ALL THE NEWS FROM DARTFORD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE PRINCIPAL’S NOTE

It is always bittersweet at the end of an academic year with the chance to reflect and recharge nearly here but, before then, we say goodbye to staff and students which is always sad. We say thank you to the following for their dedication over the time they have been here (in brackets) and wish them good luck in their new job or retirement: Miss Bhaiji (3 years), Ms Cane (6 years), Mrs Cordery (2 years), Mrs Gower (2 years), Ms Loveridge (13 years), Mrs Owen (2 years) and Mrs Talbot (16 years). A special mention is needed for Mrs Kelly (21 years) who has stepped down from being a Vice Principal but who will be with us 2 days a week teaching French next year. We also wish our Year 11 and Year 13 students the very best of luck and look forward to seeing them on results day. We hope that many of Year 11 will return and continue their education at DSTC. Thank you to all parents, carers and guardians for your continued support and we wish everyone a very happy and safe summer. The new Years 7 and 12 join us on 31st August and all other students return on Monday 3rd September.

DSTC STEM CHALLENGE

T

he Year 7 students showed their resilience and teamwork by building fantastic structures from cocktail sticks and gumdrops.

They showed that they were able to lead and communicate effectively to really impress the judges. The winning team, with the highest tower, was captained by Rebecca Mooney.

s the General Data Protection Regulations came into effect on 25th May 2018, the College now needs your consent to use your daughter’s name or image in College documents and/or online.

We would be grateful if the Consent Form could be completed and returned to the College Reception – a copy can be collected by your daughter from Reception.

The students have worked hard to manage the cost of the manufacture to make sure anyone who makes a purchase gets a great product at the lowest

DSTC ENGINEERING CLUB Rebecca Mooney and Frankie McDonald built their own remote control robot, showing excellent engineering and problem-solving skills.

They worked hard over 3 months to build a very complex product and demonstrated excellent collaboration and teamwork.

A

DARTFORD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CAREERS FAIR

s part of the new Sixth Form induction programme, a Careers Fair was organised for new Year 12 students to attend on the afternoon of 28th June. The Fair was also opened up to our current Year 10 students.

This event took place in the Sixth Form Hub with 16 local and national employers from a variety of sectors attending:-

Students enthusiastically engaged with the representatives, asking questions about further education and career paths available to them. The feedback on this event was excellent with all involved saying the event was a fantastic opportunity for them to see the range of careers available as well as discuss their future pathway to university, college or an apprenticeship.

One teacher informed us that two Year 10 students had even taken the opportunity to arrange summer work experience placements while they were there. As well as coming away armed with information booklets to help guide them in their future choices, students also enjoyed collecting the many ‘freebies’ on offer.

DSTC WINS FIRST PLACE! STEM COMPETITION

n April Mrs Vale set her Year 9 class a homework task of entering the WISE Young Women’s Board Essay Competition.

PRIMARY SCHOOL DANCE PERFORMANCE

O

n Friday, 16th March Westgate Primary School visited DSTC to watch a dance performance in the Hall. This was a showcase of our Year 10 Dance students and Cascade Dance Company performing 12 numbers on stage. We had 90 children and 10 staff from Westgate Primary and all seemed to thoroughly enjoy the show!

On Wednesday, 21st March Primary School Friendship Afternoon took place at DSTC, 150 pupils from local primary schools came to visit DSTC, make friends and watch a dance performance. Miss Wright, Lead Teacher of Dance/Primary Liaison said “We are delighted how much the children enjoyed the dance performance today. They were all beaming with joy!”

A

group of students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 represented the school at the annual District Sports Competition at Dartford Athletics Track. The girls have all worked extremely hard over the term to get ready and after a very hot day at the track all performed fantastically well. Our Year 8’s won the competition for the second year running and a large amount of school records were broken.

Notable results: The Year 8 team are Borough Champions.

The Year 7 team came 3rd in the borough.

