 p.m.
All family members who have a camper at a week-long day camp are invited and encouraged to attend Family Night. During Family Night, campers perform skits, shop at the Trading Post, sing songs, and have fun! Feel free to bring blankets and chairs for your family to use. You may bring your own picnic for dinner or order a dinner we supply for only $8 per person. Girl/Adult Cost: Free to attend; $8 per person if ordering meals.
Optional Overnight at Day Camp DBJ
Grades K-5 Thursday Nights
Day camp is a sampling of what resident camp life is like. This optional overnight introduces the next step: spending the night. Swimming, a campfire, and s’mores are all part of the experience. This option is available for girls attending any week-long day camp. Girl Cost: $28, includes dinner and snack Thursday, breakfast and lunch Friday. Maha Bus Schedules Girls attending Day Camp at Camp Maha MUST ride the bus to and from Camp Maha each day. Bus chaperones follow the health and safety standards, and policies of Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska. Parents/Guardians, you must be at the bus stop to pick up your daughter at the designated time. If you are not there to pick up at the designated time, your girl will be transported to the Omaha Service Center at 2121 S. 44th Street. Council staff will stay with your daughter until you arrive, but you must pick your daughter up by 6 p.m. (except Thursdays when girls not attending Family Night activities must be picked up by 5:30 p.m.)

Once you’ve registered for a My Summer Place package, you may attend the Open House where you will meet the staff, pick up calendars, complete required forms, and tour the site. My Summer Place Open House will be on Thursday, May 30, 2019, from 4-6 p.m. at Hanscom Park United Methodist Church, 4444 Frances Street. Breakfast is served at the site from 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. Girls should bring a sack lunch each day. A monthly calendar of field trips and activities will be provided. An additional $25 will be charged for girls who are not current Girl Scout members. Financial aid is available for up to 50% of the cost for those who qualify. All payments will be required regardless of attendance. *Parents/guardians may drop girls off as early as 7:30 a.m. Please note that the site does not open until 7:30 a.m. Girls must arrive at the site no later than 9 a.m. each day, as most of the programming begins at this time. Most structured activities, including badge work and field trips, happen between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Parents/guardians must inform My Summer Place staff if they need to drop-off or pick-up their daughter(s) during these hours. Pick-up begins at 4 p.m. Girls must be picked up by 5 p.m.** **My Summer Place will close at 5 p.m. daily. Take Action by Cleaning the World World Clean-Up Day What would happen if every person picked up at least one piece of litter on the same day? Around the globe, organizations and individuals will join forces for World Clean-Up Day (and National Clean-Up Day) on Saturday, September 21, to beautify our parks, trails, beaches, mountains, and open spaces. Now, imagine if every Girl Scout across Nebraska participated in World Clean-Up Day. What an incredible impact we would make! Gather your family, friends, and fellow Girl Scouts, and visit a park, lake, or any public area in your community to clean up litter and make the world a better place. This exclusive seminar will empower you to develop as a leader and change maker. It's for girls who love nature and want to make a meaningful impact on the environment. The seminar occurs at the same time as the Helen Storrow Seminars at Our Chalet, a World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) World Center in Switzerland. In addition to learning about and taking action on environmental issues, we will connect virtually with Girl Scouts in other countries and with the WAGGGS World Centers to discover how we are changing our communities. It’s a unique way to have an international experience without getting on a plane or applying for a visa. Who was Helen Storrow? She was an American Girl Scout leader, progressive thinker, philanthropist, and social reformer. In 1915 she met Juliette Gordon Low and became a key figure in Girl Scouts of the USA. Troop Travel Planning and going on a troop trip is an important part of the Girl Scout travel experience. Troop trips are a great foundation for future Girl Scout travel opportunities! Troops Must: • Consult the Volunteer Guide and Safety Activity Checkpoints for all planned activities. • Update Health History/Activity Permission Forms (lime green cards). • Make sure all attending volunteers are current Girl Scout members and have successfully completed a background screen. • Have all drivers complete the Driver Safety Form and read the Driver Guidelines. • Submit a Troop Trip Request Form and purchase Troop Travel Insurance. For additional resources and necessary forms, visit GirlScoutsNebraska.org. Additional insurance is required for trips lasting more than two nights, international travel, and activities including non-members. Council-Sponsored Trips With council-sponsored trips, you’ll journey to destinations across the country and beyond, and you’ll discover, connect, and take action all along the way! We offer many different experiences, so you’re sure to find a trip that is just right for you!
Independent Level Council-Sponsored Trips If you have some travel experience and are comfortable meeting new people and exploring new places, you may be ready for a more independent trip. Build confidence while navigating your ever-expanding world, all under the careful guidance of our Trip Advisors. To encourage independence, these trips are only open to girl participants. Adults interested in guiding girls through the travel process and serving as chaperones on independent-level trips are encouraged to apply as Trip Advisors.

