Welcome to my SIXTIETH bi- monthly edition of the best A5 Community Magazine in South Liverpool! - L25 Woolton Times for September/October 2015- I hope you have all had a great summer - the weather has been very mixed all over the place - I was in Texas & we even had some rain & thunder & lightening .

I would like to welcome all our new advertisers in this edition, there are many, I wish them all the luck with their current & new business ventures. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal businesses again for the tremendous support they give me by either advertising or producing articles which we all enjoy and look forward to reading.

Woolton in Bloom did not enter RHS competitions this year but continued with their high standard of plants & arrangements making our village beautiful - they have some surprises for us in 2016.

See a poem written by Jean McEvoy a true Wooltonian and member of Womens Institute on page 56 - it is fantastic, all about Woolton Village.

A lot of changes are taking place in Woolton Village at the moment - but no empty premises. We welcome into L25 - Catherine Higgins Law, Danielle James Clinic, Melanie Louise, PL Property Services and Smallworld Nursery.

I can’t believe we are starting to talk about Christmas 2015- never too early to get yourself organised so don’t forget to support local businesses when either buying your Christmas gifts/vouchers treats for meals & drinks etc - the village need your support.

Include Me - Bringing people together It is nearly 2 years since we started our Wednesday morning social group at Linksview. The time has flown by and it is difficult to believe that we have achieved so much, in such a short space of time and with so little.

We initially started our group with 2 people and have now grown to 35-40 people attending regularly each week. Over the last 2 years, we have gained in experience and we are constantly planning to expand and do more with our group, including organizing more day trips out.

We know that our group is making a difference in people’s lives as we have seen new friendships created and people meeting up with each other socially outside the group, which is something we had hoped to achieve, making a real difference in people’s lives.

We are extremely grateful to all the generous people who help in any way to make our events so special.

We would love to meet you or anyone you know who may be interested in our group. So don't be shy, come along and

SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2015 NEWSLETTER RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION FREE FATHER CHRISTMAS EVENT 28 NOVEMBER Father Christmas will tour the Village in his sleigh, on SATURDAY 28th NOVEMBER starting at 3.00pm from 63 Allerton Road. The route will cover Quarry Street, Linksview, Vale Road, Allerton Road, and the Village centre, with Santa calling at many of the local retirement homes on the way. The lights switch on for the large Christmas tree will be held held at 4-15pm by Lodes Pond central reservation, as Santa arrives to greet the children and see them in his grotto say hello and hand out free lollipops / chocolate money afterwards. Glow sticks will be provided to the children visiting the grotto. Santa’s tour of the village in his sleigh will include support from several Village youth organisations and Schools. It is very much a team event.

Our thanks go to the Woolton Churches group, led by St Peter’s Church and St James Church consistently supporting the Association in helping to provide these community events.

More details will follow closer to the day - there may be a choir.

Staff from Sainsbury’s of Woolton will provide a Christmas Table Sale to coincide with events and provide free supplies of Mince pies and hot mulled wine to families, bringing a really nice touch to this years community get together.

Many thanks go to MERSEYSIDE POLICE for their efforts in helping make the day a well run, safe event during which everyone, both young and old can enjoy the spirit of a real Village Christmas get together, to set the season off on the right foot in these especially difficult times.

Thanks goes to LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL for supporting the event, and to all the many volunteers who make this important celebration of Woolton Village Community life and spirit possible.

Thank you to everyone for the comments about the floral displays in the village. So many of you have said that you hadn’t expected the village to look so good because we weren’t entering any competitions. We had promised that we would still make the village look fabulous and judging from the positive feedback I think we achieved that.

The only difference has been that the committee haven’t had the same stress that preparing for competition brings with it.

It will soon be time for the summer planting to make way for spring bedding plants. How quickly the summer has passed!

Before we know it the village will be sparkling with tree lights.

We are already planning for next year when we will celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. As the saying goes… ’watch this space ‘.

CILLA BLACK’S FUNERAL Cilla’s funeral took place in the same church as her wedding - St Mary's Church Woolton.

The 72-year-old passed away in Spain, her eldest son Robert discovered his mum on the terrace of her Costa del Sol luxury villa in Estepona, at 5.30pm on August 1.

Cilla's family said goodbye to the legendary singer and TV star in a Mass held by the Right Reverend Thomas Williams, Auxiliary Bishop of Liverpool, on Thursday 20th August 2015 at St Mary’s Church, where she married the love of her life Bobby Willis in 1969.

