6 Experience Italy

Experience Italy in many different ways If you close your eyes and picture Italy, what do you see? Perhaps you are imagining the mighty Colosseum in Rome, the typical Tuscan landscape lined with cypress trees as the sun sets behind a winery, or the brightly coloured houses of the Cinque Terre. Of course, all of these sights are synonymous with this wonderful country, but we want to take you deeper into its rich heritage, history and culture. Instead of just gazing upon the Colosseum, let us take you to its little-visited subterranean and higher-level areas. Rather than sitting in the audience for a stunning stage performance, we can extend to you a private invitation to tour the backstage parts of the iconic opera house that hosts it. We won’t just take you to great restaurants for delicious meals, we’ll introduce you to local chefs who will teach you how to make regional dishes with authentic flavours.

Marvel at masterpieces Badia di Cava, Salerno

Whatever you want from a holiday – whether it’s indulgent tastings at family-run wineries, the chance to wander gardens that aren’t usually open to the public, expert-led visits to off-the-beaten-track archaeological sites or something that will challenge you to the limits as you raise money for a worthy cause – we can make your Italian dream tour a reality.

Supporting the locals

From a member of the exclusive Italian Society of Cheese-Tasters to people who have both lived and worked in the country, our team of Italy experts is both diverse and highly skilled. The itineraries we create for these tours showcase the true heart of each region we visit, and working on them continues to be a real passion project for us. The relationships we’ve built with producers, wineries and other places we visit year after year allow us to bring you memorable experiences.

As a close-knit operation ourselves, we understand the importance of supporting independent businesses. This means that we seek out wineries that have been in the same family for generations and restaurants run by the very people who populate the towns we visit, and we bring our travellers to places that add something to the local economy. Meeting the locals and supporting them through responsible tourism helps us to do our part and lets you discover authentic stories.

For almost 35 years now, we’ve been taking groups of like-minded people on unforgettable tours of Italy. The best thing about returning to a city is undoubtedly the bonds we have made with the people who live and work there. As a result of not only our friendship, but loyalty, we often find that we can open doors to experiences that are ordinarily closed to visitors. The special access we have secured for our tours ensure that breathtaking moments await in Italy.

Our expert guides will illuminate the country for you... One of the best things about treating yourself to a place on one of our trips is that you will be joined by either a tour manager, an expert guide or, depending on the brand you choose to explore the world with, both. If you join an Andante Travels, Bare Bones or Travels In tour, you will be joined by a Guide Lecturer for the duration of your holiday. The working knowledge they have of your destination means that each site, artefact and location you discover will be brought to life. With Arblaster & Clarke, you will sample delicious vintages alongside a Wine Guide and we have Masters of Wine, television personalities and wine writers on our books to ensure you get the most out of your experience. Brightwater Holidays offers the services of a professional tour manager and – in some cases – a horticulture expert, and Historical Trips sees an expert historian, author or renowned personality accompany its educational breaks. Finally, Archaeological Tours’ trips are led by Expert Scholars.

An exclusive invitation awaits on our Reserve Piedmont tour... During our Reserve Piedmont tour, we accept an invitation to visit Gaja. Considered to be revolutionary winemakers, this visit is undoubtedly the highlight of our trip. Angelo Gaja, the current owner and president, challenged the wine world after introducing non-indigenous grapes to his family’s celebrated vineyards, and he later began using Barbera grapes in his Barolos and Barbarescos. Angelo was dubbed “the undisputed king of Barbaresco” by the LA Times, and both the Wall Street Journal and Decanter described him as “the man who dragged Piedmont into the modern world.” Here, we get to taste Italy’s finest. Duce! Most notorious in Hitler’s Nazi regime, the creed of Fascism dominated the mid-20th century history of both Europe and the wider world. But it was Benito Mussolini, who ruled Italy as its dictator from 1922 until his downfall and violent death amid the chaotic final days of WWII, who created it. At many points throughout this tour, our idyllic surroundings belie the dark deeds undertaken there. Sites will be brought to life by our expert guide lecturer and Mussolini’s youngest grandchild is also set to make a very special private appearance. This is a highly original tour and aims to give guests a penetrating insight into Mussolini the man, his regime and his doctrine.

