Greetings from the gutter Friðgeir Helgason was born on the small island of Vestmannaeyjar off the south coast of Iceland. In 2004, Friðgeir’s personal life collapsed – homeless and addicted – he was living in a cardboard box on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. He checked himself into the Midnight Mission. During his stay at the Mission, he returned to school, studying Cinematography at Los Angeles City College. During a requisite Beginning Photography Class, Friðgeir discovered his creative voice through photography. The photo exhibition Mood is shown at Reykjavík Museum of Photography until 15 May.

Pelléas and Mélisande

Prince Golaud is out hunting when he suddenly hears someone crying in the woods. By the lake he finds Mélisande who is lost and can’t find her way home. She becomes Golauds bride and travels with him to his grandfather, King Arkel who lives in a gloomy castle. This is French composer Claude Debussy’s only opera. It was a masterpiece. An opera unlike any other with its poetic tale of desire and jealousy narrated by beguiling and sensual music. Briton Keith Warner has created a new version of this enigmatic history, playing at the Royal Opera in Stockholm during March and April.

The comeback of Lady Macbeth

Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, directed by Ole Anders Tandberg, premiered at the Oslo Opera House during Autumn 2014. “One of the rawest, most suggestive scenes my senses have ever encountered in an opera,” wrote the Morgenbladet

critic. In spring 2016 this critically acclaimed production returns to the Oslo Opera House in Bjørvika. Faced with a brutal, violent environment, the main character Katerina Izmailova is forced to kill. Her goal is to live with the passion for which she has so longed. Premiere 1 April.

Kinetic art at Louisiana Kinetic and optical art go hand-in-hand and inspire the eyes in this year’s new spring exhibition at the Louisiana Museum for Modern Art, outside of Copenhagen. Kinetic Art is a general term for works of art that involve motion. It may be as illusion or it may be actual motion, as in sculptures with motorised parts. Eye Attack is an exhibition about putting the sensory apparatus of the viewer – you and me – at centre stage. It takes a present-day look at some of the most innovative works by over 40 artists of the period 1950-1970. Showing until 5 June. 01.16 BEST WAY 11

Birth of Norwegian Functionalism With the construction of Restaurant Skansen, Ekeberg Restaurant and Horngården, Lars Backer introduced functionalism to Norway. Many had been waiting for the dawn of a new age – now it had come. Backer and others had wrote about the

necessity of a new type of architecture. Backer died in 1930, just 38 years old. This exhibition sheds light on Backer’s life, his contribution to Norwegian architecture, and the time he lived in. Shown until the 14 August at the Oslo National Museum.

New production of the Legend of King Arthur Three years after the massive success of Robin Hood, The Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen is now ready for its seventh outdoor performance in Ulfdal. This summer it’s the turn for the legend of King Arthur – a drama about the struggle between good and evil. A tale of doom and salvation and the sword in the stone. Nicholas Bro (known from The Bridge) takes the lead with the premiere on 24 May.

New swedish performance festival

Revolve - Uppsala Performance Art Days is a new festival and a collaboration between Uppsala Art Museum and the Meat Inspection Dance in Uppsala together with Performance Pathway at the Royal College of Art in London, and Uppsala Concert & Congress. The visual arts are seen as a base presenting different performative expressions of closeness to dance, theatre, music and poetry. The festival opens with a concert at the Uppsala Concert & Congress by Japanese musician and sound artist Ryoji Ikeda, who through his electronic installations has taken the world by storm. 6-14 May in Uppsala. 12 BEST WAY 01.16

Rehearsals are under way in the farce that has everything! Frisky men, scantily clad women, Arab sheiks and a lot of doors. Unfortunately, the actors don’t wish to perform a simple farce full of sexist jokes and shallow characters. The ensemble also has serious problems with cooperation, not least with the immensely popular director. In Stage Fright (Rampljuset), a comedy by Stefan and Krister and Lars Norén, we follow the chaotic work behind the farce. Directed by Alexander MörkEidem. Celebration during King’s Day.

