What is Northeast Harvest?

Northeast Harvest Agriculture Profile » Our region in Essex and Middlesex counties has 1,261 FARMS and stewarding over 50,627 ACRES of land.

» The value of direct NORTHEAST HARVEST is a Buy Local Program representing almost 400 farms in Essex and Middlesex counties and is supported by the Essex Agricultural Society and MDAR. We connect the farmers with the consumers and strengthens farms in northeast Massachusetts and contributes to the growth of the local food economy. We work in collaboration with many other organizations as well as individual growers and agricultural producers to highlight the number and variety of farms and food products that are available in northeast Massachusetts.

Our mission is to help you discover, enjoy and support the farmers and local agriculture in Essex and Middlesex Counties, Massachusetts.

It’s important to us that you can easily access information about our local farms and farmers markets to preserve and expand access to local food in our region. We are dedicated to inform and educate northeastern Massachusetts about the importance of local food and sustainable farming to our community. We teach our youth and general community about the importance of buying local and where our food comes from on a farm. We also serve our farmers as a resource and provide workshops to help better their farm and increase their business. We promote and market our local farms to increase income of agriculture products and increase local food economy revenue.

What is Buy Local?

REGIONAL BUY LOCAL groups connect the farmer to consumers in their local communities. Buy Local groups promote locally grown food and their local farms.

In Massachusetts we have ten Buy Local groups working together to promote and increase local food economy. Together, we can increase Massachusetts local food economy and increase awareness about agriculture in our state.

» F arms in our counties average 40 ACRES. The number of farms has increased by 30 since 2007. However, the average farm size has decreased by 10 ACRES.

In 1955 they stopped raising chickens and focused on producing fruits and vegetables. (They’ve ended classes for the fall and winter, but plan to start again in May.) In the summer they offer agricultural tours on baling hay.

In the fall they have pumpkin picking tours. All tours include a fun hay ride.

The farm consists of 1,000acre pastoral landscape. Cows graze out on pasture and are milked each morning and afternoon – their milk is used to make aged and fresh cheeses on-site. Fresh eggs are collected daily from the chicken “tractor” that houses our chickens, while our free-range grass-fed beef herd grazes in the Great Pasture. During the haying season, the farm produces thousands of bales of hay annually to feed the livestock, and all farm waste is composted and turned out on our fields. Hundreds of families visit the farm during the growing season to pick their own

8. Preserves Genetic Diversity. Local Farms grow a variety of plant species to make a longer season and give you a variety of options when buying your produce. Large chain business don’t do this and only have a few varieties in a large scale production. Having genetic diversity is important to a crop so it can easily adapt to changing environments.

9. Health. Buying local brings you the freshest food around which you need for a healthy diet. Processed foods and food from large industrial farms often contain pesticides, preservatives, genetically modified ingredients, and have fewer nutrients your body needs.

10. Preserves Farmland. Buying local will preserve our Farms, and keeps them in business and producing produce for our local community.

Buying Local in Massachusetts THE ECONOMY IS ALWAYS a big topic of discussion. How do we continue to grow our economy, and keep profits growing in our local economy?

Money is like our blood we need it to continuously be circulating, buying and profiting. If we want to keep money in our local environment, the solution is quite simple. Buy Local. Support your local community by buying at farm stands, farmers’ markets, local boutiques, and local restaurants. By consuming at these outlets, you are consuming at least 95% American made goods. Spend the extra money to help your neighbor and keep profits close to home.

In the end the extra dollar you spend just grows your community, which increases your property value and your prosperity.

Now as a Massachusetts native, how can we make a difference in

Massachusetts and increase our local economy? I propose we only consume local foods. What would it take to only consume locally grown food from Massachusetts farms and fisheries? Could we consume only Massachusetts produced food yearround and have a healthy sustainable diet?

For a healthy diet we must consume from the 5 food groups; vegetables, fruit, grains, protein, and dairy.

Massachusetts produces food for all 5 food groups. So, it is possible to consume a daily diet by only eating local sourced food. In Massachusetts there are many dairy farmers producing milk for our various dairy products.

We have farmers and fisherman who produce protein for us such as meat, chicken, eggs, turkey, and seafood.

We have few farms in that grow grain, but many farms that grow

potatoes which is a starch and can be substitute for grains. Massachusetts produces an abundance of fruit and vegetables; they specialize in cranberries, sweet corn, and apples.

Is it possible to do this year-round?

Massachusetts has four seasons climate. Which means fruit and vegetables can only be produced seasonally.

