ABOUT THE BACK COVER: The latest addition to Pembroke Community Middle School is a new mural created by local artist and Pembroke parent, Jean Guerini. The mural has powerful words that reflect the “Kindness First” culture we are striving for. Jean worked with the middle school students the last few weeks of school to create the mural. She sketched the outline, and a series of two or three students at a time painted the wall. Jean’s daughter Bella is moving on to Pembroke High School next year, and wanted to do something for the school in recognition. Long Pond Physical Therapy Celebrates 15 Years This year, Long Pond Physical Therapy in Plymouth and Pembroke is celebrating 15 years of helping the residents on the South Shore and surrounding communities reduce pain and improve mobility through physical therapy.

Fifteen years ago, LPPT employees Andy Burke and Brian Faghan were approached about purchasing the business. They took the leap of faith, became the new owners, and have been offering quality care and rehabilitation services ever since.

Both Faghan and Burke attribute the continued growth of their practice to their excellent team and quality product.

Faghan commented, “We have great teams assembled at both locations. Our clients experience recovery from injuries and surgeries and become great referral sources as they share their success stories. The healing process can be grueling at times, so we attempt to inject some fun into the visits, while still focusing on expedient recovery. Pembroke Arts Festival When: Friday, August 10, Gala Opening Saturday, Aug 11, 10:00 am–9:00 pm | Sunday, Aug 12, 10:00 am–4:00 pm Where: Pembroke Town Green (128 Center Street), in front of the Recreation Center, in the yellow-and-white striped tent.

It’s time once again for the much anticipated Pembroke Arts Festival, now in its 51st season. Three days of art, music, dancing, and food combine to create a fantastic and memorable community event. Some of the finest artists from around the South Shore, as well as some budding young artists, will be showcasing enchanting and unique visual arts and crafts.

The Juried Art Show will be chosen by a panel of three distinguished judges with varied backgrounds and cutting-edge works in their portfolios. The Young Artists Exhibit, which will include a new category for Special Education entrants, will inspire our area youth to put forth their best efforts in order to see their works displayed in the iconic yellow-and-white striped tent for all to enjoy. Performing artists are an integral part of the festival and this year there will be some delightful surprises to entertain you! As always there will be talented artisans offering original crafts for sale, delicious food throughout the weekend, artists in action demonstrating their techniques, an expanded antique car show, and young dancers performing on the outdoor stage.

Marshfield Fair When: August 17–26, Noon-10:00pm each day Where: Marshfield Fairgrounds, 140 Main St., Marshfield This year marks the 151st annual Marshfield Fair. The fair draws hundreds of competitors in 4-H, arts and crafts, agricultural, and horticultural events. The Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society, sponsors of the Marshfield Fair, is dedicated to making this the premier event of Southeastern Massachusetts.

Special feature shows include ox pulling, demolition derby, team penning, truck pulling, horse pulling, lawnmower racing, antique truck and tractor show, and motocross. For live entertainment, enjoy the 22nd Annual Green Harbor Roots festival, which features the “Bayou Americana” sounds of the Honey Island Swamp Band; classic oldies from Music by Reminisce; and the 23rd Annual North River Blues Festival featuring Ronnie Earl and Southern Avenue.

In the interest of continuing education, there will be daily horticulture workshops featuring topics such as growing specific plants, glass-blowing, beekeeping, blacksmith shop, carving, organic gardening, landscaping, and so much more. There will also be arts and crafts and photography exhibits, and of course the rides and shows at the Family Midway!

Fair admission is $10 for adults; children age 6 and under are free. Parking is $5.

Plymouth Waterfront Festival and Arts & Music on North When: Saturday, August 25, 10:00am–6:00pm Where: Plymouth Waterfront, and North Street This year, there will be more than 250 artisan and crafter booths, 30+ food vendors, two stages of live entertainment, Motor Head’s Cruise-In Car Show, Ducky Dash, Kids Activities, and much more! The festival is presented by the Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce, and is free to the public.

The Cruise-In Car Show will be held at the Jenney Grist Mill, from 11:00am–2:00pm. There is a $10 cost to cruise-in. Prizes will be awarded in these categories: n

In collaboration with the Plymouth Waterfront Festival, the Plymouth Bay Cultural District will present its second annual Art & Music on North, from 11:00am to 4:00pm. North Street becomes an open air artist block where visitors can enjoy live music from songwriters, guitarists, and an acappella ensemble while perusing the gifted handiwork of artists of all mediums making original creations “plein air” style along the historic cobblestone street, some available for purchase. North Street is a natural conduit between the Waterfront Festival and Plymouth’s vibrant town center, where visitors can also explore local merchants and restaurants during their stay.

