Join our expert Guide Lecturers John Shepherd Andante Guide Lecturer – Croatia cruises John Shepherd is an archaeologist who has worked extensively in the field in Europe, for example in Italy, France and Bulgaria. He is a specialist in the study of ancient glass. Much of John’s career has been focused upon Roman provincial archaeology, working at the Museum of London for over 20 years. He published Professor W. F. Grimes’s post war excavations on the London Temple of Mithras and the Cripplegate Roman Fort, and also established the Museum’s Archaeological Archive and Research Center. He left the Museum in 2004 to work more closely with developing the use of museum archaeological collections in universities and schools, as well as teaching at the Highgate Literary and Scientific Institute on various aspects of European archaeology.

Eugenia Alexiou Local Guide Lecturer – Greek cruise Eugenia Alexiou was born in Athens. She studied Archaeology and Art History at the National University of Athens and holds a Masters degree in Byzantine Art. Her great passion, since she participated in excavations on Santorini, is for ancient Aegean civilizations, particularly relating to the Bronze Age. Eugenia is the onboard lecturer for M/S Galileo.

Day One | Dubrovnik Arrive in Dubrovnik and transfer to the port to embark M/S Princess Aloha. Before our welcome dinner, our Guide Lecturer will give an overview of the Dalmatian Coast’s history as well as the tour itinerary for the upcoming week.

Day Two | Kočula Early in the morning, we set sail for the island of Korčula, with a swimming stop en route (weather permitting). Korčula was reputedly the birthplace of legendary explorer, Marco Polo, and in many ways, its postcard-perfect old town, with its towers and turrets, narrow cobbled lanes, and stone townhouses, seems to have remained unchanged in the centuries since. A walking tour tells its story, and then, there is time to explore on your own and choose a restaurant for dinner (independent). Be sure to try the local Grk wine, a high-quality dry white made from grapes grown nowhere else in the world.

Day Three | Pučišća (Brač) The island of Brač has made a unique contribution to world culture over thousands of years – the white stone from its quarries has been used in the building of, among other iconic buildings, Diocletian’s Palace, The White House, and Budapest’s Parliament.

The stonemasonry tradition is still strong and, in the village of Pučišća, we visit the Stonemasonry School to learn more about the skills involved in sculpting Brač stone.

Back onboard M/S Princess Aloha, the Captain hosts drinks and a special dinner.

Day Four | Omiš - Split For 300 years from the 12th century to the 15th century, the pirates of Omiš were the masters of the Adriatic and one of the most powerful maritime forces of the entire Mediterranean. Superb shipbuilders and sailors, they crafted a fleet perfect for stealth attacks and even preyed on the likes of the Papacy and the Crusaders. The pirate ‘dukes’ reigned from this mainland stronghold and, even when their hegemony fell to the mighty navy of the Serenissima, the Venetian Republic, they still managed to hold fast in their fortresses for 24 years. Some of these great edifices still stand and may be explored on a walking tour, after which we will board a small boat to sail into Cetina River Canyon, a protected nature area.

After lunch, M/S Princess Aloha sails on to Split, where a guided tour takes in the attractive seafront promenade and the vast palace complex of the 3rd-century Roman Emperor Diocletian, which now comprises much of the old town of Split. With plenty of excellent restaurants to choose from , the evening is at leisure in Split. Before our arrival, our Guide Lecturer will give a talk on Diocletian and the later Roman Empire of the 3rd and 4th centuries AD.

Day Five | Bol (Brač) - Stari Grad (Hvar) The Golden Horn, at the small town of Bol back on the island of Brač, is one of Croatia’s great beaches – a 580 -yard-long ‘spit’ of golden pebbles which changes direction with the wind. We stop to relax and swim here before heading to Hvar, an island much loved by Europe’s fashionable jet-setters, but also one which has a quiet side away from the summer resorts, in its fields of lavender and hilltop fortresses. We dock in Stari Grad, one of Croatia’s oldest towns, with a history dating back to the ancient Greeks, where you are free to choose from one of the excellent cafes and restaurants that line its harbor.

Day Six | Hvar - Mljet Sailing around the island of Hvar this morning, we arrive in Hvar Town, a delightful ‘Dubrovnik in miniature’, with Gothic buildings, marble streets and fortified walls. Here, we see the oldest public theater in Europe, dating to 1612, which has recently reopened its doors, and spend some pleasant time exploring the town’s historic heart.

After lunch, we continue to Mljet, the greenest of the Dalmatian Islands, for a visit to tranquil, beautiful Mljet National Park, home to five types of forests, a myriad of bird species, and two deep lakes. Mljet also has a rich cultural heritage, with bright folk costumes and charming traditional handicrafts.The evening is at leisure to dine independently and to soak up some of the local color.

Day Seven | Dubrovnik M/S Princess Aloha returns to Dubrovnik this morning, and after lunch, we take a tour of the city, jewel-like with its characteristic ruby red roofs encircled by white-gold walls. This UNESCO World Heritage Site needs little introduction – its fame is well-earned, but, in the height of summer, it can be overwhelmed by tourists. Our visit here in the Autumn is much more pleasant and tranquil, especially in the evening after the day-trippers have departed. We visit the elegant 15th -century Rector’s Palace, home to the rulers of Ragusa, as Dubrovnik was then known, along with the Franciscan Monastery and one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe (which is still in operation). In terms of quality restaurants, Dubrovnik has an wealth of riches, and you are sure to find a memorable dining venue here.

