COVID-19 is still raging in many parts of the world, in some states, and, I’m sad to say, it’s still with us in Monroe County. So even though life feels almost back to normal in Bloomington with most people maskless and restaurants and shops fully open, the threat persists and our economy could quickly be shut down again.

As of this writing, 45% of Monroe County adults are still not fully vaccinated. That, despite the fact that nationwide, 99% of those hospitalized and dying of COVID-19 are unvaccinated.

Which makes me want to scream, ‘WTF!’ I hate to be unkind, but how can 45% of our county residents be so callous?! Do they have a death wish? Do they not care about infecting others? Are they taking their cues from crackpot politicians and fear-mongering right-wing media? Do they think they’re making a political statement? Are their religious beliefs holding them back? Are they counting on the rest of us getting vaccinated and herd immunity saving them? Or are they just stupid?

Unvaccinated adults pose a threat to themselves, to children, to other unvaccinated adults, and to some extent, even to the fully vaccinated. With the Delta variant sweeping the country, Pfizer is publicly questioning the long-term efficacy of its vaccine and company scientists are now working to develop a booster shot.

Today, it’s so easy to get vaccinated in Monroe County. No residency is required, it’s free, and the Pfizer and Moderna shots are painless. No appointment is needed—walk in and 20 minutes later, walk out. In three or four weeks return for the second shot.

It’s true that some people experience discomfort or even a low fever within a few days of being vaccinated. But the sideeffect is short lived and negligible compared to contracting COVID-19, an agonizing, debilitating disease that can kill you or cause long-term illness.

So, if you are among the 45%, please, do the right thing for yourself, for your kids, for your fellow human beings, for the economy, and get vaccinated.

‘Working for Fair Voting Maps in Indiana’ Every 10 years, state electoral districts are redrawn following completion of the U.S. Census. This fall, the Indiana legislature will redraw maps that could either give voters another 10 years of gerrymandered districts or respond to growing public sentiment for “fair maps,” drawn in a transparent process with citizen input.

The movement for fair maps is gaining momentum statewide because more Hoosiers realize that a process controlled by one political party is not independent and is more likely to result in another 10 years of single-party control.

A local Bloomington group decided it was time to join the public conversation.

At first this group included just members of the local League of Women Voters. We decided to produce a video to spread the word about this looming threat: What is gerrymandering? Why the funny name?

How does it subvert representative government? What can we do about it?

We decided to call the video presentation “Working for Fair Voting Maps in Indiana” because that was indeed the intent.

The task of producing the video and all the supporting activities was immense.

It wasn’t a matter of simply throwing together some slides. We needed to develop follow-up materials and provide ways for the public to participate directly with their legislators. As a venerable 100-year organization, the League’s mission is to encourage informed and active participation in government. We also have a history of working with other nonpartisan groups because we know that “going it alone” does not work when

widespread awareness is needed. We began to reach out to other local nonpartisan organizations, seeking their input and voices. The result? A breath of fresh air, an influx of new ideas, and a growing partnership confirming that citizens working together can do more than an organization can on its own.

District election maps, now drawn to suit majority legislators, can easily be drawn to reflect Indiana’s voters more accurately if we all become involved and demand this from our legislators.

2w Along the video journey, more and more organizations have become involved.

Our nonpartisan partners now include the Bloomington Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.; the Monroe County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); the Monroe County chapter of the National Organization for Women; Reverse Citizens United of Monroe County; and the Leagues of Women Voters of Bloomington-Monroe County, Brown County, South Central Indiana, and Indiana. All these organizations encourage readers to contact their state legislators and urge them to support a fair and transparent redistricting process by going to iga.in.gov/legislative/find-legislators.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

Judie Iverson 1940–2021

“A painter, a poet, a mother, and a true friend, she will live on in the hearts of many, humming La Vie en Rose all the while.”

Frances “Judie” Iverson passed away in Bloomington, Indiana, on June 26, 2021, at the age of 80. Judie was a talented painter, a lover of music, an active volunteer, and a beloved mother and grandmother.

Born in Indianapolis on September 7, 1940, to Carrie Lucille Martin Young and Herman F. Mulryan, Judie was gifted artist who was offered a full art scholarship to Indiana University at the age of 16. However, her family soon moved to California and she was unable to attend.

She spent the remainder of her childhood near Los Angeles, where she later married her husband, Charles J. Iverson, on February 6, 1960.

Judie and Charles lived near the beach, where Judie enjoyed spending time. She worked as a medical assistant and then as an administrator for a large medical corporation while the couple raised two children.

During her years in California, she belonged to the Beta Sigma Phi International Women’s Network and was a fundraiser for the National Veteran’s Foundation. A member of numerous museums and an avid supporter of the arts, Judie held season tickets to many popular California performance venues and had an enduring passion for music. She was a fan of jazz, among other genres, and loved the song La Vie en Rose.

When Charles died, Judie moved back to Bloomington to be close to family.

“She missed Indiana’s rolling hills, deep woods, and endless green landscape and was glad to have family nearby,” recalls Judie’s daughter, local singer-songwriter Krista Detor.

Judie’s numerous volunteer endeavors in Bloomington included the Monroe County History Center, the Bloomington

Kiwanis Club, Visually Impaired Preschool Services, Indiana Friends of Nyaka, and the United Presbyterian Church. At the church, Judie was an ordained elder and deacon and chaired the fellowship and kitchen teams for many years. She delighted in her church family and was a longtime supporter of music and artist programs there. For both the history center and Kiwanis, Judie served on the board of directors and helped organize annual fundraising events.

“She was an energetic and engaging person, and a loyal and trusted friend,” says Krista. “She valued family and maintained a lifelong relationship with a small group of friends she met at 19, whom she often traveled with. When her kidneys failed and her health began declining, it was her family and friends that maintained the close ties, encouragement, and love, and in that way, she lives on.”

Judie was known to attend the performances of many local

musicians including opera singer Amanda Biggs, pianist Benjamin Watkins, and singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer. She was also deeply supportive of Krista’s performances.

Judie loved to travel, and particularly enjoyed visiting Ireland, the ancestral home of her father’s family. She took great pride in her Irish roots.

She is survived by her children, Krista Detor and Robert Iverson; her grandchildren, Jeremy Iverson, Ryan Iverson, and Aurora Detor; her step-grandchildren, Lena Weber and Isla Weber; her sister Patricia Moore; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. Iverson, her brother William Mulryan, and her parents, Carrie Lucille Martin Young and Herman F. Mulryan.

Judie’s life was honored in a ceremony on July 3, 2021, at The Hundredth Hill Artist Residency & Retreat.

Rhonda Michael Joins ‘Bloom’ Team Bloom’s new office manager, Rhonda Michael, came on board in May. She is in charge of subscriptions, handles payments, and does 50 other things to ensure the office is functioning.

Rhonda came to Bloomington in 2002 so that her husband could pursue his Ph.D. in the Department of Astronomy at Indiana University. She and her husband have three children, ages 6, 8, and 11. Until recently, Rhonda worked as a substitute teacher and preschool teacher at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church.

Monroe County History Center Hires New Director Daniel Schlegel Jr. is the new director of the Monroe County History Center. by Craig Coley Pat East launched Hanapin Marketing in a spare bedroom with an initial investment of $2,000—the cost of a laptop computer. It grew into a 75-employee industry leader in payper-click advertising and merged with U.K.-based Brainlabs in 2020. Now East is executive director of The Mill, a nonprofit coworking space in Bloomington’s Trades District that supports entrepreneurs. “This is a way to make sure that other folks who come after me can grow their companies with less stress and less bruising than what I went through,” East says.

East, 43, grew up in Martinsville, Indiana, and although he always wanted to start a business, he skipped

economics classes and majored in English at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He credits his liberal arts education for his ability to interpret the novel situations entrepreneurs face.

A month before graduating in 2000, East interviewed for a marketing position at what is now Author Solutions, the selfpublishing company based in Bloomington. He wanted interview practice, not the job, but ended up taking the position. He became adept at placing pay-per-click advertisements, such as the sponsored links that appear at the top of an internet search. In 2004, East started Hanapin, which means “to search” in Filipino, the language spoken in his mother’s home country, the Philippines.

Bloomington didn’t then have the entrepreneurial infrastructure it does today. East regularly traveled to Indianapolis to make the connections that would allow Hanapin to build a client list that included The Weather Channel, Home Depot, and the University of Chicago.

In 2015, East took a break from Hanapin’s day-to-day operations.

“I had been sprinting a marathon for 10 or 12 years, and I was tired,” he says. The company ran fine without him, and his break became indefinite. He spent his free time advising other people starting businesses in Bloomington.

He was so useful to the Bloomington Economic Development Corporation as it was planning The Mill that the BEDC hired East to run the nonprofit organization when it launched in 2017.

In addition to managing 19,000 square feet of coworking space with about 300 members, East drives a number of initiatives to provide funding and expertise for startups. New initiatives include Bloomington Remote, which entices people who can work anywhere to relocate here, and ReBoot, a new-business program for formerly incarcerated people (see Page 62).

The pandemic, he says, “was an eye-opener. Friends died of COVID, and you see that life is short.” He began searching home sites on the internet. “Zillow and realtor.com became my best friends. I saw a house I loved, and it just happened to be in Bloomington,” where a former colleague resides.

Now settled into his new home in the Southampton neighborhood, Alexander says his job can be done from anywhere.

“I’ve worked in New York; I’ve worked in Los Angeles. If you want to tell American stories, tell them from the heartland. I feel I was brought here to find those voices and amplify them.”

by Janet Mandelstam Wesley Alexander had an epiphany while working on a feature at Esquire magazine a few years ago. “The story was about men’s suits,” he recalls. “I saw that all the models were blond, and I said, ‘Where is the diversity in this photo shoot?’”

After that, Alexander says, “I made it my mission to help find the voices that needed to be heard—Black, white, gay, straight, young, old.” It was that sense of purpose that led the new Bloomington resident to his current job casting television shows.

He recently finished casting Love Island on CBS. Previous shows on which he has worked include Queer Eye for Netflix, My Grandmother’s Ravioli for the Cooking Channel, and The Four, Fox’s replacement for American Idol. “In casting you look at people with a clean slate. You don’t ask questions like their age anymore,” he says, declining to reveal his own.

A native of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, Alexander attended Penn State and then studied dance and theater at Point Park University in Pittsburgh. After college he moved to New York to audition for the national tour of A Chorus Line. “I got ‘typed’ out,” he says.

His career in the magazine world included stints as promotion coordinator at GQ and director of photography at Men’s Health and Spa Finder. Along the way, Alexander toured as a performer before realizing that he didn’t need to be the one on stage. “I flipped the switch to focus on helping others get to where they needed to go,” he says.

While living in New York, Alexander says, “I was thinking about reclaiming my rural roots. Home has always been important to me, and I realized that a house, a neighborhood were missing from my life.”

by Carmen Siering Jeremy Hogan is best known as a photographer for The HeraldTimes, where he worked for nearly 22 years. Now the editor and publisher of the online news site The Bloomingtonian, Hogan is also a contributor to Getty Images. He’s won awards for his work covering everything from national politics to natural disasters, but according to him, it’s a wonder he’s a photographer at all.

“All things considered, I shouldn’t even be doing this,” he says. “I don’t come from a long line of college-educated people.”

Hogan hails from California’s Central Valley, in a county he describes as one of the state’s poorest. “My grandparents were all migrant farmworkers in the 1950s and ’60s,” he says.

Hogan describes himself as a curious kid and a voracious reader who happened to pick up a book on photojournalism.

“I had an interest because my dad [a veteran of two tours in Vietnam] had photos from the war,” he says. “I knew there was a really different world out there, and I thought photojournalism looked great. I could travel and see the world and get paid for it.”

His mother saved for a year to buy him his first good camera, and Hogan began taking photos for his high school paper. He got his chance to work for the local newspaper when another photographer’s camera broke at an important wrestling tournament. Hogan was there and got the shot. His photo and photo credit ran in The Porterville Recorder the next day.

After high school, Hogan began taking classes at the local junior college, then transferred to San Jose State University to study photojournalism. Graduating in May 1997, he was in Ann Arbor, Michigan, working on a post-graduation internship when he heard about a full-time job at The H-T. He worked there until January 2019, when he was let go without much warning.

The next month, Hogan and his wife, Toni Arcuri, started The Bloomingtonian, an online visual journalism service covering Bloomington and the surrounding area, available through its website, on social media, and via Patreon.

“I’ve learned that even if corporations don’t value local news, people do, especially in a town like this,” Hogan says.

He hopes those same people will support The Bloomingtonian, which needs more subscribers. “If we don’t get more, we aren’t going to be able to keep publishing,” he says.

marriage in different states to complete their residencies, they are happy to be working in the same city, and to “serve the community that raised me,” says Rajaii.

Her approach to medicine remains as patient centered as possible.

“I went to medical school because I knew I wanted to be able to relate to people the way that I was related to as a patient, or the ways I thought relationships from providers to me as a patient could have been significant,” she says. “Those were my driving forces. If you are in it for the money or the prestige or things like that, those aren’t strong enough reasons to withstand the pressures that medicine puts on you.”

by Tracy Zollinger Turner When Roxanne Rajaii was a senior at Bloomington High School South, she had a strong sense of the career and life she wanted. Fifteen years ago, she and nine other high-achieving high school students were featured in a story called “Great Expectations” in Bloom’s very first issue.

On her way to the University of California, Berkeley to study bioscience, Rajaii said she wanted to become a doctor. And now she is.

