OCTOBER 2021
Nii Nunoo - 2021-2022 SPE-GCS Chair The upsurge of the delta variant cases in the United States has slowed the US economic recovery from the COVID-19 Pandemic because of the public still being uncomfortable returning to normal operations. According to an article published by the Houston public media, the new strain makes up more than 75% of new covid-19 cases in the Houston area. In Texas, new cases are up 92%, and hospitalization is up 49%. The gulf coast section has done a phenomenal job following the CDC rules and guidelines in all our events. We have adopted a hybrid approach to our events, still delivering high-level technical content to our members. For those not comfortable attending an in-person event, there is always a virtual option present. As previously discussed, we are going to focus on a few key areas this year. We are first going to take a closer look at our Membership. This review and assessment will help us learn how to engage by understanding the needs of our current and potential members, and hopefully increase the Membership of this great section. The section has established a task force to investigate the drastic drop in membership and how best to boost our membership, create a platform to network, share ideas, and build a technical tool kit. The committee will be led by John Vozniak, an old-time member and friend of the section. The committee will be reporting back to the board of directors with their findings in 90days. One of the key things the committee will do is survey the Gulf Coast members. I plead with you all to take active participation in the survey. This will help the section understand the current issues and discuss how best they can be addressed.
Regarding industry updates and news, referencing an IEA report for September, Global oil demand has been estimated to decline for the past three months due to the resurgence of COVID. Hurricane Ida also contributed by taking 1.7 mb/d of oil production off the market along the US Gulf Coast at the end of August, with potential supply losses from the storm approaching 30MB. According to the article. There is a light at the end of the tunnel with oil prices going into the winter months. Oil prices should see a shift closer to balance this month if OPEC+ continues to unwind production cuts. The introduction of the COVID booster shot should bring some confidence in people to return to normalcy. Within SPE-GCS, I am pleased to see that the section is getting back to organizing more technical, networking events. All our events will include the new norm of a virtual option. This illustrates that the section embraces the challenges we face and uses technology and creativity to share technical content. This month, I will highlight a few events: Enabling Pressure Transient Analysis in Drawdown, Analytics, and automation to improve drilling performance and the Effect of Surface Data Acquisition Methods on Well Performance Evaluation. You can find more information and registration details in the section events calendar. I would like to close by recognizing all the hard work behind the scenes in every sector of the Gulf Coast Section. Considering that all volunteers have a day job, it is impressive to see everything accomplished and with such efficiency. Finally, let’s not forget the superb management and guidance provided by Kristin Washam who has kept the boat sailing throughout the Pandemic. All the best! Until next month, Nii Ahele Nunoo

An onshore injection well in Brazil is the site of an allelectronic, multizone intelligent well completion being tested for eventual use by Petrobras in its deepwater Campos basin wells. The World Renewable Energy Report lists the following as the forecasted order of renewable energy contributions for 2001-10: 43% biomass, 27% wind, 15% solar, 9% small-scale hydro, 4% geothermal and 2% others. The American Petroleum Institute reports that US jet fuel deliveries fell nearly 10 percent in September due to reduced air travel following terrorist attacks.

The US Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) issues an initial round of citations resulting from the Joint Investigation Team's final report on the April 2010 Macondo well blowout and crude oil spill. Fifteen citations are issued Oct. 12 as Incidents of Non-Compliance (INCs) to BP PLC, the well's operator; offshore drilling contractor Transocean Ltd; and well services supplier Halliburton Co. Saudi Arabia strongly condemns what it calls the "sinful and abhorrent" attempt to assassinate its ambassador to Washington, a day after the US claimed Iran was behind the plot. Former chief of Saudi intelligence Prince Turki AlFaisal tells an oil conference that there was overwhelming evidence that Iran was behind a plot to kill the Saudi ambassador and that it must "pay the price." Kinder Morgan Inc. reports it will acquire all outstanding shares of El Paso Corp. in a transaction creating the largest midstream and the fourth-largest energy company in North America, with an enterprise value of $94 billion and 80,000 miles of pipelines, the companies claim.

OCTOBER 2016
Three groups that support the Dakota Access crude-oil pipeline and similar oil and gas transportation projects separately express concerns on Oct. 11 after protesters broke into facilities near the Canadian border and elsewhere and tried to close pipeline valves manually. Fans of energy regulation might regret a rare success rooted in the US government's expansionism of the 1970s. Some of them are suggesting the decade wasn't so bad. Maybe they’re too young to remember the service-station lines, daisy-chain corruption and unseemly contortions of a government trying to fix its mistakes without admitting to having made any. Alaska's government formally nominates the Beaufort and Chukchi seas and Cook Inlet for inclusion in the 2017-22 federal Outer Continental Shelf management program being prepared by the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. The action is necessary to assure that one lease sale in each area remains in the program, Gov. Bill Walker (I) says in an Oct. 6 letter to US Sec. of the Interior Sally Jewell.

