2013 S-WORKS ROAD SHOE >

If the S-Works Road Shoe has a father, it’s Rob Cook. As the Design Director for Footwear and Softgoods, he’s been knee deep in the weeds of raising this shoe. Along with the footwear team, he’s spent two years fine-tuning its development and getting it to where it is today. So imagine how he felt, tuning in to the live stream of the Tour of Qatar in February, days after the team handed Tom Boonen a pair of white prototypes (prototypes affectionately and secretly dubbed “Angel Slippers”, because people put them on and fly away from the group). When it came to designing a game-changing TT helmet, we once again turned to McLaren to bring their F1-winning aerodynamic knowledge and expertise to the project. DISSIDENT The Dissident was created with lofty goals — to make a helmet 100 grams lighter and more ventilated than the current leading model, plus exceed all of the consumer safety standards associated with downhill bicycle helmets.

From the bike park to the race course, the Dissident is designed to protect riders who push the limits of downhill speed and big air. The carbon fibre Dissident is super-lightweight and incorporates cutting edge safety features to give riders the confidence to push the boundaries of mountain biking. We designed the Dissident to be compatible with neck braces, and the Shock Doctor Eject helmet removal system that is currently mandatory in motocross; complete with routing for the inflation tubing.

While we were developing the helmet, we also wanted to make it as safe as possible for when the helmet needed to be removed by medical personnel. To accomplish this, we developed a proprietary snap-in/slide out system to allow the cheekpads to be removed while the rider is still wearing it. Our system works very well, and doesn’t have the weight and cost penalties of using other methods to keep pads in place. In addition to premium safety and comfort, to make the Dissident the total package of performance and flair, with close attention given to the aesthetic design.
