September 14 – December 8, 2018 Zanele Muholi (b. 1972) is a visual activist based in Johannesburg. Muholi co-founded the Forum for Empowerment of Women in 2002 and Inkanyiso, a forum for queer and visual (activist) media, in 2009. Their works were featured in important international exhibitions including the South African pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale (2013) and documenta 13, Kassel (2013). Most recently, Muholi was bestowed France’s highest cultural honor, the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts des Lettres.

Somnyama Ngonyama, which translates to Hail the Dark Lioness in isiZulu, is Muholi’s ongoing series of self-portraits taken in Europe, Asia, North America and Africa between 2014 and 2017. In these self-reflective and psychologically charged portraits, Muholi poses critical questions about social (in)justice, human rights, and contested representations of the Black body. By increasing the contrast in post-production, the dark complexion of Muholi’s skin becomes the focal point of a multilayered interrogation of beauty, pride, desire, and interlinked phobias and isms including homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, racism, and sexism.

THE ARTS AND ACTIVISM: A PANEL DISCUSSION Tuesday, October 2, 2018 | 6:30 p.m.

Organized on the occasion of Sistagraphy’s 25th anniversary, this panel will discuss how photography has been used to influence social commentary in communities of color locally, nationally, and globally.

Sistagraphy provides a sisterhood for women to bond and to share their own perspectives, making personal and social commentaries using their camera lenses, and exhibiting their photographs for the world to view.

You’re invited to an afternoon of poetic proportions featuring an original performance by award winning lyricist and activist, Lyrispect. Inspired by Zanele Muholi: Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail The Dark Lioness, Lyrispect will moderate a panel of special invited guests to tackle questions surrounding the sexuality, spirituality, and visibility of LGBTQI women of the African Diaspora.

A DAY WITH(OUT) ART COMMUNITY DAY YOGA IN THE MUSEUM

Saturday, December 1, 2018 | 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Experience a yoga class surrounded by works of art and engage in a practice that centers around balance, focus, and strength.

Join us for an afternoon of celebration, candid conversations, and art inspired by the work of Zanele Muholi, which takes place on the international day of action and mourning in response to the AIDS Crisis.

Mondays, September 17 – November 26, 2018 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Yoga in the Museum is free, open to all, and appropriate for beginner and experienced yogis alike. Space, yoga mats, and props are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

This program is organized in collaboration with Art21 and Visual AIDS.
