Nature Vs. Artificial
Current MA Project-In Progress

Site Analysis

Location: Camberwell Green Magistrate 15 D’Eynsford Rd, London
Size of Site: 17,253 SQM

This current project is focused on a couple different aspects of current climate based technologies. Solar Energy, Direct Carbon Capture, Hydroponics. The purpose of the project is to develop an interconnected system of differing technologies into streamlined into one naturally artificial organic structure.
The structure proposed is a tree, as a source and symbol of life, the idea is to create an artificial tree that both cleans the atmosphere by removing CO2 and adding O2 but also generates energy through solar and bio-organic power.

Tree Interior
The tree both a artificial and natural model with its insides consisting of wires and supports with a fast growing plant to give the tree aesthetic. Along side piping along the outside which is filled with cyanobacteria to both reflect light and produce bio-organic energy which is collected by solar leaves that are along the sides and top of the tree in an attempt to make an almost selfsufficient system.

I like to think, (right now, please!), of a cybernetic forest, filled with pines and electronics, where deer stroll peacefully, past computers, as if they were flowers, with spinning blossoms. -Richard Brautigan
Design Intent Building Conversion
The intent is to develop a new type of structure which could lay the ground work for developing a new understanding of how to adapt notion of “Nature vs. Artificial” and rekindle a new theory of how we as humans infuse machine base bodies with nature.
Inspiration

The Camberwell Green Magistrate courthouse would be reconstructed into a lab and energy conversion center. The idea for the tree and lab is to work in tandem in an effort to collect CO2 and convert it into materials that can be used in other forms. These consisting of building materials to fuel/energy sources.

Rethinking Affordable Housing

The Issue
As 108 million Americans live in rental conditions, about ¼ pay more than half their monthly income for it. This creates poorer living conditions leading to negative effects on physical and mental health. Though many affordable housing buildings struggle in creating a sustainable space that promotes all types of natural health benefits. Many new apartment buildings don’t represent the surrounding community leaving a large blank face that negatively affects the identity of the neighborhood.

Design Intent
Affordable housing should engage with the community by connecting with the needs of residents by creating a space that encourages healthy and sustainable living.

Single Person Apartment: $25,000
2 Person Apartment: $28,600-$30,000
3 Person Apartment: $35-$37,000
Community Representation Mood Board
As a way to represent the community the focus of the design was to create the space to have lots of moments that people can see from the streets and for residents of the space. With the cultural space it splits in representing the art or traditional services style of the culture. The building would have many spaces that can hold events representing the culture through lighting and through interaction.

• Exhibit dynamic rigid forms and triangular structural faces
• Use of Feng Shui, natural elements and defining moments

As a way to maximize on energy efficiency and passive design the building was designed around the idea of being opened up for both airflow and reflectivity
• Use of light colors and floor door windows to maximize reflectivity through the space, leading to less need for lighting leading to less energy usage
• Maximize on airflow to help cool the space during hotter seasons

Design Concept

Design Concept
The idea of my design is to create a space that not only promotes productivity but promotes a positive well-being to users of the space. By including biophilic design through treatments and introducing greenery into the space it can promote a sense of calming and relaxation. Another addition to this is by adding in acoustical treatments on both the ceiling, walls, and even desk areas to promote a sense of privacy for the individual user. As a hybrid space the inclusion technology is paramount in communicating with those that can’t or aren’t able to go to the office.
Biophilic design - to promote a sense of natural elements giving people a better, positive feeling
Acoustical treatments - to providing privacy and aesthetically pleasing look
Wellbeing - by including things that refocus one’s mind away from work or making it easier to work with technology and space creation
Sustainability & Hybrid Enhancement - including new ways to improve overall flow of energy throughout the space and adding innovative use of technology including video and audio technology

Cultural Cafe
Location: 500 Erie Blvd. E Syracuse, NY
Built: Early 1800s
History

Concepts & Drawings
The concept was to create a space that was equal in both flow and maneuverability between both floors. The idea was inspired by the middle eastern curved calligraphy and natural floral forms
Mood Board

The Smith Restaurant & Supply building was built in the 1800s and redesigned with the 6 story portion in the 1900s. This building was one of the first to sit along the Erie canal as travelers crossed through to trade and stock up on goods and supplies. The building has stood as a monument of the culture and community of the city of Syracuse.
Design Intent
The intent of this project is to create a space that connects to the Middle Eastern cultural food-way in Syracuse. The scope of the project was to focus on a Restaurant called the Baghdad Restaurant and use this as inspiration for patterns, color, style, and ideas on how to create a Middle Eastern cafe space

Walk-through of space

Material Board

The concept behind this key space is to create an area for quick transition while also providing an open airflow throughout the space. This open kitchen concept helps spread the aroma of spices and sweets throughout the space making it more calming and relaxing prompting people to want to stay longer and enjoy.

Extras

Location: Silk St, Barbican, London
EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom
Built: 1982
As a way to bring more people to “The Barbican” the idea is to create a new event space that allows for people to enjoy many of the night time musical events that are held while also acting as an art installation using a large geodesic dome as the base. Inspired by the museum and the theaters the installation would stand duel functional piece; an art piece during the day showcasing an array of colors, and at night an covered silent disco that follow the current performance.

Moodboard

During the day the sunlight would enter the space through the colorful plexiglass frame and would reflect off the inner columns shooting colors all around the area. At night the dome would be covered with a thick, dark PVC fiberglass cover that will help absorb and reflect both light and sound.

ECOFLEX
A material focus on the material ECOFLEX a sound absorber. The idea was to study and understand the select material and see how it can be use in a new way in an abstract system and apply it to a space
Information
ECOflex is the easy office space divider that is sound absorbing, conveniently flexible, and eco-friendly. These panels come in one size but can be stacked and combined to be long strips or interconnected. Like many in Slalom “ECO” class the materials are 100% recycled material from inside to out. These panels have 360 degree flexibility which helps control the dynamic ambient noises and improve acoustic comfort and allowing the space to be created in maximum freedom.

The idea behind arrangement was to form individual sound pods. These sound pods would be able to absorb and bounce the sound within the each enclosed space. The reasoning for the abstract form of the material is to both stretch its capabilities and have a more blanketed appearance.