Girl Scouts of the USA Destinations Continuing with the progression of travel experiences, Girl Scouts of the USA offers dozens of national and international Destinations trips each year for girls ages 11 and older. Each Destinations trip is planned and facilitated by a Girl Scout council or a Girl Scout partner, such as Outward Bound, and is exclusively for Girl Scouts. Girls must apply individually and be selected. If chosen, they will participate with other Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from across the globe. Destinations trips for the following two years are posted around midAugust at GirlScouts.org/travel, where girls can also submit their online applications.
Destinations Applications Girls may apply for up to four Destinations each year. Upon selection, they then have an opportunity to accept or decline each one. Completed applications, including essay questions and references, must be submitted online at GirlScouts.org by the deadlines below.
Application Deadlines December 1 – Round 1 applications due. • Tip: If your heart is set on a particular trip, apply during Round 1. Many trips fill up fast! February 15 – Round 2 applications due. Affording Your Trip Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska is committed to providing travel opportunities for girls and offers several financial resources to help make travel possible for all girls.
Cookie Dough and Nut Bucks Girls receive many benefits from participating in Product Programs, including the opportunity to earn Cookie Dough and Nut Bucks which may be used as payment for program fees, including payment toward council-sponsored trips and GSUSA Destinations. Cookie Dough and Nut Bucks must be redeemed prior to the expiration date on the card. You can now convert Cookie Dough and Nut Bucks to Travel Bucks! See below for more information.

GSUSA D-Pass Travelship Grant GSUSA provides D-Pass Travelship Grants to councils, for distribution to girls selected for Destinations trips. Girls from Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska may apply for D-Pass funding to help pay for their Destinations costs, including the cost of transportation to and from the location where the trip originates. Applications for D-Pass funding will be sent to girls selected for Destinations.
Tyler Cherrington Travel Scholarship The Tyler Cherrington Travel Scholarship is available to help you travel and explore! This scholarship (up to $500) is awarded to registered members of Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska, who would like to participate in a council-sponsored travel opportunity (excludes Girl Scouts of the USA Destination trips). This scholarship may not be used for any required deposits and all program registration dates must be met. Total funds available per year are $500. The number of scholarships awarded will be determined based upon the number of applications received. You may only apply for both Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska Financial Aid and the Tyler Cherrington Travel Scholarship for trips costing $1000 or more. Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska Financial Aid Parents may request Financial Aid for up to 50% of program fees for girls. Become a Trip Advisor! Trip Advisors provide supervision and guidance for independent level trips, while encouraging girls to gain confidence and develop leadership skills. Advisors must: • Be at least 25 years old • Be unrelated to any of the girl participants or other advisors • Be current Girl Scout members • Successfully complete a background screening • Meet volunteer training requirements Trip Advisors are expected to pay a portion of the trip fee (may vary by trip but usually 1/3 of the girl cost). The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. It recognizes girls in grades 9-12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through Take Action projects that have sustainable impact in their communities and beyond.

Girl Learning Opportunities Expand your leadership skills, meet new friends, and have fun! If you are interested in working with younger Girl Scouts, consider becoming a Program Aide or Counselor-in-Training!
Program Aide (PA) PAs can volunteer at day camps, council programs, or with a troop! This certification will prepare you to lead songs, games, ceremonies, and more with younger Girl Scouts! A Program Aide learning certificate and T-shirt are awarded at the end of the learning session. The PA pin and the Certified Program Aide certificate are awarded at the end of six PA experiences. To become a certified PA, you must:
• Be a registered Cadette, Senior, or Ambassador, 6th grade or above. • Attend a PA learning session. • Work directly with Daisies, Brownies, and/or Juniors through six different PA experiences. Counselor-inTraining (CIT) CITs volunteer at any of our six wonderful camp locations across the state and Hilltop House, too! If you love the outdoors and helping others, this is the opportunity for you! To become a certified CIT, you must:
• Be a registered Senior or Ambassador. • Be a certified Program Aide. • Attend a CIT camp learning session. • Work directly with younger Girl Scouts through two Spirit of Nebraska camp experiences. Each experience must include at least two days and one overnight.
You will receive a CIT T-shirt at the end of the camp learning session and the pin is awarded after completing the camp experiences.

