Message from Chairperson and President/CEO Dear Valued Friends and Families, Since Spectrum for Living was first established by its five founding parents, it has stood at the front line of change and advocacy. After 29 years, Spectrum for Living has earned the right to call itself one of New Jersey’s premier human services agencies.

A Focus on the Future While Strengthening Services and Programs 2011 was a year of action as Spectrum advanced its vision to ensure the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities are met well into the future. The generous donations of two homes by founding parents will provide a means for Spectrum to create new residential living opportunities with supports for those with the greatest medical needs. A six-person medical group home in Wall Township is under development through the generosity of the Melosh Family Foundation, and a second six-person medical group home is in the planning stages in Tenafly/Bergenfield—a gift of the William Guttenberg Estate.

These new medical group homes will enable Spectrum to provide the necessary supports to its clients even as their medical needs change and become more complex over time. We are grateful to these generous donors for their leadership and vision for the future.

Additionally, Spectrum’s Aging Committee is moving forward strategies to create specialized housing for individuals with developmental disabilities as they age and are confronted with Alzheimer’s and dementia. On the day program front, Spectrum is developing a state-of-the-art adult training center in Ringwood that will better serve the needs of individuals in the northern region.

We are only able to move these exciting initiatives forward with the support of the board of trustees, families, donors and Spectrum’s dedicated staff. We are proud of our many accomplishments, but refuse to slow down. There are so many more people in need of services and much more that Spectrum can do to help.

Why Support Spectrum for Living?

Each day we strive to carry out our mission of high-quality services and care for some of New Jersey’s most vulnerable citizens—adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Last year, through the generosity of our Spectrum for Living Family of Supporters and their Annual Appeal contributions, we were able to raise more than $75,000. These funds were used to address critical areas such as clinical services, companionship and advocacy, alternative therapy, facility improvements, respite and community services and recreation and leisure.

Spectrum for Living continues to fulfill its mission of serving our residents throughout the continuum of their life spans.

Spectrum for Living is one of New Jersey’s most respected and recognized 501(c)(3) organizations assisting adults with developmental disabilities in Bergen, Passaic, Middlesex and Monmouth counties.

Again this year we are giving our Family of Supporters the option to choose how their gift will be used to enhance our organization’s services. Our residents and program participants are the direct beneficiaries of the contributions received.

Financial Report Spectrum for Living Development Inc. and Affiliates Every year we receive state, federal and county grants that are imperative to keeping our doors open and providing basic care. Most of the recreational programs and advocacy/supportive services that distinguish Spectrum are supplemental to funded operating costs, so we depend on donations to provide the level of care our founding parents envisioned and sought to preserve. We are steadfast in carefully prioritizing our commitments and ensuring that our program expenses far outweigh our administrative expenses.

“My No. 1 Goal Was to Keep Him Safe” Why a Sister Chose Spectrum to Care for Her Brother “Without Spectrum, I don’t know what we would have done after my mom passed away,” says Peggy Reager, the sister of Spectrum for Living resident George Reager. “George had lived with my mother his entire life, our father was already deceased and none of George’s siblings were in a position to leave their jobs to provide the 24/7 care that George needed. We were lucky enough to find Spectrum and for George to move into one of Spectrum’s Edison, NJ Group Homes.”

George transitioned into the group home and spent five years in that location. But about 2½ years ago, George suffered a stroke and became a fall risk.

“My No. 1 goal was to keep him safe,” Peggy says. “George needed a higher level of care which is provided through the programs and staff at the Closter Intermediate Care Facility (ICF). The ICF staff is absolutely wonderful with him. They allow him to still have his freedom, but everyone keeps a close eye on him. I’m so happy that he’s there.”

Peggy says she appreciates how Spectrum continues to serve George’s needs as he ages. She also values how the donations that people and businesses make to Spectrum improve the daily lives of those served by Spectrum for Living.

“There are numerous programs that Spectrum offers which are not supported through government funding,” Peggy

A New Home and Thriving Joan Egan, Program Director of Closter ICF speaks about George’s progress, “Moving can be a change that is bewildering, particularly to an individual with medical needs. George has quickly settled in and is now a part of our family. We are able to emotionally support him, even if his physical needs become greater, providing him help, comfort and a home.”

George has many siblings and enjoys spending time with them.

“Spectrum Opened Up the Gift of Friendship and Learning for Me” Helping Give Harry Hope—and Happiness Harry was 49 when his mother passed away.

Throughout his life, his mother had always taken care of him and helped him with his many needs.

Harry was lost without her.

Harry’s brother welcomed Harry into his own home even though he was suffering from a serious back injury and in desperate need of surgery himself. Harry’s brother, Stephan, struggled to care for Harry’s needs while trying to address his own medical concerns.

Stephan reached out to the Division of Developmental Disabilities and other social service agencies for help but was told Harry could not be served because Harry and his brother had no documentation of Harry’s disability.

Yet after Harry and his brother became involved with Spectrum for Living’s Case Management Program, it was clear there was hope.

Harry enjoys a more active life through the Spectrum services he receives.

The Spectrum case manager met with Harry and Stephan to discuss their service needs and develop goals with them.

His Spectrum case manager assisted Harry in accessing a psychological evaluation, which was paid for through Spectrum’s Family Assistance Fund. The evaluation identified that Harry did in fact have a developmental disability. His Spectrum case manager was then able to successfully refer and link him to a range of services in the community.

Harry received an eye exam and his first pair of glasses through LensCrafters’ Gift of Sight Program. He was made eligible for Medicaid and then was able to receive medical

care. He became eligible for the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities, which arranged for Harry to stay in a group home while Stephan finally had his long overdue back surgery.

Harry now participates in recreation and companion programs. He participates in Spectrum for Living’s Out of Home Respite Weekends, in which Harry enjoys weekends at an area hotel and engages in fun and interesting activities while his brother receives a break from his caregiving responsibilities. Harry attends a Spectrum Adult Training Center five days a week.

Harry says Spectrum opened up the gift of friendship and learning to him. He now spends his weekdays in a place where he can learn sign language, go on fishing trips and participate in activities such as “Spectrum Idol.”

Now Harry enjoys a richer, more active life through the services he receives.

“I’m looking forward to reading class,” Harry says. “I’m really happy with the program, and I enjoy the people here.”

Our workforce of 700+ individuals take great care and pride in their work. Staff ranges from direct-care professionals to the executive management staff. Each member of the team makes a difference in the lives of those we serve whether it’s preparing a meal, providing nursing support, working with family members or organizing the volunteers who serve throughout the agency, everyone strives for excellence.

We are proud that nearly a quarter of our workforce has been part of the Spectrum for Living family for more than 10 years. Annually, Spectrum for Living celebrates these dedicated employees who have reached milestones of 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of service.

At the 2011 Service Award Luncheon, we were full of pride as we applauded the accomplishments of three people who have been part of the Spectrum lifeline for 25 years: Susan Kerrigan, Susan Mancuso and Eileen Harrison. These women have worked tirelessly over the years to enable people with developmental disabilities to live meaningful, productive lives.

Striving to improve and do better is what sets Spectrum’s employees apart, and is the reason they are our very heart and soul.