After graduate school at Georgetown University, medical school at A.T. Still University in Missouri, and a medical residency in Michigan, Rajaii returned to Bloomington to practice in 2019. She considered several different specializations, but dermatology had a personal pull.

“I was diagnosed with psoriasis when I was 2, so I was in and out of dermatology offices for most of my childhood and young adulthood,” she says. “That was the biggest reason I wanted to go into medicine, and dermatology in particular. I know the

detrimental effects of skin disorders—not just on the skin, but on a person’s mental health and how they perceive themselves and their confidence. The office that I work in now [Dermatology Center of Southern Indiana] is actually the office that I went to as a kid, so I have truly come full circle.”

Rajaii was born in Bloomington but spent part of her early childhood in Iran with her mother, teacher and artist Rosa Payravi, and her ailing grandfather. Rajaii’s father, Mohammed, remained in Indiana, where he worked at the Indiana University Herman B Wells Library. Rajaii returned to Bloomington in elementary school and remains connected to the very first friends she made at Childs Elementary. “They welcomed me to a new school and to a new culture and helped me with the language,” she says. “I think that’s one of my most profound memories.”

Using the smooth, clean lines produced by applying consistent pressure to the top of a spray can, Musch, a.k.a. “Moosy,” turns ordinary walls into large-scale works of art.

With a grid system to keep his proportions in check, he relaxes into the 20

sound of the spray paint as he works. The 20-year-old artist sees it as his mission to add “color, wonder, and joy” to public spaces.

“I hope these murals can be a source of pride and conversation for the community,” he says.

The first mural, at the building’s northeast corner, depicts Musch’s ex-girlfriend with a serene expression. Her hands are bound by straight, white strings—a motif he intends to repeat in each piece to convey his own questioning of free will.

“Is it you in control? Is it a god-like figure? Or is it more of the environment around you that is influencing what happens?

That’s the idea I’m going for,” he explains, “and I’m really hitting it hard in my murals right now.”

Being commissioned to create something so large and visible is a dream assignment for a young muralist like Musch. It has already led to other paying jobs, including at a bar in Bloomfield and The Warehouse’s indoor skate park, where he’s painting pro skaters Tony Hawk, Lizzie Armanto, and Steve Caballero against a background of broken skateboards, symbolizing the many failed attempts along their path to success.

Musch will be a junior at Indiana University this fall. After graduation, he envisions a career in public art. “That’s the dream,” he says.

Musch comes from a family of creatives in Rensselaer, Indiana, a town of 6,000 about 30 minutes north of Lafayette. “My hometown was a small, dying town,” he says.

That was, until his family helped develop an art walk showcasing the work of regional artists. As a 15-year-old kid, he watched as muralists beautified his tired town, turning drab facades into striking focal points.

The experience inspired him to “go big” and to employ smart design to enliven the world around him.

“With pieces this big, nothing seems impossible,” he says. “No wall is really stopping me anymore.”

focus groups, holds a monthly meeting to share photos and techniques, and organizes field trips.

Kellar, 66, a semi-retired professional photographer who has been a BPC member for more than 40 years, says the BPC was active in the 1940s—and perhaps earlier—but died out and was then re-formed in the 1970s.

Sarah Slover, 43, is a semi-professional who joined two years ago. “The people in the club are welcoming and nurturing and want to meet you wherever you are,” she says.

4th Street Festival Returns In Person

by Paul Bickley The 4th Street Festival of the Arts & Crafts will be an in-person event this year after being held virtually in 2020.

Now in its 45th year, the festival normally features 125 artists who exhibit and sell their paintings, photographs, sculptures, fiber arts, glass and wood arts, and jewelry at local, regional, and national art fairs. Area nonprofit arts groups also set up booths promoting community projects and art-related opportunities, and musicians and other performance artists entertain visitors.

The two-day event has attracted as many as 40,000 people from throughout the Midwest.

Rebecca Lowery, vice president of the festival committee, says the organization adapted to a virtual platform in 2020 by launching new web pages that allowed visitors to access the artists, community art booths, a children’s booth, a music tent, a spoken-word tent, and an information booth from the safety of their own homes.

Visitors to the website could purchase art online, download coloring and craft projects for children, and view musical performances and spoken-word poetry in the form of videos created by the performers.

And while the temporary online model wasn’t as financially fruitful for most of the artists, “the offering of a virtual presence let people know that we didn’t just give up, and kept us in the minds of our patrons,” Lowery says.

This year’s event will see 80 artists set up booths instead of the usual 125 to accommodate 10-foot spacing between booths, and the music and spoken-word stages will remain virtual. As of now, masks will be required.

Lowery says that most artists she knows are happy to return to live festivals. “Online sales cannot compare to art fairs for volume of sales and the quality of interactions between patrons and artists,” she explains. “Each artist’s work is unique and just needs to be seen in person.”

The festival will take place—rain or shine—on East 4th Street between South Indiana Avenue and Grant Street on Saturday, September 4, from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. and Sunday, September 5, from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Learn more at 4street.org.

by Kristen Senz Blending classical music with the wonders of nature, ChamberFest Brown County will join the lineup of regional summer music festivals when it premieres in Nashville, Indiana, this August.

ChamberFest celebrates the legacy of Ludwig van Beethoven, whose music was inspired by nature, and aims to draw new audiences to classical music, says pianist and ChamberFest Artistic Director Andreas Ioannides, a former doctoral student at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music.

“The thought of playing music of this caliber, surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in Indiana, is really appealing to us, and we hope to our audience as well,” says Ionnaides.

Scheduled for August 17–22 at multiple Nashville venues, the festival will feature two-time Grammy winner Pacifica Quartet, the quartet-in-residence at the Jacobs School. Utah-based Fry Street Quartet will also give a performance that incorporates a film on sustainability and environmental issues.

Ionnaides will perform with the Fry Street Quartet and as part of a trio. Festival secretary and co-organizer Futaba Niekawa— a pianist and Jacobs School faculty member—will play music by Beethoven in a separate concert with renowned ensemble Volante Winds.

To orient audience members during the festival, IU music theory professor Dr. Roman Ivanovitch will give a lecture about Beethoven at the Brown County History Center that will touch on how the composer’s life and legacy relate to present-day racial and political tensions.

Festival organizers hope the festival will attract both outdoor enthusiasts visiting Brown County and classical music fans. For people who may not be as familiar with chamber music, Ionnaides says the festival offers an introduction to the genre.

“We encourage everyone to give one concert a shot,” he says.

“If given the chance, the music can speak for itself. I think it will convert a lot of listeners.”

ChamberFest is produced by the nonprofit RiverSong Music Inc. Most of the ChamberFest performances are free, but some require tickets, which can be reserved online at chamberfestbrowncounty. com. All performances are free for those ages 18 and under.

New Cook Center at IU Strengthens Link to Local Arts Community At the new Gayle Karch Cook Center for Public Arts and Humanities at Indiana University, exhibits by IU faculty and community artists and a regional artist-in-residence program are creating stronger links between the university and the Bloomington arts and cultural communities.

Elizabeth Claffey, IU assistant professor of photography at the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design, says the center helps develop a collective art experience.

“To have the opportunity to present work to the local community and fellow faculty is a rare opportunity and treat,” explains Claffey.

“The community conversations we can create around artwork are really dynamic.”

Following a $2 million interior restoration of the historic Maxwell Hall building in IU’s Old Crescent, the center has an exhibition gallery for displaying faculty, student, and community art; a 130-seat grand hall for lectures, large exhibits, performances, and receptions for the community; and a conference wing for presentations, lectures, and academic exchanges related to arts and the humanities.

“It’s gorgeous here,” says Dallis-Comentale. “It was mostly restored so its historical bones could be shown off.”

A gift from historical preservationist and philanthropist Gayle Cook—co-founder of Cook Group and an IU alumna—and a grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities funded the restoration. Floors, ceilings, and other features at Maxwell Hall, formerly an administrative center built in 1890, were restored.

Alongside the Arts and Humanities Council—which DallisComentale directs— the Cook Center is home to IU’s most publicfacing arts and humanities groups, including the Center for Rural Engagement and the College Arts and Humanities Institute.

Beginning in September, the center will host a three-month Regional Artists in Residency program each semester, as well as the Indiana Arts Commission’s On-Ramp Creative Entrepreneur Accelerator program, which provides a three-day business training seminar for artists. The center also takes part in the city’s mile-long Gallery Walk, held the first Friday of every month.

Alison Kingsley Artist & Educator

As a child, Alison Kingsley loved drawing and painting.

She relished summer art camps, and high school art classes were the highlight of her days. That’s when she decided to become an art teacher and develop her diverse artistic talents.

Now, Kingsley, 28, strives to inspire students at Edgewood High School, where she’s in her third year of teaching painting, stained glass, 3-D art, and ceramics. As an artist, she paints and draws “lively pseudo-abstract works,” and creates sculptures from found materials and ceramics.

“It’s the best of both worlds—being an educator and artist at the same time,” says Kingsley. She moved from Long Island, New York, to Bloomington with her husband, Liam, in 2017, when he was accepted into the Indiana University doctoral history program.

Kingsley graduated from State University of New York at Potsdam in 2016, with a bachelor of fine arts degree

in oil painting, and a bachelor’s degree in art history and art education. In June 2021, she earned a master’s degree in art education online from Morningside College in Iowa.

Kingsley explains her paintings are abstract expressionistic, with recognizable images and gestural brush-strokes or markmaking. “I’m very fun-focused, and I like to use lots of different colors,” says Kingsley.

She adds that her art sometimes reflects her emotions.

Viridian, located at 1600 W. Bloomfield Road, has been closed for renovations since June but will reopen on August 21 for a grand opening celebration from 5–8 p.m.

Photo by Rodney Margison “From the January opening, we have been testing the waters to see if there is enough interest in local artists’ works during the pandemic,” says multimedia artist and Viridian founder Irina Shishova, 43, who was born and raised in Moscow. “We were thrilled to meet the enthusiasm of Bloomington’s art lovers. More than 30 paintings by our artists have found new homes since the gallery opened.”

The gallery, named after Arkhip Kuindzhi’s painting Moonlight Night on the Dniepr (1880), is run by all 10 participating members, who take turns working shifts and continuously display about 150 of their artworks. The membership includes three watercolorists, four brush oil painters, a palette-knife oil painter, a fabric artist, and Shishova, who works in pencils, watercolors, oils, and acrylics.

Viridian also hosts local art group meetings and exhibits other local artists’ work. It will display the Bloomington Portrait Group’s work from August 21 through September 30 and the Bloomington Watercolor Society’s (BWS) from October 1 through November 14. “BWS is probably the biggest local art group, uniting over 80 local artists,” Shishova says, “and almost every member of the gallery is also a BWS member.”

Shishova established the gallery to provide local artists, many of whom are her friends, with an affordable place to display and sell their works. “Also,” she says, “I believed that after all this COVID-related doom and gloom, Bloomington could do with another art gallery.”

“For the four months Viridian was open,” Shishova continues, “it was a crossroads for artists and art-loving people and a place where artists could finally meet each other in person after such a long and dreadful period of isolation.”

Recipes from Gourmet Chefs At the Stone Age Institute Kathy Schick and her husband, Nick Toth, founders and co-directors of the Stone Age Institute, have traveled the globe and sampled food in more than 40 countries, developing a “great appreciation for international cuisine,” Schick says. “We especially like Indian, Chinese, Thai, French, and Italian.”

They also love to cook.

Toth learned “in earnest” how to cook as a graduate student at Oxford University, Schick says. He bought The Penguin Cookery Book (with no penguins on the menu, she adds) and traded cooking duties with his housemates.

Schick, meanwhile, roasted her first Thanksgiving turkey at age 12 and in college ventured into international cuisine.

“The Time-Life International Cookbook series helped pave the way,” she says.

That resulted in special dinners on Sundays for the couple, pre-pandemic.

“Being homebound for much of the pandemic, we found it easy—and an enjoyable diversion—to focus on cooking a fun meal and exploring new recipes almost on a daily basis,” Schick says.

“And posting photos of our dishes on Facebook became a new hobby!”

Here, we present two of Toth and Schick’s favorite recipes from quarantine.

Bouillabaisse Seafood (use an assortment), such as: • Clams (clean well), about 1 pound • Mussels (clean well), about 1 pound • Sea scallops, about 1/2 pound to 1 pound • Large shrimp, about 1 pound (shelled, leaving the tail on, and deveined) • Firm whitefish (such as Pacific cod, red snapper, monkfish, turbot, striped bass, porgy, grouper, etc.) cut into edible pieces of about 2 to 2 1/2 inches (keep chilled until ready to add) Vegetables: • 1 onion, chopped medium fine • Several cloves garlic, minced • 2 celery stalks, chopped medium fine • 1 carrot, finely chopped • 1 or 2 potatoes, cut into 1/2-inch cubes • 2 cups chopped tomatoes, with pulp and juice (canned tomatoes are okay) • Small bulb of fennel, chopped (optional) Spices and herbs: • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon crumbled or ground saffron • 1 bay leaf • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley • 1/2 teaspoon dried tarragon • Salt and pepper to taste Other: • 2 to 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 1/2 cup dry white wine • 1 to 2 tablespoons Pernod (optional) • 3 cups of homemade or bought seafood stock (fish, shrimp, crab, etc.)

• Crusty French bread (e.g. baguette) Instructions: 1. Wash the shellfish, removing beards and debris from clams and mussels. Peel the shrimp, leaving the tails on, and devein them.

