Hello Everyone!

Dianne’s Wee Bit

Welcome to our winter edition of the Spice London Newsletter and also to a brand New Year! The New Year is a busy time in Spice, planning ahead for our weekend events, finalising our two Spice London Ski trips and of-course welcoming lots of new Spice members. If you have joined recently a big welcome to Spice London! Booking your first few events may seem a bit daunting but relax, Spice members are very friendly and remember everyone was new once, why not take a look at our tips in this newsletter. We hope this newsletter will give you some great ideas of what to start with, you’ll soon be making lots of new Spice friends on our events. If there is anything you’re not sure about or have a question, please give us a call at the office. If you have picked up this newsletter at the Destinations show and were wondering just what Spice is all about, we hope this newsletter will give you a good idea of the kind of events we run (when you’re finished please pass it on to a friend!). Many of our events are seasonal and during the summer months expect to see Walking, Cycling, Sailing, Surfing and Narrow-boating weekends in our program, plus lots more outdoor activities such as Canoeing and our very popular and sociable Bunkhouse Weekends. It’s also worth taking a look at Spice UK who organise our overseas holiday program with lots of exciting destinations including Cuba & India and our unique Grand Canyon Rafting Expedition. Skiing is another very popular Spice holiday, Spice London normally runs two each season (now full) but take a look at Spice UK as they run many more and have a few last minute places. Back to the Spice London programme. The not to miss events for the next few months include an Easter bunkhouse weekend in Suffolk, a Foraging and Walking weekend in May, plus Ice Curling at England’s only purpose built Ice Curling Rink in Tunbridge Wells. We also have a few amazing shows including Sleeping Beauty in February at the Royal Opera House, in March we have Dreamgirls, The Glass Managerie, The Girls and Suspiciously Elvis at the Hippodrome. Some of our regulars are back including a Guided Climb over the O2 for an amazing view, Ronnie Scotts (always popular - book early) and some wine tasting, plus lots of meals and socials. We also have a couple of not to be missed fun weekends our Butlin’s Ultimate 80’s party this one is only for serious Spice party animals don’t expect much sleep on this fun packed weekend! Our Social evenings are always worth dropping into we hold them in Central London, Richmond, St Albans, Guildford, Sevenoaks, Bromley, Horsham & Upminster. We have now added another in Epsom. So if live nearby do drop in. They are also an opportunity for those thinking about joining us to drop in and find out more. With best wishes for the New Year…

Have fun on the events… Dianne Spice members at the Taj Mahal in October One of Spice’s amazing holidays The Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It was built 1632-1653, it looks like they haven’t quite finished the right tower yet!

The Cabinet’s underground headquarters included living quarters for government ministers and military leaders, and the Cabinet Room where many strategic decisions were taken. Spice London - White Knight and Good Fairy Fortnight

Date: Mon 13th Feb 2017 - Mon 27th Feb 2017 Place: London and South East areas Cost: £17.50 Includes: final reveal buffet supper on 27th February 2017 Extras: Drinks Please Note: For this event to be a success you need to commit to attending the social on 27.02.17 (imagine the disappointment if someone’s White Knight / Good Fairly doesn’t come to the ‘big reveal’) so please make sure you can attend this when signing up for this event. Good Fairies and White Knights still exist - at least in Spice and your very own Good Fairy or White Knight is out there somewhere. Your Good Fairy or White Knight will put a little magic into day to day living, turning you into a VIP for a fortnight. There is an added twist to the fun ... you will have no idea who is sending your gifts and surprises. Our finale social is great fun as this is when all is revealed, and you discover who's been making your life pleasant and exciting for the last 14 days. We all love to give as well as receive, and while you're getting all this attention you'll have the chance to be a Good Fairy or White Knight too! This is your opportunity to "make someone's day" - or evening, or morning by leaving an unexpected little message, or a simple gift, turning them into a VIP with your surprises and good deeds. It’s a fantastic fortnight of fun, with everyone creating some 'magic' with a bit of imagination and a sense of commitment.