Rachele Mussolini set for special appearance The youngest grandchild of Benito Mussolini, Rachele, will join this tour in Predappio. Herself a politician, Rachele will give a lecture to the tour group before opening the family crypt, which we visit together.

Mussolini and Hitler, June 18 1940

Day 1 After our flight, we arrive in Rome and transfer to our hotel. We have dinner and enjoy welcome drinks, along with an introductory lecture from our guide. Day 2 Today, we tour the EUR district, home to examples

of Fascist modernist architecture intended to showcase the ‘progressive’ nature of the regime. As well as visiting the Piazza Venezia and the balcony from where Mussolini delivered his speeches to ecstatic crowds of his admirers, we end the day at Villa Torlonia. This Neoclassical beauty was the Duce’s Rome residence, rented by him from the 1920s onwards for a nominal one lira per year. Day 3 We begin our day with a visit to the Foro Italico sports complex, which strove to emphasise Fascism’s spurious continuity with the glories of ancient Rome. We visit the site of one of Fascism’s darkest deeds: the massacre of 335 innocents in the Ardeatine caves carried out by the Nazis in March 1944, in reprisal for a partisan attack on a German column. We climb high into the Appenine mountains, arriving at the Hotel Campo Imperatore on the Gran Sasso. Here, we visit the same hotel where, in 1943, German paratroops and Waffen SS commandos staged a glider raid to rescue Mussolini after he was deposed and arrested by his own Fascist Grand Council. Our stay includes a private view of Mussolini’s bedroom, furnished as it was during his enforced stay. Day 4 Today we drive to Predappio, Mussolini’s hometown and burial place. Along with nearby Forlì, where we stay this evening, the town was named ‘La Città del Duce’ or ‘the city of the Leader’. Here, we see Mussolini’s Casa Natale and the family tomb, where, after many vicissitudes, his body was eventually interred in 1957. Mussolini’s granddaughter Rachele, herself a politician for the rightwing Fratelli d’Italia (‘Brothers of Italy’) party, will meet our tour for a lecture. She will also answer questions on living with the legacy of her infamous forebear. Afterwards, we have the opportunity to explore the shops on Predappio’s main street, controversially still selling souvenirs and relics that celebrate the town’s most infamous son.

www.historicaltrips.com/qrf

Day 5 Visit the Villa Carpena, a museum of Fascism that was the home of the Mussolini family. We then drive to Verona, where we visit the scene of the trial and execution of Mussolini’s son-in-law - and former Foreign Minister Count Ciano, before lunch. Afterwards, we continue on to beautiful Lake Garda, centre of the Italian Social Republic run by Mussolini under German ‘guidance’ in the last days of the war. After checking into our hotel here, we stop at the Villa Flordaliso, where Mussolini cavorted with his mistress, Clara Petacci. Day 6 In Salo, the lakeside resort that lent its name to Mussolini’s radical regime — set up in 1943, while northern Italy was still controlled by the Germans and their Fascist allies — we visit the Mussolini museum. After lunch, we visit the eccentric Vittoriale, the grandiose home of poet Gabriele D’Annunzio, a prophetic forerunner of Fascism as well as a rival to Mussolini. An amazing combination of taste and kitsch, the house and grounds, with their sunken ship, simply have to be seen to be believed! We end the day with refreshments at the luxurious Villa Feltrinelli Grand Hotel, Mussolini’s home and headquarters during the Salo republic. Day 7 We drive to Lake Como, rivalling Garda in the beauty

of its scenery. After checking into our hotel, we replay the Duce’s final hours as he desperately drove north towards Switzerland in April, 1945. Disguised in a German uniform, he was arrested in the lakeside town of Dongo and was subsequently executed with his mistress Clara Petacci by partisans at the gates of the nearby Villa Belmonte. This evening, we have free time to spend as we wish on the picturesque Lake Como. Day 8 Today, we drive to Milan to visit the two city squares that bookend the beginning and end of Italian Fascism. On the Piazza san Sepulcro, on March 23rd, 1919, the Fascist party was founded. In the Piazza san Loreto on April 29th, 1945, the executed bodies of Mussolini, his mistress, and his closest collaborators were displayed and degraded. After visiting these sites, we fly back to London.