Amsterdam

W

herever you are in Amsterdam, you are never very far from water, and it’s something that Amsterdammers seem to have a special relationship with. If you don’t live on a boat, it seems that you at least have access to one, which is particularly evident in the big party SAIL AMSTERDAM, held every five years, and the great carnival Kings Day, which is celebrated in April each year on King Willem Alexander’s birthday. The concept seems to be to throw all possible floating structures in to the water and then party as much as possible. Both events are an experience in themselves. Beautiful old houses stand in the centre alongside the canals. The narrow streets are crowded with pedestrians and cyclists and this is where you’ll find the numerous interesting restaurants, cafes and shops, especially in the small charming area around De Negen Straatjes.

Another up and coming place is the area called Noord, especially around the old shipyard NSDM, which has emerged as a bit of an art colony with many fashionable elements. Even the New York Times has listed the area as one of the ten hippest in the world. A’DAM Toren, the old former Shell Tower, is another project in this area that will open this spring, and will house a mix of offices, clubs, music studios etc, as well as an observation deck on the 22nd floor. Art and design have long been a focus in Amsterdam and during the last ten years, ten billion euros have been invested, making it one of Europe’s most exciting cities. It is also during this period that an increasing number of visitors has helped develop the city’s restaurants, giving us everything from five star restaurants to Dutch favourites such as pancakes and bitterballs, the small fried balls with different fillings. This whole mix makes Amsterdam both a different yet exciting destination.

Mobile World Congress 2016 Latest news in the mobile world from the congress in Barcelona.

Huawei MateBook Hybrid: Giant surfplatta and computer all-in-one

LG G5 Modular mobile monster with top class pioneering cameras LG G5 has a luxurious unibody chassis in metal and can be transformed into a compact camera or hi-fi music player. The G5 LG comes with a new breakthrough concept – Modular Type. This is a modular system that makes it possible to combine the quality feel of the unibody handset with add-ons. The Module connector on the bottom of the phone allows the LG G5 to turn into a compact camera or a hi-fi player. The battery is also removable. Cam Plus is a camera grip that makes the LG G5 easier to hold steady. The camera grip has real buttons for power, shutter, zoom and video recording. Cam Plus also has its own battery which allows you to take photos and video for longer. HiFi Plus is a portable audio converter (DAC), developed in collaboration with Bang & Olufsen. It has a simple, stylish design and can play 32-bit audio quality music on the go. LG is also launching a range of accessories, which can be connected wirelessly: 360 VR (virtual reality goggles), 360 Cam (virtual reality camera), Rolling Bot (robot ball with camera that can roll around on the floor and film) and headset Tone Platinum.

LG’s mobile phone cameras have long been at the forefront. The new G5 is the first LG phone with dual rearfacing cameras. One camera has a normal picture angle and 16 megapixel resolution. The second camera is 8 megapixels and has the widest angle of view on the market - perfect for photographing landscapes. The display is 60 percent brighter than its predecessor, the LG G4, for optimum picture quality even on a sunny summer day (the worst situation for a mobile).

Huawei enters the hybrid segment with a new giant tablet that can turn into a computer. Huawei MateBook is a 12 inch tablet under 7 mm thick and with the same fine metal design as the company’s better mobile phones. The screen has a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution and will, according to Huawei, have a greater colour spectrum than, for example, Microsoft Surface. The tablet has a sixth-generation Intel Core M processor, which is a more power-efficient processor, made for just this type of product. As the Matebook lacks a fan it is also completely silent. The unit runs Windows 10 and is equipped with fingerprint sensors, for fast and secure login. For an extra 150 euros, you can get a keyboard that turns MateBook in to a computer and a further 70 euros will give you a digital pen. Huawei MateBook will be available in silver or champagne and is set to be released in the “coming months”. Price starts at 800 euros and goes all the way up to 1,800 euros for the monster version.

She turned down the chance to write about Bridget Jones. Instead Jojo Moyes made the big breakthrough with a novel that revolves around the question of euthanasia. Text: Peter Wiklund. Photography: Stine Heilmann.

