DR. THE HON. DAVID J. SAUL

Dr. the Hon. David J. Saul, a former Premier and Minister of Finance of Bermuda, started collecting Bermuda postage stamps on his native island when he was 14, spending his 2/- pocket money carefully. Over the decades, he judiciously built up a superb collection which Spink are delighted to offer in this auction. This collection includes two of Perot’s First Issue, one in black dated 1853, and one in red dated 1853. The latter, which once belonged to the late Sir Henry Tucker, is the left-hand example of the pair separated in 1934, the twin of which is now in the Royal Philatelic Collection. Dr. Saul also owns one of the four known examples of Perot’s Second Issue, once housed in the remarkable Morris Ludington collection, as well as one of the rare Thies Provisionals. During the famous Ludington sale, Dr. Saul also added to his collection both the block of six and block of four of the 1874 3d. on 1d. Provisionals. In more recent times he has also added a number of other notable Provisional errors including three 1875 1d. on 2d. no stop varieties and the 1865 imperforate 1d. rose-red unused and used, both considered the finest examples available. Also offered in this Spink auction are two of the 1901 ¼d. on 1d. “F” in “FARTHING” inserted by hand, of which only eight are known, together with a wonderful study of the King George V and King George VI high values with many of the rare head and frame plate varieties. In addition to his philatelic interest and political career, Dr. Saul has held many international business interests, including 30 years as a Director of the investment giant Fidelity International Ltd., and the global underwater exploration experts, Odyssey Marine Exploration Inc. A keen long distance runner, ocean kayaker, having been to the Arctic, the Antarctic, Tasmania, Alaska, Chile, Panama, etc., he is also an avid SCUBA diver. He also enjoys deer stalking and fly-fishing and sculptures in cedar wood. Dr. Saul is also a Fellow of the NY Explorers’ Club and holds a Ph.D. from Toronto University. In 2012, Dr. Saul was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Loughborough University for his services to International Business, Education, and Politics. Dr. Saul and his wife Christine live in Bermuda. They spend part of their lives on adventure holidays, having recently returned from the Galapagos Islands and, when not in Bermuda, they are at their “home in the woods” in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, which has a river with trout and salmon at their door. 3