The Boboli Gardens, Florence

22nd - 28th April with Trevor Edwards The Italian heartland of Tuscany represents perhaps the archetypal image of Italy, with its walled towns, hilltop villages, rolling vineyards and, of course, the beauty of Renaissance Florence itself. Stretched along both sides of the River Arno, with a skyline that has inspired countless artists, Florence somehow already seems familiar. We are privileged to be joined by a lecturer from the British Institute for historical walks around Florence and Siena, and for guided tours of the fabulous Uffizi Gallery as well as the Galleria dell’Accademia.

Itinerary Day 1 Fly from London to Florence and transfer to our hotel, where drinks await us prior to dinner this evening. Day 2 Visit the Boboli Gardens, remarkable for its history, formal layout, fountains, grottoes, and its Roman, Renaissance and Baroque sculptures. Our next stop is the Bardini Gardens and Villa, which date back to the 14th century and are something of an unknown treasure. Later, we take a history-themed walk around the Piazza del Duomo with our British Institute lecturer. Day 3 We begin our day at one of Florence’s most iconic

sites: the unmissable Uffizi Gallery. Later, we join our lecturer at another icon of Renaissance art: The Galleria dell’Accademia, home to Michelangelo’s David.

Gardens of Ninfa

Day 1 We depart from London’s Heathrow airport and catch a direct flight to Rome. Upon arrival, we are met by our guide and will continue by coach to the city for a short tour. Rome has a justified claim as one of the world’s greatest cities, combining the magnificence of the Renaissance with the vibrancy and excitement of a thriving city. The sights are both many and varied, including the Colosseum, St. Peter’s Square and Basilica, the Spanish steps, and the Trevi Fountain. Later, we transfer to our hotel and in the evening we can enjoy welcome drinks and dinner. Day 2 Viterbo is the first destination on our itinerary for

today. This is the capital of northern Lazio and the region’s most historic centre – a medieval town that, during the 19th century, was something of a rival to Rome. As we see on our guided tour, a number of grand palaces and a host of old churches are enclosed by an intact set of medieval walls. A short distance away in Bagnaia, we find the splendid gardens of Villa Lante, described by European garden expert Charles Quest-Ritson as “one of Italy’s greatest Renaissance gardens”. This study in geometry and symmetry dates to 1568, when it was designed for Cardinal Gianfrancesco Gambara by the architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola. After a captivating day, we return to our hotel in the early evening and leisure time is available.

1382 it was burned and beset by malaria, which caused it to be abandoned. It remained deserted for hundreds of years, but after the mosquito hazard was removed in 1922 by draining the surrounding marshes, the Duchess of Sermoneta and her son, Prince Caetani, began to lay out a romantic garden among the village ruins. At least 10,000 plants were collected, and planting has continued ever since, giving Ninfa an enchanting beauty where flowers from all over the globe thrive in glorious companionship. Due to the fragile nature of the gardens, our visit here will be by way of a conducted private tour, which should last for around one and a half hours. Day 4 Another wonderful garden awaits us this morning – the Villa d’Este in Tivoli. These 16th century gardens are renowned for their use of water. Romantically overgrown with tall pines, evergreen oaks and cedars, visitors’ senses here are entranced by the continuous sound of cascading water. Amble along the Path of One Hundred Fountains to the remains of the miniature Rometta, constructed in 1568 to represent Rome and its seven hills washed at the foot by the River Tiber. In the afternoon, we make our transfer to the airport for our return flight back to London.

Day 3 Following breakfast this morning, we will visit the gardens of Castel Gandolfo, the traditional papal residence just outside of Rome. The property has been in papal hands since 1596, thought it wasn’t until the 17th century, when Pope Urban VIII commissioned architect Carlo Maderno to design a villa fit for a pontiff, that popes began spending their summers in the healthy air of the Alban Hills. Our tour here begins with a shady walk to the Giardino della Madonnina, where holm oaks twist out of ancient masonry and leads on to the Giardino del Belvedere, formed by a series of rigidly geometric parterres. In the afternoon, we visit Ninfa. Named after a mythical nymph, whose tears were shed for a lost lover, this garden is considered the most beautiful in all of Europe by many. It has a turbulent history as back in

Original Tuscany 18th - 22nd November 2019 with Tom Bruce-Gardyne Surrounded by a backdrop of the quintessential Tuscan landscape – rolling, cypress-studded hills – visit estates that have been at the forefront of quality and whose fortunes we’ve followed for almost 20 years now. During this five-day tour, you’ll discover the wonderful blend of respect for tradition and determined attitude, which has made Italy one of the most exciting wine countries in the world. Yes, the outstanding produce is what makes this a stand-out tour, but we also allow time to explore some of the classic Tuscan towns, from Siena to San Gimignano.

