Eatonville Chess Team Excels at State Tournament

The Eatonville High School chess team made their 4th straight trip to the State Chess Tournament this year, and the results were impressive. Among a field of 50 teams (the largest tournament in state history) they began the weekend ranked 42nd by average player rating. This seeding was similar to previous years and, in past years, outperforming their seeding has proved difficult. Last year, seeded 35th out of 48 teams, they finished 34th. This year, however, they brought experience with them. Titus Lowe, Dominic Bennet-Warner, Corey Dempsey, and Carson Jones were all on last year’s state team, and were joined by freshman Foster Brinkman. Over the course of the two-day 6 round tournament, playing against the top players from every size classification in the state (1B-4A), they amassed 15 wins and 3 draws in 30 games earning them 16.5 points. This topped their previous

state record of 15.5 set in 2024, and placed them 19th out of the 50 teams, 23 ranks higher than their seeding. This finish-rank difference was the best in the tournament. They finished 4th among the 10 teams in the 2A classification, missing a trophy by 1 point. Alternate Gabe Stanely, competing in the all-comers reserve tournament finished 16th out of 43.

The team performance was led by sophomore Dominic BennetWarner on 2nd board who never lost a game, finishing with 2 draws and 4 wins in 6 games. Corey Dempsey who played 5th board on last year’s state team was moved up to 3rd board this year. Despite more difficult opponents he won 4 of his 6 games. Carson Jones (4th board) had 3 wins, Titus Lowe (1st board) had 2 wins and 1 draw, and Foster Brinkman earned the final 2 points that put the team score over the top.

With only one team member graduating this year, the future continues to look bright for Eatonville Chess.

Ski Season on Thin Ice

Arecord warm winter is having severe impacts on this year’s snowpack and winter recreation.

It will come as no surprise to Pierce County residents who enjoy snow sports that Washington’s 2026 mountain snowpack is significantly below average. At the end of January, statewide snow water equivalent (SWE), which is the amount of water stored in snowpack, was at just 59% of the median—marking the fourth-lowest level on record—primarily driven by record warmth so far this winter.

As a result, most Cascade basins report just 30–40% of typical snowpack for this time of year. For skiers and snowboarders, these conditions have translated into a disappointing season so far. Many resorts have struggled to open,

with some relying on isolated storm events or snowmaking. There is still hope for the winter season. Washington’s snow season typically reaches its peak from February into March. However, if warmer-than-average temperatures continue, it may be challenging for this year’s snowpack to fully recover.

State climatologists say this winter is better understood as a warm snow drought than a simple lack of precipitation. Washington entered late January with record warmth even as statewide precipitation ran above normal, leaving snowpack at just 59% of median statewide, the fourth-lowest for this point in the season. While snowpack typically builds into February and March, it would now take much above normal late-season snowfall to climb back into a near-normal range by April.

Locally, when ski resorts cannot operate at full capacity, it can

impact not only resort employees but also local small businesses, restaurants, lodging providers, and service workers who depend on winter tourism. The lack of a ski season hurts our winter economy by reducing overall spending in the area. This in turn lowers the amount of sales tax collected in Pierce County, impacting funding for essential services.

Snowpack in the Cascade Mountains has decreased by about 25% between the middle of the 20th century and 2006, and these declines are projected to accelerate due to climate change. Models project about a 40-60% decrease in spring snowpack, on average, by the 2080s. Declines in snowpack will decrease water supply in the summer and will continue to impact winter outdoor recreation opportunities – having adverse effects on our communities, ecosystems, and agriculture.

Eatonville High School Winter Sports Honored in 2A SPSL All-League Awards

The 2A South Puget Sound League recently announced its All-League honors for the winter sports season, and Eatonville High School student-athletes earned significant recognition across wrestling and basketball.

The Cruisers’ wrestling program stood out with multiple placements on the All-League teams, reflecting a strong season that carried over to impressive showings at the WIAA Mat Classic state championships in February.

Leading the way was junior Ethan Rogers, who earned first-team honors. Rogers

captured the 2A SPSL league title before placing third at state, showcasing his dominance throughout the year.

Sophomore Najalia “Nala” Baublits also secured first-team recognition on the girls’ side. She won the SPSL 2A league championship and finished fourth at Mat Classic, highlighting her emergence as one of the top wrestlers in the classification.