DSTC ATTENDS NHS KENT SKILLS CLUBS

O

ver a period of five weeks in May and June, a group of Year 9 students had a fantastic opportunity to attend Kent Skills Club at Darent Valley Hospital.

These clubs were organised by the National Skills Academy for Health in London, however the sessions were led by staff from DVH. This ensured that the information came from the very professionals who do this for a living and who were able to give a “hands-on” account of their day to day job.

The purpose of these clubs was to introduce students to the large variety of job roles available within the NHS and the avenues that can be taken to get on the different career paths. During the sessions, students had the chance to plaster their own arms, wear chemical suits and work on an assimilation man used by surgeons. They also learned how to make a wound with coloured paste and understand the importance of Care Values and public health campaigns.

The evenings were very interactive, allowing the girls to have a go and see how things would be done in the hospital. They also provided good discussions, as many of the interactive activities were new to the students. During the last session, we had a presentation where parents came to applaud what the students had achieved. All the students got involved, asking questions to help them understand the different skills required. This opportunity was in collaboration with St Catherine’s Catholic School for Girls in Bexleyheath so the girls were able to make new friends, build groups and participate fully.

DSTCASPIRE VISIT - INMARSAT

O

n 18th June, students from Years 7 and 8 travelled up to London to the Inmarsat offices in Old Street. The students met one of the VPs of the company who explained the process of sending a $350 million satellite into space to orbit the earth in the Geostationary orbit. It takes 5 years to design, build, test and launch a satellite, and uses a huge number of staff with experience in lots of different STEM areas.

They learnt how these satellites ensure communication between satellite phones, deep sea vessels, aeroplane cockpits and aid agencies all over the world. Students got to meet engineers at different stages of their careers and got to carry out their own engineering projects as part of a team. The highlight of the day was wearing space gloves and having to rewire an electrical circuit like a real astronaut!

The girls were a credit to the school during this visit and it has opened their eyes to the many STEM opportunities available to them in their careers.

ears 10 and 11 Performing Arts students were excited to attend The Orchard Theatre, Dartford on Wednesday, 28th March to see ‘Thriller’. Miss Wright, Lead Teacher of Dance, said about the trip “This was an amazing upbeat fun show which was a tribute of Michael Jackson’s best famous works. All 15 DSTC Performing Arts students who attended thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was an inspiration to us all!”

DSTC EARNS THE SPORTS MARK SILVER AWARD

ach year schools can apply to Sport England to see if they qualify for a Sports Mark Award in recognition of their sports provision. The PE department have done this and have again been awarded the Silver Sports Mark.

This is a great achievement as it shows that, for the third year running, we are one of the best providers in the borough for sport in curriculum and extra-curricular activities.

DSTC SPACE NIGHT

B

ack in the Autumn Term, Mya Stanley (Year 8) said “I want to do my research project about Space” and so Space Night was born. On the evening of Friday, 29th June we welcomed 22 Year 7 and 8 students, 1 Year 11 assistant, 6 members of staff, representatives from Brunel, Kent and Canterbury Universities and Robin Mobbs, our keynote speaker to the DSTC Hall.

The science activities included two separate shows in the Astrodome courtesy of Cordi, Faith and Thili from the University of Kent. Their Outreach Officer has emailed us to say “It was really lovely to come to DSTC and meet so many engaged students. I’m looking forward to working with them again in the coming year.” Sarah, an engineer from Brunel University, led students to build a mini Philli lander, yes it did also bounce when dropped from a height.

Anne from Canterbury Christ Church University helped the girls to build soda rockets and awarded prizes for the two highest rockets.

DSTC TUCK SHOP BUSINESS

D

uring the Spring Term, all students in Year 7 worked in groups on a ‘Tuck Shop Business’ project in their numeracy lessons. Students were involved in creating a theoretical business from scratch; they were asked to carry out market research, to select product lines and purchase products, to choose selling prices and decide upon special offers whilst still ensuring their business would be profitable.