Itinerary Day 1 Upon arrival, we make our first visit to the hamlet of Fonterutoli. The Mazzei family have owned the village since 1435 and here we visit their gravity-fed cellars before sampling their wines. After, we check into our hotel and enjoy dinner together in Radda in Chianti. Day 2 After breakfast, we enjoy our first visit and tasting of the day at Fontodi. Later, at Fattoria di Felsina, we taste their wines as well as their very own olive oils over lunch. Free time in Siena awaits later and then we make our way back to Radda, for an evening at leisure. Day 3 This morning, we go to Col d’Orcia, a winery that

adopted organic farming in order to become the largest organic wine-producing farm in the whole of Tuscany. After lunch here, we call in at Montalcino, where the aristocrats of Siena took refuge after the fall of their city to the Medicis. Later, we have a free evening in Radda. Wine tasting in Tuscany

Day 4 Visit the lovely estate of Selvapiana today, whose wines are historically more elegant and have a greater capacity for cellar ageing than some of its neighbours. Over lunch, we sample their amazing wines as well as olive oils. Later, we return to our hotel in Radda to relax and then tonight we are honoured guests at the medieval hamlet of Castello di Volpaia for dinner. Day 5 On our last day, we venture west with some free time to explore the impressive hilltop town of San Gimignano. Here, winding streets and towers will enchant us. Afterwards, we make our way back to the airport and catch our return flight home.

Ruins of the Baths of Diocletian

Day 1 After checking into our hotel, we have a late afternoon walk around the Campus Martius, taking in a variety of monuments from the Republican era. We explore the 4th to 2nd century BC temples in the Largo di Torre Argentina, standing close to the spot where Caesar was assassinated on the Ides of March. We then stroll through the Campo de’ Fiori, which, in the Renaissance, was home to merchants and inns, including one that was owned by Vannozza dei Cattanei, the mother of Lucrezia and Cesare Borgia. Here, in these winding streets, we will find the remains of Pompey’s theatre and stand where Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake. The evening is free for you to discover some of Rome’s culinary treasures – and, as you may already know, there are plenty to choose from.

Day 4 After breakfast, we head to the Catacombs of St. Sebastian, famed not only for Christian burials but also Castel Sant’Angelo for its 2nd century pagan tombs, some of which are painted. We continue along the Appian Way, one of the earliest strategic roads leading out of the city, to the Circus of Maxentius, the most intact hippodrome in Rome and one of the few in existence with surviving starting gates. Not far from here, we admire the tomb of Caecilia Metella, the most impressive mausoleum on the Appian Way, built to honour the daughter-in-law of Marcus Licinius Crassus, the triumvir. Finally, we stroll down the ancient road to the Villa di Capo di Bove, which was once owned by Herodes Atticus. Day 5 We end this memorable tour on a high point, with a

Day 2 We take taxis to the Basilica of St. John Lateran,

where we have an appointment to explore a plethora of ancient remains that are buried beneath the Papal basilica, including dwellings, defensive works and even a Constantinian church. We then have another private visit to a nearby site, namely the Porta Asinaria – an imposing day-by-day 3rd century gateway with massive ballista towers and guardrooms. This afternoon, we explore the Porta Maggiore, a monumentalised section of two aqueducts that were built by the emperor Claudius, which affords far and away the best understanding of aqueducts in the city. We then turn the corner to view the wonderfully pompous tomb of Eurysaces the baker, a former slave who capitalised on his new found wealth.

visit to the Palazzo Valentini, whose foundations beneath hide senatorial houses and a gigantic collapsed column, which once belonged to the long-lost Temple of Trajan. Our tour ends this afternoon and you can either choose to extend your stay in Italy or catch your return flight home.