Thirsty Pilgrim Beer Festival When: September 8 & 9, 1:00–7:00pm Where: Hedge House, 126 Water Street, Plymouth There will be live music both days starting at 2:00pm. Come see The King Ludwig’s Band. There will be great food as well, featuring the world famous Thirsty Pilgrim Brats. There will also be face painting, contests, and games! Bud Light End Zone Tent will feature Bud Light and Twisted Teas, and two hi-def televisions for college football on Saturday and the Patriots on Sunday.

All the money raised at last year’s event was donated to the local food pantries. It is the motto of The Lions Club “to serve,” and with your contributions they hope to continue to help the less fortunate among us. So have a good beer and help The Lions Club help the hungry. The location this year will be the Hedge House lawn at the Plymouth waterfront. Cost: admission is $5 for adults; $3 for children under 10. Admission for adults over 21 includes three beer samples. Pembroke Family Fun Day When: Saturday, October 13, 4:00–7:00pm Where: 1st Lt. Brian M. McPhillips Field, 456 Mattakeesett Street, Pembroke Please join in once again for all the fun, food, games, and contests as the season winds down, and we celebrate with a special day devoted to family and community. Proceeds from the event go to benefiting various Pembroke charities. There’s fun for the whole family! Events planned include a dunk tank, bounce house, obstacle slide, Touch-A-Truck, face painting, and balloon animals. Special events for the day include the RE/MAX Hot Air Balloon, and an informative and fun K-9 demonstration, and an amazing laser light show that starts at dusk. in the news Plymouth’s 2nd Annual Amazing Race Brings Healthy Programs for Youth

Funds raised in 2017 by the Amazing Race supported Healthy Plymouth’s cooking and gardening programs for kids.

On Saturday, September 22, Healthy Plymouth will hold its second annual Amazing Race fundraiser. Teams of four will race around historic North Plymouth, following clues and competing in fantastic challenges in an effort to claim the winning title and cash prize!

The Amazing Race will take place from 1:00–4:00pm, followed by a festive after-party from 4:00–6:00pm at Cordage Park, where dinner will be served and many prizes awarded.

Race challenges will range from physical and mental, to just plain fun. Ages 10 and up are welcome to race, so grab your family members, friends, or co-workers and get ready for race day! Registration opens July 1. The registration fee is $25 per person. For more information or to register for the race, go to HealthyPlymouth.org. Each team is required to have one adult participant age 18 or above.

Healthy Plymouth is a collaboration between Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth, Plymouth Public Schools, Plymouth Youth Development Collaborative, Terra Cura Inc., and many other committed community partners. This volunteer organization strives to create free, engaging programming for youth as a drug prevention strategy.

Proceeds raised from this year’s Amazing Race will fund school garden programs and expand the Peer Helper program to an after-school model for grades 6–8.

CHILDREN Making Strides Helping Each Child Reach Their Full Potential Children Making Strides is an organization that was founded in 1997 by a mother, not long after her son was diagnosed with autism at age two. In her efforts to help her child, she discovered that there was a tremendous need for services and information for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and there was not much available in the southeastern Massachusetts area.

At the same time, new information and research was just coming to light about early, intensive services and the dramatic effect that they could have on a child’s development. Those two factors lead to the beginnings of Children Making Strides.

Since those early days, the staff has been fortunate to work with thousands of children, helping each one of them reach their full potential. Through a program based on the principle of ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis), a developmentally appropriate curriculum, and a truly dedicated staff, each child has been able to make dramatic gains that once were never thought possible.

At Children Making Strides, they believe that there is hope for all of our children, and that each child deserves the opportunity to reach his or her full potential, and that potential should have no limits. They also believe that parents need support, information, and encouragement in their efforts to help their child.

The foundation of the educational program at CMS is one that is based upon the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). ABA is a method whereby skills are task analyzed (broken down into sequential steps) to make the tasks easier and more attainable for the child. Skills and behaviors are initially taught in one-to-one teaching sessions.

Children can thus acquire a large amount of information much quicker than in normal, everyday interactions. New skills are then generalized to a variety of situations and environments. These skills are not considered mastered until the child can demonstrate them under natural conditions with a wide variety of people found in those environments.