2. Chop the vegetables 3. Add 2 to 4 tablespoons of olive oil to a large Dutch oven. Heat oil on medium heat. Cook onion, celery, garlic, carrot, potato, and fennel (if using) until vegetables are starting to soften (about 5 to 10 minutes). |

4. Add seafood stock, saffron, tomatoes, the bay leaf, parsley, and tarragon and bring to a boil.

Cook until all the vegetables are cooked through, and season to taste.

5. Lower heat to a simmer and add the white wine and, in phases, the seafood. Add thicker pieces of fish earlier, then add the mussels, clams, shrimp, and scallops. If some fish are thin and quick to cook, add late. When the mussels and clams are all open, the fish should be cooked through (5 to 10 minutes). If using Pernod, add shortly before taking off the heat.

Add additional chopped parsley to garnish at end (optional).

6. Ladle into a serving tureen or into individual bowls, giving each bowl portions of fish and shellfish. Serve with slices of a good, crusty French bread.

Cornish Hens On the Grill With Chili Butter and Grilled Corn Salsa Ingredients: • 4 Cornish hens • Chili butter: - 6 dried New Mexican chilis - 6 tablespoons melted butter - Salt to taste • Grilled corn salsa: - 4 ears of corn (shucked) - Olive oil for brushing corn - 1 ripe tomato, chopped - 1/2 red onion, chopped - 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro and extra to garnish - 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice - Salt to taste • 1/2 cup chicken broth

Instructions: 1. Soak the dried chilis to cover in warm water for at least 2 hours. Remove chilis and reserve soaking liquid.

Remove and discard seeds and stems.

Place chilis in a blender or food processor with 1/3 cup of the soaking liquid. Blend to a smooth puree. Pour in the melted butter and blend. Season to taste. Reserve 1 cup of this chili butter for a serving sauce.

2. Use the remaining chili butter to marinate the hens in a nonreactive bowl, working the butter around them entirely. Marinate for one to two hours at room temperature (so the butter doesn’t harden).

3. While the hens marinate, make the corn salad. Heat a gas grill to medium and roast the corn until it is cooked and slightly charred (5 to 10 minutes).

Remove the corn and let cool. When cool, cut kernels from the cobs, add remaining salsa ingredients and set aside or refrigerate.

4. With the gas grill on medium heat, place the hens on the grill and brown on all sides, a total of 5 to 10 minutes.

turn off some of the burners so you can continue cooking indirectly. Put the hens on a rack over a drip pan, baste with chili butter from the marinade, and cook until done on indirect heat at around 400ºF for approximately 60 to 90 minutes (depending on the size of the hens and the heat of the grill) until the juices run clear or a thermometer placed in the thigh registers 180ºF. Transfer the cooked hens to a plate, cover with aluminum foil, and let sit for 10 minutes.

Make a bed of corn salsa on a serving plate.

In a small pan, heat the reserved chili butter and add enough chicken broth to make a smooth sauce.

Place the hens on top of the corn salsa and serve garnished with chopped cilantro and the chili butter sauce.

Local Vienna Lagers Nice Beers to Bridge Summer and Autumn My love of German beers seems to run in my cultural DNA—whether I am enjoying a crisp summer Kölsch, a spicy Hefeweizen, a chocolatey Dunkel, or a rich Oktoberfest Märzen. But a good challenge for my favorite German beer—and perhaps the least appreciated style—is the Vienna lager, a perfect beer to bridge late summer and early autumn.

Vienna lagers are copper-colored beers, with a malty and slightly bready aroma and flavor, gentle hop bitterness, a medium body, and the crispness that lager yeast imparts—a very drinkable beer that can appeal to a variety of beer lovers.

The style dates back to the 1840s, when advances in kilning technologies from England allowed brewers to dry their malt and impart gentler, bready flavors than they previously could with direct-fired kilns, which produced deeper and sometimes smokey characteristics. Vienna lagers are closely related to Märzens (Oktoberfest), although that style is often a bit sweeter, with less hop character, a heavier body, and higher alcohol content. Because of the malts used, Vienna lagers will only have a slight grainy sweetness that is balanced well by spicy German hops and a crisp lager fermentation, not a caramelly sweetness that can overwhelm.

Two of our local breweries offer quite enjoyable versions of the Vienna lager, both being very similar, with subtle differences.

Switchyard Brewing Company has recently added a Vienna lager to its core lineup, likely a permanent replacement to

the red ale they previously offered. It pours a rich copper color with a light tan head, and the aroma is malty and clean with a slight yeasty smell that complements the bready character. The taste is also malty, with the most subtle hint of roasted malt— enough for depth but not a challenge to the style. There is a slight sweetness from the grain, but the crispness of the lager balances that out well. A gentle presence of German hops adds some bitterness toward the end, adding to that crispness. It’s very smooth drinking with a moderate body— enough to add character but still be light and refreshing at the end of summer.

The Tap has offered its Brickyard Vienna Lager since they opened, and I remember it being the first beer I had when visiting the new establishment. Its bright copper color is clear enough to read a menu through. The aroma is lightly malty and bready, characteristics that also lead the flavor. It has a bit more hop bitterness than Switchyard’s beer—not overwhelming, but challenging the malt a bit for a balanced flavor, with a very subtle spiciness from the Perle and Saaz hops.

My call? Both of these Vienna lagers are smooth and refreshing, appealing to a range of beer-lovers. The differences are subtle, but if you like a little more bitterness, go with the Brickyard. If you like a malty-bready character to lead the way, head over to Switchyard. Better yet, grab a few growlers to go and compare them with friends on your patio.

The Seedlings Flower Truck Coming to a Venue Near You Three years ago, Laura Deck had left her teaching career and was feeling lost. She grew up in a family that farmed livestock, but she always had a different type of farm in mind: a flower farm. With time on her hands and 3-year-old twins and a 4-year-old daughter to care for, Deck decided to see how far that dream could take her.

During her first year growing flowers, she hand-planted 5,000 sunflowers. An especially wet spring washed away a majority of those seeds, plus most of her financial investment. By the end of the season, however, Deck had managed to produce 50 seedlings and enough zinnias to fill vases for the entire duration of the summer farmers’ markets.

“It’s a lesson that we can only do what we can do, and then just have faith that it will all be what it’s supposed to be in the end,” she says.

Deck’s farm continued to grow through hard work, learning from her mistakes, and listening to her mentors, she says. Deck’s husband, Logan; her extended family; her crew of “garden girls;” and her assistant were the boots on the ground that enabled the small farm to grow into The Seedlings, a name Deck chose to pay homage to her children and her personal growth.

Deck and her husband also purchased a vintage Chevy pickup and converted it to “meet a unique niche as an on-site venue flower truck,” she says, allowing her to drive to different locations around Monroe County as a pop-up flower farm. The Seedlings Flower Truck is available for both public and private events.

The Seedlings also offers arrangement classes, U-pick opportunities, wedding arrangements, and Christmas wreath workshops. “Long term, we hope to create a space indoors at our farm for guests to attend floral design classes year-round,” Deck says.

This year, The Seedlings has planted 100,000 sunflowers and 10,000 other varieties of blooms. Laura insists that this would be impossible without the support she has received from their community, customers, and family.

“I feel like the farm and my family are one and the same. This is what we do and who we are, it’s a way of life,” Deck says.

“I truly feel that we were made to do just what we are doing.”

A Place to ‘Get Messy & Let Loose’ High school sweethearts Emily and Eric McArtor— originally from Greene County, Indiana—have always been “crafty.” Woodworking was an art that Eric’s grandfather instilled in him as a youth, and Emily’s grandmother kept her busy as a child by recycling everyday items into crafts.

So when Eric, now 30, began his second deployment to Afghanistan as a medic with the U.S. Army, Emily went to work at a craft studio in Washington state, where he was stationed, and soon fell in love with teaching adults how to “get messy and let loose.”

“I always set large, ambitious goals to accomplish during [Eric’s] deployments in order to keep myself occupied,” says Emily, 29. “That’s how Craft Happens came to be—this massive labor of love.”

After moving to Bloomington, Emily opened Craft Happens at 879 S. College Mall Road in November 2019 during Eric’s third deployment.

woodworking project from start to finish, as well as take-and-make kits to craft at home.

“It’s really a crafting studio that takes you from start to art,” Emily says. “We empower the least crafty person and love challenging people who think they can’t do it, because it simply isn’t true.”

But four months after the shop opened its doors, it was forced to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “To be honest, COVID was really rough,” Emily says. “We had just found out we were expecting our son six weeks before the pandemic. So, since we couldn’t have people in the studio, I drove back to Washington to be with Eric, and we took the time to practice our craft.”

In the interim, Craft Happens Customs was born as a way to keep the shop afloat during the pandemic. Clients contacted Emily and Eric with ideas for custom pieces, and the couple built, designed, and painted each one from the safety of their home.

Married since 2015, the couple recently completed a custom memorial wall for the Army’s 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment—a project that was a personal favorite for them both.

Wedding Dresses Galore At My Sister’s Closet’s New Discount Boutique

by Rodney Margison Tucked away behind two sets of steel doors in the back of My Sister’s Closet hides a treasure trove in what used to be a car detailing shop.

More than 200 wedding dresses in plastic garment bags hang from clothes racks, many with the manufacturers’ labels still attached.

And all are available at bargain prices.

The wedding boutique at My Sister’s Closet—a nonprofit, secondhand women’s apparel shop at 414 S. “We’ve always had a certain degree of formal wear that we put out in the spring, but we never really put out much bridal because we didn’t have any room on the floor,” says Sandy Keller, the organization’s founder and executive director. “As soon as it became known that we were accepting wedding gowns with this new space, the donations just miraculously started pouring in.”

And the dresses are remarkable, Keller says. Many of them are made from French silks, Italian lace, or Swarovski crystals, with original price tags of “well over $2,000.” Your cost: $45 to around $1,100.

Donations of gowns came from a variety of sources, including vendors whose 2020 designs didn’t sell because of the pandemic. “If you want to put 2021 stock on the floor, you have to make room for it, so people donated it,” Kellar says. One person closed her bridal show at the convention center, drove to My Sister’s Closet, and donated 75 new dresses.

And though in-kind donations are up, monetary donations aren’t—a situation Kellar says she’s hoping to reverse. “During the pandemic, all fundraisers ceased to exist, so we’re hoping that we can do something and get people on board,” she says.

“Hopefully, with all these gowns, we’re not only able to pay the rent, but we’re able to help be part of some people’s really great life stories,” Keller adds.

When Lisa Stantz decided to open Unraveled Quilt Store in Spencer, Indiana, in 2016, it felt like a gift to herself. So, she made her April birthday her first day of business. “It was something big for me,” she says. “It was my special day and I just wanted to share it with my store. It’s my baby.”

From the beginning, a sense of play and celebration were essential to Stantz’s ideas about how she wanted customers to feel when they came to Unraveled, bucking the perfectionism that can sometimes be part of quilting culture. “I wanted to create a space where people could come and get inspired and not feel judged,” she says. “I wanted the focus to be on what brings joy to your life. We always kid and say, ‘There are no quilting police.’

There is no right or wrong way.”

Stantz first began quilting in her sorority 30 years ago. A Spencer native, she has always loved creating—a trait she enthusiastically shares with her three kids, four grandkids, and the community. “My mom always made things, my grandma was a seamstress, and my other grandma was a quilter and project-maker,” she says. “I grew up around creative women.”

Through the pandemic, Stantz found ways to keep Unraveled growing. As it hit its five-year anniversary milestone this spring, it was included as a Top Shop in Better Homes & Gardens’ Quilt Sampler magazine, including

a foundation paper piecing pattern [a popular quilting technique] called “Tumbling Prisms” designed by Stantz’s daughter and social media guru, Laura.

Stantz recently expanded her space and now displays more than 3,000 bolts of fabric, kits, patterns, and more. She also has a growing national audience on Facebook, where she broadcasts live on Wednesday nights with news about what’s in the store, craft challenges, and lots of warm humor.

Her Quilt Retreats at McCormick’s Creek State Park moved to a virtual format during the pandemic and now draws quilters from all over. This fall, Stantz is hoping for a hybrid retreat and a return to in-person classes at the store.

Temujin Gold: A Swim Coach Without a Pool to Coach In

by Greg Siering The pandemic brought many challenges, but for local swim coach Temujin Gold, that challenge was almost overwhelming—a year of coaching a swim club without a swimming pool.

Gold, 39, has been involved with competitive swimming most of his life. He swam for Indiana University from 2001– 2004 and later coached at various levels for more than 15 years—from the national team of El Salvador to collegiate teams to club teams and swim camps across the country.

Gold founded his latest team, Agon, in 2015 as a competitive swim club for Ellettsville and the surrounding area, offering swim lessons, coaching, and opportunities for competition for both youth and adults. The club’s name comes from ancient Greek which, Gold notes, refers to “the struggle that is inherent in the pursuit of excellence.”

That concept is at the heart of Gold’s coaching philosophy. Emphasizing the character and potential developed by sports, Agon rewards athletes for embracing new challenges, whether by taking a workout to the next level or finding a way to help a teammate improve. “They

learn the importance of that struggle in practice,” Gold says.

“It’s cool to see them embrace it and to ask for things to be more challenging, and to recognize that this is part of getting better and finding out what they can do.”

Having a swim team without a pool due to COVID-19 restrictions was part of that challenge. Gold created outdoor workouts throughout the year—including hikes, bike rides, yoga, sledding, and lake swimming—that blended physical conditioning and in-person socialization aimed at keeping the team healthy and together. And now that COVID-19 restrictions are lifting, his team has returned to the pool. With their home pool at Edgewood High School closed for renovation until fall, the team is currently sharing pool time at Bloomington High School North.

Participation in Agon is still down, Gold notes, because of pandemic disruptions and the inconvenience of a borrowed pool.

