“Happy New Year 2017 Everyone” Welcome to my THIRD bi-monthly edition of L15 Wavertree Times Community Magazine for February 2017. Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and so we open our 2017 edition.

I am ready now to jump in and give L15 all I’ve got, with a new year comes new opportunities- it’s a time when we can try new restaurants, try a new hairstyle,or get some home improvements done!

I would like to delve into our 3rd edition- first in 2017 and start this year as we mean to go on with a positive mental attitude and welcome all our new advertisers - theres lots, wishing them all the luck with their business ventures and thank old & new for all their tremendous support over the year 2016.

I have been so grateful for all your encouraging emails thanking me for launching L15 magazine & supplying articles & sending me pictures of Wavertree.

In this edition we have an letter from Edward Wilkins who wrote to me congratulating us regarding the article on The Mystery written by the Mystery team, which he was delighted with .

All I can say is -keep sending them as the more we receive it becomes your magazine not just mine and that’s good for the area.

The Co-op at Picton Clock also contacted me regarding a charity they are supporting for Katie who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in September 2013, Katie's strength and resilience was recognised when she won the Pride of Merseyside Courage Award in 2015.

Katie’s parents have now been told by the Doctors in Alder Hey Oncology that their beautiful Katie has relapsed and her little body is full of cancer again....

They are now faced with raising £120,000 to send Katie to America for life saving treatment so that she can keep on smiling.

Co-Op have set up various fund raising ideas to support the family - I am sure if you can visit Co-op you will see & support such a worthy cause.

Friends of the Mystery Park Getting involved in your community can bring all sorts of rewards. Being the first to know what’s going on is a massive bonus, and making friends is another plus.

Then there is the good feeling you get from knowing that you have done a good job and done something useful for others.

Of course, you might not think that something as mundane and even grimy as picking up litter could give you that saintly glow, but there is nothing to compare with the feeling that everything is tidy and clean, knowing that you can sit down with a cup of tea and relax.

Wavertree Friends of the Mystery Park has got all sorts of things planned for 2017 and the more people we have to help, the easier it will be to achieve our aims. We’re constantly looking for more committee members to spread the workload - it’s fun and not a chore, getting involved with like-minded people who may live in the street right next to yours, but who you might otherwise never get to meet. If you don’t want to be on the committee, just come along to one of our events. We promise it’s fun.

This year we are trying to plan much more in advance, to make it easier for more people to get involved. Litter picking dates for your diary include Sunday 12th March and Saturday 8th April (from 10.30am, meet outside the Aquatics centre), and after that we plan to hold monthly litter picks on the 2nd weekend of every month, alternating between Saturdays and Sundays. Look out for the timetable arriving in The Mystery Park noticeboard soon!

The AGM is on 13th March to be held in the Aquatics Centre at 7.30pm, everyone is welcome.

Please come along and meet us - get involved and hear more about what we are doing in the park.

Already we have taken part in the RSPB Birdwatch at the end of January, and are waiting for the results. Two of our committee members, Rachel Durney and Ella Tearre, are liaising with Wheels for all to try to organise Saturday cycle rides in the park for disabled children. Contact them via our Facebook page if you know someone who would enjoy this activity. Our first tree planting was a great success – our tiny trees eventually went in at the top of the park next to Grant Avenue. Our plan had been to plant to fill the gaps in the main avenues, but they turned out to be the ‘wrong kind of trees’.

We hope to have another tree planting very soon, with slightly bigger trees - although we don’t yet have a date for that.

In other news, we’ve heard on the grapevine that Scottish Power are planning to lay a new cable across the park, from the corner by the school to the substation by the exercise equipment. They hope to be able to avoid making a trench across the park and are waiting for permission from the city council.

Finally, Smithdown Road Festival is from 29th April to 1st May, when there will be a stage on the field next to the bowling green.

Our National Health Service is in crisis and I am asking you to help.

