Simeon Eburi 2020-2021 SPE-GCS Chair SPE Volunteerism During Unprecedented Times I was asked a few months ago why SPE-GCS charges a registration fee for its webinars. Shouldn’t webinars or virtual events be free if there’s no in-person networking or lunch provided? If someone is attending from the comfort of their couch at home, should they pay? These are all relevant questions. I will share a few thoughts on event finances, the scholarship program and volunteering with SPE. SPE is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. SPE-GCS relies on the proceeds from events organized by volunteers to operate, carry out the mission of SPE and support the scholarship program. During great times, the section benefits from strong sponsorship support from companies. Sponsorships help balance our event revenue and expenses, lower registration fees and allow our events to be more profitable. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and during industry downturns, we receive fewer or smaller sponsorships, and event registrations also decline. The section has less funds to operate and fund scholarships. Not keeping our commitment to students and their families would be unacceptable. The section is very proud of its scholarship program. It provides up to four-year scholarships for high school seniors in the Houston area who attend US universities to pursue petrotech (engineering, geology, etc.) and other STEM degrees. The program also provides scholarships for at-risk students in the Houston area in partnership with Communities In Schools of Houston (CISH). In the past, the section supported over 90 scholars and up to $300K per year. We currently have a total of 39 students in the program and a $175K estimated budget, with scholarships of $4,000 per year for petrotechs. A Scholarship Endowment Fund (SEF) was established a few years ago to secure a more consistent source of funds in the future; an SEF status update will be provided at a later time.

Webinars and virtual events are less cost-intensive, provide a different experience than in-person events and require lower registration fees. The section offers reduced prices for MiTs and students. SPE volunteers dedicate their personal time and human energy to organize great technical events for members to participate from home. They seek out top industry speakers who also volunteer their time and expertise, at no cost, in support of SPE. The effort required to organize webinars is very similar to in-person events. The difference is the physical presence. This is what volunteering with SPE in unprecedented times looks like. I encourage our members to continue to register for events to support our hard-working volunteers and help raise funds for scholarships. In international news, Bloomberg reported that “Saudi Arabia cut pricing for oil sales in October." There’s a lot of speculation about what this means to the industry recovery. This is a reminder that the world is still recovering from the pandemic and its cascading effects on the industry. In the last few months, there was optimism that the oil price was steadily increasing and slowly stabilizing after the sharp decline in March. One way to describe the last few months is that the rate of change of the oil price curve was reducing over time, until September. This demonstrates the unpredictable nature of commodity prices and their high dependence on supply and demand forces. Within SPE-GCS, I am pleased to see that the section held many events in September, mostly virtual. This illustrates that the section is embracing the challenges we face and using technology and creativity to share technical content. I will highlight a few events this month: SPE Virtual ATCE 2020, drilling geomechanics training organized by the Continuing Education Committee; and the SPE Distinguished Lecturer presentation on fracture model calibration for conventional and unconventional rocks. Gulf Coast Section The Gulf Coast Section (GCS) was established on December 13, 1935. The mission of GCS is part of our Bylaws which were amended by vote of the Board of Directors on February 16, 2016, and by vote of the general membership on April 20, 2017.

SPE-GCS MISSION The mission of the Section shall be the promotion of mutual cooperation in furthering the objectives of the Society of Petroleum Engineers International, Inc. This shall be accomplished by: I. Providing forums that afford members the opportunity to upgrade and maintain professional competence. II. Providing social interaction that increases member participation in Section activities as a whole, while striving to maintain the integrity of the Section. III. Supporting programs in local primary and secondary schools to encourage students to develop their abilities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. IV. Operators, including Syncrude Canada Ltd. and Suncor Inc., which operate existing Canadian oil sands projects report having a number of projects under development or on the drawing board worth an estimated $51 billion (CAD). These projects are expected to extend oil sands production from about 600,000 b/d to an expected 1.9 million b/d within a decade. Last month’s attack on the WTC is not forecast to significantly impact hydrocarbon demand, as economic growth is expected to be sluggish. Military demand, on the other hand, is expected to spike significantly.