Children Making Strides Plymouth Learning Center is conveniently located in the Plymouth Industrial Park, and the Fall River Center is located in the Fall River Industrial Park.

Both facilities offer 1:1 ABA therapy and group programs.

The centers also offer simulated preschool programs, social skills groups, parent workshops, learning activities, homework help, video modeling, games and assessments, and evaluations. Most, if not all, of these services would be covered by insurance plans.Tours of the center can be scheduled Monday through Friday.

After reading the tragic story about a 12-year-old girl committing suicide due to alleged cyber bullying, Maria Wood, founder of the Fashion Focus Program, felt compelled to do something proactive. She immediately expressed her desire to create a program to help children and families, and posted it on social media to get a gauge as to what others thought about the idea.

The response was overwhelming with many parents and community leaders generously volunteering to help.

Soon after, the Powerhouse Program was created as a confidence-building program for at-risk boys and girls who may be in distress from any type of bullying. Three sessions will be held, at no charge, on Monday evenings from

7:00–8:30pm on September 17, 24, and October 1 at the Norwell Athletic Club.

Through the program, Wood hopes to provide a safe and welcoming place of inclusion: “No child should feel isolated or lonely.” The Powerhouse Program’s mission is to build inner strength and confidence in children and teens with the hope that no child feels powerless in any situation. According to Wood, the focus of the free three-week program is “to give kids the tools to build themselves up and be their own source of empowerment . . . to be their own powerhouse—a person of great energy, strength, and power.”

SKYDIVE CHALLENGE RAISES $33,500 (and counting!)

Sixteen thrill-seeking supporters participated in a tandem skydiving event with Skydive South Boston at Cranland Airport in Hanson on July 14. The 2018 roster of skydivers included Plymouth residents Kathryn Gallerani, a reporter for Wicked Local; Selectman Tony Provenzano; Meghan Keller, an Iraq War Army veteran; Kevin Hennessey, a Marine Corps veteran; Ann Luongo; Amanda Roy; Bobby Strickland; and Mary Currier. Those participating from nearby towns included Carver

residents Todd Johnson, Saran Craig, Stephanie Clougherty, and Harley-Anne Hamilton; Brian Faghan from Kingston; Whitman resident Meghan Cleaves; and Bill Dodge, a retired Navy veteran who resides in Abington and is the Veteran Service Officer for the town of Marshfield. Peter Brown from Pembroke and Tiny & Sons and Meaghan Doherty of Plymouth have also teamed up together to participate.

The skydivers, who were required to raise $1,000 minimum, were in a

friendly competition to raise the most money before the jump, and together, they raised $33,200.

“This incredible crew of skydivers represents a range of backgrounds and reasons for participating, but they all have a deep appreciation for veterans and want to give back. We’re so grateful for their support,” said Amy Belmore, Managing Director of Heidrea for Heroes.

Saving for Education?

Consider a 529 Plan

Do you know about 529 savings plans? If not, you are not alone. Although these plans have been around since 1996, many people are still unaware of them. And that’s unfortunate, because a 529 plan can be a valuable tool for anyone who wants to help a child, grandchild, friend, or other family member save for education expenses.

Here are some of the key benefits of a 529 plan: n

Potential tax advantages—A 529 plan’s earnings are not subject to federal income taxes, as long as withdrawals are used for qualified elementary, secondary, and higher education expenses of the designated beneficiary, such as your child or grandchild. (You will be subject to ordinary income taxes, plus a 10 percent federal penalty, on the earnings portion of withdrawals not used for qualified education expenses.)

High contribution limits—Contribution limits are generally quite high for most states’ 529 plans. However, you could possibly incur gift tax consequences if your contributions, plus any other gifts, to a particular beneficiary exceed $15,000 during a single year.

While a 529 plan clearly offers some benefits, it also raises some issues about which you should be aware. For example, when colleges compute financial aid packages, they may count assets in a 529 plan as parental assets, assuming the parents are the plan owners. To clarify the impact of 529 plans on potential financial aid awards, you might want to consult with a college’s financial aid officer.

Ability to switch beneficiaries—As the old song goes, “The future is not ours to see.” You might name a particular child or grandchild as a beneficiary of a 529 savings plan, only to see him or her decide not to go to college after all. But as the owner of the plan, you generally may be able to switch beneficiaries whenever you like, right up to the point when they start taking withdrawals. (To make this switch non-taxable and penalty-free, you must designate a new beneficiary who is a member of the same family as the original beneficiary.)