But struggle is at the heart of Agon’s philosophy, and his swimmers are back in the water, competing and rebuilding their team with hopes of soon returning to their normal routine. In other words, doing what is necessary in their pursuit of excellence.

‘It Takes a Village’ to Protect B-town’s Only Water Source

by Peter Dorfman The City of Bloomington has one source of drinking water for its roughly 84,000 inhabitants: The reservoir of Lake Monroe, about 20 miles south of downtown.

At 17 square miles, it’s Indiana’s largest man-made lake, but it’s an essential—and fragile—resource.

The lake is fed by a 441-square-mile watershed sprawling across five counties, via their creeks and rivers. “Most of Bloomington itself is not in the watershed,” notes Sherry Mitchell-Bruker, hydrologist and founder of the Friends of Lake Monroe (FLM), a nonprofit organization that has spearheaded efforts to protect the watershed since 2016.

Mitchell-Bruker earned a Ph.D. from the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Administration (now the O’Neill School). After doing federally funded research in the Florida Everglades and the Sierra Nevada, she returned to Monroe County in 2015. “I was shocked to discover there was no organized group dedicated to protecting Lake Monroe, and no watershed management plan,” she recalls. “There had been studies, and recommendations made, but they weren’t followed through. No one had started such a group, so I did.”

FLM is developing a complete watershed management plan, expected to be completed by January 2022.

“We’ve completed our monitoring and are analyzing the data and developing an action plan,” Mitchell-Bruker says. “We’ll apply for funds from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management in September.”

The plan is intended to support solid science, but also to build a coalition among the watershed’s public and private stakeholders, while also educating the public.

FLM has several board members in common with the Lake Monroe Water Fund (LMWF), whose mission is to channel donor capital to support the programs that protect and preserve Bloomington’s sole water source.

Jane Martin, a Bloomington-based venture capitalist and fundraiser for multiple philanthropies, heads the LMWF. “In 2017, the Nature Conservancy, which has created dozens of water funds across the U.S., asked if I thought we could create one for Lake Monroe,” Martin says. “Ours is the first in Indiana.”

Bloomingtonians can get involved in protecting the lake in several ways.

Volunteers participate in shoreline and watershed clean-up events and can educate themselves via organized hikes and group paddles in the watershed. The FLM’s member newsletter can provide details. And, of course, both the FLM and the Water Fund welcome donations.

“It’s going to take a village to protect our sole water source,” Martin asserts.

“That’s our sole focus.”

Famous Architect’s Mid-Century Modern, Glass-Walled Building to Adorn IU Campus

Brackney Peg Faimon suspects the plans were tucked away for decades in the dark. “They’re in really good shape,” says Faimon, founding dean of Indiana University’s Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design. “There are 20 old-fashioned blueprints made with a photographic process, so they’re susceptible to light.”

The school recently purchased what may be the only full set of floor plans for the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe–inspired building presently under construction on 52

“Having them is a wonderful addition to the history—and story—of the building.”

Mies (1886-1969) was a renowned German-born American architect who is widely considered to be one of the pioneers of modern architecture. Among his many honors, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963.

staff offices as well as collaboration and community spaces for the school. It was funded by philanthropists Sidney and Lois Eskenazi. An IU student in 1952, Sidney Eskenazi recalled that Mies had designed a building for IU. “Sidney had some drawings and showed them to [former IU President] Michael McRobbie who got extremely intrigued, because he loves architecture and had to know more,” Faimon explains.

Archive searches at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art yielded answers. Mies designed the

10,000-square-foot space in the early ’50s.

His associate, David Brenner, finished the building plans.

Some updates were necessary. One of the structure’s “legs,” originally intended for storage, now will be an exit stair.

They’ve also included an elevator, HVAC improvements, and better glass. “There are some things they didn’t have to worry about in 1950,” Faimon says.

She continues, “The other leg is fully surrounded in limestone, and, between the two is an open area.” An oculus will float above the open space. “There’s going to be a very ‘inside-outside’ quality on that first floor,” she adds.

The new building isn’t the school’s only Mies connection. Its not-so-distant cousin, the former Republic newspaper building in Columbus, Indiana, houses the school’s graduate program in architecture.

With its own “inside-outside” feel, the Columbus building was designed by architect Myron Goldsmith. Built in 1971, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2012.

“Goldsmith worked for Mies van der Rohe at the time that [Mies] designed our building,” Faimon notes. “So, there’s not just a modernist aesthetic connection.

There’s also this historical connection between these architectural figures ... all working together during that time.”

B-town’s Eleanor Krause at Harvard Studying Community and Culture

by Carmen Siering Eleanor Krause is a Ph.D. candidate at Harvard University studying public policy. Among her research interests is the economics of place—how our communities and culture influence the way we engage with the world.

Krause, the daughter of real estate appraiser Anne Hurley and photography educator Jim Krause, grew up in Bloomington, attended Bloomington High School South, and, most importantly, it seems, spent her summers at Camp Palowopec in Brown County.

“It shaped my love of the outdoors,” Krause, 30, says. “Half of my friends to this day are from that camp. There’s a bumper sticker that reads, ‘Camp Changes Lives,’ which is absolutely true, at least for me.”

Campers take adventure trips to places like the Red River Gorge, where Krause discovered her love of rock climbing.

“I grew up climbing in Eastern Kentucky,” Krause says. It was there that another bumper sticker caught her eye. That one reads “Friends of Coal.”

As an undergraduate, Krause studied environmental studies and political science at the University of Vermont. During one class, students turned a discussion on coal mining into a single “ban coal” argument—one she couldn’t support. “I thought, ‘That’s not fair. It’s the only work they have,’” she says. “That got me more interested in income inequality and the economics of place.”

After graduating from the University of Vermont in 2012, Krause returned to Kentucky, living in a tent, working at a local pizza place, and rock climbing while looking for a real job.

As it turns out, finding a job was difficult with an undergraduate degree. After two years, she began graduate studies at the University of Washington, receiving an M.P.A. in 2016. Two years later she started her doctoral work at Harvard.

Krause says part of her research focuses on a piece of the economic puzzle she feels other economists have ignored.

“I’m trying to write a model which incorporates attachment to place as a cost to mobility,” she explains. “So even if you’ve lost your job, there is a location-specific tie that makes it costly for you to move.”

With about three more years at Harvard, Krause plans to stay in academia after she receives her doctorate.

“If the University of Kentucky would hire me, I would move there in a heartbeat,” she says. “I love it there.”

Ivy Tech Rolls Out Cost-Saving Programs for Its Students

by Carmen Siering In a move designed to make the cost of post-secondary education more affordable and predictable, Ivy Tech Community College has introduced a tuition model that freezes tuition from now through the 2022–23 academic year, rolls the cost of textbooks into the course fee structure, and promises that no fulltime student will pay more than $4,500 per year to attend, no matter how many credit hours they take per semester.

In addition, the Summer-Flex Scholarship program allows eligible fulltime students who do not take 15 credit hours in a semester to take up to six free credit hours over the summer in order to reach 30 credit hours for the year.

While part-time students will continue to pay for classes per credit hour, textbooks are also included in their course fees.

“We want students to be successful and have everything they need on day one,” Ivy Tech–Bloomington Chancellor Jennie Vaughn says. “Faculty tell me their students are struggling financially, that they can’t afford their books. I think this is going to be a gamechanger.”

Of the 6,000 students on the Bloomington campus, approximately 3,300 are degree-seeking students who have declared a major, Vaughn says. Of those, the most recent data show 60% attend part time and 40% full time. She feels the new tuition structure may change that.

“When I think about Ivy+, where the books are included and the tuition is banded, I see this number flipping,” Vaughn says. “I can imagine students looking at this and realizing that if they can take just one more class, it’s a way of graduating just a little bit sooner.”

Ivy+ is a statewide program approved by the Ivy Tech State Board of Trustees.

Its adoption makes Ivy Tech one of the first schools in Indiana to utilize this type of tuition model. The cost of textbooks in

the 2021–22 academic year is covered through the federal government’s Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund.

“I really applaud college leadership. They’ve taken their time to do this right by investigating other colleges and seeing how their retention rates and graduation rates are rising [with similar programs],” Vaughn says. “You’ve just got to do the right thing.

I’m excited we can offer this to our students and to our community.”

How a New Small Business Survived the Pandemic

by Sophie Bird When Board & Brush Creative Studio’s Bloomington location opened in January 2020, franchisee Nicole DeGain was looking forward to hosting in-person workshops that show participants how to craft their own wooden décor signs.

“There’s such a great feeling in doing a doit-yourself project and it being completed,” DeGain says. “I love being able to give someone that maybe wouldn’t look into a DIY themselves at home the space to do it.”

But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit 58

a couple of months later and it became clear that in-person gathering would be difficult for quite some time, DeGain and her husband, Pat, were forced to get a little creative.

They started selling @ Home Kits, which allowed customers to enjoy the concept of Board & Brush from the comfort and safety of their own homes until the studio was able to reopen at a limited capacity in June 2020.

“We were closed for a month,” DeGain says. “No retail, no workshops, none of that

from March 16 through April 17 [2020]. April 17 was when we started selling some retail stuff. We have the ‘@ Home Kits’ and we started doing backyard games, movie night boxes, and S’mores station boxes.”

Even in a post-vaccination world, DeGain continues to stress the importance of safety.

Board & Brush Bloomington is currently accommodating private workshops as small as four people and encourages customers to reschedule if necessary.

“We no longer require masks at public workshops. However, should anyone in our

workshop want to wear masks, our staff will happily mask up with them,” DeGain says.

The average Board & Brush workshop lasts about 3 hours. Guests select a workshop time online and register a project. People who attend a workshop together can choose different designs, DeGain says, and will get to take their project home that night. “Everyone gets excited for the big reveal,” she says.

There are more than 400 designs to choose from, with up to 10 new designs being launched each month.

Each table gets an instructor to help guide participants through the sign-making process, including distressing, sanding, staining, stenciling, and painting.

“It doesn’t matter what your artistic ability is,” DeGain says. All designs in the standard gallery cost $68, and customers can choose from seven different types of stain and more than 90 colors of paint. “A lot of our signs come personalizable, so it could have your name or your family’s names,” DeGain says. “We have a lot of Indiana signs, which is pretty fun.”

DeGain and her husband run the shop with help from their two daughters, ages 10 and 13. “You’re going to see myself or Pat here if you come for a workshop,” DeGain says.

When the pandemic hit last year, the store was in jeopardy again.

“We shut down, and we had to reinvent our business model overnight” he says. “Before March 2020, online sales were just 2% of our business.” When the Browns posted the store’s precarious situation on social media, “600 care package orders for books came in from all over the country,” he says.

For local customers, Brown hopped on his bicycle to deliver orders that had been placed online. “I put 1,000 miles on my bike running a courier service around Bloomington.” The store has been open with reduced hours since last fall.

For the anniversary celebration on June 4, Brown livestreamed an interview with Starcs on the history of Caveat Emptor. Commemorative merchandise was offered for sale at $19.71 to honor the year the store opened, and all books were half price.

“We were mobbed,” Brown says.

Caveat Emptor has 40,000 used books in stock, including rare first editions, scholarly books in many fields, and foreign language books.

“Not a lot of beach reads,” Brown says.

Caveat Emptor acquires its books in various ways. “Some people sell or donate books, some come from estates, and we trade for store credit.”

Among recent acquisitions of note were a signed first edition of For Whom the Bell Tolls, which, Brown says, “Hemingway signed in Cuba,” and a book of Petrarch poetry that dates to 1515.

Of his role at Caveat Emptor, Brown says, “It’s a mission. I see myself as curator of the store. If books disappear, what we value as a society and as a culture will disappear, too.”

ReBoot: The Mill’s Program for Once-Incarcerated Entrepreneurs

by Greg Siering Starting a business can be a challenging endeavor for anyone, but for formerly incarcerated individuals, it can be an even steeper climb. Thanks to the ReBoot program at The Mill, Bloomington’s center for coworking and entrepreneurship, prospective entrepreneurs working to transition back into the community are getting support to build both life skills and their business.

ReBoot is a six-week educational program that helps formerly incarcerated entrepreneurs refine their business ideas and learn how to pitch their plans to potential investors. The first ReBoot class culminated in April with an online pitch competition, with the winner receiving $2,500 in seed money, and all participants receiving memberships at The Mill, where they can attend other business development programming and connect to a network of mentors and potential investors.

ReBoot is a perfect fit for The Mill, says Andy Lehman, head of accelerator programming, because it allows the center to become more inclusive and supportive of entrepreneurship across the community.

Lehman says, “I’d really like to expand our work out to more underserved populations, being more intentional about opening the door wider.”

and Courage to Change Sober Living, which offers low-barrier housing and services to individuals in recovery. These groups helped with outreach to the re-entry community and with the selection of participants. Lehman notes that selecting the right participants is key—individuals ready for growth, but with enough job and housing stability that the pressures of entrepreneurship would help lift them up, not cause a backslide.

The first ReBoot pitch competition winner, Danielle Morris, 27, demonstrated remarkable growth, Lehman says.

“ReBoot helped me build so much confidence in myself that I was lacking,” Morris says, pointing out that the program helped her move from self-doubt to believing she had something to offer.

Morris’ fledgling business, Heroine Studios, operates on a buy-one-give-one model, where each photography session purchased by the general public funds another for a woman in recovery. Morris recognizes the roles self-image, confidence, and trust play in recovery, and she offers photo sessions as a way of helping women develop the self-esteem needed to persevere. “And it keeps me well, too,” she adds, explaining that it keeps her connected and helps her see her own value.