She was then laid to rest in a private ceremony alongside her parents in Allerton Cemetery.

Crowds of fans and personalities from the world of music and television gathered for the funeral of Cilla Black in Woolton. Thousands lined the streets for the funeral cortège as it made its way to the church in Woolton Village.

Tributes poured in from Bruce Forsyth, Ringo, McCartney family, Joan Collins to mention a few.

Cilla was famous for a string of hits in the 1960s and went on to become one of TV’s biggest stars with shows including Blind Date and Surprise Surprise. Her career in popular music and television spanned six decades before her sudden death, aged 72.

Commentators on TV mentioned how green and beautiful the area of Woolton looked.

RIP Cilla.

THE WOOLTON SOCIETY CARES FOR WOOLTON The Woolton Society began the new season by taking part in Heritage Open Day on Saturday 12th September.

Visitors were taken on an architectural highlights tour, which took in the Grade 1 listed Woolton Hall, and the nineteenth century Mechanics Institute, now a private home. Also on offer were Beatles tours, taking in St Peter's hall, where John met Paul at the Woolton Fete in July 1957. This walk went on to see the grave of Eleanor Rigby, Strawberry Field, & Mendips.

In accordance with English Heritage rules all events are free, and many buildings which are otherwise closed are open to the public for the day.

The first talk of the season was given in September by Diana Goodier, who spoke on The Vikings on Merseyside.

This was a very well received talk, with Norse artefacts available to the audience, & many new details of the Viking settlements on Merseyside learned.

The next talk will be given by John Boyce, who will take us on A Walk Through Kirkdale on Wednesday 21st October. The virtual walk will start at Spellow Lane, near Goodison Park, and go on to Bevington Bush off Scotland Road. The talk will be held in Woolton Village

LIBERAL DEMOCRATS Malcolm Kelly The future of our green and open space in Liverpool is becoming more and more of a concern for people in Woolton. Whenever I am out meeting local residents this is one of the first things they ask me about, what's happening to one park or another.

More specifically I get more enquiries raised with me about Woolton Woods than anywhere else and a show of anger when I tell them how this Council is wishing to continue to build on it. If this is what I hear from local residents, then I am certain that Labour Councillors are hearing the same, but are they listening? I'm told that they are not and they are doing the complete opposite by showing support for building on this green space, which only fuels the anger and frustration of local people and I'm sure this will come back to bite those councillors at a time when support matters to them!

The anger and frustration goes further now with plans by the Council to sell off parts of Calderstones Park following the move of Beechley Riding Stables for the disabled. There is also the most wonderful 'ride on' model railway that has existed at Calderstones Park giving generations of young people so much pleasure and fun over the years, and this too is also under threat of being lost on a whim. Greed is taking over from proper consideration of what local residents want, and it has to stop!

Over recent weeks residents have raised concern about youths gathering on Woolton Woods towards the back of the youth centre and causing anti-social behaviour problems with signs of drug use. The area in question is quite secluded, but some prevention of this problem from becoming worse exists through the frequent use of the public footpath by members of the public, which runs through that wooded area.

What gives me great concern is the haven that will be created for these youths and for any other undesirables, if St Julie's School is built out onto the field.

This area will then be completely out of site and cut off by a massive building and no public will take the risk of walking through an area which will be dark

and unsafe. I'm amazed that St Julie's does not have serious concerns about this, particularly when their own students frequent this area to get too and from school. I was instrumental in helping the school get improved lighting for that area of Woolton Street because of reports of the girls being approached. I fear that the schools determination to encroach onto Woolton Woods will only compromise the safety of the students in that particular area. What a shame there has not been any foresight about this.

Whilst writing about schools, many residents may have received consultation notices about speed limits on residential roads throughout Woolton being regulated at 20 mph. Whilst I share a lot of people's thoughts about how this is going to be properly enforced in so many roads, which I think is impossible to do, I completely support the fact that speed of traffic should be brought down in these roads. However, what amazes me is that the Council has completely failed to include roads that these schemes were meant to have been created for such as where there are schools or children's playgrounds. For instance, in Church Road we have Bishop Martin School and two Churches with an elderly population.

There are no proposals to create 20 mph here. I have argued for years to place traffic calming outside Bishop Martin School and now the Council is even failing to simply create a 20mph zone. In Quarry Street we have a children's playground, where there has previously been a collision between a car and a child, and there is a nursery opposite. Once again, no proposal to include this within the 20 mph zone, which is ludicrous. I will certainly be raising this with the Council and hopefully by the time this goes to print both of these roads will be included.