Therefore, it would be nearly impossible to consume a healthy sustainable diet, eating all 5 food groups with only consuming Massachusetts food in the off season. One could survive with consuming only locally sourced food year-round, but they would be lacking essential vitamins and minerals that we get from our fruit and vegetables that keep us healthy.

APPLE GOUDA STUFFED CHICKEN BREASTS WITH SMOKY ROASTED SWEET POTATOES INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

FOR CHICKEN:

1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.

2 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts (mine were 10 ounces each – shoot for 4-6 ounces per serving) 11/2 ounces gouda cheese, thinly sliced 1/2 large apple, thinly sliced (I used Honeycrisp – any firm apple will work) 1

teaspoon olive oil for chicken

1 teaspoon fresh thyme, more as desired for garnish 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 fresh ground pepper

FOR SWEET POTATOES: 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and diced 1

tablespoon olive oil

2. Spray a large baking dish or sheet pan with nonstick cooking spray. Split each chicken breast across but not through and open like a book (be careful, you can easily cut yourself doing this!). This is also known as butterflying. On one side of the chicken, lay out 7-8 thin apple slices followed by 4-5 slices of cheese. Sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme. Fold over and drizzle with 1/2 teaspoon olive oil. Sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.

3. Place the chicken breast on sheet pan and top with another sprig of fresh thyme if desired.

4. In a bowl, mix diced sweet potatoes with olive oil, smoked paprika, 1 teaspoon thyme leaves and sea salt until evenly coated. Arrange sweet potatoes in a single layer around chicken breasts.

6. Bake for 20 minutes and then stir sweet potatoes.

7. Continue to bake until the juices run clear from chicken and internal temperature of chicken registers at 165 degrees, about 10 additional minutes. Sweet potatoes should be fork tender.

All About CSA What is CSA? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. CSA is an alternative, locally based economic model of agriculture and food distribution. Its purpose is to allow people to have direct access to quality fresh produce grown locally by regional farmers. When you become a CSA member, you are purchasing a share of vegetables from a local CSA affiliated farm. The CSA’s focus is on the production of high quality foods for a local community. Community Supported Agriculture farms in the United States emphasize community and local produce, shared subscriptions sold prior to the growing season and weekly deliveries to members/subscribers.

How Does a CSA Work CSA Members pay at the beginning of the growing season for a share of the harvest at their local CSA affiliated farm.

Once the growing season is underway, members receive shares of produce.

Some CSA services allow for additional farm products like eggs, honey, fruit, flowers and meat. There are a few CSAs that exchange labor in lieu of payment for a share of the produce. Share prices vary from each CSA but generally shares are sold as full shares or half shares. Share prices depend on costs of production, market forces as well as income level of the particular CSA community. Shares are distributed in different ways but most often are distributed weekly. Most CSAs allow share pick up at the farm and some farms have a drop off at a community center. CSA farms often use organic and biodynamic farming methods with a great degree of involvement from consumers. Utilizing this method has enhanced a strong relationship between the consumer and farmer. Farmers rely on their members and subscribers for learning the needs of the community.

In 1965, these women started a program that was cooperative relationship in which local farmers were supported by consumers on a yearly basis.

At the same time, in Europe a similar model was developed by cooperative farmers with an emphasis on biodynamic farming. In 1984, Jan Vander Tuin of Switzerland brought the concept of CSA to North America. In fact, the term “Community Supported Agriculture” was invented by Jan Vander Tuin. Along with Robyn Van En, from Indian Line Farm in South Egremont, MA, Vander Tuin started the first season of CSA began bringing the “share the harvest” concept to the community.

The Indian Line Farm CSA grew quickly from its original 30 members to 150 members. Today, the CSA model reaches across the United States with more 12,549 CSA farms nationwide. Currently, there are 4 main types of CSAs:

All About HIP What is HIP? The Healthy Incentives Program, also known as HIP, can help you buy more locally grown fruits and vegetables. When you buy fruits and vegetables with SNAP at participating farmers’ markets, mobile markets, farm stands or Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm share programs, you will earn extra money on your SNAP/EBT card. The Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) is a statewide program. If you spend your SNAP dollars at a participating retailer, you can earn extra benefits (up to $40/month for a household of 1-2 people, $60/month for a household of 3-5 people, and $80/month for a household of 6+ people).

How does HIP work?

SNAP (formerly Food Stamp) dollars spent on eligible fruits and vegetables at participating farmers’ markets, mobile markets, farm stands and CSA farm share programs can earn HIP benefits up to a maximum monthly allowance based on the size of your household—you cannot earn HIP by shopping at a grocery store.