Their contributions have helped to define America and to some extent the world at large. In this issue, we celebrate 50 of those alumni who found fame in their chosen fields.

As you might expect, many are musicians, actors, writers, and athletes. But there are also entrepreneurs, CEOs, journalists, a presidential candidate, a Supreme Court justice, a CIA chief, a foreign president, a couple of vice presidents, and even a famous herpetologist.

Whatever your age and interests, you will likely know many of these alumni—but probably not all.

Trigger Alpert

David Anspaugh

Jazz bassist Herman “Trigger” Alpert was born in 1916 in Indianapolis and studied music at IU in the 1930s. Asked to join the Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1940, he appeared with the band in the film Sun Valley Serenade the next year. He played with Miller until being drafted in 1941. When Miller volunteered in 1942, he selected Alpert as a member of his all-star Army Air Force Band. The two remained friends until Miller’s death in 1944.

Alpert went on to work with Tex Beneke, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Woody Herman, and others. In 1956, he recorded his only album as a leader: Trigger Happy! He left the music business in 1970. Alpert died in 2013 at the age of 97. —C.S.

Born and raised in Decatur, Indiana, David Anspaugh studied secondary education at IU, and shot 16 mm films of Vietnam War protests, live music, and sporting events in his free time.

He later attended film school at the University of Southern California and began a career producing and directing several of the 1980s’ most illustrious television shows, including Hill Street Blues (for which he won two Primetime Emmy Awards), St. Elsewhere, and Miami Vice.

His big screen directing debut was the film Hoosiers (written by his closest friend at IU, Angelo Pizzo—see Page 88.), followed by several others, including Rudy and Moonlight and Valentino.

Anspaugh moved back to Bloomington in 2014, where he has taught at IU and directed and acted in plays with the Bloomington Playwrights Project. —T.Z.T.

Kenny Aronoff

Howard Ashman

While he is best known for the 17 years he spent as the concert and studio drummer for John Mellencamp, Kenny Aronoff has shared the stage with a huge roster of pop and rock icons, including Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty, and Johnny Cash.

Born and raised in Massachusetts, Aronoff came to IU to study classical music in the mid-1970s, then turned his focus toward jazz and fusion for a handful of years before auditioning for Mellencamp.

In addition to playing and recording, Aronoff taught percussion at the IU School of Music as an associate professor in the 1990s.

Now 68, he continues to perform as a musician and motivational speaker. He recently released an autobiography called Sex, Drums, Rock ‘n’ Roll. —T.Z.T.

Lyricist, writer, director, and producer Howard Ashman earned an M.F.A. from IU in 1974. One of his early theater collaborations with lifelong professional partner Alan Menken was 1982’s Little Shop of Horrors, which Ashman later turned into a screenplay.

Ashman and Menken were pivotal in the “Disney Renaissance” era, beginning with The Little Mermaid in 1989 and continuing with Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. Among their many awards, they earned Oscars for Best Original Song in 1986 (Little Shop of Horrors), 1989 (The Little Mermaid), and 1991 (Beauty and the Beast).

Returning to IU in 1987 to present a Collins Lecture, Ashman attended an IU Theatre performance of Little Shop of Horrors. IU was the first university granted permission to stage the musical, thanks to Ashman.

Ashman died of complications from AIDS in 1991, at age 40, shortly before the release of Beauty and the Beast.

David Baker Jazz Educator

Born in Indianapolis, jazz musician David Baker earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from IU in 1953 and a master’s degree the following year. Originally a trombonist, he switched to the cello after sustaining jaw injuries in a car accident.

An IU School of Music faculty member beginning in 1966, Baker founded IU’s jazz studies program in 1968, one of the first at an American university. He served as its chair until 2013.

Baker’s body of work includes more than 65 recordings, 70 books, and 400 articles. Among his many accolades, Baker was named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2000 and a Living Jazz Legend by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2007.

He died in 2016 at the age of 84.

Jonathan Banks Actor

Brady Barr Herpetologist

Of the more than 100 wildlife documentaries he has hosted for National Geographic television, Brady Barr is best known for his seven-season stint hosting Dangerous Encounters with Brady Barr.

Barr grew up in Bloomington and graduated from Bloomington High School South. He earned a B.S. in education at IU in 1987, then taught high school science in Indianapolis before receiving a master’s degree in 1994 and a Ph.D. in biology in 1997 from University of Miami.

Barr was the first known herpetologist—someone who studies reptiles and amphibians—to have captured, studied, and released all 23 extant species of crocodilians in his career. He authored a children’s book about crocodiles and citizen science, appeared numerous times on The Tonight Show, and in 2017 received the IU School of Education Distinguished Alumni Award. —R.M.

Jonathan Banks, best known for portraying Mike Ehrmantraut on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, has strong ties to IU. His grandfather was a Monroe County farmer and stonecutter who helped lay the foundation for Franklin Hall, and his mother and daughters all earned IU degrees. Banks studied theater at IU in the 1960s, appearing in The Threepenny Opera with future Academy Award winner Kevin Kline.

With more than 50 movies and 70 television shows to his credit, Banks has six Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Wiseguy (1989), Breaking Bad (2013), and Better Call Saul (2015–17 and 2019).

He is the only actor with nominations in this category for three different shows, two of which are for the same character.

Joshua Bell Violinist

Bloomington native Joshua Bell is a world-renowned violinist who debuted at Carnegie Hall at age 17. A Bloomington High School North graduate, Bell got his start training under violinists at the IU School of Music, where he received an artist diploma in violin performance in 1989.

Bell, 53, has served in multiple professorships, including as a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and was artistic partner of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra from 2004–2007. He received the Indiana Governor’s Award and was named an Indiana Living Legend.

Bell plays the Gibson ex Huberman Stradivarius violin, which was crafted in 1713 and purchased by Bell for nearly $4 million. The violin, which has twice been stolen from previous owners, is the subject of a documentary film called The Return of the Violin (2013). —S.B. Photo by Chris Lee

Hall of Fame Basketball Star

Angela Brown Opera Star

North Carolina native Walt Bellamy says he chose to play basketball at IU because “it was the closest school to the South that would accept African Americans.” A 1961 graduate, he is considered one of the greatest basketball players in school history.

In 70 games for the Hoosiers, Bellamy tallied 1,087 rebounds (a school record), averaged 20.6 points per game, and shot 51.7% from the floor. His 33 rebounds in one contest—his final college game against Michigan—still stands as both a school and Big Ten record. He became the first Hoosier ever taken No. 1 in the NBA draft, and was the first Hoosier named NBA Rookie of the Year in 1962.

A four-time NBA All-Star, Bellamy played for six teams in his 14-year professional career, averaging 21.7 points and 13.7 rebounds per game, and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He died November 2, 2013, at the age of 74.

Angela Brown journeyed through teenage soul bands, musical theater performances, and a brief stint as a singing waitress before the fates turned her talents toward opera.

She studied with voice teacher Virginia Zeani in graduate school at the IU School of Music and won the National Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions in 1997, launching her career.

Her turn as the lead in Verdi’s Aida at the Metropolitan Opera in 2005 brought her international acclaim, and soon she was performing on historic opera stages around the world. She founded Morning Brown Inc., a nonprofit designed to “introduce and expose economically and ethnically diverse and multigenerational audiences to opera and classical music”—a mission that Brown regularly brings to life with her own iconoclastic stage show, titled Opera from a Sistah’s Point of View. —T.Z.T. Joe Buck

Meg Cabot

Joe Buck’s life as a student at IU was preempted by his career in sportscasting. He began broadcasting on local St. Louis television and radio stations as a caller for minor and major league baseball games around the time he turned 20, sometimes filling in for his veteran sportscaster father, Jack.

At age 25, Buck was hired by Fox Sports, where he was the youngest announcer ever to call NFL games and the World Series on a national network. He is now Fox’s lead play-by-play announcer for NFL and MLB games, and has won seven Sports Emmy Awards.

Buck was chosen as one of the final guest hosts of Season 37 of Jeopardy! as the game show continues to seek a successor to long-time host Alex Trebek.

Meg Cabot has written more than 50 teen, young adult, and adult novels, primarily in the fiction and fantasy genres.

Cabot’s most well-known series is The Princess Diaries, which was adapted into the 2001 film of the same name starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews. The Princess Diaries was published in more than 40 countries and spent 38 total weeks on The New York Times Children’s Best-Seller List.

A Bloomington native, Cabot graduated from Indiana University in 1991 with a degree in studio arts. She married writer and poet Benjamin Egnaz on April Fool’s Day in 1993.

Cabot and Egnaz split their time between Bloomington; Key West, Florida; and New York.

Paul Caine, who graduated from IU in 1986 with a degree in telecommunications, has served in leadership positions at USA Today, Time Inc. and WestwoodOne. Caine served as the youngest salesperson at USA Today before being recruited by Time Inc. to join the sales team of People magazine. At Time, Caine helped launch Teen People magazine, and served as publisher of Entertainment Weekly and People before being named executive vice president, chief revenue officer, and group president of Time Inc. After a stint as CEO of radio syndication company Dial Global—which Caine renamed WestwoodOne—Caine joined Bloomberg Media as chief revenue officer before leaving to serve as chairman of the board of both Telaria Inc., a video advertising firm, and global marketing agency Engine Group. —S.B.

Anyone who has tapped out the piano duet “Heart and Soul” is familiar with Hoagy Carmichael, who composed the music in 1938.

His song “Stardust,” which was written in Bloomington, is one of the most-recorded songs in the world and is part of the Great American Songbook.

From the 1920s to the 1950s, Carmichael wrote more than 50 hit songs and appeared in a number of movies, often as a piano-playing character.

Born in Bloomington in 1899, Carmichael earned a bachelor’s degree (1925) and a law degree (1926) from IU. In 1971, Carmichael was one of the first 10 inductees into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. When the internet was ascending from a niche service to a household utility, John T. Chambers headed up software company Cisco Systems as its executive chairman and CEO. He is credited with steering the company into becoming a global technological giant, growing annual revenues from $70 million to $40 billion over his 20 years at the company (1995–2015).

Chambers’ predilection for the business of technology began right after he earned his M.B.A in finance and management from the IU School of Business in 1975. He began his career as a computer salesman at IBM before moving on to Wang Computers, where he became vice president of U.S. operations.

He now serves as chairman emeritus of Cisco Systems and is a member of the board of directors of Quantum Metric, a Colorado-based digital development company.

Hammond, Indiana-born Bob Chapek grew up vacationing at Disney World. Just last year, he became the CEO of the entire Disney mass media and entertainment conglomerate, perhaps an unexpected destiny for a man who, in the late 1970s, focused on microbiology as an undergraduate at IU. He later earned his M.B.A. from Michigan State University, then worked for the H.J. Heinz Company and advertising firm J. Walter Thompson before joining Disney as the Buena Vista Home Entertainment division’s marketing director in 1993.

Over the last three decades, Hammond headed up Disney’s consumer products, then parks and resorts—overseeing their largest expansion in the company’s history—before he became CEO, right at the dawn of the COVID-19 pandemic. —T.Z.T.

Suzanne Collins is the author of The New York Times Best-Selling The Hunger Games trilogy and its recently released prequel, Songbirds and Snakes. Together, the books have sold more than 100 million copies worldwide.

A 1985 IU graduate with a double major in telecommunications and theater, Collins got her start writing for children’s television.

She worked on several Nickelodeon shows, including the Emmynominated Clarissa Explains It All and The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo. The first book in her first young adult series, The Underland Chronicles (also a NYT Best Seller), was released in 2003.

Laverne Cox is probably most recognized for her role as Sophia Burset on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black. In 2014, that character was named “the most dynamic transgender character in history” by Time magazine.

Cox is the first transgender woman to star in a mainstream TV drama and the first to receive a Primetime Emmy nomination.

In 2014 she was included in the annual Root 100, a list that honors Black “leaders, innovators, and culture shapers” age 45 and younger. In 2018 she received the Claire Skiffington Vanguard Award from the Transgender Law Center for her work for the transgender community.

Cox, 49, attended IU for two years before transferring to Marymount Manhattan College, where she graduated with a B.F.A. in dance. —C.S.

Mark Cuban Entrepreneur

Entrepreneur extraordinaire Mark Cuban, 63, is worth more than $4 billion, placing him 655th on Forbes magazine’s 2021 World’s Billionaires List. A Pittsburgh native, Cuban worked his way through college by providing disco lessons, among other endeavors, and graduated from the IU School of Business in 1981 with a B.S. in marketing.

In 1995, Cuban and fellow IU alum Todd Wagner started broadcast.com, then sold it four years later to Yahoo for $5.7 billion. Cuban now owns the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and is a “shark” investor on the reality television show Shark Tank. He also owns film distributor Magnolia Pictures, started the Fallen Patriot Fund, and has written two books, among countless other endeavors.

Dick Enberg Sportscaster

Janie Fricke Singer

Dick Enberg earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in health and physical education at IU in the early 1960s, but a class in sports broadcasting, followed by announcing gigs for the Little 500 bicycle race and Hoosier basketball and football, ended up defining his career.

Enberg worked as a sportscaster for six decades, beginning on a local Los Angeles station, then gradually stepping up to NBC Sports, CBS Sports, and ESPN before settling back into play-by-play broadcasting for the San Diego Padres.

A prosaic broadcaster who waxed poetic in television essays in his later years, his signature line was “Oh, my!”— also the title of his 2004 biography. He died in 2017 at age 82. —T.Z.T.

Born in South Whitley, Indiana, singer Janie Fricke is a 1972 graduate of IU, where she was a member of the Singing Hoosiers.

