Speckles shine for cattle show team at Sydney Central NSW secondary school, Wellington, met with success at the 2021 Sydney Royal with their purebred Speckle Park entries. The school’s show team claimed equal first in the group of school carcases, with one Speckle Park steer making up their team of three. The same entry scored 88.5 points and placed third in the heavyweight carcase class. The steer was sired by Checkered Leeland, bred by Cayuse Speckle Park, Manilla, NSW, and was snapped up by Woolworths. It had a liveweight of 548kg, a carcase weight of 304.4kg, dressing percentage of 55.5, 10mm on the rib, 11mm on the rump and received maximum points for meat and fat colour. Cayuse and Six Star Speckle Park partner with the school to supply stud animals to the cattle show team, which were able to attend Yeoval, Wellington and Dubbo shows this year.
Meanwhile, the Gympie District Beef Liaison Group and Bundaberg Christian College and Isis District State High School hosted the 2021 Wide Bay Interschool Hoof and Hook competition in September at the Bundaberg Recreational Precinct. Chief judge was Graeme Wicks, Wondai, with classes for junior handlers, herdsman, judges for Years 7-12, and led steers and heifers in light, middle and heavy weight divisions. Bundaberg Christian College were awarded champion school and included in their team was a Speckle Park/Limousin cross steer bred by Matt and Shannon Sowden, Sowden Speckle Park to promote the benefits of the commercial worth of the breed. Maclean High School met with success at the Northern Schools Steer Show at Inverell by taking out the liveweight class (401420kg) with a Speckle cross entry from Ben Simpson, Brooms Head. Another entry from Ben was third in the mediumweight class for the school.
Speckle breeders happy to be back promoting the breed Speckle Park breeders were back in the showrings up and down the eastern seaboard this year after an enforced layoff due to COVID-19 in 2020. Black Diamond 94A Qiuck Sand Q158 took out supreme exhibit at the Euroa Autumn Beef Festival in Victoria for the Black Diamond Speckle Park stud. Quick Sand was sashed junior champion bull and champion British bull while purebred steer Black Diamond Skunk was commercial champion. Black Diamond was first in the pair of bulls, group of three and second in the sire’s progeny. Ewyn Speckle Park took a team of heifers to the Mount Pleasant Spring Beef Exhibition with Ewyn 1B Sassafras R29 taking out junior champion heifer. The event drew more than 100 cattle entries, 19 exhibitors and 12 breeds.

Sassafras R29 also won reserve intermediate champion heifer at the 2021 SA Junior Heifer Expo, exhibited by Emily Edwards. Rose Hill Speckle Park stud had a successful day out at the Mudgee Show in NSW with Rose Hill Reba grand champion all breeds female and Rose Hill Secret’s Out was grand champion all breeds bull. Secret’s Out went on to win supreme beef exhibit. Panorama Farm Speckle Park exhibited at the Armidale Show in NSW before heading to Sydney Royal. Panorama He’s Not Complicated Q25 took out junior and grand champion bull while Panorama Effect Q03 won senior champion bull.