A winning group from each numeracy class was selected and invited to set up a real ‘Tuck Shop’ within school. Students worked exceptionally hard with a member of staff to create the DSTC Sweet Shack which opened on 18th June for two weeks. Students and staff alike were able to purchase items at a reasonable price; the most popular of which was the unicorn lollipop!

The DSTC Sweet Shack would like to thank everyone who supported the project. A profit of £38.88 was made and will be re-invested in next year’s exciting numeracy projects.

DSTC SIXTH FORM EMPLOYABILITY FORTNIGHT

Every year our Sixth Form students take part in two weeks work experience. This is an exciting opportunity for them to enhance both their vocational and transferable employability skills. We encourage the students to find their own placements, to promote their independence and ensure they get the most out of these two weeks.

This year the students went to a wide variety of employers, including:- Barclays Bank, ME London Hotel, Debenhams Head Office, Dartford Council (to help promote the Dartford Festival), Bromley and Bexley Magistrates Courts and SEM Ltd – to name but a few.

We endeavour to visit the majority of students in their placements and obtain direct feedback from the employer. This feedback, along with the diary each student completes, forms a valuable record for further education and employment applications.

We regularly receive extremely positive feedback from employers. In addition, past placements have led to offers of employment. If you work for a company/organisation that can offer our Year 11 or Sixth Form students work experience placements in the future, I would love to hear from you. ALL THE NEWS FROM DARTFORD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN IN ENGINEERING DAY International Women in Engineering Day is an international awareness campaign to raise the profile of women in engineering and focus attention on the amazing career opportunities available to girls in this exciting industry. It celebrates the outstanding achievements of women engineers throughout the world. DSTC celebrated this day with assemblies delivered by Mrs Donegan-Edwards and Mr Law, lessons on inspirational female engineers and culminated in a visit by Dr Zoe Laughlin. Zoe Laughlin is a co-founder/Director of the Institute of Making and the Materials Library project, she works with different materials and through her passion and dedication has been approached to work for Apple and Nike.

She has also featured on a variety of television shows and was the resident scientist on This Morning.

It was a real privilege to have her come in and the girls enjoyed listening to her talk about her work.

Zoe was also challenging the girls to think about how they used plastics in their everyday life and has set the girls a challenge, to reduce the amount of single use plastic they use.

DSTC TAKES PART IN JUNIOR MATHS CHALLENGE A group of 20 students from Years 7 and 8 were selected to take part in the annual UK Junior Mathematical Challenge.

This involved the students in 25 problem-solving activities whereby they had to use their mathematical knowledge, their common sense and their powers of deduction to solve complex mathematical puzzles. Overall, the students were awarded with 3 silver certificates and 6 bronzes. This is a fantastic achievement for the students involved and is the best haul of certificates in KS3 for quite some time! Star performers included Jodie Gillman (best in Year 8) and Chloe Jaques (best in Year 7). Well done to all the participants.

MAKE THE FUTURE LIVE

Fifteen Year 9 students had a day filled with fun-packed STEM activities at the Make the Future Live festival. The festival, organised by Shell, ran from Thursday 5th July to Sunday 8th July and featured amazing music acts from Ella Eyre and Lemar, plus entertainment from live science shows like Wonderstruck, the Science Museum and the Royal Institution.

DSTC students attended the festival on Friday, this took place at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. They got to watch science shows, play hands-on interactive games, immerse themselves in the latest Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality experiences, enjoy a variety of street food and meet new students with similar interests in Science and Engineering.

The girls also enjoyed observing teams of university students from around the world battle to build and drive their vehicles on the outdoor track in the Shell Eco-marathon - a unique energy-efficiency competition.

The girls were glad to have been invited on the trip as they were able to see first-hand creative and innovative ways of making the world a more efficient and sustainable place to live.

ALL THE NEWS FROM DARTFORD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE DSTC ENTERS FIT TO STUDY EXPERIMENT Scientists from the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes University are running an experiment to find out how PE lessons affect the academic performance of Year 8 pupils.

Why did we take part?