Taking success to the cinema 20 BEST WAY 01.16

Jojo Moyes

W

hen Jojo Moyes worked as a journalist for The Independent, she tried simultaneously to fulfill the dream of becoming a writer. Between 1995-2000, she wrote three novels, without any interest from publishers. During this time one of her colleagues at the newspaper published Bridget Jones’s Diary - which became a runaway sucess as we all know. In fact, the story began when one of the editors on The Independent wanted someone to start writing a chronicle of a young woman’s life, and it was not Jojo Moyes but Helen Fielding who liked the idea. Well, Jojo continued writing and eventually got a contract. After the 2002 debut novel Sheltering Rain, she switched to writing novels full time. Eight books later, and she had still not topped the bestseller lists. When she explained that she was planning a story on euthanasia her publisher wasn’t exactly over the moon. She turned to another publisher who was interested, even if they weren’t so sure that the book would sell so well. Me Before You was released in early 2012 and was received very warmly by both critics and the public. The review in the New York Times began as follows: “When I finished this novel, I didnt want to review it; I wanted to reread it.” The book has sold millions of copies worldwide and topped the charts in nine different countries (including a record 46 weeks in Germany!)

The story of Lou and Will has got the readers to both laugh and cry. Soon you can experience it on the big screen with Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) and Sam Clafin (The Hunger Games) in the lead roles. The premiere has been postponed a few times, but according to Jojo Moyes herself, is probably set for June 2016. She notes that it has been a challenge to take a 130,000 word book and condense it into a normal length movie while keeping it true to the original story. But she has received indications that she has managed to convey the same emotions as in the book: “I have watched the film twice at early screenings and I always sit at the back to see who is crying. So far I estimate about 70 percent of the audience, which is as I would have hoped. But they laugh too!”she says.

Jojo Moyes explains that she has a rather unusual way to test whether a scene is emotional enough: if she cries herself when she writes it, then it’s okay. Otherwise she just continues working on it. There is much romance in her books, frequently categorised as “chick lit”– the genre which addresses issues of modern womanhood, often humorously and lightheartedly. But what is romance for her? “I’m no expert. But my husband gets up every morning and brings me coffee in bed. To me, that’s romance.” She has previously told how her husband, who is not a man known for big gestures, arranged a surprise trip to Mauritius a couple of years ago. There, they celebrated her birthday and renewed their wedding vows in a ceremony on the beach. What then is the most romantic thing she has done for him? “Hah! I’m not sure I want to say in public!”, she answers and lets you wonder. Since 2000 she has lived and worked on a farm in Essex, England, with her family and many animals - especially her beloved horses. “They have been a constant throughout my life. They are not just beautiful and brave, but they are the great leveller they don’t care who you are or what you’ve done as long as you behave right around them and meet each obstacle in the right way... And every day they still need mucking out!” Finally, what three things top Jojo’s bucket list right now? “I've got them all! Honestly? If you said I’d be making movies and living in my dream house and going scuba diving on my holidays I'd have thought you were way off the mark. I’m constantly pinching myself.”

Jojo Moyes Lives: On a farm in the Essex countryside in England. Family: Husband, Charles Arthur and children Saskia, Harry and Lachlan. Current project: Adaptation of the bestseller Me Before You. Christian name: Yes, she is named Jojo. Her parents were big Beatles fans and named her after Jojo from the song Get Back. www.jojomoyes.com

Training while travelling

With every passing year, we travel more and more both privately and with work. We all know that it is difficult to keep up your training schedule when you live out of the suitcase. But is it even possible to train properly when you’re on the road? We delve a little deeper... When you’re traveling, you want to carry as little as possible. Often that is precisely the reason you chose to leave your workout gear at home. But all you need to bring with you is actually a pair of training shoes, a set of training clothes and a water bottle. Dumbbells and walking poles can easily be left at home so they feel a little more interesting when you return. Today, most hotels have their own gym or a swimming pool, sometimes both, which they offer their guests free of charge. If you are effective, you can slot in 20-30 minutes and get yourself a good workout there. Furthermore, if you combine the pass with a sauna and a little social interaction then it will be even easier to fit in to your schedule. If you have a little more time to spend on training, then running is an excellent way to keep going during your holiday while getting the opportunity to discover your new surroundings. If you don’t fancy running on your own then Facebook is a good tool to get in touch with local running groups worldwide. Running is optimal to improve fitness and also releases endorphins - the body’s happy hormone - which will help you relax from the stress and reduces the levels of cortisol. Research also shows that all training is stimulating for positive thoughts and feelings.