Several other Eatonville wrestlers received All-League nods. Sophomore Jarrin Ragazzo earned honorable mention after placing seventh at state. On the girls’ team, sophomore Khloee Young was named to the second team, while junior Abigail Lay received honorable mention. Sophomore Makenzie Ball

earned second-team honors and placed sixth at the state tournament.

Eatonville’s wrestling success contributed to a competitive winter for the small-town program, with multiple athletes advancing deep into the postseason brackets at Mat Classic.

Eatonville also had athletes recognized in boys’ basketball. Junior Jeremy Osborn Jr. received honorable mention all-league honors after serving as a key contributor for the Cruisers during the season. Senior Colton Herbrand also earned honorable mention recognition, closing out his final high school season with all-league honors.

On the girls’ basketball side, Eatonville’s team was recognized with the league’s Sportsmanship Award, reflecting the

program’s commitment to respect and competitive integrity throughout the season.

Junior Jordyn Green also received individual recognition for the Cruisers. Green was named second team all-league after a season in which she played a central role in Eatonville’s lineup.

Eatonville High School continues to build competitive programs in the SPSL 2A. The winter honors underscore the dedication of the student-athletes and coaching staffs in wrestling and basketball.

These recognitions come after a season where Eatonville wrestlers in particular made noise at the state level, with multiple top-eight finishes at Mat Classic. The league’s All-League teams and awards highlight the best performers from across the South Puget Sound 2A conference, which includes schools from the region competing in classifications aligned with WIAA standards.

For the Cruisers, the accolades serve as motivation heading into the spring sports season, where track and field, baseball, softball, and girls tennis will take center stage.

OUR LADY OF GOOD COUNSEL CATHOLIC CHURCH 253-875-6630 229 Antonie Ave. N. Eatonville, WA 98328

Dear Savvy Senior,

My adult kids keep warning me about scams, but it’s hard to know which calls and messages are dangerous. What scams are most commonly aimed at seniors right now? —Almost 80

Dear Almost,

Your kids’ concerns are well founded. Financial fraud is a massive – and rapidly growing – problem for older Americans. In 2024 alone, scams cost older adults an estimated $81.5 billion, according to the Federal Trade Commission. That staggering figure includes both reported losses and the many crimes that likely go unreported.

While many scams today target people of all ages, older adults are often singled out or suffer the greatest financial harm. From urgent phone calls and alarming emails to online romance schemes and bogus investment opportunities, scammers use high-pressure tactics, fear and emotional manipulation to convince seniors to hand over money or sensitive personal information.

Knowing the most common scams is the first line of defense. Here’s a list of scams seniors should watch for:

Imposter and government scams: Fraudsters pretend to be from Social Security, Medicare, the IRS, the police, banks, or utility companies. They claim there’s a problem requiring immediate payment or personal information and may threaten arrest or loss of benefits.

Tech support scams: Calls, emails, or pop-ups warn your computer has a virus. The scammer offers to “fix” it but instead steals money, personal data, or access to your device.

Grandparent or family emergency scams: Callers pose as a relative—often a grandchild—in distress and urgently request money. Some even use AI to mimic a loved one’s voice.

Investment and cryptocurrency scams: Offers for “too good to be true” investments, including crypto or high-yield retirement schemes, often promise big returns but lead to large financial losses.

Sweepstakes and lottery scams: You’re told you’ve won a prize but must pay fees or taxes first. Real lotteries never require payment.

Charity scams: Scammers call or email, asking for donations to fake charities, often after disasters. Always verify before giving.

Phishing and online fraud: Emails, texts, and pop-ups that look like they’re from banks, Amazon, or PayPal try to steal passwords, account numbers, or trick you into clicking harmful links.

“Never send money using gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency.”

Employment scams: Seniors seeking part-time work or ways to supplement their retirement should watch out for fake job offers on LinkedIn, indeed, and other online job sites. Scammers may promise easy income or work-from-home opportunities but ask for upfront fees, personal information, or involve illegal tasks like package reshipping. Always verify employers and never pay to apply.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF

Awareness and caution are your best defenses. Slow down when a call, email or text pressures you to act immediately. That sense of urgency is a red flag. Hang up, don’t click suspicious links, and verify any request by calling the organization directly using a number you look up yourself, or by checking with a trusted family member.