Under the Tories, our NHS is underfunded and understaffed. Nationally, around 3.9 million people are on waiting lists, 1.8 million people are waiting four hours or more in A&E, one in four patients are having to wait a week or more to see their GP, and social care is approaching a ‘tipping point’ according to the regulator.

Here in Liverpool, the Royal, Broadgreen and University Hospital Aintree have all issued alerts this month because of this crisis. That is why I have written to the Royal’s chief executive after patients were being treated in the backs of ambulances outside the hospital and elective surgery, including some cancer operations, was cancelled.

The Royal is not unique - dedicated staff being let down by a funding crisis, increasing numbers of people with mental health problems attending A&E and cuts to local authority social care: all these issues are contributing to increasing pressure for bed spaces across the country.

Constituents who have contacted me have been full of praise for the kindness and dedication of NHS staff who work so hard 24 hours a day, but are dismayed at the state of our NHS. These views reflect my own experience of using the NHS. As well as the NHS going through the largest financial squeeze in its history, we have seen £4.6 billion cut from social care budgets, leaving councils like Liverpool on the edge.

We need extra funding for social care to be brought forward by the government to help hospitals cope, and for a new funding settlement for the NHS and social care to be part of the March Budget so that councils like Liverpool’s can provide the social care people need and deserve.

The Tory government opposed the motion brought by the Opposition in Parliament and continues to ignore calls for extra funding for the NHS. The Tory response is to blame overstretched GPs for the problems caused by government cuts.

Thinking of growing old comfortably?

At our last council meeting we had a debate about the problems of the NHS. In truth it was not much of a debate more than of the standard schoolboy playground exercise which passes for rationality in the Council Chamber. Essentially the differences of opinion were simple. The Labour motion wanted a national demonstration about the lack of money. Incredibly the council on a motion from the Mayor asked the Mayor to write to the Prime Minister asking her to join a demonstration against her own government. WE did not think that this was likely or useful.

We moved instead an amendment which would have encouraged the Political Parties to work together on this major crisis in the NHS. We also suggested how to find ÂŁ1 million by cutting out the number of bureaucrats and political placements in the council. Put simply we do not believe that just putting money into the NHS is the answer, although more money is required.

We believe that we need to deal more with public health, which stops people becoming ill, and social care, which gets people out of hospital and back into their own or other residential care rapidly. At any one time 30% of hospital beds in Liverpool are occupied by people who do not medically need to be there but cannot leave because there is now place or service to enable them to do so.

My own thoughts on getting old are being to surface. I pick up my pension from next January!

That has led me to think much more about how I shape my retirement and how I work with my family so that they can help Erica and I as we age as we helped them as they grew up. Being nice to the kids and grandkids seems to be a top priority for this!!

We need to change the way that we do things inside social and health care because if we just carry on the way we are the system will be overwhelmed. We need to consider what individuals; communities and families must do to care for each other. We then need to ask how the council and NHS can work together with individuals; families and communities to help them stay well.

Only when those first two steps have been completed should the council or NHS step in as the total provider of services and accommodation.

The political parties can work together on health issues and need to. I very much appreciate the work that Labour MP Lucian Berger does on mental health issues.

In fact I said so when I gave evidence at the Health Select Committee of the House of Commons on national suicide prevention strategies.

News from The Wavertree Society OUR HERITAGE PLAQUES Over the past five years we have installed eleven of our specially-designed green Heritage Plaques on various buildings and monuments in and around Wavertree village. The plaques were manufactured locally - by Photocast Products Ltd of Speke - and paid for by the Society using some of the proceeds from our book “Discovering Historic Wavertree�. Worldwide Success of “Peaky Blinders” leads to launch of Filming Locations Tours of Liverpool A series of coach tours around filming locations of cult BBC gangster programme “Peaky Blinders” has been launched by Blue Badge Guide Julie Kershaw in and around Liverpool to take advantage of its worldwide success.

