Dear Spectrum for Living Friends -
For over 35 years Spectrum for Living has operated as a cooperative of families to provide quality care to all of our clients. The Spectrum for Living family is an extended one, encompassing our clients, a compassionate direct care staff, a top-notch executive team, parents & family members, and our financial supporters. All contribute in a plethora of ways to make Spectrum for Living a premier service provider for the developmentally disabled.
We are pleased to share this Annual Report of Spectrum for Living’s calendar year 2019. As you will see in the following pages, we have had a wealth of programming and events throughout the year that provided an enriching and meaningful life experience for our many clients.
Personally, I am forever grateful to all the above for creating a loving environment for my brother-in-law who has thrived in our Spectrum family who always has the best interests of the individual as its driving force. And I am now honored to serve as Chairperson of the Spectrum Board of Trustees, who are committed to our mission as well. The past year has been challenging as the state continued its shift to a Medicaid fee-forservice model. Many adjustments have been instituted and more will be forthcoming as we move entirely into this new environment. Financial support from our benefactors, large and small, has never been more important than now. Your contributions in dollars and services have allowed to continue to offer clients the benefits of our long-standing offerings. And while this annual report reflects our operations in 2019, I must express my gratitude and that of the entire Board of Trustees to the direct care workers and staff who have cared for our loved ones during this COVID-19 pandemic. Their dedication and professionalism have been shining stars we are all proud of during this unprecedented time.
As originally envisioned by our Founding Parents - Alexander Gallione, Adele Guttenberg Rena Kamena, Annette Levy and Edna Melosh - Spectrum for Living is a partnership between families and our compassionate, dedicated staff. Collectively, we are engaged in the daily work of transforming peoples’ lives, and it is our aspiration that all of our many clients reach their fullest potential and are exposed to the full richness that life has to offer. However, more than just an aspiration, this is something that we actually deliver, and the people we serve rely upon us to make the right decisions, day after day, and without delay. 2019 marked an important turning point for Spectrum for Living. Having successfully transitioned to New Jersey’s Medicaid fee-for-service reimbursement system and having implemented a number of key operational changes to ensure more efficient running of our operations, our agency is an operational success. We are most thankful for our truly committed and dedicated staff, who work selflessly and tirelessly towards keeping our Mission alive while providing stability and comfort for our many clients.
And thanks to all of you for your continued support and dedication to Spectrum for Living so we can continue to help our clients reach their highest levels of skills, purpose, and independence.
Of course, a key component in our continued success is your unwavering support. Without you, the dream of our Founding Parents would have expired long ago. You keep their dream alive by being an active member of our community. You are part of something good, something true, and something that brings meaning and joy to the lives of people who very much need it – and who very much deserve it. Our Mission The mission of Spectrum for Living is to enable individuals who have developmental and/or physical disabilities to have the opportunity to attain their highest level of skills, purpose and independence with dignity through an ongoing commitment to comprehensive quality services, advocacy and family partnership.
Programs & Services HOUSING Spectrum for Living provides multiple services for adults with developmental disabilities. These include an Intermediate Care Facility in Closter - our first site - which opened in 1983. This residential facility provides twenty-four hour care for our most medically-intensive residents. Spectrum also provides barrier-free housing options. Our Group Homes are located in towns across Bergen, Passaic, and Middlesex Counties and provide group living with private rooms and a shared common area. Our supervised Apartments serve residents who are most able to live independently. Each two-bedroom apartment offers a private room, shared living room, and specifically designed kitchens and bathrooms. HEALTH CARE Spectrum for Living provides comprehensive medical and nursing services for our residents and community clients. Spectrum's medical director and nurse practitioner oversee the provision of quality care which also includes physical, occupational, speech and dietary therapies. ADULT TRAINING CENTERS Maximizing the potential of our residents and community clients is the goal and focus of our Adult Training Centers. Our services are offered at six sites located in Bergen, Passaic and Middlesex counties. Each program provides a variety of stimulating programs which teach and improve skills. Activities and events are available to all participants, including but not limited to: socialization, practical arts, computers, recreation, crafts, music therapy, community integration, sensory integration and reading. The centers provide a positive environment for participants to maintain or develop their skills and interests. RECREATION Spectrum's Central Recreation Program harnesses the team spirit and creativity of the people we serve. The Central Recreation Program provides a variety of opportunities to Spectrum residents and community clients to participate in a broad variety of events and activities. Saturday Drop-In Programs, monthly canteens, trips in the community, bowling and baseball leagues are just a few of the available opportunities. In addition, a comprehensive "In House" recreation program is provided to clients in each of Spectrum's residences and day programs. SUPPORT SERVICES Spectrum offers a full range of support services to persons in the community and to their families. Our Family Respite Program provides a safe, secure, and warm environment for individuals whose families need to take a break from care. Respite services can be provided in the client's home or in a community based setting. Services include Case Management, the Alternate Family Assistance Program, and In-Home Training. SPECTRUM FROM THE HEART Spectrum for Living operates Spectrum from the Heart, a client-operated store in our Westwood Adult Training Center, which provides creative and productive work opportunities for some of our residents and community clients. Arts and crafts produced include party centerpieces, customized tee-shirts, balloons, decorative items, personalized favors, and one-of-a-kind craft products.
Psychological and Behavioral Services Behavioral change is often a very common way that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities communicate a need or express that something is wrong. It is our goal to assess and manage the overall mental health needs of every individual and help foster independence and growth by working with all those that help to care for them to ensure their optimal quality of life. We do this by utilizing a collaborative approach, evaluating, testing and assessing quantified empirical data, as well as clinical observations. Most importantly, we establish a rapport by "getting to know" our clients in order to develop therapeutic resources to incorporate in our individualized Behavior Support Plans used to provide positive interventions.
GOAL: To help our clients and our staff to gain a better understanding of what various behaviors are communicating. Behaviors serve a need or a function. The department helps to support our clients who experience a wide array of behavioral, emotional and mental challenges by equipping them with the necessary tools - through individualized supports and planning - to help them reduce these behaviors. We help our clients find ways to not only decrease maladaptive behaviors but also to increase appropriate functional communication in a positive manner. FOCUS: To provide our staff with the knowledge and information of the psychological and behavioral challenges that our clients encounter and how to address them. Our multidimensional clinical team, comprised of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Psychologist, Social Worker, Behavioral Health Clinician and Behavior Specialists, assists our clients and provides strategies to build positive, meaningful relationships and adapt the socialization skills needed for successful community integration.