THE REST OF THE YARN This month, we meet two of the guests from the Brown and Hunt families. The white-haired figure shaking President Nixon’s hand with patrician reserve was George Brown, head of one of the world’s largest construction firms and a primary backer of Johnson and Connally. His company, Brown & Root, had participated in all the major construction in Vietnam, on Project Mohole in the Pacific Ocean, on NASA’s Houston Space Center and on countless other massive projects around the world, many of them related to war. Brown’s eyesight had begun to fail, but his political acumen remained intact, as did his elevated position among his peers. Quite different in appearance was the short, plump Nelson Bunker Hunt, a heavy supporter of Nixon’s, who wore a shy, gap-toothed grin. The third son of H. L. Hunt, Bunker was a formidable force in his own right in financial America, and

NORTHSIDE Boom or Bust: Crystal Ball Thoughts for 2022 The US oilfield markets have shown a remarkable recovery from the painful declines in early 2020 brought on by the double whammy of crude oil oversupply and a pandemic-induced demand contraction. The US rig count has doubled from the same period a year ago, and broad signs point toward a continued economic recovery. But what does the remainder of 2021, and more importantly 2022, look like for the oil patch? This presentation will review the latest Spears & Associates research and identify some of the key trends that will be in play in the future.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT Development of Elastomer Compounds and Seals: A Case Study in Upstream Oil & Gas When the upstream oil and gas market pushes the frontiers of technology, the effort encompasses many components, including)-rings. O-rings are typically manufactured from elastomer compounds, which have different properties depending on the raw materials from which they’re composed. This presentation will walk through the basics of elastomer technology and the methodology for developing a compound that achieves a desired balance of properties. A typical test plan, from initial screening of candidate compounds to final validation testing, will be reviewed. The audience will gain an enhanced understanding of how best to collaborate with elastomer compound and seal manufacturers on innovation aligned with the next generation of oilfield equipment.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP An Old Industry with a New Look: Geothermal Energy in 2021 Though the geothermal energy industry has been around for over half a century and taps into a nearly limitless resource, it makes up a surprisingly modest percentage of the US energy mix. Previously held back by a lack of technical innovation and policy support, geothermal could be primed for a breakthrough of significant proportions. This talk reviews the technology innovation, market dynamics and political and regulatory support contributing to the shift in modern geothermal energy potential.
SARAH JEWETT
Sarah Jewett is the director of strategy for Fervo Energy. An engineer by training, Jewett discovered an early passion for energy and climate change mitigation while working for renewable energy startups during college. Driven to learn about the fossil fuel industry, she began her career running hydraulic fracturing crews for Schlumberger across the American West and Alaska. Between Schlumberger and Fervo, Jewett worked for Select Energy Services in corporate development. She has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA/BE from Dartmouth College.
WESTSIDE You Really Can Have It All: Lower Well Costs and More Production The optimization of completions in unconventional reservoir wells has proceeded at a slow pace through trial and error. This has led our industry to creep toward an optimum design through populating statistical models with thousands of wells. But what if one could take a relative handful of wells, analyze the production and completions used in them, and then “leap” to significant improvements in well costs and production results? This presentation will present a methodology that achieves this goal. The data to populate this process already exists, the analyses are inexpensive and the benefits are significant. Actual case histories will be presented. Invigorating discussion will follow. Just bring an open mind!

DRILLING Anchor: Chevron’s First Deepwater Subsea 20M Project Worldwide This presentation will discuss the Anchor Project, Chevron’s first deepwater subsea 20M project worldwide. Located in the Green Canyon area of the Gulf of Mexico, the Anchor wells will be drilled in approximately 5,000 feet of water. Challenges to field development include deep reservoir depths, high reservoir pressure and high wellhead pressures that result in Anchor being classified as an HPHT field. Because of these high pressures and HPHT classification, several new pieces of well equipment had to be developed and qualified by Chevron and its business partners. Further, compliance with BSEE CFR HPHT regulations and policies was followed to gain regulatory approval to use the equipment in the Anchor field.
TOMMY CHASE
Tommy Chase first joined Chevron in 2012 as part of the Gulf of Mexico business unit. In 2019, he began working as the subsea BOP reliability engineer for the Discoverer Inspiration drillship in Houston, and later that year transitioned into his current role as a drilling engineer on the Anchor Project. He holds a bachelor’s degree in bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh and a bachelor’s in petroleum engineering from Marietta College.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Past Scholarship Winner: Frank Kubes The Scholarship Committee conducted a survey of past recipients of the SPEGCS scholarship. If you’re considering donating to the SPE-GCS scholarship fund or hiring an SPE-GCS scholarship winner, you’ll be glad to know that the program has enjoyed considerable success over the past six decades. Here is Frank Kubes’s story:
“The SPE scholarship was a huge factor in my decision to attend a four-year major university and study petroleum engineering." I’ve learned that change is the one constant in the oil and gas industry. I’ve been in the industry now for more than 13 years, working at several companies in various roles of increasing responsibility, and on small and large projects alike, from operations to finance and planning. My
proudest achievement is becoming a licensed professional engineer. The SPE scholarship was a huge factor in my decision to attend a four-year major university and study petroleum engineering. I relied heavily on scholarships and on working before and during college to help pay for my education and the expenses that come with living on your own while pursuing a degree. The SPE scholarship was one of the more substantial scholarships I received, and as a smalltown kid, the fact that I was selected meant a lot to me. My advice to today’s students is not to underestimate yourself and think there are limits to what you can achieve. Be open to change and realize that the oil and gas industry can be very cyclical. The industry has morphed during my relatively short career, as it surely will again in the future. Stay on top of what others are doing in the industry and never stop learning. You may contact me at frank.kubes@dvn.com.