• To raise the profile of our subject.

• To increase the awareness of the benefits of PE. We’re not just a physical subject, we have a huge impact on students’ social and personal skills, creativity, cognitive skills and their health and wellbeing. 100 schools across the UK were involved.

As it is such a large project the results will take up to possibly 18 months to collate, report and conclude by Oxford Brookes.

The overall results, as opposed to individual results, will be sent to Mrs Davis. We shall update you when the results come in.

ABOUT FIT TO STUDY Neuroscience evidence suggests that physical exercise can influence brain function and structure, both immediately and in the long term.

The ‘Fit to Study‘ project is a randomised controlled study to test the impact on academic performance (as well as fitness, wellbeing and cognitive function) of a teacher training intervention designed to try to optimise the content of PE for brain and cognitive function during secondary school (Year 8) Physical Education (PE) lessons.

The project aims to rigorously test the impact of this intervention in 100 state-funded secondary schools.

This year we have entered a competition, created inventions and hosted a space night for year 7 & 8. The competition we entered was called The Bright Sparks Awards 2018. We entered two different inventions: Ugne Bukauskaite with her dance pad; Sophie Erodotou, Jaspreet Kaur and Abigail Dolan with their water pump seesaw.

The space night was created by Mya Stanley, Jannath Uddin and Kate Francis. When planning space night we used STEM. The science was the whole project, the technology was the people we hired to help set up the astrodome and computers, the engineering was the activities that were set up and maths was to calculate how much money we would have to raise to pay for food and the people who came from universities and ESA.

DSTC SPRING FAIR SUCCESS

The Spring Fair is an event hosted by DSTC6th’s Social Enterprise and was held on Thursday 29th March. The Year 13 Business students chose a fairground theme and set up a variety of stalls which included Popcorn and Candy Floss, Hook the Duck, Face Painting, Guess the Sweets and Name the Bear.

There was also a bouncy castle and Easter Egg Treasure Hunt which were very popular! The Sixth Formers did superbly well in raising money for the event and secured sponsorship from a number of local and national businesses including Chartwell’s, Max’s Caribbean Kitchen, M&S, Nandos, Royal Siam Thai Restaurant and Wilkinsons. A special thank you to them for helping to make the fair a success!

DSTC BOTANY CLUB

This term we have been trying to introduce a flower bed on the school grounds so we could put our results into practice. Last term we went round the school collecting soil samples of different types.

Then we grew cress in them to see which would give the best result. After gathering and recording our results, we decided to plant them and leave them over the holidays. When we got back we found the plants in terrible conditions; undeterred we have decided to do it again this time we hope to have better results.

For the past few weeks we have been taking cuttings from different plants and planting them to care for at home over the summer; we hope when we come back we will have an area where we can plant them. After we have got them settled we hope to continue to monitor the responses of insects to the flower bed while trying new things in it. We hoped to try and find a way to get the water to rotate around the flower bed by itself this term but, due to some mistakes that happened, that will not be possible. Also we wished to find a way to create a greenhouse over it but still be able to monitor the progress.

We will continue to monitor the flower bed and hope to try and grow different plants that require different climates, we wish to find a way to create these climates in the flower bed and grow the plants that need these climates.

Despite the sudden downpour, we still had a really good turnout and everyone who came said how much fun they had with good food and music to keep everyone entertained.

There was a raffle draw on the day which had prizes of a Thorpe Park annual pass, Nando’s Chicken Cheques, M&S vouchers and a Pamper Hamper. Congratulations to Jessica Sherrell, Rebecca Mooney, Kayla Dawes, Mrs Hussey and Mrs Sandy who were all winners!

The Social Enterprise raised £587.20 in sales and made a profit of £110 which they donated to their chosen charity, Barnardo’s.

ALL THE NEWS FROM DARTFORD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE MINDFULNESS - STRESS RELIEF This time of year can often be very busy and overwhelming as you have now started your new timetables for the next academic year. There are also events such as Sports Day and Community Day to look forward to as we end another school year.

