Harvest Time at North Creekside A team of neighbors, farmers from Tri-Cycle Farms, and North Creekside managers have created a productive garden where there was once just lawn. So far in its first season, the garden has produced fresh peppers, okra, tomatoes, carrots, herbs, flowers, and more. Ripening soon: watermelons!

There’s more work to be done.

Soon, gardeners will be planting fall crops like beets, garlic, and greens. All are welcome to help out with the garden, and no experience is necessary. Come help harvest, spread straw mulch to prepare the garden for winter, and plant apple trees. We’d love for you to join us. Ask in the office about the next workday!

Crock Pot Recipe

PULLED PORK SANDWICHES Specialized Executive Assistant Hope Haynes loves this “low and slow� recipe for feeding a crowd on a chilly fall day.

Ingredients 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 2 teaspoons hot paprika 1 teaspoon mustard powder 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 3 -4 lb.boneless pork shoulder, trimmed of excess fat 2 teaspoons vegetable oil 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar, plus more to taste 3 tablespoons tomato paste Your favorite buns Combine 1 tablespoon brown sugar, the paprika, mustard powder, cumin, 2 teaspoons salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper in a small bowl. Rub the spice mixture all over the pork.

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet; add the pork and cook, turning, until browned on all sides, 5 minutes. Remove the pork and transfer to a plate; whisk 3/4 cup water into the drippings in the skillet. Transfer the liquid to a 5 or 6quart slow cooker.

Add the vinegar, tomato paste, the remaining 2 tablespoons brown sugar and 2 cups water to the slow cooker and whisk to combine. Add the pork, cover and cook on low, 8 hours.

NEW LAUNDRY EQUIPMENT New washers and dryers are coming to North Creekside! These machines will have a larger load capacity than the older machines. They will use reloadable smart cards, so you will not have to use quarters.

There still will be a quarter option for those who wish to continue to use them.

Remove the pork and transfer to a cutting board. Strain the liquid into a saucepan, bring to a boil and cook until reduced by half, about 10 minutes.

Season with salt. Roughly chop the pork and mix in a bowl with 1 cup of the reduced cooking liquid, and salt and vinegar to taste. Serve on buns with barbecue sauce and coleslaw.

PUMPKIN PATCHES As the days grow shorter, thoughts turn to Halloween, and Northwest Arkansas has some great places to pick a pumpkin!

Dickey Farms, at 14306 Wildcat Creek Road in Springdale has a beautiful selection, and you can explore the fields and a bubbling creek in a valley surrounded by forest. In the same area, Ranalli Farms at 1960 W. Henri DeTonti Blvd, Tontitown, is open year round, offering baked goods and all sorts of produce in addition to pumpkins.

McGarrah Farms (14816 Miser Road, Pea Ridge)and Farmland Adventures (5355 Parsons Rd, Springdale) offer more than just pumpkins, with corn mazes, petting zoos, and more for an additional fee. Vanzant Fruit Farms at 3705 E Highway 264 in Lowell has a beautifully landscaped pumpkin patch, homegrown apples and other goodies.