Education is a great investment in a child’s future. And to make that education more affordable, you might want to make your own investment in a 529 plan.

Freedom to invest in any state’s plan—You can invest in the 529 plan offered by any state, regardless of

One final note: In previous years, 529 plans were limited to eligible colleges, universities and trade schools, but starting in 2018, you can also use up to $10,000 per year, per beneficiary, from a 529 plan to pay for tuition expenses at public, private or religious elementary and secondary schools.

(Not all states recognize elementary and secondary school expenses as qualifying for 529 plan benefits, so consult your local tax advisor before investing.)

Have a “Bliss Full ” Transition from Summer to Fall Contributed by Deb O’Brien Self Image Consultant | deborahobrienbliss.com Transitioning between summer and fall clothing can be tricky, especially here in New England. The early mornings can be chilly and then by noon the heat can be sweltering.

Once the sun goes down, the temperature plummets. Here are a few ways you can look and feel your best this autumn.

1. KNOW YOUR COLORS & YOUR ENERGY Just because it’s fall, doesn’t mean you have to wear fall colors. Some people don’t look good in those hues. Who made up that rule anyway? Find out what your dominant energy is and then you will know what colors to wear this fall.

If your energy is: n

NITROGEN—Your face is circular or heart shaped. You have a button nose and eyes that sparkle. Your whole face lights up when you smile. Because your energy is bright and light, you look great in bright summer colors. When you transition to the fall, you can start wearing WINTER WHITE, BROWN, ORANGE, YELLOW, and PURPLE.

n

OXYGEN—Your face is oval, you have soft dropping checks, dropping eyelids, and big almond-shaped eyes.

Your energy has a downward movement. Muted earth tones like PLUM, BROWN, FORREST GREEN, OXBLOOD are the colors for your transition.

n

HYDROGEN—Your face is triangular, square, or angular.

You have a chiseled jaw and cheekbones. Your nose is angular too. You look dynamic in the rich colors of the falling leaves, like BROWN, RUST, BURNT ORANGE, RED, GOLD, BRONZE, PURPLE, OLIVE GREEN, and of course PUMPKIN.

CARBON—Your face shape is elongated oval or rectangular with parallel lines on the sides. You have high cheekbones, straight lines on the sides of your nose, straight lines on the bottom of your eyelids and when you smile, your top lip forms a straight line. To create a fall look for you, BOLD RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, and PURPLE will do. No brown for your still energy. Stark white and black are your signature colors. Feel free to wear white after Labor Day.

2. LAYERING Layer up and you will not only look fashionable, but you will feel comfortable. Ladies, don’t put your summer dresses away just yet. Try pairing them up with opaque tights and boots. Throw on a chunky knit sweater and you have an

instant fresh fall look. Top it off with a little beret—très chic!

Get out your favorite hoodie and wear it with a long summer skirt. Pair your denim skirt with a blazer. Get some new turtlenecks in fall hues. Look for a shaggy faux fur vest to keep you warm when the temperature goes down.

Gentlemen, layering adds self expression. A denim jacket is a classic piece to have on a cool summer night as you transition into the colder fall weather. An oxford shirt is an essential seasonless piece. Tweed jackets are going to be everywhere this fall. It is the perfect way to dress up a casual look. Invest in a vest for a chilly autumn night. Flannel shirts in buffalo check look great over a turtleneck. Plaid is going to be big. Of course, leather jackets will always be in style.

Throw one on over a summer tee and you are ready to go.

3. ACCESSORIZE Accessorizing is the best way to give an outfit your unique look. Ladies, don’t forget a scarf can give you that pop of fall color, as well as keep you warm. Fall is the time to put your summer jewelry away. Big earrings are going to be really big this fall. Take a good look in your closet for belts and bags. I bet you have some you completely forgot about. Check out your boots and booties. Are they in good shape? You can take them to the cobbler and he can have them looking as good as new. Swap out your summer pink polish for a neutral or a metallic. If you want color, go with a fall hue.

Gentlemen, pay attention to the little details like matching your belt with your shoes. No black belts with brown shoes.

Okay? Speaking of shoes, nothing says autumn more than a pair of suede ankle-high boots. If you don’t have any, go get some for yourself. You are worth it! Tortoise shell sunglasses are classic and make a great transition accessory. Is your wallet looking a little shabby? Maybe time for a new one.