"With numerous wells expected to be shut in and capacity coming online, 2009 is shaping up to be an ugly year in North America.” Reliance Industries Ltd., Mumbai, and Niko Resources Ltd., Calgary, begin a new chapter in India’s hydrocarbon production with the startup of the MA oil field in the Bay of Bengal. The MA oil field, India’s first deepwater hydrocarbon producing area, has become one of the world’s fastest greenfield deepwater developments.

THE REST OF THE YARN This month... Will McCarthy become the subject of a great Texas novel, or just fade away? Probably the best-known female novelist of mid-twentieth century America was Edna Ferber. She was a creature of effete New York literary salons, a witty, headstrong member of the Algonquin Round Table, and a lesbian, all of which made her an improbable chronicler of muscular, nouveau riche Texas. She had been famous since the mid-1920’s, when one of her early novels, “So Big,” won the Pulitzer Prize. Ferber had been mulling a novel about Texas since at least 1939, when she first toured the state. At that time, she found Texas too foreign, too outlandish, too big to easily grasp. There was a great American novel there, she decried, but not hers. “Let Michener write it,” she told a friend. All during the 1940’s, however, Texas called to her. Though Ferber was always vague about details, her decision to actually tackle a Texas novel coincided with the 1948-49 boom in stories about its new millionaires. “Texas,” she once explained, “was leaping out at one from the pages of books, plays, magazines, newspapers. The rest of the United States regarded it with a sort of fond consternation. It was

Cenovus Energy Inc., Calgary, agrees to sell its Palliser crude oil and natural gas assets in southeastern Alberta to a joint venture between privately held Torxen Energy and Schlumberger Ltd. for $1.3 billion (CAD) in cash. Calgary-based Torxen, which will be the operator, is led by President and Chief Executive Officer John Brannan, the former long-time chief operating officer of Cenovus.

The Rink/McCarthy protagonist brings all the main characters together in the book’s early scenes for the massive opening of his “Conquistador Hotel” in the sprawling city of “Hermoso.” The book was released to immense sales in 1952, and four years later it was turned into a motion picture starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and a young actor named James Dean.

I joined the SPE in 2002, two years after joining the oil and gas industry with Schlumberger. I presented my first SPE paper in 2005. What SPE study groups, committees, or volunteer events have you been involved in? I became an active volunteer with the SPE Delta Section while working in New Orleans, where I served in different roles over the course of six years. In 2019, I was chosen to serve as the Gulf Coast Section secretary, and currently I'm serving as Programs chair.

What is your REAL job and educational background? In 2016, I started Royal Oaks Energy Services to provide technical and business consulting. I studied chemical engineering at the Universidad Metropolitana, Caracas, Venezuela. What is your favorite thing about SPE? The organization is evolving as our industry requires, while keeping its roots and focus.

Michael Lattibeaudiere is the regional vice president of the Permian Basin asset for Marathon Oil. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001 with a degree in petroleum engineering, he began his career with ConocoPhillips, where he worked in multiple roles. In 2009, Lattibeaudiere joined Rosetta Resources as a completions engineer, where he advanced to the role of general manager of Permian Basin operations. When Rosetta Resources and Noble Energy merged, Lattibeaudiere became the director of operations for Permian. He has co-authored five SPE papers and served as a committee member for the SPE applied technical workshops.