Masquerade Ball
We held our first ever Spectrum Masquerade Ball in June of 2019, at the Rockleigh Country Club in Rockleigh, New Jersey. Leading up to the ball, our residential clients had the chance to shop for formal attire in our Flea Market of clothes generously donated by many supporters. Our clients enjoyed an evening filled with dancing, dressing up, pictures, food, & wonderful company!

Financials
Spectrum for Living receives State and Federal funding and County grants that are imperative to keeping our doors open and providing basic care. However, most of the recreational programs and supportive services that distinguish Spectrum for Living from other providers are not covered by these funding sources. We therefore depend on donations to provide the robust level of care that we have become known for. We are steadfast in carefully prioritizing our commitment and ensuring that our program expenses outweigh our administrative costs. Other/Investment Income 6.6%

2019 Family 5K, Walk & Doggie Dash Spectrum for Living held its annual Family 5K, Walk & Doggie Dash at Overpeck Park in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey on September 28th. Approximately 300 runners, walkers, volunteers, clients and staff came together in support of our organization. It was wonderful to see our family members and friends supporting all of our runners and walkers. A huge thank you to all of our sponsors, race participants, staff and volunteers who made the event a success. We're happy to share that we raised over $41,000 from our 2019 Family 5K, Walk & Doggie Dash!