She got her professional start singing commercial jingles, most notably for Coca-Cola and Red Lobster (“Red Lobster, for the seafood lover in you.”).

Moving to Nashville, Tennessee, Fricke joined the Lea Jane Singers, a vocal ensemble that backed up some of the biggest names in country music. By age 30, she was one of Nashville’s most soughtafter backup singers. By the 1980s, she was dominating the charts and winning awards, such as her back-to-back Female Vocalist of the Year wins from the Country Music Association in 1982 and 1983. Fricke is still active in the music industry and lives with her family in Texas.

Robert Gates

CIA Chief & Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, former head of the Central Intelligence Agency, grew up in Kansas and attended the College of William & Mary. He was recruited by the CIA while earning his master’s in history at IU–Bloomington and would come to lead the organization 25 years later, from 1991–1993.

When Gates left the CIA, he moved into academia, lecturing at multiple universities and becoming the 22nd president of Texas A&M University in 1999. President George W. Bush attempted to bring Gates into his administration several times, ultimately succeeding in 2006, when Gates became the Secretary of Defense. President Barack Obama kept him in the position and awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom when he retired in 2011.

He has since served as the chancellor of William & Mary, as well as president of the Boy Scouts of America, which lifted its ban on gay scout leaders at his urging. —T.Z.T.

Jamie Hyneman, who grew up in Columbus, Indiana, earned a degree in Russian language and linguistics from IU in 1981. He’s worked as a linguist, boat captain, wilderness survival expert, certified dive master, chef, and animal wrangler, among other things, but found his niche in the special effects industry.

He was co-host of the Discovery Channel’s MythBusters from 2003 to 2018 and owns the special effects company MF Industries, where MythBusters was filmed.

Hyneman, 64, received the IU College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award in 2012, gave the commencement speech in 2016, and received the Bicentennial Medal in 2020. As the COVID-19 global pandemic emerged, Hyneman partnered with the IU School of Public Health to help engineer improved PPE for health care workers. —C.S.

In 1962, while he was still in high school in Memphis, Tennessee, Booker T. Jones and his band, Booker T. and the MGs, had a Billboard No. 1 hit with “Green Onions,” which Booker co-wrote.

Given the band’s success, when Jones chose to attend college to study music, many in the industry were surprised.

While at IU, Jones made the deans’ list, pledged Kappa Alpha Psi, and played trombone in the symphony orchestra and the Marching Hundred. He returned to Memphis on weekends to record and play with the MGs. He graduated from the IU School of Music in 1967.

Among his many honors, Jones was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992—the only IU alum to achieve that honor— and was awarded a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement in 2007. He received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from IU in 2012 and the Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 2013.—C.S.

Michael D. Higgins, 80, has served as the president of Ireland since November 2011. He was the first in his family to attend college, studying in Ireland and the United Kingdom before coming to Bloomington to earn a master’s in sociology in 1967.

A fierce proponent of Irish culture, Higgins served as the country’s first minister for arts, culture, and the Gaeltacht (areas where the Irish language is still spoken). A renowned intellectual, he has published several collections of poetry.

His more artistic side may have been on display while he was an IU student. In the runup to the 2011 elections, then-candidate Higgins confirmed to the Irish Independent newspaper that he smoked marijuana while he was in Bloomington in the ’60s—and that he did, indeed, inhale. —C.S.

Oscar–Winning Actor

The winner of two gold medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Lilly King may have earned one or two more in the Tokyo games by the time this story is published.

The Evansville-born athlete swam competitively in high school and joined the swimming and diving team at IU the same year she qualified for the Olympic team.

As a Hoosier, she won the NCAA Women’s Division I Swimming and Diving Championship competitions for the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke all four years—the second woman in history to do so.

She currently holds the world record for the 100-meter breaststroke and swims for the Cali Condors, which is part of the professional International Swimming League that was founded in 2019.

A new aquatic center in her hometown—set to open this fall— will be named in her honor. —T.Z.T.

Actor Kevin Kline has won three Tony Awards for his work on Broadway and a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for A Fish Called Wanda.

The St. Louis native came to IU to study music, but after two years switched to theater. In an interview, Kline says once he found the stage, he could barely make it to class because all he wanted to do was act. He did manage to graduate, in 1970.

His Hoosier connection has been of some use. Kline portrayed a fictional high school teacher from Indiana in the 1997 film In & Out, and Hoosier songwriter Cole Porter in 2004’s De-Lovely. Ted Kluszewski

When travel restrictions forced the Cincinnati Reds to find a new spring training location during World War II, they discovered more than just Indiana University—they found Ted Kluszewski.

“Big Klu” was recruited to play football at IU, but also played baseball.

A Cincinnati groundskeeper noticed he was hitting baseballs in excess of 500 feet and the team offered him a $15,000 contract.

Kluszewski is considered one of the strongest baseball players ever.

In his career, he was a four-time National League All Star, led the league in fielding average five straight years, topped the NL in home runs and RBIs in 1954, and in 1955 lead the league in hits.

In 1957, the Reds traded Kluszewski to Pittsburgh, who later traded him to the Chicago White Sox for their World Series–winning 1959 season. He died in 1988 at the age of 64.

New York Times Best–Selling author and Bloomington native Michael Koryta was a 20-year-old IU student when the first book in his Lincoln Perry mystery series was published in 2004.

Several of Koryta’s novels have been optioned for films over the years, but the first one hit the big screen in 2021—Those Who Wish Me Dead, starring Angelina Jolie.

When the novel was published in 2014, it was named that summer’s best thriller by both Amazon and Entertainment Weekly and selected as one of 2014’s best books by more than 10 publications.

Now, Koryta has published 15 crime novels under his own name and one supernatural thriller, The Chill, published as Scott Carson.

Ross Lockridge Jr. Author

Ross Lockridge Jr. is the author of Raintree County, a 1,060-page epic many have called The Great American Novel. Graduating from IU in 1935 with a 4.33 grade point average—the highest GPA ever accumulated at the university— Lockridge entered a doctoral program at Harvard in 1940, announcing he would write a dissertation on Walt Whitman. In reality, he began writing Raintree County.

In 1946, he carried the 20-pound manuscript to publisher Houghton Mifflin in a suitcase. Within five weeks the novel was excerpted in Life magazine, won an enormous monetary prize and movie contract from MGM Studios, and was the Main Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club. But the publisher, the studio, and the book club wanted significant cuts and revisions.

Lockridge, already depressed, found the situation unbearable. The day before his novel was announced as the No. 1 national bestseller, he took his own life.

Grammy Award–winning opera singer and recitalist Sylvia McNair has performed in the great concert halls of Europe and America, with the world’s most famous conductors, before the U.S. Supreme Court, and at the 80th birthday celebration of Pope John Paul II. McNair, who received a Master of Music degree with distinction from the Indiana University School of Music in 1983, had her operatic debut as Sandrina in L’infedeltà delusa in 1982.

A soprano, she went on to enjoy a prolific opera career during which she recorded more than 70 albums. For years, she performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, as well as at the Vienna State Opera and the San Francisco Opera, among others.

For a time, McNair served on the IU Jacobs School of Music voice faculty.

She currently resides in Bloomington and volunteers for several charitable organizations. —S.B.

MacArthur ‘Genius’ Musician A groundbreaking virtuoso of the double bass, Edgar Meyer first learned to play from his father— the string orchestra director for the public schools in Oak Ridge, Tennessee—and went on to study with Stuart Sankey at the IU School of Music.

He has since performed and recorded extensively in the rarefied realm of solo classical bassists and was a member of the progressive bluegrass supergroup Strength in Numbers with Béla Fleck, Sam Bush, Mark O’Connor, and Jerry Douglas.

He has also composed music alone and collaboratively that crisscrossed through genres of bluegrass, jazz, and classical, which have earned him a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship and five Grammy Awards.

In 2020, he collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, and Chris Thile for the second time on an album called Not Our First Goat Rodeo. —T.Z.T. 86

Sherman Minton

Sherman Minton, a one-term Democratic U.S. senator born in Georgetown, Indiana, is the last member of Congress to have been appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

When Minton attended IU in the early 1900s, he was in good company.

Among his friends were future governor of Indiana Paul V. McNutt and future presidential candidate Wendell L. Willkie.

Minton graduated from IU in 1913 and earned a law degree in 1915.

From 1935 to 1941, he served in the U.S. Senate, where he befriended Harry Truman. In 1949, Truman had an opportunity to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court. He nominated Minton.

Serving just seven years on the court, Minton was key in at least one major ruling—Brown v. Board of Education. He died in 1965. —C.S.

Ryan Murphy, best known for creating and producing popular television series such as Nip/Tuck (2003–10), Glee (2009–15), and American Horror Story (2011–present), studied journalism at IU in the mid1980s. While a student, he was a member of the Singing Hoosiers and interned in the style section at The Washington Post. He went on to work as a journalist before beginning scriptwriting in the late 1990s. He started his career in television with the teen comedy Popular, which debuted on The WB in 1999.

Murphy has received six Primetime Emmy Awards and has been called “the most powerful man” in modern television.

He recently signed the largest developmental deal in television history with Netflix, to the tune of $300 million. —C.S.

Former Treasury Secretary Paul H. O’Neill was the son of an Army sergeant who grew up on military bases all over the United States. He finished high school in Anchorage, Alaska, and college at California State University, Fresno, before earning his master’s in public administration from IU. O’Neill began his public service career at the Veterans Administration, followed by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, where he later became deputy director. He was appointed Secretary of the Treasury by President George W. Bush in 2001.

The tensions and conflicts that arose when he held that position—particularly regarding his perspective on the war on Iraq—were illuminated in the 2004 book The Price of Loyalty by Ron Suskind.

A year before O’Neill died in 2020 at age 84, IU renamed its School of Public and Environmental Affairs in his honor. —T.Z.T.

Born in Indianapolis in 1950, awardwinning journalist Jane Pauley took just one journalism class before graduating with a B.A. in political science from IU in 1972.

She began her career at WISH-TV in Indianapolis before moving to Chicago to become the first female co-anchor of a major evening newscast. Just 10 months later she was chosen to replace Barbara Walters on the Today show, beginning a long network television news career.

Pauley made history again when, in 2016, she replaced Charles Osgood as the host of CBS Sunday Morning, making her the only female anchor of a Sunday morning news program.

An author, actress, and mental health advocate, Pauley is married to cartoonist Garry Trudeau, creator of the comic strip Doonesbury.

Career politician Mike Pence has represented Indiana’s 9th Congressional District in the U.S. Congress (2001–2013), served as Indiana governor (2013–2017), and was U.S. vice president under Donald Trump (2017–2021). A 1986 graduate of the Robert H. McKinney School of Law at IUPUI, the Columbus, Indiana, native has drawn controversy throughout his career.

In 1990, Pence admitted to using campaign funds from a failed bid for Congress to pay personal expenses, including his mortgage, groceries, and his wife’s car payments. As governor, he signed bills further restricting abortions and permitting certain types of discrimination on religious grounds.

Pence, an evangelical Christian, remained ever loyal to Trump, who placed him in charge of the nation’s pandemic response. After he downplayed its severity, more than 400,000 people died on his watch.

Bloomington-bred from age 3 until he graduated from IU as a political science major, Angelo Pizzo then enrolled in the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts and began his career in the film and television industry.

Best known for authoring the screenplay for the film Hoosiers, which featured characters inspired by tiny Milan High School’s 1954 state championship team, Pizzo was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and given the “Sagamore of the Wabash” award—Indiana’s highest civilian honor for service to the state—which he shared with the film’s director, David Anspaugh (see Page 78).

Pizzo and Anspaugh, close friends from their IU days, also collaborated on Rudy, another major player in the lexicon of inspirational sports films.

Pizzo, who returned to Bloomington in 2005, has continued to write screenplays and serves on the board of the Heartland Film Festival. —T.Z.T.

Ernie Pyle

Dan Quayle

A pioneer of human-interest journalism, Ernie Pyle was renowned for telling straightforward, personal stories about people he met on his travels, and, most famously, on the front lines of World War II. Pyle hailed from Dana, Indiana, and was already interested in becoming a journalist when he arrived at IU in 1919. He left school just shy of graduating, landing a reporting job in La Porte Indiana, and at the Washington Daily News in D.C. soon after, where he worked as a reporter and aviation columnist.

In the 1930s, he traveled throughout North and South America with his wife, Jerry, writing the stories of individual experiences during the Great Depression. His frank conversations with infantrymen as a war correspondent won him a Pulitzer Prize, but the work also ultimately claimed his life—he was killed while covering the invasion of Okinawa, Japan, in 1945. —T.Z.T.

James Danforth Quayle, grandson of wealthy newspaper magnate Eugene C. Pulliam, chose politics over journalism and ascended to become the nation’s 44th vice president.

A native of Huntington, Indiana, Quayle got his B.A. from DePauw University in 1969. Six days before graduating and becoming eligible for the draft, he joined the Indiana National Guard.

He earned a J.D. from the IU School of Law–Indianapolis in 1974 while still in the guard and despite not having met the school’s admission standards.

Quayle was elected to Congress in 1976 and to the U.S. Senate in 1980. In 1988, he was chosen as the vice-presidential running mate to George H.W. Bush and came under fire for his lack of political acumen, his military service, and a controversial relationship with Paula Parkinson, a D.C. lobbyist and subject of a 1980 Playboy pictorial.

Quayle is also famous for not knowing how to spell “potato.” —R.M.

Will Shortz Puzzlemaster

Will Shortz is the only known person to hold a degree in enigmatology—the study of puzzles—which he created through Indiana University’s Individualized Major Program in 1974.