4. ECONOMIZE Don’t blow your money on new clothes for a short season.

Just get the essentials. I know it is tempting when you start seeing all the new fall fashion everywhere, but it isn’t worth it. Just by adding color, texture, a few accessories, and some layering to your summer clothes, you can get through the transition and save money to spend on the more functional winter pieces of your wardrobe.

When you discover your energy type, you find your own style and nothing is more stylish than a man or woman who owns their own style.

One look at the plate of Crispy Fried Eggs, a signature dish, and your eyes will fall in love. Two perfectly cooked eggs bursting open like rays of yellow sun will leave you wanting more. It doesn’t take long to figure what leaves the locals coming back, once for breakfast, and then again for lunch.

The Local Yolk Company, owned by Gabby Dominguez, is not your average spot. In fact Gabby could run a restaurant without much of anything on the menu, and could probably still get locals coming through the door. Her infectious giggle and charm is as sunny as the eggs that come out of the straight-from-scratch kitchen.

Growing up in Plymouth, now residing in Plympton, Gabby knows a thing or two about her community. She is a Plymouth North High School graduate with a background in business management from Curry College. Her growth in the community from local girl to businesswoman is evident now, running her own business. From working the grill, register, human resources, scheduling, and networking her business, she wears all the hats.

You will often find her mother, Susan, working at the Local Yolk, and after you meet her, it becomes obvious where Gabby gets her strong work ethic from. Susan helps out as often as she can, and she’s the woman who taught Gabby how to make a mean homemade apple pie. The apple

pie is one of the many homemade baked goods available, alongside the homemade breakfast and lunch menu.

If you’ve ever tried the sausage biscuits and gravy, then you’ve tried Gabby’s favorite item on the menu. All made from scratch, including the biscuits, and of course, the homemade sausage. Other famous items on the menu include the Ricotta Pancakes and Mayflower Panini.

As the business grows, so does Gabby’s “from scratch” items.

Not only are all the ingredients locally sourced, but Gabby also offers eggs straight from her farm in Plympton. She can even tell you the names of the chickens that laid them; she loves eggs that much! She’s also begun beekeeping and should have honey this fall. In the summer months, she grows tomatoes, basil, blackberries, and more.

If you’re ever wondering where the name comes from, here is your answer: Between the local ingredients, the local girl, and local people, it’s the Local Yolk Company!

Crayon College is a local large-group childcare center with three convenient locations in Kingston, Bourne, and Plymouth. Owners Lucinda Morgan and Mathew Muratore started the business in 2004 with their first location on Main Street in Kingston. In 2011, the company expanded to Plymouth, and most recently a third location in the summer of 2016 in Bourne. All three locations offer infant, toddler and preschool programs running year-round, and offer a fun educational option for families, whether they are looking for their first school experience or quality childcare.

Crayon College believes that children learn and develop best when in a secure, loving environment. Because they are concerned with the whole child, they aim to balance development in all areas: social, emotional, physical, and intellectual. The teachers here are dedicated to helping children grow

at their natural pace by building their self-confidence, strengths, and skills.

Simply stated the philosophy of Crayon College is to provide high quality, safe, secure care and learning experiences for children in a positive atmosphere.

Crayon College implements a monthly curriculum centered around a common theme. Children participate in balanced daily activities that incorporate ageappropriate tasks, promote positive self-help skills, and cooperative social relationships. Teachers work diligently to make sure that the children who move on from Crayon College are prepared academically for their next experience.

Being a part of the community is a common thread between all three locations.

The centers find ways to involve the children and families into the community. Projects in the past have included a hat and gloves drive, Jimmy Fund Jeans days, a PJ drive (in conjunction with the Boston Bruins), Toys for Tots, and a non-perishable food drive).

Summers are filled with enrichment programs that vary from year to year, depending on the themes chosen.

Programs in the past have included plants and animals with Soule Homestead, The Bubble Man, A Mad Science Show, Big Ryan’s Tall Tales, and Kona Shaved Ice Truck. This year, the Kingston and Bourne centers will be introducing a soccer clinic too! Sprinklers, picnics, and freeze pops are always part of summers at Crayon College!