COMPUTER DONATION PROGRAM

SPE-GCS Partners with iEducateUSA and City of Houston to Support Texas Students In mid-March 2020, school districts throughout Texas started to conduct classes online and continued through the end of the school year. In mid-May, it was brought to our attention by iEducateUSA, a non-profit educational organization, and the City of Houston that there were many students in the greater Houston area that were unable to participate in virtual online learning because of a lack of a home computer. Without online access, these students would fall behind in their studies. The SPE-GCS thought this was an excellent opportunity to help our community. To date, 33 members and friends have responded to the need with 77 computers, from iMacs to other laptop brands. All computers were picked up from their homes or offices, cataloged and taken to Comp-U-Dopt, a non-profit

corporation. Comp-U-Dopt cleaned and refurbished the computers then loaded them with an operating system as well as educational apps. They distributed the computers to needy students within the greater Houston area via a lottery system. All donors received a document from Comp-U-Dopt noting their donation, which could be used for tax purposes. Three corporations also donated computers, including NOV (~540 computers), ConocoPhillips (~120 computers) and Baker Hughes (~25 computers). All of the computers will go to needy students throughout the Houston area. We thank all of you who have participated in the program for your generosity. COMPLETIONS AND PRODUCTION Fracture Model Calibration for Conventional and Unconventional Rocks Fracture growth modeling has seen two dramatic changes over the last two decades. First, the completions industry found a way to economically stimulate unconventional rocks. Second, fracture modelers “got their eyes” through commercial development and proliferation of direct fracture diagnostics, such as micro-seismic fracture mapping. Direct observations from fracture mapping enabled calibration of fracture models, resulting in a roller coaster ride of changes to frac modelers’ understanding of how fractures grow. To explain these observations, modelers incorporated new physical mechanisms into their models. This lecture will show how model calibration has become a vital part of the fracture modeling process, creating ever more realistic fracture growth predictions and becoming a valuable tool in evaluating economic tradeoffs.

Dr. Leen Weijers is VP of engineering at Liberty Oilfield Services and served as the business manager at Liberty’s founding. Weijers worked at Pinnacle Technologies from 1995 to 2011, where he oversaw development of a commercial fracture growth simulator, FracproPT. Weijers has authored dozens of publications and he completed his doctoral research at the Faculty of Mining and Petroleum Engineering at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.

NORTHSIDE Freshwater Neutral – Managing Water Use and Giving Back to the Environment This presentation will focus on managing water use and giving back to the environment, including highlighting challenges, lessons and best practices encountered when companies implement efforts to become better stewards of freshwater resources. Specific case studies related to Southwestern Energy’s “Freshwater Neutral” initiative, achieved in 2016 within all operating divisions, will be reviewed. A small multi-disciplinary team evaluated all elements within the operational water life cycle, identifying cost-competitive ways to optimize the company’s freshwater usage. This reduced freshwater requirements by up to 30 percent in some operating areas and saved the operator over $20 million.

Karen Olson is a senior completions advisor for Well Data Labs, a modern web application built to manage, analyze and report frac data. Olson previously served as the director of technologies for Southwestern Energy Company. She been a completion/reservoir engineer for more than 36 years and an active SPE member for just as long. Olson holds a BS degree in petroleum engineering from LSU and an MS in petroleum engineering from Texas A&M, where she serves on the engineering department's Industry Advisory Board.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT Current Innovations in US Natural Gas Development Since 2010, US natural gas production has almost doubled, reaching 95 BCFD in 2019. This increase was driven in part by investments in the San Juan, DJ and Ark-La-Tex basins. The abundant supply ensured low energy prices domestically and fueled rising US Gulf Coast LNG exports. Despite this, early 2020 US natural gas prices fell to their lowest level in over 20 years due to COVID-19 demand destruction, challenging natural gas investors. In the face of these challenges, several innovative companies continue to create value by focusing on development efficiencies and production optimization. WESTSIDE Using Multidisciplinary Data Gathering to Evaluate eXtreme Limited-Entry Completion Design This paper presents a case study of the successful implementation of XLE (eXtreme Limited-Entry) with interdisciplinary evaluation and validation. The case study resulted in significant improvements and cost reductions in the completion designs. XLE was implemented in two groups of wells in Williston Basin, ND. The paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of the completion diagnostic measurements and the subsequent integration of those measurements, with detailed geologic characterizations and "stage level" well performance evaluations. This multidisciplinary approach resulted in more reliable completion optimization decisions and a shorter cycle time from measurement to implementation.