Shortz, who has authored or edited more than 100 books, has been puzzle editor for The New York Times since 1993. He founded the World Puzzle Championship in 1992, is a director of the U.S. Puzzle Team, and hosts the Sunday Puzzle cooperative game on NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday. Shortz also possesses the world’s largest private collection of puzzle books and magazines, which is comprised of more than 20,000 publications dating back to 1545.

Then-aspiring actor Ranveer Singh Bhavnani was born and raised in Mumbai, India, and came to the United States to attend IU, where he focused on creative writing and minored in theater. When he returned to India, he worked as an advertising copywriter and auditioned for Hindi films.

In 2010, he landed the lead role in a romantic comedy called Band Baaja Baarat, which led to a series of other Bollywood castings that cemented his celebrity. He is now one of the toppaid and most critically acclaimed actors in India.

He has earned five Filmfare Awards (the Hindi film industry’s most prominent honors), as well as International Indian Film Academy awards, Star Screen awards, and several others. —T.Z.T.

Mark Spitz was already a twotime Olympic gold medalist and held numerous world swimming records when he decided to attend Indiana University in 1969 and train with legendary swim coach Doc Counsilman. Spitz later described the step as “the biggest decision of my life [and] the best.”

As a Hoosier, Spitz won eight individual NCAA titles, and in 1971 was named the top amateur athlete in the United States. The following year, he became a household name when he won seven gold medals at the Munich Olympics, setting a new world record in each event.

Sage Steele Sportscaster

Sage Steele’s Bachelor of Science degree in sports communication, which she earned from IU in 1995, has served her well. Currently the co-anchor of ESPN’s noon broadcast of SportsCenter, Steele began her sports reporting career on local television stations in South Bend and Indianapolis.

Later, turns at stations in Florida and Maryland steered her into her first job with the national sports network in 2007. In addition to being an anchor of various editions of ESPN’s signature program, she has been the host of the Scripps National Spelling Bee and a featured co-host on ABC’s The View.

Born into a U.S. Army family in Panama, Steele grew up on military bases around the world, ending up in Carmel, Indiana, for her last two years of high school.

She gave IU’s undergraduate commencement address in 2015.

A decade later, Tan left her day job in marketing to act full time, starring in stage productions as well as a variety of TV sitcoms and dramas in Singapore and Malaysia.

The 58-year-old actor recently developed a broader international profile after starring as the mother of the protagonist in the film Crazy Rich Asians, and Empress Dowager in the Netflix series Marco Polo.

She is currently appearing in Fung Fu, a reimagining of the 1970s TV series that premiered on The CW this year. —T.Z.T.

The first Black player to be drafted by a National Football League team, George Taliaferro was the star player of IU’s only undefeated Big Ten Championship season in 1945.

The halfback, quarterback, and punter faced the bigotry of a segregated IU campus and town where he was unable to live in the dorms, swim in the IU pool, or eat alongside his teammates. With the help of IU President Herman B Wells, Taliaferro helped desegregate the campus and the town.

Taliaferro played for five NFL teams over the next six years, eventually turning back to education and earning his master’s degree in social work from Howard University. After establishing himself as an educator, he returned to IU as a professor and special assistant to the president, while his wife, Viola (Vi), attended law school.

They raised four children.

Taliaferro founded Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Indiana, and Vi became a Monroe Circuit Court judge. He died in 2018. A bronze statue of Taliaferro now stands in a plaza bearing his name at Memorial Stadium, dedicated in 2019.

Isiah Thomas

Jimmy Wales

Identified as a basketball prodigy during his early childhood on Chicago’s West Side, Isiah Thomas’ career spiked when he joined coach Bob Knight’s Hoosiers in 1979 and was the team’s captain as they won the 1981 NCAA Championship.

Thomas had enormous success as a professional player, including as point guard for the Detroit Pistons for 13 years, where he set new records for points, assists, steals, and games played for the team, and was named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history.

After retiring from playing, Thomas took up residence courtside with much less success, including controversial turns coaching the Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks, and Florida International University.

He also took up the business end as part owner of the Toronto Raptors and owner of the Continental Basketball Association before it went bankrupt and folded. He has been a broadcast game analyst on NBC and NBA TV. —T.Z.T.

Though he may not have graduated from IU, Wikipedia co-founder and former financial trader Jimmy Wales is an IU alum. Born in Huntsville, Alabama, Wales graduated at 16 from Randolph School, a university prep school, then attended Auburn University where he received his bachelor’s degree in finance in 1986.

After earning a master’s degree from the University of Alabama, Wales came to IU to begin a doctoral program in finance at the School of Business, but left without completing his dissertation. Sources say he left due to “boredom.”

In January 2001, Wales helped launch Wikipedia, a free opencontent encyclopedia. Wales serves as Wikipedia CEO and, in 2006, was named one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People.” —C.S.

By the time she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from IU–East in 2015, Venus Williams had two decades of a record-smashing, historic career in women’s tennis under her belt.

A professional player since the age of 14, she earned her first two Olympic gold medals at age 20 in 2000—one solo and the other playing doubles alongside younger sister, Serena. (The duo won golds again in 2008 and 2012.)

Now 41, she has won multiple Grand Slam titles both alone and with her sister, earning more than $42 million in career prize money— the second highest amount in history, next to Serena.

Williams was the first player to take advantage of an agreement between the Women’s Tennis Benefits Association and IU–East, which allows players to work on their degrees online. —T.Z.T.

Born in Elwood, Indiana, in 1892, Wendell Willkie attended IU and graduated from the School of Law in 1916. He practiced law with his father before entering WWI in 1917. After the war, he practiced corporate law.

Willkie earned his campaign moniker “Dark Horse” when, at the 1940 Republican National Convention, he defeated wellknown political figures such as Thomas E. Dewey and Sen. Robert A. Taft on the sixth ballot. He ran against third-term candidate Franklin Delano Roosevelt in that year’s general election.

Of course, he lost, winning only 10 states and 82 electoral votes. But he received more than 22 million ballots, the largest by a Republican at that time. He subsequently became known for his concept of international cooperation, outlined in his bestselling book, One World.

Emily Harris was a founding member of the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), the left-wing terrorist group best known for the kidnapping of newspaper heiress Patty Hearst.

Harris became involved with the SLA after moving from Bloomington to Berkeley, California, with her husband, Bill Harris, and their friends Gary Atwood and Angela (DeAngelis) Atwood, also IU alumni.

All four alums were members of the organization.

As a member of the SLA, Harris was associated with the assassination of California superintendent Marcus Foster in 1973 and the 1975 robbery of Crocker National Bank in Carmichael, California, among other crimes.

She served a total of 16 years in prison, eight of them for the murder of Myrna Opsahl, who was fatally shot during the bank robbery.

Jim Jones

In 2000, Eric Rosser, also known as Doc Rosser, became the first child sex crimes fugitive on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list for producing and distributing child pornography. His victims were in Bloomington, where he lived until the early 1990s, and in Thailand, where he had moved and was teaching piano.

Rosser, a keyboardist for John Mellencamp for two years beginning in 1979, was sentenced to more than 16 years in prison for his crimes. He was released in January 2017 but sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison in 2020 after he was discovered watching child pornography on public transportation in Montana in July 2017—only six months after he had been released.

Rosser earned a master’s degree from the IU Music School in 1979.

Possession of Child Pornography

Jim Jones, infamous cult leader of the Peoples Temple, is known for the mass murder-suicide of 918 commune members in 1978 via cyanide-laced Flavor Aid. More than 300 of the victims were children.

Jones is also responsible for the deaths of five others, including Congressman Leo Ryan, who visited Jones’ commune, Jonestown, to verify the safety of its residents on the day of the mass murder.

Ryan and four members of his entourage were killed by gunfire from Jones’ armed guards at an airstrip in Guyana, South America, where Jonestown was located.

Jones, who attended IU for two years before finishing his degree at Butler University, was killed by a gunshot to the head that same day, which was found to be consistent with suicide.

Jared Fogle is a former spokesman for the Subway restaurant chain who attributed his weight loss to eating sandwiches at the former Subway location on Atwater Avenue. The 2000 IU grad was arrested in 2015 for possession of child pornography and was sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison.

Fogle has also been accused of embezzlement through the Jared Foundation, a nonprofit organization he founded to combat childhood obesity. The organization was found to have never issued grants or funds to further its mission.

In April 2015, the director of the foundation, Russell Taylor, was arrested in Indianapolis for possession of child pornography and child exploitation. The case against Taylor, who was sentenced to 27 years in federal prison, is what ultimately led to Fogle’s arrest.

When Mike Woodson was announced as the next IU men’s basketball coach, the former Hoosier star promised to bring back the storied program’s winning tradition. He should know how, having played under legendary coach Bob Knight from 1976–1980 followed by a successful career both playing and, since 1996, coaching in the NBA. He is the fifth coach to lead the Hoosiers since Knight was fired in 2000, and the hopes for a sixth NCAA Championship banner weigh heavy on his shoulders.

BLOOM: Michael Cassady, owner of The Uptown Cafe, says that you’re there frequently and that unlike some past coaches, you don’t eat in the private dining room—that you’re approachable, friendly, that people talk to you, you talk to them. Are you always like that?

WOODSON : I’ve always been that way.

I was that way as a player and as a coach.

I think it’s because I had a pretty cool upbringing. Even though I lost my parents at an early age, they left an imprint. And playing for [Broad Ripple High School coach] Bill Smith, coming to IU—they all set the tone in terms of my development as a basketball player and as a man.

In high school and in college, people were so supportive of me that I couldn’t help but be open and supportive and be kind to people because that’s what it’s all about. And for me to come back here, and people welcomed me back like they did. My walk around campus was pretty good, man. Everybody wants to know, “How are we going to be this year?

How’s the team looking?” And all I can tell them is, man, I’m going to do everything possible to put this team back on top, and that’s why I came back here.

BLOOM: Your first big win was convincing Trayce Jackson-Davis to return when he could have gone to the NBA. How hard was it and how important was it to have him back on the team?

WOODSON: It was huge. He’s our best player. When I took over, I gave this speech to a group of players who didn’t know who Mike Woodson was, and when I asked those guys who would stay, six of the probably best players didn’t raise their hands. That was tough. So, we evaluated the situation and came up with a game plan that was to go after the best player and try to keep him on board, and that’s what I did.

I sat down with Trayce and his parents and I had put together a game tape that probably wasn’t real pleasant for him because there was nothing positive on it. It showed him all the things that I thought he could do better instead

of the things he was doing. It took him a while to see it. About halfway through the tape, he mentioned that there was nothing good on it.

After this film session he and his dad needed a chance to talk, and after they spoke, he came back and said he was on board and wanted to stay. So that was the starting point of trying to build our team and get to where we are right now as we speak.

BLOOM: It seems that what Jackson-Davis needs to do is be able to score away from the basket. He tried very few shots away and mostly wasn’t successful. Is that what you think he needs to work on most importantly?

WOODSON: I think you’re right and for him to make the next jump, he’s going to have to be dominant with both hands. The right hand has got to be defined a little bit more.

And, yes, he’s got to develop at least a 15-, 16-, 17-foot shot. And if he can develop those, then I think the NBA will welcome him with open arms. And I think it will make us much better.

He does not have to play with his back against the bucket all the time. He can step out, make that little shot or make plays off the dribble.

BLOOM: He needed some big man help around the basket last season. Is he going to get it this year?

WOODSON: Yes, with Michael Durr, who we brought in. He’s a good 6-foot-11 kid who’s not as athletic, but you can throw him the ball down there and he can score. He catches the ball well and he finishes around the bucket.

He’s got a nice little soft shot. And he’s an excellent rebounder.

BLOOM: Two things that have been so frustrating as a fan the last few years are the awful foul shooting, and the fact that we haven’t had a good 3-point shooter. How do you fix the foul shot problem? And will we have a 3-pointer shooter this season?

WOODSON: Well, the only way you to fix free throws is, you’ve got to shoot a lot. And from a coaching standpoint I have to get in between the ears of a lot of these guys. Free throws are free. You’ve got to feel good about stepping to the line and putting them in. I’ve always said with free throws, 90% of it is in the head. The other 10% is mechanics. So, you know, I’ve got to instill some confidence in them and then we’ve got to shoot a shitload of them.

As for threes, I think we’ll will be a bit better this year with Miller [Kopp], Xavier

[Johnson], and Parker [Stewart] coming in. [Trey] Galloway can make some, and Race [Thompson].

BLOOM: How would you describe yourself as a coach? Are you a strategist, a players’ coach, defense first?

WOODSON : I’m just a coach, man. I’m a guy that has learned a lot of systems that work for a lot of wonderful coaches over the years and I’m just trying to piece it all together.

You’ve got to compete on both sides of the ball—I figured that out a long time ago. You’ve got to be good offensively, and you’ve got to be great defensively in terms of getting stops and rebounding the basketball so you can go play offense. Guys have to be on the same page at the same minute, hitting open guys. And I need to know when you need a plug-in; who’s the guy to go to. There’s a lot of ways you can win basketball games.

Coaching is tough, guys, and I can’t sit here and tell you what kind of coach I am.

I like to think I’m a players’ coach. When I just coach, I don’t play favoritism even with superstars. If they need it, I’m going to be on their ass.

That’s just the nature of the business and I think you can be that way. If these players understand that you’re in their corner, and you really love what they’re about, and, you know, that’s just who I am. I’m not here to tear anybody down. I’m here to help everybody in a uniform who’s willing to accept help.

Because at the end of the day it’s just coaching—that’s all it is. I’m, not trying to be anybody but Mike Woodson. Trying to win basketball games, that’s what I’m about.