You will need to spend SNAP dollars on fruits and vegetables to earn HIP. The benefit is added directly back to your SNAP/EBT card and can be used towards any future SNAP eligible purchase.

What is the maximum HIP benefit I can earn each month?

Depending on the size of your household, you can earn up to an additional: • $40 FOR 1-2 MEMBER HOUSEHOLDS • $60 FOR 3-5 MEMBER HOUSEHOLDS • $80 FOR 6+ MEMBER HOUSEHOLDS per month on top of your regular monthly benefits.

Where can I earn HIP benefits?

You can earn HIP by shopping at participating farmers markets, mobile markets, farm stands and CSA farm share programs throughout the state, and buying HIP eligible fruits and vegetables. HIP benefits cannot be earned at other food stores such as supermarkets, convenience stores; however you can spend your earned HIP benefit at these locations on any future SNAP purchase. Availability of HIP at farmers’ markets and farm stands is currently limited, but is expanding rapidly—check MassGrown’s HIP map often or call Project Bread’s FoodSource Hotline at 1-800-645-8333 to find farmers’ markets, farm stands, mobile markets, and CSAs near you that can currently process HIP.

What foods can I buy to earn HIP? HIP eligible foods are fresh, canned, dried and frozen fruits and vegetables without added sugar, salt, fats or oils.

For example, onions, pears, broccoli, fresh herbs, canned tomatoes, applesauce, frozen berries, and dried mushrooms, are all HIP foods. Food items that do not qualify include vegetable and fruit juices (including apple cider), creamed or sauced vegetables, dried spices and herbs. Meet Nellie!

MY NAME IS NELLIE. I was born on September 1, 2015. Within the first hour I moved to my new home which was a hutch. Today I got my identification ear tag. This will have my number, my birthdate, and my dam’s (Mother) name.

My Mother went back to the herd, so she can produce milk for the farmer and also for me. As a baby calf, I was first fed colostrum which is the milk that came from my Mom. This will give me strong antibodies so I won’t get sick.

I was fed my Mother’s milk twice a day for the next 2-3 days and a milk replacer after that.

After 3 days, I received grain and at 6 weeks, I ate 1-2 lbs. of grain a day. I have weaned myself off milk and now drink water. I grow about 1.8 lbs. a day.

When I was 2 months old my farmer fed me hay for the first time – it was delicious! When I was 3 months old, my farmer dehorned me, so I could move to a pen with other calves my own age.

When I weighed about 800 lbs. I was ready to have my own baby calf. It is important that I have a calf, so I can start producing milk for my farmer.

After having my first calf, I was moved to the milking herd.

When my milk production drops, I will be bred again to have another calf, so I can continue to produce milk for my farmer.

I should have a calf every year to optimize my milk production.

I love being a cow and providing the world with dairy!

What is aquaculture?

AQUACULTURE IS KNOWN as fish or shellfish farming. They breed, rear, and harvest plants and animals in all types of water environments such as ponds, rivers, lakes and oceans.

Aquaculture produces food fish, sport fish, bait fish, ornamental fish, crustaceans, mollusks, algae, sea vegetables, and fish eggs.

There is both marine aquaculture and freshwater aquaculture. Marine Aquaculture contributes to seafood supply and supports commercial fisheries. Aquaculture helps produce more seafood supplies for commercial fishermen to continue to fish, which helps maintain economic activity in coastal communities.

Freshwater Aquaculture contributes to produce species that are native to rivers, lakes, and streams. They typ-

ically produce catfish, trout, tilapia, and bass.

Aquaculture is a viable method to produce seafood, since overfishing has been an issue, it’s a growing resolution. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is a leading agency on aquaculture. They provide federal guidance and financial aid to help develop aquaculture regulations and the physical systems.

It’s so important that we continue to grow aquaculture to preserve our marine life. Aquaculture enhances wild fish, shellfish, and plants that we can harvest. It also restores threatened and endangers aquatic species.

Without aquaculture commercial fishermen would be out of jobs and there would be no more seafood on our dinner tables because fish and

other seafood would become extinct.

In Massachusetts the aquaculture industry is very diverse compared to the agriculture industry. Since 1970 aquaculture has grown to include more than 15 species of fish and shellfish that are cultivated. There are many institutions involved in the aquaculture industry. Most aquaculture in Massachusetts occurs on the South Shore, Cape Cod, Islands, and South Coast area. There are only a few shellfish growers on the North Shore, in the Ipswich, Gloucester, Rowley area. The fishing industry is so important to our Massachusetts economy, without it thousands will lose jobs. We need to increase marine aquaculture in northeast Massachusetts to ensure the commercial fishing industry doesn’t collapse.