Apiwat (Ohm) Lorwongngam is a completion engineering advisor with the Hess Bakken asset team, where he is responsible for all development wells in the asset, from the planning and design phase through flowback operation. Lorwongngam received his bachelor’s degree from Chiangmai University and his master’s degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Oklahoma. His experience includes production, operations, well integrity and completions engineering.

RESERVOIR CO2 Foam Pilot in a West Texas Field: Design, Operation and Results This discussion will describe the design, implementation and results of a CO2 foam pilot in a mature CO2 flood in West Texas. The objective of the pilot was to demonstrate improved conformance/sweep efficiency of the CO2 foam over CO2 WAG injection. While changes in injection rate and injection profile confirmed the formation of strong foam near the wellbore and redistribution of fluids in the injectors, oil response was weak, with significant oil gain observed in one of the four patterns. The comprehensive monitoring program in this pilot provides new insights into effectiveness of CO2 foam in actual field applications. The results from this pilot may help to better screen and design future foam injection pilots.

Deepanshu Kumar has 15 years of experience as a reservoir engineer and currently leads the reserves estimation and reporting team for unconventional assets in the New Mexico Delaware Basin at Oxy. Prior to joining Oxy, Kumar worked as a reservoir engineer at BP. He has an MS in petroleum engineering from Stanford and a bachelor’s in petroleum engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Past Scholarship Winner: Judy Dalrymple Buie The Scholarship Committee conducted a survey of past recipients of the SPEGCS scholarship. If you’re considering donating to the SPE-GCS scholarship fund or hiring an SPE-GCS scholarship winner, you’ll be glad to know that the program has enjoyed considerable success over the past six decades. Here is Judy Dalrymple Buie's story:

"Receiving the SPEGCS scholarship inspired me to search for summer internships within the oil and gas industry, which put my college classes in context and effectively seeded my career path." I have been an SPE member for over 25 years. Receiving the SPE-GCS scholarship inspired me to search for summer internships within the oil and gas industry, which put my college classes in context and effectively seeded my career path. Coincidentally, my first "real job" in the industry was working in the same group with a woman who interviewed me for the SPE-GCS scholarship,

in the same building where the interview was conducted, where I then worked for eight years of my career! I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in the industry, from swing ropes onto platforms as a facility engineer in the GoM; falling in love with the subsurface as a reservoir engineer; managing fields through various life cycles; getting a bird's eye view of different businesses and exploring strategic options in corporate roles; stretching and growing in countless ways co-leading a startup company; doing a myriad of deals; learning new tools and perspectives with private equity exposure; and building and repositioning businesses through booms and busts. The highlight through it all has been partnering with smart, fun, hardworking people and teams along the way, including at ARCO, Vastar, BP, Newfield, RPM, KKR and many others; working inside E&P companies, side by side with private equity and management teams; and now, as I am enjoying board roles with private and public energy companies.

CONTINUING EDUCATION Drilling Geomechanics This course provides an introduction of topics related to drilling geomechanics. It is recommended for reservoir, production, drilling and completion engineers, earth scientists, asset team managers and other oilfield professionals who want to understand the basic principles of rock mechanics as it applies to drilling wells safely. It is especially useful for those who do not have a geomechanics background or hands-on experience in determining rock properties from the lab/ log data or in designing mud weights for vertical or inclined wellbores. The course describes the step-by-step procedure for developing a 1-D mechanical earth model starting from log data and integrating available lab and drilling data for calibration. Mohammed Azeemuddin is a senior geomechanics specialist at Chevron. Azeemuddin started his career as a civil engineer with CH2M Hill. Before joining Chevron, he worked as a research engineer and associate professor at KFUPM and as a senior geomechanics engineer with Baker Hughes. Azeemuddin specializes in static and dynamic rock properties, in-situ stress determination, wellbore stability and depletion related geomechanics and has authored or coauthored more than 20 technical publications.