Day 3 Prepare for an extraordinary morning as we visit the Vatican City. Our expert guide leads us through its staggering collection of artworks, and culminates with an in-depth exploration of the magnificent Sistine Chapel. The afternoon is entirely free for you to spend at your leisure. Perhaps see Emperor Hadrian’s mighty fortress, Castel Sant’Angelo – another papal highlight – or take a tranquil stroll along the River Tiber.

Bare Bones Essential Pompeii

Bare Bones

With so much to offer the intrepid traveller, Pompeii continues to be one of our most popular destinations so it made sense to include it in our ‘Bare Bones’ programme. Our five-day tour includes the insightful company of expert guides, who share real-life stories about the ruins and history that remain here, and ongoing discoveries here mean that there has never been a better time to visit. We also spend time in the neighbouring Herculaneum, where the tall houses of noblemen were buried up to their rooftops. Then, we travel onward to Naples for a closer look at the area’s most celebrated artefacts before entering the luxurious world of Roman coastal villas at Oplontis. Free time ensures you’ll make the most of your time here – climb the mighty volcanic crater of Vesuvius or sit back with a glass of Italian wine.

Explore neighbouring Herculaneum too! In addition to exploring the evocative, world-renowned site of Pompeii, we will take you to the nearby town of Herculaneum. This lesser-visited area was buried to a deeper level and the remains there are simply astounding.

Itinerary Day 1 After settling in to our hotel, our group comes together this afternoon for a gentle walk through today’s Pompeii, which includes its famous, modern cathedral. This is a good start to the trip as well as an early chance to get to know our expert guide and fellow travellers. Day 2 Today, we enjoy a full day in the ruins of ancient

Pompeii with our expert guide. Beginning at the town’s majestic amphitheatre — the oldest Roman amphitheatre in existence — we take in a range of key sights, including bars, brothels and public squares preserved by the deadly lava flow of Vesuvius. We also delve into several lesserknown areas of Pompeii, including villas that have only recently reopened to the public. Many of our lecturers have excavated here and your guide will be able to point out a range of fine details that most visitors miss, such as scurrilous graffiti and the wheel ruts of journeys past.

Day 4 We visit Herculaneum, once an upmarket coastal city buried beneath 23 metres of volcanic material, which hermetically sealed the site. Here, quite unlike Pompeii, fragile items such as wooden partitions, beds and shutters have been perfectly preserved. Also unlike Pompeii, many of the everyday items have been left in place. Walking down Cardo IV or the Decumanus Maximus of Herculaneum, you can almost feel the presence of the ancient inhabitants as well as the undeniable horror they experienced on that fateful day. Day 5 Today, you have the choice of returning home or

enjoying an optional tour of Oplontis via private transport, where you will explore the famous villa that may have belonged to Poppaea, the wife of Nero who came from Pompeii. This grandiose pleasure villa has some extraordinary frescoes and is important for having wellpreserved elite living spaces in addition to slave quarters.

Day 3 A local train ride brings us to Naples this morning for an illuminating tour of the city’s superb Archaeological Museum. While you’re here, be sure not to miss the famous collection of Farnese Marbles, extensive stone engravings from the finest Roman mosaics, frescoes and the famous bronzes. This afternoon, we explore the secrets of ancient Naples and walk down the ancient Decumanus Maximus to the underground Roman market buried beneath the church of San Lorenzo.

Sicily & Southern Italy:

archaeological tours

Classical Crossroads of the Mediterranean Home to some of the Old World’s grandest, most beautiful and certainly the best-preserved Classical archaeological sites, Sicily and mainland southern Italy are interesting places to visit. Their joint wealth of historic monuments – many built on a colossal scale – commemorate the turbulent sequences of discovery, conquest, colonisation and decline that successive invaders brought to an area that is today one of the Mediterranean’s most fascinating melting pots. Under the guidance of our specialist leaders, the many world-class sites we explore here span Agrigento’s Greek temples, the Roman amphitheatre at Syracuse, Casale’s late-Roman mosaics, Paestum’s Doric temples and the compelling ruins of Pompeii. Add to this the enjoyment of travel through sun-soaked landscapes, regional cuisine and rich culture.