A Member of the Institute of Tourist Guides, Julie is also a huge fan of the show which films largely in Liverpool, despite being set in 1920s Birmingham. She also runs the biggest unofficial Twitter account about the show and has been flabbergasted by the worldwide appeal of the show.

Guide Julie Kershaw says:

“There are fans all over the world and they are starting to find their way to Liverpool in an attempt to find some of the filming locations. It is particularly popular in France and the US. I’ve been trading as a guide for 11 years as Liverpool Entente Cordiale Tours having lived five years in France so can offer tours in French and I expect Americans arriving by cruise ship to be another potential market. Although they will be hard pushed to beat the enthusiasm amongst the British, myself included. Fans are guaranteed not only a professional, qualified guide but also someone who shares their passion and has done hundreds of hours of research.”

Currently six tours are on offer: 3 Peaky Blinders tours of different lengths and 3 “mixed” tours which combine viewing filming locations with a City, Beatles or Football tour, the latter being designed to prevent conflict when not all members of a group have seen the show.

Even at Peaky Blinders locations stops, a full historical commentary will be also given so nonfans needn’t fear being left out. Initially aimed at groups, tours will also be arranged for individuals to book if there is demand.

Hi Katie supporters... just a quick update on the circumstances we are now facing with Katie we know how ver y confusing this journey can be, especially when it is so unpredictable and changeable! The great news is that Katie is in remission!

Almost miraculous news given the prognosis we were given at Christmas and of course this should be celebrated! BUT we have been told by consultants that we should continue to fundraise for Katie in the event that an alternative treatment may need to be accessed with some urgency should the current plan be unsuccessful. There is one main reason they are suggesting this, Katie is not on a relapse plan but an initial diagnosis plan - this is not typical for a child in Katie's circumstances.

This is because the last time Katie was treated she was unable to cope with even this - the lowest intensity chemotherapy plan.

She recieved only 25% of the treatment she was expected to on maintainance, simply because of the way she reacted to the medication. We are hoping and praying that she is able to stick to the plan and receive the full protocol this time, but we have no guarantees with this, her body chemistry is so sen-

sitive to medications and already on day one her body is reacting to medication she has received.

The circumstances are that unusual around Katie's treatment plan that consultants are taking her case to a national meeting for guidance, knowledge and support - it is in essence a trial.

The news that she is in remission is amazing and what it has done is given us extra time and reduced the urgency that was around at Christmas time.

WI CHILDWALL We've had a busy couple of months at Childwall WI. After our successful Christmas trip to York we had our members Christmas meeting with quizzes, bingo and festive tunes.

A party open to all was held two weeks later and a fab time and sore feet was had by all.

Straight into 2017 saw lots of our members re-joining and our quiz team continued to practice with Woolton WI for the Lancashire federation fun quiz night. Supper club at Christakis was another successful night with 20 of us tucking into tradition Greek fayre.

The Lancashire federation fun quiz night took us to Rainford where one of our teams won this heat. Full results are due in March.

In February our monthly meeting was very well attended and we had a calligraphy lesson.

Our reading group is due to meet in mid-February.

Holy Trinity Church ~ Wavertree Mothering Sunday is an old, church custom which has evolved into something much bigger.

Traditionally it is held on the 4th Sunday of Lent, the season which leads up to Easter. Although it's often called Mothers' Day it has no connection with the American festival of that name. Traditionally, it was a day when children, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and family. Today it is a day when children give presents, flowers, and home-made cards to their mothers, but there is more to it than that.

Centuries ago, children who worked as domestic servants would be allowed to visit their mothers on this day, and they would collect wild flowers as they walked to their home. Probably they would go to church together, to the church close to their home, their ‘mother church’.

Today, many churches will prepare flowers for children to give as gifts.

Here at Holy Trinity, flowers are given to each mother regardless of age and to those ladies who the children love and want to give flowers to.