22 BEST WAY 01.16

If your hotel does not have a gym or you do not have time to leave the room, then complete a short simple pass inside the room instead. There are a variety of exercises you can practice in a small space, but two excellent travel exercises are burpees and the plank. By combining these two, you have basically exercised the entire body and also increased your pulse, in just 10-20 minutes. Now that’s an effective workout! If you are often travelling then you can vary these exercises with others such as squats and sit-ups and get a really effective workout. What you eat and when is important the more often you train. The rule is usually that with condition training you should eat at least two hours before your pass, and with weight training an hour before. It is also important not to work out on an empty stomach - if you do not refill before you train then you won’t have the energy to train properly, and exercise becomes less effective. Eat a snack in the afternoon if you are aiming to train around six o’clock, just lunch isn’t enough. Research also shows that regular exercise lowers the risk of incurring type 2 diabetes, dementia, breast cancer, prostate cancer and heart attacks. The right amount of exercise along with rest and good nutrition is also a boost for the immune system. For those of you who are eager to combine business with pleasure when you are traveling in the Nordic countries, we have put together a calendar with some of 2016’s most interesting races. Good luck with your training this spring!

Cars Lexus LC 500 – Now dynamic

Toyota’s luxury brand, Lexus, has had problems in the design department, in trying to obtain a sufficiently dynamic appearance. The LC 500, a 2+2 seater sports coupé, was drawn in the company’s design studio in California and has such a dynamic form that you can easily get the impression that the car accelerates forward though it remains stationary in the parking lot!

Porsche 911 Turbo S – Fastest family member The ordinary Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe with it’s 420 hp feels a bit sluggish. It takes a whole 3.9 seconds to reach 100 km/h! Porsche have now trimmed the six-cylinder motor to 580 hp, and installed a seven-speed, dual-clutch, automatic gearbox with all-wheel drive and equipped it with a socalled Launch Control, which automatically provides the fastest acceleration. And suddenly the new model 911 Turbo S Coupe can do 0-100 km/h in an incredibly fast 2.9 seconds! With a top speed of 330 km/h.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class – New prime mover

Car manufacturers have found it hard to tear themselves away from the old maxim that every new model has to be bigger, stronger and faster than its predecessor. The new generation of the Mercedes E -Class is longer than it’s predecessor and has a

significantly larger wheelbase and track width, so the occupants will have more space to dispose of between the wheel arches inside the vehicle. Extras include an optional air suspension and a range of assistance systems for maximum comfort and safety.

Lincoln Continental – American luxury US car giants Ford and its brand, Lincoln gave us a glimpse in to the next generation of luxury cars at the auto show in Detroit this January. A large investment which according to Ford is to compete with the big cars from Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The body’s lower section is heavy and high, while the top is slim and elegant, almost like a sporty coupé. Undeniably delightful. Photo:Volvo Cars

Volvo S90 – Nordic beauty

Photo: Lincoln

The new Volvo S90 is a luxury limousine with a simple, cool nordic design. There are no weird body folds to disfigure the soft curved body surfaces. It is almost as though you get an extremely simply designed super- luxury Bentley! The interior is also nordic style with four comfortable but not too puffy armchairs. 01.16 BEST WAY 25

Hotel with a modern history and a pleasant location

Where did the ABBA success story begin? Well, the current Best Western Plus Priceless Hotel Linkoping - at least according to one of the hotel’s owners, Bengt Pettersson.