Wander the haunting remains of Pompeii No tour of southern Italy would be complete without a stop at Pompeii to stand among its evocative remains. Be sure to keep an eye out for the graffiti that has survived since ancient times and the wheel ruts in the roads.

Itinerary

Archaeology

Day 1 We fly from London to the beautiful coastal town of Naples, in the south of Italy. Day 2 Today we drive south to explore the temples, site and museum at Paestum. Long before the Romans came, this was a thriving Greek city – part of greater Greece from the 6th century BC. We wander among the three mighty temples, considered to be some of the bestpreserved anywhere in the Greek world. After lunch, we discover the collections housed within Paestum Museum, including the unique painted ‘Tomb of the Diver’, dated to around 480 BC. Day 3 An entire day devoted to Pompeii. No other site

compares in revealing the scale and proportions of a Roman town. We visit some of the best-preserved buildings along with an amphitheatre, theatre, forum, bathhouses, bars and brothels. The fountains in the street, worn from the hands of thousands of citizens who paused to take a drink there, wheel ruts, the graffiti on house walls – there is so much to take in. Travelling via the best routes to avoid the inevitable crowds, we visit several villas that have only recently reopened to the public. Many of our Guide Lecturers have excavated at Pompeii themselves and will introduce to us the very latest research that is shedding light on this extraordinary site, and thus, the whole Roman world. Day 4 Today, we marvel at the exceptional collections of artefacts housed within the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. Many of the best wall-paintings and statues were brought here in the early years of the excavations. More poignant, perhaps, are the tableware, glass beads, dice and other incidental objects of everyday life. After lunch in Naples, we move on to Pozzuoli to see one of the world’s most breathtaking amphitheatres, where passageways hold the stories of gladiators who awaited their fate there. Later, we have arranged very special private access to the giant cistern Piscina Mirabilis, which stored water for the Roman fleet and fed all the towns in the neighbouring area. Day 5 Go off the beaten track to the villas of Stabiae, an exclusive Roman resort for the wealthy. The vast Villa San Marco is one of the most opulent along this coast and remains impressive in its scale. The Villa Arianna offers wonderful views over the Bay of Naples and is remarkably

little visited. We walk through the grand rooms, chambers and gardens in splendid isolation. There is free time this afternoon for us to either return to Pompeii or relax. Day 6 The town of Herculaneum, which perfectly complements a visit to Pompeii, is our next port of call. This location was buried to a significantly greater depth than Pompeii and here, we can wander streets with almost complete Roman houses rising up on either side that, in some cases, have been preserved up to their rooftops. Herculaneum is a much more compact site and has fewer visitors, but is certainly no less fascinating. We stop for lunch and then afterwards we explore another hidden gem in the Bay of Naples – a modest farmhouse that was discovered at Boscoreale. This rustic house is named Villa Regina and has an interesting museum nearby. The surrounding area would have been agricultural in Roman times, producing wine and olive oil, and vines still grow outside in its gardens today. Day 7 On our final full day, we ascend the great volcanic crater of Vesuvius. Most of our journey is by bus, but the final part requires a short walk. We are rewarded with incredibly views both down into the crater and out across the Bay of Naples, putting everything we have seen during the week into perspective. Walking up to the crater is an experience not to be missed as we can observe different coloured lava rock that sits in layers. After lunch, we spend the remainder of our afternoon at the villa of Oplontis. Both buried and preserved, this structure is even more grand than those at Stabaie and makes for a fitting end to our magnificent tour. Day 7 Transfer to the airport where we bid farewell to the group and depart for our flight back to London.

Basilicata & Calabria A truly wonderful introduction to the unspoilt mountains and hills of the ‘toe and instep’ of southern Italy – much favoured by ancient colonists, though little-visited by tourists today. Journeying along the coast, we travel through more than 2,000 years of an immemorial story. Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Norman and Spanish invaders not only came and conquered, but stayed too – producing cities, castles and churches from the Classical period onwards. We will also discover the UNESCOlisted site of Matera, crowned as the 2019 European Capital of Culture, and visit a range of stops that showcase Italy ‘beyond the tourist trail’.

Explore 2019’s European Capital of Culture Matera has received this impressive accolade for the year 2019 and we will take you there to experience it in the company of an expert guide. A network of rock-cut cave dwellings and later Byzantine chapels await.