No woman goes home empty handed on this special day.

If you would like to revisit the past and receive some flowers as well, you will be welcome at Holy Trinity on 2nd April for our 10am family service.

Two weeks later on Sunday 16th April it’s Easter!

We start very early with a Dawn Service at 5.50am which is followed by breakfast. An Easter Egg hunt in the churchyard for all the children starts at 9.50pm before we return to church at 10am for a glorious, happy celebration of Christ’s resurrection and we would of course be delighted to see you on this special day.

WAVERTREE REPORT

It was two years ago that Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler launched his college for Merseyside teenagers wanting to further their education - both on and off the pitch.

Since then the Fowler Education & Football Academy (FEFA) has gone from strength to strength.

The list of success stories from the Wavertree Sports Parkbased centre is impressive with a 100% pass rate and student numbers doubling to around 75. Now they have ambitious plans to expand further as they kick-start their recruitment drive for this coming September.

There's a strong team of sports science staff including Neil Parsley, who was the England rugby team's strength and conditioning coach at the last World Cup. Results off the pitch in BTEC, personal training, gym instructor, lifeguard and FA coaching courses have been just as eye-catching. Some 80% of their leavers have university offers and FEFA currently have six students working at Wavertree Sports Park as a result of the qualifications they have gained with the college. Academy principal Brian McGorry said: “When Robbie first launched it, people thought it was just another ex-pro setting up a football college and asked 'what's he got to do with education?

“But actually Robbie has done his UEFA A Licence, he's doing his Pro Licence and he's looking to do a masters in sports psychology. He really believes in education. “Everything we promised we would do has happened. Our retention level is 89% - way above the national average. “We've done well football wise but we've also shown how credible this is as an educational institution. We set out from the start to be a beacon of excellence. We've got expertise both in the classroom and on the pitch.”

Liverpool-born McGorry, the former Hereford and Torquay midfielder, has been teaching for some 18 years. He worked at Liverpool Community College and then taught the BTEC course at St Margaret's and Cardinal Heenan before teaming up with Fowler.

“Parents want their kids to be happy and they want them to achieve,” he added. “No other college in the country offers the same set of qualifications as we do. They leave here at 18 or 19 with either a path into higher education, a path into employment or a path into a scholarship in America.

They come away with real qualifications which can get them jobs.”

Scott Fowler, Robbie's younger brother, is FEFA's head of operations.

From September they will also run swimming and tennis courses after being approached by City of Liverpool Swimming Club and Liverpool Tennis Academy.

“We've achieved a lot already and we've got a lot of exciting things planned,” Fowler said,“The education side is so strong here that experts in swimming and tennis asked us to get involved. “The first thing we mention with parents is the education. In the eyes of our funders, football is enrichment, it's about what you do in the classroom.

“We're fortunate to have some outstanding facilities at Wavertree from the 3G to the 50m pool, the track and the gym.

“Including the tennis and swimming we want another 60 students come September and we want this to become an educational sports science hub.”

Letter to the Editor…

Margaret, I have always objected against the unsolicited advertising material that is continuously being shoved through my letter box but was agreeably surprised when L15 Wavertree Times dropped on my doormat. The varying types of businesses supporting this venture gives ample scope for anyone seeking an improvement in their living standards or simply indulge in a bit of pampering - it's all there within these colourful pages.

In addition there promises to be further interesting features about the history of our district and the many folk who care for it, working to ensure a secure environment for our children.

This magazine might be an exciting means to that end if more in our neighbourhood get involved.

Remember it is a free issue which costs a lota dosh to produce so why don't we all give a bit of our time to submit interesting information to encourage the efforts of the Editor.

One final point - The advertisements are largely printed - as they should be - but I had some difficulty reading Margaret's editorial also the piece about the Mystery.

A bigger typeface solving the problem would mean more pages so I guess I'll need to buy stronger spectacles.
