If you’re struggling with student loans, car payments or credit card debt, we know how overwhelming it can feel. Last year in the United States the average credit card interest rate was greater than 22%, the average balance was $6,501 and the total credit card debt had reached $1.13 trillion. With so many “debt relief” options out there, it’s hard to know which ones you should trust, and which ones are just a waste of time. Let’s take a closer look at one option that according to Ramsey Solutions is a bad idea - debt consolidation. Debt consolidation is where you combine your debts into one, giving you only one monthly payment making it seem like you only have one debt. You can consolidate your debt in different ways, such as a new credit card or various types of loans. If you choose to use loans, you may end up with extended payoff dates, fees, and often higher interest rates, and you may even be asked to put up collateral. Oh wow! The reality is that it will keep you in debt longer. Let’s look at credit card balance transfers. A balance transfer is when you take your debt balance from one or more credit cards and transfer it to another credit card; hopefully, one with a lower interest rate. This sounds like a great idea, especially if you are struggling with credit card debt. The reality is that all you did was move your money around, and you probably paid a balance transfer fee to do it. Those fees are between 3% and 5% of the balance being transferred. Ouch! This is just an example of one of the solutions that you may be considering; however, be cautious. The Bible says in Hebrews 12:11, “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” Choosing the right debt payoff strategy is half the battle. If you are serious about ditching debt, you need to change how you handle your money. Join the SpiritCHURCH Financial Peace small group for our next session of Financial Peace University in September to learn how to handle your money biblically.