Agricultural Fairs AGRICULTURAL FAIRS have been running for decades. Their purpose is to bring community members together, and celebrate communities local harvest, livestock, crafts, baked goods and much more. Agricultural Fairs are important asset to our communities and have a huge education component. It exposes and teach community members who have never stepped foot on a farm about agriculture.

The best part of the agricultural fairs is seeing all the work our community members did whether its crafts or poultry, it’s an opportunity to gawk at each other’s exhibits and appreciate what our counties community members can do. Unfortunately, throughout the years there has been a decrease in exhibitors in all departments. Community members for some reason aren’t showing in exhibits any more. The purpose of the fair is to come and see these great exhibits people in our community do. If we don’t have great exhibits eventually the fair will become obsolete. We need our amazing community members to come out of the woodworks and show an educate about agriculture.

Northeast Harvest counties have two popular agriculture fairs our community members love to visit, the Middlesex County 4-H Fair and the Topsfield Fair which is in Essex county. Both our fairs have been striving for years and have educated our communities about our local agriculture and agricultural history.

Although we have noticed a decrease in exhibitors here, less community members are entering in agricultural exhibits. It’s important we start encouraging our neighbors who have backyard chicken coops to enter, or even a friend who has excellent baking skills to enter the pie making contests. Their work is important to our community and we want them to demonstrate their excellence.

The Topsfield Fair will celebrate it's 200th anniversary in 2018.

The Middlesex County 4-H Fair, Inc. is a non-profit organization (501c) run entirely by volunteers. The Fair is an agricultural, non-commercial, youth fair that runs for 3 days, and all of exhibitors are members of 4-H Clubs in Middlesex County. Only 4-H members exhibit in this fair, which promotes community members to join 4-H.

The Topsfield Fair is a non-profit organization, that runs an eleven-day agricultural fair. It is a quintessential country fair displaying traditional agriculture, big entertainment, rides, games, shopping, and great food. All community members are eligible to exhibit in this fair. What is Agritourism?

AGRITOURISM IS WHERE agriculture and tourism intersect. It can encompass various activities from a simple farm tour to an elegant farmto-table dinner. In Massachusetts, over 400 farm activities are open to the public. Our local farms offer unique hands-on experiences to see, feel, and taste agriculture at its source.

Agritourism is a big market opportunity for our farmers. This is a growing market where farms can provide an experience for our local community members to come visit their farm and take part in exciting agriculture activities that is fun for all family members. Whether it’s a day in the fields participating in pick-your-own or getting lost in a corn maze, family’s love to come and enjoy a day at the farm. Not only is it a great family fun day but it also is an opportunity to educate the public about agriculture.

Participating in these events exposes and engages community members to agriculture that they would never be exposed to in their everyday life.

There are so many different agritourism events that farms are intertwining into their business. Visitors can pick pumpkins, apples, cherries, and other produce; or they can navigate corn mazes. Some offer hayrides, barnyard animal visits, and ice-cream treats from a local dairy to the top of their “fun-things-to-do” lists. Visitors might tour a vineyard, explore winemaking, or discuss the process of transforming grapes into high-quality wines. By taking a farm tour, a younger guest would learn that milk does not originate in a plastic container, but from a cow on a farm! Tours of farm fields have enabled many people to realize that potatoes grow underground, and apples grows on a tree.

In the Northeast Harvest region, we have many farms that are engaging in agritourism. Marini Farm in Essex county has huge agritourism operation, offering a corn maze, hayrides, barn yard farm animals, duck races,

apple cannons and many more farm attractions for the family. It attracts many visitors to their farm which in effect increases sales. Honey Pot Hill Orchards in Middlesex county is another farm in the Northeast Harvest who has utilized agritourism at their farm. They offer pick your own for apples, pears, and blueberries, and other activities such as farm animals, hayrides, and hedge mazes. We have farms that have unique agritourism attractions, such as Colby Farm located in Newbury MA. They grow an enormous sunflower field and it attracts visitors from across the country, just to get glimpse of the fields and have a perfect photo opt.

Whether it is corn mazes or farm animals, agritourism is a growing market at our farms. It helps bring visitors to the farm and grows revenue. This will be a growing market in our farms and we predict our large farms will integrate agritourism into their business plan to increase their farm revenue.