Never send money using gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency. Legitimate organizations will not ask for payment this way. Stay informed through trusted resources like the AARP Fraud Watch Network (aarp. org/fraudwatchnetwork), the National Cybersecurity Center (nationalcybersecuritycenter.org) and the Federal Trade Commission (consumer.ftc.gov).

www.p aci cpublishingcompany.com @paci cpubco

Romance scams: Scammers build fake online relationships on social media, dating sites and other interactive platforms, then invent emergencies or investment opportunities to get money. Seniors have lost millions to these schemes.

Medicare scams: Calls or texts claim to be from Medicare, asking you to verify your number, offering special plans, or warning of fraud. Medicare will not contact you this way.

Protect your accounts by setting up bank alerts, regularly checking your credit reports, and using strong, unique passwords. Some seniors also find it helpful to have a trusted family member or financial ally review unusual account activity. Report suspicious calls, messages or offers at reportfraud.ftc. gov.

Being informed, cautious, and deliberate can greatly reduce your risk of fraud – giving you and your family peace of mind.

Notes from the Eatonville Town Council Meeting – March 9th Kindergarten Enrollment for the 26-27 school year is in full swing

The Eatonville Town Council approved a lease agreement aimed at preserving one of the town’s historic fire engines and advanced a series of zoning and land-use measures for further consideration during its March 9 meeting.

LEASE APPROVED FOR HISTORIC FIRE ENGINE

The council approved Resolution 2026-I, authorizing Mayor Emily McFadden to execute a lease agreement with the South Pierce County Historical Society involving a historic fire engine owned by the town.

According to the resolution, Eatonville owns an antique fire engine and hose reel trailer dating to approximately 1925 that are no longer used for fire services.

Under the agreement, the historical society will take possession of the equipment in order to restore and display it for public viewing and educational purposes. The organization will perform restoration and maintenance work at no cost to the town.

The lease term is set for five years beginning in 2026, with the option to extend the agreement for up to four additional fiveyear terms if both parties agree. Either party may terminate the lease with 90 days written notice.

The agreement requires the fire engine and trailer to be stored in a covered location in Eatonville to protect the equipment from further deterioration.

COUNCIL REVIEWS ZONING CHANGES

Councilmembers also held first readings on a series of ordinances related to zoning and the town’s comprehensive plan involving several parcels along the Eatonville Highway corridor.

COMMERCIAL ZONING PROPOSED FOR MADISON AVENUE PARCEL

Ordinance 2026-3 proposes changing the zoning classification

for property at 349 Madison Ave. S (Parcel 0416231053) from Mixed Use (MU) to General Commercial (C2).

The request was submitted by Tibeer Investments, LLC through its representative, David Baublits. The Eatonville Planning Commission previously reviewed the proposal during a public hearing and recommended approval of the zoning change. If adopted, the ordinance would amend the town’s zoning map to reflect the new commercial designation.

COMPREHENSIVE PLAN AMENDMENT TIED TO REZONE

Because the zoning change affects the town’s long-range planning documents, Ordinance 2026-4 proposes updating the comprehensive plan’s future landuse map to change the parcel’s designation from Mixed Use to General Commercial.

Planning Commission members also recommended approval of the comprehensive plan amendment following a public hearing earlier this year.

ADJACENT PARCELS PROPOSED FOR RESIDENTIAL ZONING

A related proposal, Ordinance 2026-5, would rezone two nearby parcels — 0416231011 and 0416231054 — from Mixed Use to Single-Family Low Density (SF1).

Town officials said the change would help preserve town land and bring zoning designations into closer alignment with the community’s comprehensive plan.

OVERLAY REMOVAL

CONSIDERED

Ordinance 2026-6 would remove the Public Use Open Space overlay from portions of the town’s zoning map.

Town officials said the change is intended to better align the municipal code with the zoning map and reflect recommendations made during the planning review process.

FUTURE LAND-USE

DESIGNATION CHANGE

Councilmembers also reviewed Ordinance 2026-7, which would amend the comprehensive plan to change the future land-use designation for Parcel 0416231011 from Mixed Use to Public Use.

The proposal also follows a Planning Commission review and public hearing held earlier this year.

HOUSING DEFINITIONS UPDATE CONSIDERED

Councilmembers also reviewed Ordinance 2026-8, which proposes updates to the Eatonville Municipal Code related to housing definitions and zoning provisions.

The ordinance would add definitions for housing categories including emergency housing, emergency shelters, transitional housing and permanent supportive housing.