Do you sometimes have feelings of anxiety, stress, confusion or panic?

Well, look no further. This section of our newsletter gives you some useful advice and suggestions which will help enormously! If you dedicate yourself and practice them fully I guarantee you will feel better in so many ways.

Mindfulness is all about taking control of your emotions rather than letting them take control of you. It is about pausing and being in the present moment. I know it is impossible to avoid facing our emotions; that is not what I ask of you. What I hope you can do is realise that emotion and stop it from taking over and ruining your day. I appreciate it can be hard, but once you start learning some of these wonderful techniques I assure you, you will want to know more!

Try this short stress buster: 5 senses drill 1. Pause what you are doing for a moment and take one or two deep breaths to help bring you into the present moment.

2. Look around you, and silently name three things that you see around you.

3. Now opening to the sounds around you, silently note and name three things that you can hear right now.

4. Bringing your attention to your body, silently name three sensations that you can feel in this moment (maybe warmth, tingling, contraction, coolness‌).

5. Bringing your attention to smell and taste, what do you notice in your immediate awareness when you bring your attention to these senses - lightly name what you experience.

Take one or two breaths to finish this mindfulness exercise.

Repeat this exercise every now and then to bring your awareness to what is happening in the present moment. Now is the best time to start building your resilience to help you deal with daily life struggles, as well as to help prepare you for a new academic year. Remember our Co-operative School Values include self-help - mindfulness is the perfect way to start helping yourself to positively grow and develop your inner self.

ALL THE NEWS FROM DARTFORD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE DSTC IS SPARKING EXCITEMENT IN SCIENCE Every year KM Education hold a Bright Sparks competition where teams of budding young engineers and scientists are encouraged to collaborate using cross-curricular skills in maths, IT, science and engineering to design a project that can develop innovative, practical solutions to solve a local or global issue.

The DSTC Science Club, under the watchful eye of Mrs Vale, entered this year and through their hard work and determination made it through to the ‘Dragons’ Den’ style grand final at Discovery Park, Sandwich. The team consisted of Ugne Bukasukaite, Abigail Dolan, Sophie Erodotou and Jaspreet Kaur.

The team had to design their project and then go on to make a working prototype. They were then filmed in advance in school to show the details of the project. This film is then screened before the students take to the stage to describe their creation and dragons quiz the youngsters on their initiative. This year the dragons consisted of representatives from Astro Communications, Pfizer, BAE Systems Rochester, Discovery Park, Megger, Global Associates, Golding Vision (part of Golding Homes), and Highways England.

Ugne’s dance mat project using magnets being moved in coils of wire to generate electricity received a special commendation at the awards. The other group project, Water Pump Seesaw, used moving water passing through a turbine to power a motor. This was also received well by the dragons and the girls presented incredibly well on stage and were a credit to DSTC. Both of the projects are on show in SC1. Well done girls for fantastic efforts and let’s hope we can make the final again next year!

We have designed a Water Pump See-saw. We have recycled two 2 litre bottles and have sealed them together with a hot glue gun. Inside the bottle we have put a mini water-resistant dynamo to hopefully create enough power to light up a mini bulb. Unfortunately, the dynamo only makes electricity when the water runs one way.

Recycled Materials - our club has used the following materials: plastic bottles, hot glue gun, bottle lids, dynamo, plastic flaps, water.

What will it do and how does it work? This project has been created as it will help people who can’t afford electricity for lights or chargeable electronics etc. It will help many people around the world. Furthermore, we would like to install this idea in Parks, Theme Parks and Funfairs.

My small change for the planet was creating renewable electricity using Pringle cans and a coil of wire. My project is about generating renewable electricity using waste materials; my project is aimed for developing countries that don’t have any electricity. I entered Bright Sparks Awards 2018 and became a champion. My parents drove me to Sandwich, where the event was held – I had to show my project and talk in front of the ‘dragons’. They were called dragons because the event was held like a Dragons’ Den type of talk.