Participate in Counselor in Training 2 and learn more advanced skills for working with girls in the outdoors. Registration and Information About the Girl’s Guide to Summer Fun This program guide is filled with events, travel programs, camps, resources, and helpful information. We mail one program guide per Girl Scout member household, so please share it with everyone in the house! A digital copy is also available on our website. Keep this program guide as a reference until the end of September 2019.
Who Can Participate? Girl Scout programs are for all girls, grades K-12. If you are not already a current member, just pay the annual $25 membership fee and let the fun begin! Please allow 24 hours for your membership to process prior to registering for a program, camp, or training.
How to Become a Girl Scout Member If you are not a current Girl Scout Member, simply register online at GirlScoutsNebraska.org. As a Girl Scout, you may choose to join a troop or create your own individual experience.
How to Register and Additional Information/Resources How to Register for Programs It couldn’t be easier! You can register for most programs 24/7, from the comfort of your own home, by registering online NOW! See below for registration and specific payment method options. All registrations must be paid in full before they are processed. Some programs allow registration with a deposit, in which case the balance must be paid in full by the stated payment deadline. Online – Secure your spot now by registering for programs ONLINE. Online payment methods are bank debit cards or credit cards (VISA, MasterCard, Discover, or AMEX). Go to GirlScoutsNebraska.org and click “Registration.” Fax – You may fax your program registration (available online). Accepted fax payment options are bank debit cards, credit cards, Cookie Dough, and Nut Bucks. Fax to: 402.558.8060 Mail – You may also mail your program registration. Confirmation of Registration Confirmation of registrations will be emailed to you when your payment is processed, if your current email address is on file. You will also receive an email reminder approximately one week prior to the program with additional information such as directions, what to wear, necessary forms, emergency contact numbers, etc.
Refund/Cancellation Policy* Refunds will be granted under the following circumstances: • The refund request is received before the program registration deadline. • Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska cancels the program. • The girl or family moves away from the area. • A physician confirms that the registrant is physically unable to participate. All requests for refunds/cancellations must be emailed to MemberSupport@girlscoutsnebraska.org or mailed to Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska, Attn: Registrations, 2121 S. 44th St., Omaha, NE 68105. Refund requests must include the participant’s name and address, the program name and date, and the reason for the refund/cancellation request. Allow up to six weeks for refunds. Refunds of $10 or more will be sent to whom the payment was received from. Refunds less than $10 will be held as a credit. Credits will be held for 60 days. If credits are not redeemed within 60 days, they will be considered a donation to Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska. *Travel Refunds-see policy on page 56. Membership fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
Attendee Health and Physical Forms A Girl Attendee Health Form is required for girls attending any Camp or Travel program. It must be completed by a parent/guardian and current within 12 months of the program date. Adult Attendee Health Forms are also required for all adults attending a Travel program. For girls attending overnight programs of three or more nights, a Physical Examination Form may also be required. The Physical Examination Form must be completed by a physician and be current within 12 months of the program date. Parents/guardians of girls attending summer camp programs complete Attendee Health and Physical Examination forms online via CampDoc.com. For travel and all other applicable non-camp programs, Attendee Health and Physical Examinations may be found on our website under Forms.
Safety Activity Checkpoints
Cell Phone Usage at Camp
When preparing for any activity with girls, begin with the Safety Activity Checkpoints found on our website under Volunteer Resources.
To preserve our camps’ unique, secure, and technology-free environment, we do not allow cell phones, iPod or MP3 players, radios, laptops, tablets, hand-held game systems, e-readers, or similar devices. Any electronic device sent with campers will be collected on the first day and returned at the end of camp. For picture taking, disposable cameras are recommended.
Background Screening As you register for programs, keep in mind that all volunteers working directly with girls, in any capacity, must be registered members and undergo a background screen.