BLOOM: We have to ask you about this the whole NIL situation and players getting paid. You know, I’m sure over the years you’ve given this some thought—what’s your feeling about players making money?

WOODSON: Well, it’s going to change the dynamics of college basketball. And if you’re not on the cutting edge of it I don’t know how you can compete. I don’t know if it’s going to be for the good or the bad, but I’m not against these players getting paid.

BLOOM: Who’s the guy that the fans and the media may not know right now that could make a big impact this year?

WOODSON: I’ve watched Rob Phinisee now for several weeks, man, and he’s playing much better than I saw him in the past, for whatever reason, which is good for us. He’s an older guy who’s been around the block, and he’s played in the Big Ten and hadn’t had a lot of success. But I think he could play at a high level.

BLOOM: Any final word for fans and the media?

WOODSON : You know, I’ve never had battles with media, and the media has picked on me some over the years, but that’s a part of it and I get it. But hey, what you see is what you get. I’m not going to sell you a bunch of bull. I’m here to work, man. I’m trying to win a Big Ten and the national title, and I’ve got six years to try to get it done.

In seven seasons as head coach, Teri Moren has led the IU women’s basketball team to previously unseen heights. The Hoosiers finished the 2020–21 season at 21-6, including 16 Big Ten wins, and reached the Elite Eight for the first time ever. With all five starters returning, the expectations for an even deeper run in the NCAA Tournament are high.

BLOOM: Last year you got all the way to the Elite Eight and now the expectations are incredible. Are you feeling more pressure than usual?

MOREN: I’m a firm believer that if you do the work, that the success follows. So, I don’t feel the pressure of it—I’m not surprised by any of it. The goal when we set out here seven years ago was to build a program that 98

was going to be successful and get into the tournament, make deep runs, ultimately win a championship. This is just part of it. This is exactly what I thought it would feel like, and it’s been an incredible journey so far, but we have much more to do.

BLOOM: Probably every women’s coach for the last three or four decades has said some of the same things—we want to build a program, we know where we want to go—and none of them were able to achieve it. What have you done that other coaches may not have?

MOREN: I don’t know what their vision was. Here’s what I do know: You don’t build something without the right pieces in place, and that starts with making sure that you have incredible people around you and each of them brings something different to the table. We call this an egoless office. We just want to help our

players the best way we can to be successful, and that’s the other piece of it. You’ve got to find players that will buy in and be brought in to your vision.

I’m from a blue-collar family from southern Indiana, brought up by my grandparents because my mom and dad were working. And so this blue-collar mentality that I’ve always had, we’ve just brought it into this workspace.

We’ve been intentional on recruiting the types of kids that fit us, and they all have to have a blue-collar attitude of some type. You’re not going to win a championship only showing up to practice an hour and a half, two hours, four or five days a week; it’s going to take more to do that. We’ve made working hard cool. Now these younger kids walk into our program and they see those others, those vets, doing that type of work, and it becomes, ‘Oh this is what we do here.’ We’ve identified players that fit us, that want to work—doing more than what’s required.

BLOOM: When we did the cover story on the women’s team a couple years ago, I thought it was very interesting watching the players around you. In the picture we used on the cover, Brenna Wise had her arm draped over your shoulder. I can’t imagine anybody doing that to Bobby Knight or even Archie Miller.

There wasn’t that formality, that distance. Can you talk about that?

MOREN: You know, winning is important, we want to be successful. But what’s more important to me is that I’m having an impact and our staff is having an impact on these young women in a world that’s changing. And it’s changing fast. Just helping them develop into strong women is something that is a priority for me, and I think that comes from being invested in them, listening to them, engaging with them every single day. That’s what makes it so special, because they know I love them, because they know I care about them, because they know I have no agenda other than just wanting to help them. It makes it so much easier when I’m on their rear ends in practice, or when I put their feet to the fire, because they know it’s coming from the right place. I just want the best for them.

BLOOM: What you just said describes the chemistry between you and the players, and the players and each other. One of the expectations of these returning starters is to carry that chemistry to the bench, to the younger players, the new players. What other expectations do you have of that returning group?

MOREN: I think the great thing we have is leadership, from Ali Patberg, Grace Berger, and the other pieces—the Nikkis [Nicole Cardaño-Hillary] and the Aleksas [Aleksa Gulbe] and the Macs [Mackenzie Holmes].

I don’t have to walk into our film room and tell them what the goal is there—they already know what the goal is. That’s a great thing about those kids, to have the opportunity to go down to San Antonio [for the 2021 NCAA Tournament] and make a deep run, they got a taste of it. And they liked it. They really liked it. My job and our staff’s job is to prepare the best way we can to put them in a situation to have success, because they’re going to ultimately follow the game plan, they’re

going to do everything we’re going to ask them to do.

BLOOM: Tell us about the incoming freshmen.

MOREN: Kaitlin [Peterson] is a point guard out of Alabama and probably the quickest kid we’ve seen with the ball in a long time. We recruited our freshman class on Zoom, so we never have seen them face to face. I can only tell you what I’ve seen on film with she and Keyarah [Berry], as far as their athleticism.

Both are elite athletes, great scorers, obviously the best players in their high schools. Keyarah has almost 3,000 points in high school.

They’re going to be far from home, so that’s always the first test, making sure that they’re comfortable, they feel good in their environment, and that they’re ready to go to work.

Mona’s [Mona Zarić] a stretch four from Serbia that’ll be coming in, and I probably should point out also Kiandra Browne—we consider her a freshman, even though she was here for a year last year.

She came in with the intentions of sitting out a gap year, and so she sort of starts all over again as a freshman.

BLOOM: Are you still recruiting for this year?

MOREN: There’s this thing called the transfer portal. Every day you’re looking at the portal just to see if there’s anybody in there. When we’re building our depth, the one challenge that we have is convincing kids to come to Indiana. And when I say this, I say it respectfully. The kids in the portal that we feel can help us right now don’t want to come in

and not start, or they want to play a bunch of minutes. I think there’s a little bit of hesitation for those kids that are in the portal to look at Indiana and go, ‘Oh, I could see myself getting minutes here or there.’ So we’re really gonna have to rely on some of our young kids, the Chloe Moore-McNeils and the Kaitlins, Keyarahs, and Monas that’ll be here—the Kiandra Brownes—and we’ve really got to do a great job of getting them ready.

BLOOM: Okay, one final silly question.

You’re from Seymour. I only know one other person from Seymour—John Mellencamp.

So, are you guys buds?

MOREN: One of the great things about Hoosier Hysteria is that we always get to pick out the song that we’re going to come out to.

And in my seven seasons that I’ve been here, I always come out to a Mellencamp song. So, if you can get him to Hoosier Hysteria, I mean, he could serenade me. I can’t find anybody that has a strong enough connection to John to get him to do that for me, so if you guys can arrange that …

Last season, his fifth as head coach, Tom Allen took the team to their best season in more than seven decades. The Hoosiers finished ranked seventh in the AP poll and eighth in the coaches’ poll and Allen was named National Coach of the Year. The Hoosier Nation is hoping for even bigger things in 2021.

BLOOM: Congratulations on a great year. But now, for the upcoming season, there is probably the highest expectation in decades for an Indiana football team.

Feeling any pressure?

ALLEN: No. I mean, I’m excited because when I got here, we talked about changing expectations and creating belief. So, when that happens, you can’t fear it. You can’t plan for something, prepare for something, and when it starts happening, you can’t run from it. I’m excited; I believed this would happen.

BLOOM: Michael Penix Jr. is so important.

He is one of the best quarterbacks in the country. And yet, he seems fragile physically.

Although he’s a good runner, he was only used to carrying the ball in short, desperateyardage situations. Times like going for the two-point winning conversion against Penn State. And yet, the play that he got injured on was one of the only times where he carried the ball and it wasn’t a desperate situation. He made about 20 yards on the play, but basically, he didn’t even get tackled. He just sort of slipped when he went out of bounds.

Are you doing anything to protect him this season, to make him stronger?

ALLEN: There’s no reason to put him in harm’s way unnecessarily. But it is a contact sport, and when you’re a defensive coach and a defensive player you have one objective, and that’s to affect the quarterback. You want to harass him mentally and physically. Knowing that, you know that’s what everybody else’s goal is as well.

There’s no doubt that we’re not going to be running all those quarterback designed run calls, but there’s going to be times he’s not running and the play breaks down, you can’t just say, ‘Hey, timeout.’ In a very intense, purposeful way, we’re beefing up his body, gaining good solid weight dietarily.

The way he was injured last season, I agree with you, I saw him run out of bounds and I just thought he tripped. I never dreamed it was what it was because it never looked like it could possibly be that serious. So, we’re doing everything we can, but at the same time, we have two quarterbacks and Jack Tuttle played really, really well when he came in against Maryland, and played very well against Wisconsin. To me, we have two starters on our team that have proven they can win Big Ten games. So yes, Michael’s definitely a priority to keep him healthy, but it’s tackle football and you’ve got to play the game.

BLOOM: The transfer portal has become this omnipresent factor in the offseason. How has that changed the game for IU?

Great Expectations

ALLEN: There’s no question it’s made a very big change in our game. And it’s one of those things where you know whether you voted for it or not, like it or not, it’s one of the rules now, so you’d better embrace it, you’d better be able to maximize it. You know we don’t recruit junior college players, so that’s not allowed us to ever go after older players. Then they started having grad transfers and even that was challenging because our grad schools are legitimate, bona fide grad schools that take a strong GPA to get into, and not every school is like that. Trust me, I’ve been other places. So, we’ve not had a lot of opportunities to bring in grad transfers. The portal has given us a chance for the first time to bring in older players that can really address our needs.

BLOOM: I thought one of the best moments of the season occurred when you were being interviewed on TV after a win and Stevie Scott and other players came by to hug you, and I believe it was Dylan Powell who yelled out, “Recruits, come play for this man. Best coach in America.” Was that special moment for you?

ALLEN: It was a special moment because it was impromptu. It was on their way to the locker room after we had beaten Wisconsin.

All those guys had gotten here before the breakthrough of even 2019. They came here and they believed in the vision of what we thought we could do. There is genuine love and respect, mutually, both directions, you know, from me to them and them to me and all our coaches and this whole culture we built here. But those relationships take time, and that’s why I think it was special because it was from the heart, and it was just authentic and it gave you a little bit of a snapshot of who we are as a team.

BLOOM: Obviously you’ve been incredibly successful as a motivator, as a strategist, and as an all-around good human being, and that earned you National Coach of the Year. But I know you get some criticism for your mantra, LEO—Love Each Other.

ALLEN: It’s all about accountability. That’s a big, key piece of LEO that I think people miss. They embrace and latch on to the word love, and in the beginning, it was kind of misunderstood. They thought that was soft, that wasn’t manly, and that’s not how you run a football team.

I consider there are three levels of accountability. When you try to build a program we say, “These are the standards, this is our expectation, this is what we believe, this

is what we’re going to do, this is how we’re going to function on a daily basis,” and you hold everybody in that organization to those standards. And that’s where the consistency comes in, and that’s where the respect is built, because if I just say it, and I don’t do it, you won’t respect me.

But if my words match my actions, over time that creates a lot of trust and respect, and then eventually, man, there’s a strong bond that is developed. The players are Step 2 in accountability; it’s the players taking ownership of themselves towards those standards. And then the third level, which I thought was what happened in 2019, the players start holding each other accountable.

And that, to me, is when the program took off.

Then there’s the relationship piece. I spend a lot of time with our guys. I sit down with our guys, I want to know what they want, what are their dreams, what are their goals for their future, and I write it all down. Then I hold on to that, and if their behavior and their actions don’t match up with their goals, we sometimes penalize them for it. That’s tough love.

It’s not all hugging each other. My practices are tough. I’m hard on these guys, it’s holding people to high standards. It’s being consistent. And when they know you care about them, you can push them way harder than you could if they did it because I said so.

BLOOM: Last season, you won your division according to the rules at the beginning of the season. And then the Big Ten changed the rules in favor of Ohio State. It was suggested by someone extremely knowledgeable that there exists in the Big Ten a prejudice against IU—that teams who have been beating IU for decades aren’t thrilled with IU’s ascension.

Have you felt that at all?

ALLEN: I’ll be careful what I say here.

You know we’ve all lived long enough; we all know human nature well enough to know that when things become different, it can become uncomfortable. It causes things to be viewed a certain way, and we’re still in the process of doing that. The way things were handled in the postseason situations, we got judged based on our past, and I think that’s unfair. It’s human nature to do that and it’s hard to overcome. I

did feel that we had our chance to beat Ohio State, and had we beaten them head-to-head, and then some other weird kind of rule got manipulated and we still didn’t get to go, then I would have been hot and I’d have been out of the center stage, leading the band and saying, ‘This is wrong.’ But we had the opportunity, and they beat us on the field. We have to prove that we are legitimate year after year and can win the big one. We’ve not put those years backto-back-to-back together yet. We’re still in the process of building.

BLOOM: When you wake up in the morning, what excites you about this team as you approach the 2021 season?

ALLEN: Well, that we have a team full of guys that have been here since the beginning.

We have a strong leadership council group that I feel like is very intrinsically motivated to do great things in 2021. They weren’t satisfied with 2020, even though we had some very historic wins. There’s things these guys want to accomplish before they leave Indiana.

Football is a game of belief and it’s a game of passion; it’s a game of intensity and requires an internal fire. I think that a lot of our guys have that. It burns inside of them, and I know that’s inside this coaching staff. I’m excited about where we are, for sure, because I think we’ve got a football team that’s hungry, and it’s got something to prove.