The changes are intended to bring the town’s code into alignment with state requirements regarding housing types that must be allowed in certain zoning districts.

The ordinances received first readings during the meeting and will return to the council for additional consideration.

Pierce County Council Approves Justice Fund, a New Fund Dedicated Solely to Public Safety

Funding supports law enforcement, courts, prosecution, public defense, juvenile justice, and jail operations.

Pierce County

The Pierce County Council voted yesterday to establish the Justice Fund, creating a dedicated, sustainable funding source for public safety and criminal justice. The measure, a 0.1% sales tax that equals one penny for every $10 spent, is expected to generate more than $27 million annually. It passed by a 5–2 supermajority vote, with Councilmembers Paul Herrera and Amy Cruver casting the only dissenting votes. Councilmembers Jani Hitchen, Rosie Ayala, Robyn Denson, Bryan Yambe, and Dave Morell voted in favor. It will now be signed by County Executive Ryan Mello.

Public safety is a cornerstone of Executive Mello’s Forward Together agenda, which is built on the goal of building communities that are safe, welcoming, and connected. Crime rates have been decreasing in Pierce County and county leaders want to ensure

that trend continues. The Justice Fund will ensure stable, sustainable funding to reduce crime and support fair and effective law and justice systems.

A COALITION BEHIND A COMMON GOAL

The vote marks the culmination of months of collaboration among Pierce County’s top law and justice leaders, including the Sheriff, Prosecuting Attorney, courts, public defenders, and juvenile justice, who united in unanimous support for the measure.

“This is what Forward Together looks like in action. Every part of our justice system came together around a shared goal, and today Pierce County has a more stable, sustainable foundation for public safety for years to come,” said Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello.

In fall 2025, Mello convened a Justice and Public Safety Funding Group made up of elected leaders and senior representatives from

across the county’s law and justice system — including the Sheriff’s Office, Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Department of Assigned Counsel, District Court, Superior Court, Juvenile Court, and Finance Department.

The group met multiple times to build consensus on how to prioritize new revenue. In a joint letter to the Council, the full work group wrote that they “deliberated in good faith, followed our guiding principles, and feel confident these investments will help every department better play their part in delivering effective and fair law and justice systems.”

The group was unanimous in its conclusion: “These Justice Fund investments are essential to improve public safety in Pierce County and to keep our community safe.”

WHY THE FUND IS NEEDED

Pierce County dedicates 76 cents of every General Fund dollar to public safety, yet costs for staffing

and state mandates are growing faster than revenue.

About 1,560 Pierce County employees carry out public safety and criminal justice work every day, responding to 911 calls, operating the county jail and juvenile facility, providing constitutionally required defense and prosecution, operating courtrooms, and maintaining the technology, facilities, vehicles, and equipment that keep the system running. Without new revenue, the County would have to postpone or cut programs and staff.

The state provides very limited revenue options to counties.

In 2025, the Washington State Legislature passed HB 2015, giving cities and counties the option to adopt a 0.1% local sales tax dedicated to public safety. This bill made the Justice Fund possible.

through hiring and retention incentives for deputies and corrections officers

• Courts and legal services — Strengthen courts by sustaining manageable caseloads and expanding therapeutic court options

• Equipment and technology

—Modernize critical tools including body-worn cameras and evidence management systems

• Prevention and reentry programs —Support programs designed to reduce repeat offenses and improve long-term community safety

ACCOUNTABILITY BUILT IN

A public performance dashboard and Justice Fund advisory body will ensure transparency and accountability in how funds are spent and what outcomes are achieved.

March Events at the Puyallup Fairgrounds

The Washington State Fair Events Center stays busy year-round, and March is no exception. From hobby conventions and shopping events to pop culture gatherings, the fairgrounds will host a variety of activities throughout the month. Whether visitors are looking for a niche hobby expo, family friendly browsing or a nostalgic convention experience, there are several opportunities to spend a day at the Puyallup grounds before the Spring Fair arrives in April.

Here is a look at some of the highlights scheduled for March.

The event is one of the largest golf expos in the Pacific Northwest and draws players ranging from beginners to seasoned golfers preparing for the upcoming season. Vendors showcase the newest clubs, training tools and apparel, while attendees can test equipment and receive professional club fittings.