Children in all locations also participate in snow play. It isn’t uncommon for you to walk into “drop-off time” and find a flurry of boots, snow pants, gloves, and hats being eagerly put on to go out and explore in the snow. Every opportunity is a learning opportunity! No matter how big or small it appears, there is a lesson to be learned somewhere!

hether you are wanting to buy a home or simply refinance, here are some tips to have a smooth mortgage process.

1. Always communicate with your loan officer or processor on the timing of getting the requested documents. You always want to be responsive to hit important dates, such as the commitment or closing dates. Late documents can cause panic and anxiety. Be on time!

2. Never apply for other credit cards, loans, loan people money, or change your credit history without consulting your loan officer or processor. You don’t want to change debt ratios during the process.

4. Avoid moving funds around. It’s best to move money just once during your purchase process.

Moving money around can cause an overwhelming amount of extra work and paperwork. Before moving funds, speak with your loan officer or processor.

It is important that expectations are set on both sides of the transaction between the borrower and the lender.

The easiest way to make this happen is to work with a lender that is open after hours and works seven days a week.

It’s an analogy that provides similarity in cycles, both following predictable patterns and projected outcomes. We’re hoping that this information will help you navigate the waves of Real Estate and assist you in your journey.

Historically proven, the Real Estate market tends to trend every 8–10 years; whereby at the end of the cycle pricing usually falls off, thus perceptually changing “value” previously acknowledged—at least on paper. Correction for all investments is a necessity allowing for growth. The truth is that although Real Estate remains one of the strongest and most predictable assets included in our financial portfolios, much like the stock market, it is subject to the same cyclical changes. Your investment in home ownership is based on equity built, relying on professionals to assist in maximizing gain with a realistic approach. Let’s identify some of the common errors made by homeowners in hopes of eliminating potential costly pitfalls when contemplating the sale of your home.

Let’s touch on why inventory remains at an all-time low.

Perhaps the first reason is the proverbial chicken/egg question. Sellers want a level of comfort; they want to be able to identify their next residence prior to putting their current home on the market. This may sound familiar to you. If there’s little to choose from, fear of selling before finding your new home restricts motivation to move forward.

In addition, the younger generation who craves the dream of home ownership exceeds by population the population of downsizers. And, by the way, the downsizers looking for maintenance-free lifestyle are significantly restricted based on choice and affordability. The market, as it always does, will self-correct, but realistic pricing will undoubtedly promote a faster turnaround and a more sustainable resolve.

Homeowners, especially in today’s market, tend to believe that their home is “worth” more than its actual value.

From the end of 2017 and through the first half of 2018, inventory remained at an all-time low, driving prices up and opportunity to purchase down. A “Seller’s Market” escalated by the media, encouraged sellers to price their homes above acceptable appraised value, with resulting disappointment.

Remember that a home is only worth what a buyer is willing to pay and if mortgaged by the buyer, needs to be accepted by the bank as the first buyer of the property. Buyers are knowledgeable; they’ve done their homework, especially if they’re working with a knowledgeable Realtor®. They will not overpay and the inevitable outcome is fewer successful transactions, lower financial gain to the seller based on necessary reductions in price, and dashed dreams on both sides. Hire a Realtor® and be realistic in your pricing.

The third point, and a major concern in today’s market, is the belief of many sellers that due to the supply-and-demand principal, plus the lack of inventory, that selling a home on their own should be easy. If you have had the patience to read thus far, you will hopefully realize the most important pitfall of today’s Real Estate marketplace. Real Estate sales are not easy, let’s start with that.

TIPS FROM THE PRO FALL in Love with Your Home Again

As the sun sets earlier and the cooler nights slowly creep in, we all know what lies ahead—football, of course! But before you settle in for another fantastic season, there’s a few things you can do now to ensure your home is comfortable and safe.

1. Schedule a Chimney Inspection and Cleaning Just like going for regular dental visits, think of a chimney inspection as good preventative maintenance. A professional is trained to find areas of damage or deterioration before they cause major safety issues. Many chimney problems start out small and progressively get worse over time, so having your chimney inspected once a year is advised. The inspector will also recommend if your chimney needs a cleaning.

There are lots of DIY home maintenance projects you can tackle on your own, but a good chimney cleaning probably isn’t one of them. Be sure to hire a CSIA certified chimney sweep to tackle this job, which involves more than just sweeping soot. Need more reasons to make an appointment for an inspection and sweep? n

Substantial creosote buildup can catch fire and spread to the attic and other areas of your home.

n

If used infrequently, birds and other critters may nest and cause a blockage in your chimney.

n

Consider a rain cap to keep out water and animals, two of the primary reasons for chimney failure.