CONTINUING EDUCATION Coiled Tubing Operations & Advancements In this accelerated Coiled Tubing course, the attendees will learn about all aspects involving a coiled tubing operation including the equipment used, string materials used, key parameters affecting its life. It will also include a brief overview on the conventional applications such as clean outs, matrix stimulation and nitrogen pumping amongst others. The second half of the training will focus on todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most widely used application, which is plug milling. The attendees will learn the correlation between well completion, string design, and bottom hole assembly, as well as the fluid types used. These key points will then be put into practice, as the course will allow students free access to job design case studies via a proprietary web based coiled tubing software. SPORTING CLAYS SPE-GCS 20th Annual Sporting Clays Tournament We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy! We have spoken with Westside Sporting Grounds and they are taking precautionary measures during this time (i.e. staff wearing PPE, hand washing stations, tables spaced, sanitized carts) in order to ensure everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s safety. They informed us that their attendance has bounced back with full rosters for their recent events. The 20th annual SPE-GCS Sporting Clays Tournament and Annual Food Frenzy will now be held this fall! Last year, this SPE-GCS tradition generated more than $40,000 in revenue, with profits going directly to the SPE-GCS Scholarship Fund and $5,000 to the Bright Light Foundation. PAST AND UPCOMING ACTIVITIES RECAP Douglas Von Gonten Memorial Golf Tournament TAMU-SPE would like to invite companies and industry professionals to join us for our annual Douglas Von Gonten (DVG) Memorial Golf Tournament. Each year, TAMU-SPE hosts this golf tournament to raise scholarship funds to support petroleum engineering students. PAST AND UPCOMING ACTIVITIES RECAP The Oil and Gas Value Chain – Upstream, Downstream and Commercial UH-SPE collaborated with EC to organize "Field to Futures Lecture Series 1" presented by Shell. The lecture primarily focused on the different sectors of the oil and gas industry and provided insights on the value chain. It was a great opportunity for students to get more exposure to the energy industry. Shell Interns Speak On August 28, UH-SPE hosted "Shell Interns Speak," a panel discussion with Shell interns from 2019 and 2020. This was an exclusive chance to learn about interns' experiences with respect to their diverse work fields, such as supply chain development, supply planning and reservoir assessment. Most importantly, participants gained a competitive advantage when applying for positions at Shell, as tips and secrets to ace the Shell recruitment process were shared. Mentorship Program Through our mentorship program, UH-SPE aims to bring the most valuable resource to our members to help them reach their fullest potential in their professional life. Mentors and mentees will have the opportunity to share career experiences, best practices and past failures and successes. Thinking to Thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution UH-SPE hosted guest speaker Landi Spearman in the program "Thinking to Thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution," which discussed a new aspect of people-centric thinking where students learned to improve problemsolving skills and teamwork contribution. Meet and Greet UH-SPE collaborated with other University of Houston petroleum engineering organizations to host a meet-andgreet where students had the opportunity to learn about various student organizations. ConocoPhillips Virtual Information Session UH-SPE hosted a ConocoPhillips information session, which was a great opportunity for students to network with recruiters before the career fair and learn about internships and full-time opportunities with ConocoPhillips.

General Meeting UH-SPE had its first general meeting to kick off the fall semester. This was a great opportunity to learn more about UH-SPE and the benefits of being a member. Virtual Resume Critique UH-SPE hosted a virtual resume critique with industry professionals. Students had the opportunity to have their resumes reviewed by industry professionals before the career fair. Virtual Mock Interview UH-SPE collaborated with SPE-GCS to host a virtual mock interview with experienced professionals.