Many visitors attend simply to browse the latest gear and book discounted tee times at courses across the region. For those eager to shake off the winter rust, the show also offers practice areas and opportunities to learn about improving technique before heading back to the course.

GEM & MINERAL SHOW

March 20–22

Rock collectors, jewelry enthusiasts and geology fans will find plenty to explore at the Puyallup Valley

which returns to the fairgrounds for three days of demonstrations, equipment showcases and interactive displays.

Gem and Mineral Show later in the month.

Hosted by the Puyallup Valley Gem and Mineral Club, the event

features vendors selling minerals, fossils, gemstones and handcrafted jewelry. Educational displays and demonstrations introduce visitors to lapidary arts such as stone cutting and polishing.

Families often attend to explore the colorful displays and learn about regional geology, while collectors search for rare specimens or unique stones to add to their collections. Demonstrations and exhibits also highlight how raw minerals are transformed into finished jewelry and decorative pieces.

REWIND WASHINGTON RETRO CONVENTION

March 28–29

March wraps up with a blast from the past at Rewind Washington, a pop culture convention celebrating entertainment from the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s.

The event brings together fans of retro video games, movies, television and comics. Vendors sell vintage toys, collectible memorabilia, gaming systems and artwork inspired by classic franchises.

Celebrity guests, artists and panels are also expected to be part of the weekend program, along with gaming areas where attendees can revisit classic consoles and arcade titles.

For many visitors, the convention offers a chance to relive childhood favorites while introducing younger generations to the pop culture icons that defined earlier decades.

A BUSY MONTH BEFORE SPRING FAIR

March events offer a preview of the wide range of activities hosted at the Puyallup fairgrounds throughout the year. From niche hobby shows to large conventions, the Washington State Fair Events Center regularly draws visitors from across Pierce County and the greater Puget Sound region.

With the Washington State Spring Fair just around the corner in April, March events provide a quieter but still lively lead into the fair season. For residents looking for something to do on a weekend, the fairgrounds continue to serve as one of the region’s busiest gathering places.

Spring Forward with Money-Saving Energy Efficiency Tips

The days are getting longer as we move toward summer, making this a good time to refresh your home and revisit ways to save energy and money. Longer days and warmer weather make spring an ideal time to take on home improvement projects that can also lower utility costs.

CLEAR THE WAY FOR EFFICIENT HEATING AND COOLING.

Spring is a good time to clean heating vents and replace furnace filters. Simple steps like changing a furnace filter can improve efficiency and indoor air quality. Homeowners considering equipment upgrades may also want to explore high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, including ductless heat pumps, which provide both heating and cooling.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE LATEST HOME THERMOSTAT TECHNOLOGY

Smart thermostats can help households monitor and control energy use from almost anywhere. Lowering the thermostat by 7 to 10 degrees while sleeping or away from home can also help reduce heating costs.

CONSIDER A HEAT PUMP WATER HEATER

Heating water is one of the biggest energy uses in many homes. Heat pump water heaters can use significantly less energy than standard electric water heaters. Washing clothes in cold water when possible can also help cut energy use.

SEAL IN THE SAVINGS WITH HOME WEATHERIZATION AND INSULATION

Households can lower utility bills by reducing heating or cooling loss through leaks and gaps. Keeping windows and doors closed when heating or cooling systems are running, and using caulk or weather stripping to seal drafts, can make a noticeable difference.

MAKE AN ENERGY SAVING PLAN.

Understanding how much energy your home uses is an important first step toward lowering costs and improving comfort year-round. Many utility providers, public agencies, and community organizations offer tips, tools, or home energy assessments to help households identify opportunities for savings. The more efficient a home becomes, the lower monthly bills may be.

Customers may also have access to utility programs that offer incentives for reducing or shifting energy use during periods of high demand. When many households participate, these small adjustments can help promote a more reliable and stable energy supply across the community.

NEED HELP MANAGING YOUR ENERGY BILLS?

Many utility providers and community programs offer resources to help customers manage energy costs, including:

• Budget billing, which spreads energy costs more evenly throughout the year to help avoid seasonal spikes

• Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, which provides federal assistance for qualifying households

• Utility assistance programs – Many energy providers offer bill assistance or hardship programs for qualifying customers

• Energy assistance grants available through community partners and local agencies

• Payment arrangements or flexible payment plans for past-due balances

• Medical emergency protections for customers who rely on electricity for certain health needs