The event works very simply - when you book this event you'll become a Good Fairy or White Knight to one other person. This person is your VIP for the fortnight and it's up to you to come up with some nice surprises for him or her. You in turn will have nice things done for you by your Good Fairy or White Knight, who is a completely different person taking part in the event i.e....'A' is Good Fairy to 'B'....who is GF to 'C'...who is GF to 'D'...etc. Everyone is both a VIP and a Good Fairy/White Knight, giving and receiving surprises. It's important to remember that your good deeds and special surprises needn't cost a lot if anything, in fact you should keep expenditure to a pound or two... it's not the amount of money you spend but the thought that goes into it. E.g. an old roll of wallpaper makes a great banner to felt tip a message on! One word of warning, you should not do anything to embarrass or offend or that is illegal! It should be nice surprises! It needn't take lots of time, but you should be prepared to think of at least 4 surprises, and to have one ready for the start of the fortnight so your VIP gets a surprise straight away. What surprises you come up with are up to you - treats, favours, entertainment - anything which will bring a bit of fun and frivolity into your VIP's life - make them feel someone is thinking of them and wishing them well. (Meanwhile your Good Fairy or White Knight will be doing the same for you!) It could be decorating their car, having a cake delivered, leaving a nice message on the answering machine, writing a poem, finding out what Spice events they are booked on and surprising them.....? You'll need to let us know a bit about yourself to help your Good Fairy or White Knight give you surprises that you'll like, your VIP will also send us information to help you give them lots of fun and surprises that they'll appreciate. When you register for this event you must send in a note giving us the following details which will be passed on to your Knight/ Fairy: Please see our web-site for more information as to exactly how this event works.

Not only is Borrowdale one of the most popular destinations that WalkWise run, with an excellent centre, superb food and a setting amongst some of England's most spectacular mountains, amazing lakes and beautiful valley. This variety of scenery allows us to create a wonderful array of walking programmes from gentle wanders through the valleys to challenging mountain hikes. But the Wobbly Walking has even more with a themed dinner on the Saturday night, following which you will experience a fun and educational evening of wine tasting! The WalkWise 'Wobbly' Walking Programme: Wobbly walking offers a great weekend with a usual WalkWise-style walking programme on the Saturday and Sunday, and the added bonus of wine tasting on the Saturday evening! For this ‘Wobbly’ part on the Saturday night, there will be a themed dinner based on the wine’s country of origin. After dinner there will be a chance to learn about the wines, why they were chosen and of course to sample a number of wines from the chosen country! This year Ellie Mathew’s will be our wine tutor and her chosen country is Chile! Meanwhile for the gentler walkers there are some beautiful lower fells that can be reached without too much effort: Castle Crag, Kings How and Bessy Boot are all wonderful viewpoints. Styhead Pass and Sprinkling Tarn lie at the very heart of the most spectacular mountains in England, and there is also the dramatic scenery of Dale Head Tarn and the Newlands valley. Spice Dines In the Dark!

Date: Saturday 18th February 2017 Place: Dans Le Noir, 30/31 Clerkenwell Green, London (EC1R 0DU) Meet in the bar - Spice sign 7pm Cost: £56 Includes: 2 course surprise menu, (starter and main or main course and dessert) service Host Extras: Drinks Dans le Noir is a dining establishment that blows all the rules of etiquette out of its non-existent windows. Groups of strangers alike have been gathering nightly in this Farringdon hot spot since its opening, for a multi-sensory experience that actually works by eliminating your most precious one, Sight. With similar operations in Paris and Zurich, the concept of dining in the dark was designed initially to create awareness of disability. All the waiters at Dans le Noir are either blind or partially sighted. We will meet in the lounge of Dans le Noir and will go together into the restaurant. No doubt this will be instantly terrifying as you will be able to hear the scrapes of cutlery on china and the chatter of our dining companions but you won’t know if you are about to walk into their tables! Dining out at Dans le Noir changes the way we dine. There are no distractions and there is nothing else to divert your attention so you think about your food, which is a very unusual experience because you can’t see what you are eating. We have opted for a two-course surprise menu, which means you could think you are eating mashed potato and find out it is hummus. The pork might be veal and the slices of warm baked apples sliding across your tongue, which taste delicious, are actually peaches. If you dine out at Dane le Noir just once, the chances are you’ll walk away appreciating what a different world we live in.