“LAWS OF INTESTACY” If you die without a Will, then the Government will decide who will inherit your estate in accordance with the Laws of Intestacy; drawn up in the 1920’s, somewhat out of date; However, these laws state that your spouse may end up sharing your estate with your children or parents. Or if you are an unmarried couple, then your partner may not get anything.

If you do not make provision for young children, then the authorities will decide who is best placed to look after them. It can also mean that your partner (if you are not married) does not automatically become guardian of young children, even though he is the father.

An ex-spouse may be entitled to claim part or all of your estate in certain circumstances. Even if your ex-spouse cannot make a claim, the assets you leave in trust for your children may fall under their control.

The Point of a Will Some people have reservations regarding this matter, but the process need not turn out to be as upsetting and difficult as you might think. In fact, having made a Will gives you a feeling that you have done everything correctly and tied up all those loose ends.

But making sure that you have a Will is not enough; it has to be the right type of Will - one that is professionally drafted to take into account your wishes, and your personal and financial circumstances.

The correct Will can allow you to: • Specify whom you wish to inherit your estate, in what order and in what proportions so that you have comfort in the knowledge that your wishes will be carried out.

• Make specific legacies to family or friends or gifts to your favorite charities.

• Appoint suitable guardians for young children rather than leaving the decision to the Courts.

• Set up maintenance trusts for children to protect their inheritance until an age specified by you.

• Ensure the inheritance of your children or other beneficiaries should the survivor re-marry.

• Protect your share of the property from having to be sold to pay for the survivors future care fees, thus still having assets to leave to your family.

If you already have a Will, it is recommended that you review it every 2 to 5 years.

Sometimes your wishes may not have changed, but the value of your assets and the law may have.

Mark, Colin and Alice, your local Labour team Working for Woolton & Gateacre Dear resident(s), You may be aware that some concern was raised regarding the safety around the old Quarry in the centre of Woolton village recently. It seems that some vandals had damaged some of the fencing there and this had allowed them access to the top of the quarry which is an obvious danger.

Thankfully, after the matter was drawn to our attention we were able to arrange for Council Officers to address the damage as a matter of urgency – with the fencing now replaced and access to the top of the Quarry secured. In addition to this the matter was noted with Merseyside Police.

In cases like this it is much appreciated when residents take the time to contact us about potentially serious situations so those responsible can act quickly and address the problem. If you are worried about a particular location or know of anywhere that needs attention please don’t hesitate to let us know. We will do all we can to get issues addressed or get those responsible involved.

On a separate matter entirely you may be aware that Merseytravel launched their young person's ‘Myticket’ last year. The ticket costs £2 and allows the user unlimited bus travel on the day of purchase and has been very popular with young people on the bus network. Thankfully, the age eligibility for ‘Myticket’ has now been increased, meaning that anyone aged 18 years old and younger qualifies.

If you know of anyone who could take advantage of this please do let them know.

Anniversary and Heritage Celebrations On Saturday, September 12th, Woolton WI took part in the National Heritage Week by holding our own Anniversary Fair in the Simon Peter Centre. There was an exhibition of the talents of WI members, including craft, baking, photography, flower arranging and much more.

The Fair was a great success and raised £572.00 on the day.

In August we had our annual summer outing to Howarth, which proved to have a very interesting museum, bringing to life the austere life enjoyed by the Brontes on the beautiful but isolated Yorkshire Moors. We also enjoyed the village’s period atmosphere with its many vintage buildings, shops and cafes. In September we will take part in the National Centennial Fair, which will be held in Harrogate.

It has an independent cinema that opened years ago, And when they tried to close it us Wooltonians screamed NO There are some delicious restaurants, for you to stop and eat, And the pubs provide a welcome place for anyone to meet.

The village it's had changes over all these years Some that's brought it laughter and some that's brought it tears.

The war saw devastation but the sprit of the blitz, Meant the people pulled together to rid the world of fritz.

It used to have an abattoir owned by Mr Moffat But he sold it to a supermarket and made a massive profit.

There even was a library a place of rhyme and prose, But the council in its wisdom they ordered it to close.

The village was in uproar, so the people took the lead And opened up another place ,They call ticket to read.

So as you have discovered, in this little poem, Come to woolton anytime you'll always feel at home.