2. Fireplace Facelift Now that you have the inner components of your fireplace in tiptop shape, can we talk about that 1980’s brass fireplace enclosure? Or the outdated red brick face topped off with a lack luster mantel?

From white-washed brick, to decorative trim and beautiful metallic tile reflecting the fire’s glow, there are so many creative ways to make a statement with your mantel surround. You’re only limited by your imagination. Need ideas? We can help!

3. To Repair or Replace, That Is The Question Weather-stripping, replacing hardware for a tight-seal closure or re-glazing allow you to extend the life of your windows and doors. But what if that just doesn’t cut it?

Ill-fitting door? It should be rehung first to ensure it’s centered correctly in the frame. If you’re feeling a draft and new weather stripping just isn’t cutting it, bigger gaps may require a new doorjamb kit and matching sweep for the bottom.

If your windows only have one of the following problems, a repair may be in order. But if you’re looking at two or more of these issues, it may be time to for replacements. n

Drafty seals

Cracked or broken glass

Broken muntins or mullions (pieces of wood that separate panes of glass)

Arts & Entertainment 2nd Annual Arts & Music on North

T

his summer, the Plymouth Bay Cultural District will once again host “Arts & Music on North,” an outdoor celebration along historic North Street in Plymouth, which features artist demonstrations and exhibits, and performances by local musicians.

The event will take place August 25, from 11:00am–4:00pm in tandem with the Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce Waterfront Festival, which is held along the historic Plymouth Waterfront. So if you are planning on coming down to the Plymouth Waterfront Festival this year, be sure to take a stroll up North Street as well.

August 2017 was the debut of this event, which featured local acoustic musicians and a capella groups who performed on the front lawn of the Plymouth Center for the Arts, by Guilty Bakery, and Upscale Resale. Along with musicians were visual artists, including youth from Top of the World Studio, who painted en plein air, sketched, and conducted pottery demonstrations. This year, there will be additional participants and more activities for kids and families.

North Street is a natural conduit between the Waterfront and Downtown, and as the home of the Plymouth Center for the Arts, Mayflower Society House, and the 1749 Spooner House, it is already brimming with art, history, and culture.

The Plymouth Bay Cultural District was officially designated by the Massachusetts Cultural Council in 2014 and is first and foremost, a vehicle for local businesses and organizations offering cultural activities and programs, to connect and partner with one another, encouraging visitors to take advantage of the many local cultural experiences available. The District links popular cultural destinations on the waterfront with Main Street, and all that lies between. District facilitated programs will help visitors learn about and explore Plymouth’s cultural assets.

If you plan on enjoying the Plymouth Waterfront Festival this summer, don’t forget to take a stroll up ajoining North Street to see local artists and hear acoustic musicians.

In addition, she is the proud mother of two children who excel at both sports and academics. It seems that the work ethic embraced by her, has been adopted by her kids as well. Sue coaches the Plymouth Girls Basketball team, assisting her 13-yearold daughter and teammates to secure the championship this year after placing second in the previous two. Her 11-yearold son is a five-sport athlete and excels at all five. His accolades are too numerous to count, but recently his football team played in the National Championship Tournament in Florida and placed sixth in the country. He also plays golf for the PGA golf league out of Pinehills, and soccer for his school with, of course, Sue having been his coach since first grade. She coaches off the field as well, teaching her children the joy of cooking, also one of her passions. You may find her and the family at the Plymouth Farmer’s Market, picking out fresh goods for their next culinary adventure.

It’s hard to believe that one person can take on so much and still achieve with such proficiency. Taking it all in stride, she allows herself time to play golf, walk on the beach, and go for a good run.

Next, put a few drops of red food coloring into jar fil led with water.

Put the laminated head into the ja r and replace cover. Use this in a semi hidden pl ace, like behind some wine bott les. It will give a fright!

Decor Idea: Creepy Candles To make a creepy candle collection, take a variety of white candles in all sizes and shapes. Find red tapered candles and drizzle the wax from the red candle onto the sides of the white candles. This will look like blood dripping down the candles.

Food Idea: Frozen Hand Ice Cubes Fill a rubber glove with water. Use a rubber band seal the end of the glove, so as to keep the water inside. Freeze until solid. Peel off the rubber glove and place the frozen hand inside a punch bowl for an eerie ice cube display.