With the natural ability of the car taken for granted and with our instructor sitting beside you, it will not be long before that seemingly impossible climb may be achieved. Following our visit we will then head off for a 1 course lunch at Pizza Express. The game is that you interrupt a family of silk-weavers named Jervis. They can still sometimes be heard but seem always to be just out of sight. As you journey off in this SILENT tour through the ten rooms, each lit by candlelight you receive a number of stimulations to your senses. It is the smell of food that first aligns your imagination with the faces around you in portraits then.... Mr Jervis’s wig surely not the very same one that hangs over the back of his chair? His meal is only half eaten, did he abandon it when he heard us arrive? Dennis Sever was an artist who used his imagination as his canvas and who lived in the house in much the same way as its th original occupants might have done in the early 18 century. He lived in the house for his own personal enjoyment but through this he has created an extraordinary experience. After almost twenty years this experience ranks as one of the rarest in the world. Sharing what Dennis Sever found and created is what a visit to the house is all about. The warm candlelit rooms captures the old masters, the creak of footsteps, whispers and opening doors, texture, different smells and the ticking and chiming of clocks – its spellbinding but the motto of the house is that you either see it or you don’t!

The first of Britain’s National Parks, it covers 542 square miles taking in, to the north, the wild Dark Peak where Curlews cry across desolate peat bogs and the more pastoral White Peak to the south west. In terms of the mighty impressive walking with three days to go at we shall experience two of the most pleasing things the Peak District has to offer; Dales and Rivers. The WalkWise Walking Programme: Ilam Hall, Hamps Valley & Mere Hill From Ilam Park we cross the river and head up and over the steep Mere Hill for envious views over the impressive White Peak countryside. For Dovedale & Wetton we can leave from the house: Heading northwards we pass by fantastic rock formations such as the Twelve Apostles, Reynard’s Cave and the Tissington Spires! Accommodation: Surrounded by pretty countryside and set in a charming village location this comfortable Country House provides a perfect base for our weekend. From here we shall have our every need catered for. All the bedrooms have an individual layout and character but all have TV with digital radio, hair dryer and complimentary tea and coffee making facilities. For our complete relaxation the spacious public rooms lead to a licenced bar which in turn opens onto a terrace with an aspect enjoying a delightful view of the surrounding countryside. Wi-Fi in all public areas and a proper boot and drying room to cater for any type of Bank Holiday weather.

Wilderness and Foraging Bunkhouse Weekend

Fri 5th May 2017 - Sun 7th May 2017 YHA Tanners Hatch, Dorking, Surrey (RH5 6SR) Arrive from 4.00pm check out 12 noon £140 Sharing (Deposit £20) Includes: 2 nights bunkhouse exclusive hire for Spice, foraging experience with foraging expert, 2 breakfasts and 2 evening meals and Spice Host throughout Extras: Drinks - Bring Your Own

This picturesque and eco-friendly hostel with plenty of charm and character in National Trust woodland is a perfect country retreat close to London. A haven of peace and tranquility, you can relax and escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. For this weekend we are walking and foraging in the woods for a real wilderness experience. We will also cook a meal with the mushrooms, berries and any other food we can find. We will have a foraging expert from Wildfood Foraging to give us a talk on the rules of foraging before we set off into the countryside to identify the edible plants and mushrooms that grow in this area. We will learn what we can and cannot eat so that we can enhance our walks and diets. Much of what we find when foraging would be considered food for fine dining so why not learn how to do it for free. YHA Tanners Hatch has low-beamed ceilings throughout with beds arranged across 3 bedrooms (bunk beds). All bed linen is provided. There is a lovely lounge to enjoy the evenings with sofas and armchairs or we can sit in the lovely garden over a glass of wine or two. There is also a dining room with tables and wooden benches. There are sinks in the bedrooms but the toilets and showers are close by in a separate building outside. Please bring your own towels. There are two fire pits on site which means we can collect our own wood and build a real campfire. Around this area there is plenty of walking along the South Downs, and there are many cycling tracks if you wanted to bring a bike (or we can hire). Polesden Lacey and Denbies Wine Estate are close by and worth a visit on Sunday with a pub lunch perhaps, before heading for home. The plan for the weekend goes like this: Meet on the Friday evening, and we will have some supper and socialise over drinks. On Saturday morning we will have breakfast which will include a selection of items with a few hot options such as bacon and sausage butties, cereals, yoghurts, fruit and tea/coffee. Then we will relax in the garden with the papers or go for a stroll until our Foraging Expert arrives to start our foraging experience. After the talk we will head out for a walk and be out for a 2/3 hours before returning to the hostel to cook what we have found out foraging. Saturday evening we eat at the hostel and if the weather is nice we can have a BBQ. On Sunday morning there will be a guided walk organised or we can explore the area by visiting one of the local attractions.