CONTINUING EDUCATION Carbon Capture, Utilization, Storage and the CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SRMS) As part of the international effort to combat global warming, significant attention is being given to ways to sequester carbon dioxide, which is a major contributor to the greenhouse effect. It is critical to have a universal means to record the storage volumes by recognizing the maturity of the projects to be implemented and the confidence that can be placed in the estimated sequestered volumes. This course will look at some of the ways in which carbon dioxide can be stored and provide a detailed review of the CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SRMS) framework prepared by the Society of Petroleum Engineers to classify and categorize the storage volumes. The course will include example calculations to show how storage quantities can be estimated.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
EVENT RECAP: INNOVATE COMMITEE Energy Leaders address ‘Resilient Innovation’ at 3rd Annual Innovation and Entrepreneurship Summit Houston – (August 25, 2021) – With the pandemic front and center, 2020 was anything but a normal year. Companies that failed to adapt fast enough were forced to close their doors, and the energy industry was no exception: jobs were lost, business strategies were shattered, and budgets were eliminated. The need for resiliency in the rough seas of the energy industry has never been greater. Smooth seas never made a skillful sailor, and this pandemic provides an opportunity to those who commit to and successfully execute significant innovation. To realize the positive benefits of disruption and change in our industry, the SPE-Gulf Coast Section hosted the 3rd annual Innovation and Entrepreneurship Summit (IES) in Houston, TX, July 13-14, 2021. The strategic theme of “Resilient Innovation” enabled addressing how firms respond to the current environment and economics of the energy industry, highlighting new customer needs and changing industry patterns. Keynote speakers discussed the role of the individual innovator, the impact of company culture upon innovation, and how and when partnerships with entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs enable success for all stakeholders. Industry experts from Houston, the US, and other countries served on multiple panel sessions, such as pivoting and changing successfully in the Energy Industry, applying conventional knowledge to new energy needs, and defining the innovation ecosystem that Houston requires to empower energy entrepreneurs. Complementing these Keynotes and Panels, IES brought back their interactive Shark-Tank event for 2021, along with some unique concepts and drama. A group of Houston Entrepreneurs began Shark-Tank by asking difficult, probing questions to the Sharks, representatives of Houston Private Equity and Venture Capital investors, which revealed critical insights into successfully starting an energy-technology company. Later, several Startups pitched their business to the Sharks and received some radical candor about their business model, technologies, and investment opportunities. Top Honors at Shark-Tank went to Houston’s inerG, Inc, as voted by the Sharks, Anax Power, from Wharton, NJ, as voted by the IES audience, and Revolution Turbine Technologies, from Asheville, NC,
OCTOBER 2021 receiving an Honorable Mention. IES 2021 incorporated innovation within their in-person event, recording the entire session of Keynotes, Panels, and Shark-Tank into 10+ hours of videos. SPE-Gulf Coast Section plans to deliver this content via their new On-Demand Content Library, allowing anyone to learn from our energy innovators and entrepreneurs. SPE-GCS Innovate Committee is expanding IES into a more extensive, annual program for the Houston Innovation and Energy Communities. The theme for 20212022, “Building Better Innovators and Entrepreneurs,” addresses enabling technologists, leaders, and investors to deliver value within the ever-changing energy industry. Innovate will host IES 2022 in April and will include a suite of entrepreneurial-focused business networking events throughout the year. A diversity of firms in the Energy Industry sponsored IES 2021: Polsinelli, Equinor Technology Ventures, Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures, Marathon Oil, Silicon Valley Bank, and Interface Fluidics. All profits from IES and Innovate events enable SPEGCS to fund Scholarships to energy-related academic disciplines, encouraging the best talent to participate in the Energy Industry and resolve complex technical and socio-economic challenges our communities face together.