Day Eight | Dubrovnik We disembark M/S Princess Aloha after breakfast and transfer from the port of Dubrovnik to the international airport for our individual flights home.

Day Two | Dubrovnik - Elaphiti Islands - Slano An undoubted icon of world travel, Dubrovnik is unmissable. This morning, we appreciate why George Bernard Shaw described this enchanting walled, medieval city as “paradise on earth”. On a walking tour of Dubrovnik’s gleaming stone streets, we make stops at the elegant 15th-century Rector’s Palace, home to the rulers of old Ragusa, along with the Franciscan Monastery and its ancient pharmacy.

Enjoy magical views as M/S Equator sails around Dubrovnik’s city’s walls en route to one of the tranquil Elaphiti Islands for a swim stop. Back on the mainland, and the Peljesac peninsula noted for high-quality wine production, Slano is our gateway to Ston, a once fortified village now best known for its succulent oysters, which we get to sample this evening.

Day Three | Mljet Our voyage continues to Mljet, the greenest of the Dalmatian Islands. Here, we spend time in the picturesque, verdant Mljet National Park and take a boat ride to St. Mary Isle to visit an ancient Benedictine monastery, an old abbey, and 12th century church.

We berth in the port of Pomena this evening, a tiny village with just 50 permanent inhabitants, but which still offers a choice of restaurants for dinner.

Day Four | Korčula Stopping for lunch at a secluded bay on the way, we sail today to Korčula, reputedly the birthplace of Marco Polo. The enchanting island is home to one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, and we explore its Gothic palaces, stone streets, and fairytale towers. Gourmet delights await this evening at whichever restaurant you choose, with fresh fish and seafood a particular pleasure, accompanied by the excellent local wine.

Day Five | Vis M/S Equator sails on to Vis, formerly a Yugoslav naval base. As a result of decades of restricted access, Vis has a special charm – ‘the Mediterranean as it once was’. We have the chance to explore the attractions of Vis, including a Roman thermal palace and a small archaeological museum displaying a 4th century BCE bronze of Artemis, along with time at leisure, during which you may sample some of the island’s renowned wine.

Back onboard, a sumptuous Captain’s Dinner is served this evening.

Day Six | Biševo - Hvar - Stari Grad (Hvar) Following a stop at tiny Biševo to visit the luminescent natural phenomenon known as the Blue Cave (weather permitting), M/S Equator sails on to Hvar, the sunniest of the Dalmatian Islands. Hvar Town, another walled gem of Gothic buildings and marble streets, is a particular highlight, and we visit the oldest public theater in Europe and the Renaissance cathedral. We berth further along the island in Stari Grad, which justifies its translation (‘old town’) with a history that stretches back 2,500 years. Choose one of the excellent cafés and restaurants that line the harbor here for dinner.

Day Seven | Bol (Brač) - Split After a stop at the Golden Horn, a breathtaking, constantly shape-shifting beach on the island of Brač, M/S Equator sails on to Split. Before our arrival, our Guide Lecturer will give a talk on Diocletian and the later Roman of the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. Here, in the land of his birth, the Roman Emperor Diocletian retired, having built the most extraordinary palace complex, which now comprises much of the old town. There are Roman-era remnants to admire – not least the Temple of Jupiter (now cathedral baptistery) and the Peristyle, the city’s elegant central square – along with Gothic and Renaissance buildings, which add further luster to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. With amazing restaurants to choose from, you’ll be spoiled for choice at dinner.

Day Four | Epidaurus Included Epidaurus Excursion Early this morning, we drive to the ancient site of Epidaurus, renowned throughout the Greek world as a healing sanctuary. Day Seven | Pylos Optional Pylos Excursion Pylos is home to some fascinating ruins, including the Palace of Nestor, the best-preserved complex of its kind from the late Bronze Age. The excellent archaeological museum in Chora is particularly strong on Mycenaean history.

Day Five | Nafplion (Mycenae) - Monemvasia Optional Mycenae Excursion After a short walking tour through the colorful city of Nafplion, we head out into the countryside of Argolis to visit the remains of the Bronze Age city of Mycenae, by legend the city of Agamemnon and one described by Homer as “rich in gold”.

Day Six | Gythion (Mani) Included Mani Excursion Mani is Greece at its wildest and most beguiling. Few land tours can access this peninsula immortalized by Patrick Leigh Fermor (and where the writer set up home), but small ships can. Our excursion takes in the natural splendor of Cape Tenaro and the Dirou Caves, along with the charming town of Areopolis.

After lunch onboard, M/S Galileo sails to Pylos this evening.

Day Eight | Katakolon Optional Olympia Excursion We drive from Katakolon to Olympia, the legendary site of the original, pan-Hellenic Olympic Games and spiritual birthplace of the modern-day spectacular. We visit the ancient stadium, the temples of Zeus and Hera, and the excellent museum dedicated to the Olympic Games of antiquity.