26 BEST WAY 01.16

Linköping Castle is the oldest secular that is, non-church - building, dating back to the 1100’s. Many bishops and governors have lived here over the centuries (even if part of the castle was actually a prison in the 1700’s). Best Western Plus Priceless Hotel lies just a stone’s throw from the castle, and while not nearly as old, it too has hosted prominent figures just like the castle, though more on that later. Bengt Pettersson together with Stefan Carneteg has owned the hotel since 2011 and proudly claims that it is now fresh and totally renovated - and he means ‘total’:

Hotel “We have been engaged in the renovation since 2014 and have gone through every single millimetre of the hotel - everything is completely up-todate now !”, he says. The hotel is a neighbour to the castle, with a location that makes it both central and somewhat secluded at the same time. “It’s right next to everything you would want in a city centre, whilst it’s also possible to kick back and chill out if you want.” He explains that it is easy to find and get to the hotel from the E4, although not as close to the motorway as when it opened in 1960. “Then it was called the Rally Hotel and was beside was what was then Motorway 1. Each room had its own parking place and it was a popular stop for musicians who pulled in between gigs. It was a combination of a hotel and a motel, where both guests and their cars were catered for.” Now the hotel has a mix of business travellers and weekend guests, and has succeeded in becoming popular among many - being ranked number one on TripAdvisor, says Bengt Pettersson. “I think it is largely because we can offer a special mood and atmosphere. It permeates everything from the decor to the staff and amenities, and even to the breakfast on offer.” Among the amenities are a fitness centre, open-air swimming pool and a jacuzzi, while the breakfast is ‘perhaps our signature’ according to Bengt Pettersson. Best Western’s breakfast concept – Best Breakfast by Tina Nordström – is included in the rate for overnight guests. “Our restaurant Beer & Burger is something else that we are proud of. With a choice of 15 different burgers, I can guarantee that everyone can find their personal favourite!”

But what was that thing with ABBA? The year was 1966, and it was a sunny early summer weekend. The Hep Stars (with Benny Andersson) and the Hootenanny Singers (with Bjorn Ulvaeus) were both out on Folk Park tours and happened to play in Ludvika on the same evening. “First up was Bjorn’s band, and then he stayed behind to listen when the Hep Stars went on. With their interest awakened, the bands decided to meet during the next weekend in Linköping”, says Bengt Pettersson. The whole thing, however, almost became an anticlimax, Benny misunderstood and thought that they should meet in Lidköping ... “They had set off for Lidköping, but had to turn east to Linköping where the Hootenanny Singers waited. When they finally came together they started the

party at the Rally Hotel. When the bands were forced out, the party continued in the park by the castle.” The day after - or rather, later the same day - both Bjorn and Benny were called up for military service, and were probably not in the best shape... “A few years later the first song that the two wrote together was released, and in 1970 the famous quartet performed in public for the first time so I think that history was probably written that June night in the hotel!”

Wine is the focus at new hotel in Solna Photo: Jan Malmström

GI. Skovridergaard in Danish Silkeborg, will be the first hotel in Denmark, and the eighth hotel in the Nordic countries, to join the rapidly growing soft brand BW Premier Collection. The hotel is a historical forrester farm and a previous spa, situated among the beautiful lakes just outside Silkeborg. For many years it was used as a private meeting and conference centre by Jyske Bank.

Copenhagen – A popular stopover for cruise ships Another increase in visitors is due this year when a total of 700,000 cruise guests are expected to disembark in the Danish capital, where cruise ships are expected to dock 286 times. 28 BEST WAY 01.16

The Winery opened in Solna, Stockholm this January. The hotel wanted to recreate an industrial feel with brick walls, raw concrete and large windows from floor to ceiling, inspired by similar hotels in the US. Behind the large windows in the lobby is the hotel’s own winery, where they press grapes from one of the owning family’s vineyards in Tuscany. The bar has a wine boutique and a staircase down to it’s own wine cellar. The Winery is one of the newest hotels to join the BW Premier Collection and is Sweden’s first urban winery hotel.
