Ri hy Son SPE‐PB Chairman 2021‐2022 Produc on Engineer SM Energy A good captain and crew can steer a ship through troubled waters. We owe much apprecia on and congratula ons to our sec on leadership and volunteers for their service this past year. Naviga ng through a pandemic and accomplishing all their planned goals is no small feat. That success earned our sec on the 2021 Sec on Excellence Award. The way ahead this year will focus on strengthening those new ini a ves and study groups this term. Thank you, for the opportunity to serve as the 2021‐2022 SPE Permian Basin Chairman. If we haven’t met yet, here’s my CliffsNotes. I was born in Dallas, TX to Mr. and Mrs. Son in ‘93. As a kid I always wanted to be an archeologist. Think of digging in the Egyp an desert or Indiana Jones. My dad’s a big Harrison Ford/ Tom Clancy guy – that’s why my brother’s name is Ryan. Fast forward. A&M and the oilfield was like PB&J. A good idea. I graduated in ’16 studying PETE and packed my bags headed out west. My short story is only one of 38+ be er ones. Best part? There’s a face and name behind each of them. Look at the board on Page 24. This is a small oilfield. You know us. We’ve felt the same bone dry or chilling weather… sipped that 3rd pot of Folgers… or savored that WTX sunset. Your stay in the Permian may be for 4 days or 40 years. We hope each moment feels like home. Community is important. We lost a piece of that over the past 12 months. But we’re energized and excited to rebuild and grow with you. Remember we’re value based and data driven too. We’ve dug into our membership data and will con nue to track and analyze it to be er serve you. Special thanks to our talented member, Sara Foster, for this work. You’ll see ~33% of our operator membership across young/senior professionals are focused in produc on/ops. Service side is ~40% YP comple ons and >50% produc on/ops for SPs (although likely skewed by the “other” category).

What type of decisions do we make with this? Here are a few examples. Star ng up a produc on and facili es study group was one. Secondly, provide ar ficial li topics as value adding refreshers or promising technologies with case studies. Thirdly, target membership growth among produc on services to complement the high (Con nued on Next Page)

operator presence. What about comple ons? Offer hybrid mee ng op ons for field engineers unable to a end in person is a start. Collect valuable mee ng nuggets as a newsle er and distribute to interested members… You can see a pa ern here. A erwards, analyze these methods, rinse, and repeat. Expect this type of strategy moving forward. Our 4 main goals this term are as follows; with the ques ons we plan to answer: 1. Develop Member Analy cs – What’s the health and growth of the sec on? 2. Generate Interest – What do members care about? 3. Incen vize Membership – What’s the value for members and call to ac on? 4. Support a UTPB Fall Petroleum Career Fair Event – We added 138 Trans‐Pecos members and an en re university (UTPB) in 2019 to our sec on. Integra on con nues into year 3. UTPB plans to host this event on September 9th. Contact Bre Keitges for addi onal details! Your feedback is always welcome and encouraged. If any of these ini a ves resonate with you, contact us. You’ll make a difference in this community. Above all, please remember one thing. You can always count on at least one friend out west. ‐RLS

30th Annual SPE Permian Basin Golf Tournament

Oil and Gas Professional: Once again it is me for the Society of Petroleum Engineers Annual Permian Basin Golf Tournament. The Golf Tournament is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 10th, 2021, at the Hogan Park Golf Course in Midland. 2019 tournament was a huge success. We had 500 players represen ng 175 different companies par cipate, making it one of the premier golf events in the Basin. This tournament has historically been one of the primary sources of funds for the Permian Basin SPE Scholarship Fund. We are honored to say that due to of our golf tournament more than $1,000,000 in scholarships has been awarded from the Permian Basin Sec on of SPE to local students. In 2019, we awarded a total of $102,000 in scholarships to 26 college students from our immediate area seeking to enter into the petroleum industry. This was only possible due the terrific support of last year's sponsors. This includes the Ed Runyan $15,000, Dick Pren ce, Hoxie Smith, T Sco Hickman, Stephen Melzer, and the new Libby Einhorn $5000 scholarship awards. A ached you will find a list of possible sponsorship levels. Please look over the different op ons available and feel free to call if you have any ques ons. In addi on to the varying sponsorship levels, we are solici ng Di y Bags and Door Prizes items. Our goal is to have 500 par cipants so please take that into account when considering di y bag items (550 needed). If you are interested in dona ng any items or services, please give me a call. This is one of the top tournaments each year in the Permian Basin and we truly hope that you and your company choose to be part of it with the Permian Basin Sec on of the SPE. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR SUPPORT
