2.2.4 MICROCLIMATE & TOPOGRAPHY The topography of the site influences the microclimates on site with warmer northern and western slopes and cooler ones facing south.

The land bears records of passed events from the time of Gondawa Land to nowadays. Both land and cemeteries are testament to this “passing of time” and life’s cycle, thus it provides the design narrative of “Timeline”.

Generally the top half of the site is more sheltered due to its natural amphitheatre shape , except in winter when exposed to south-westerly winds.

Hotter summer winds mostly affect the lower slopes below Varroville House.

A cemetery is a record of social & cultural history. The land also bears records of passed events from the time of Gondwana Land to nowadays.

Both the land and cemeteries are testament of this “passing of time” and life’s cycle- thus providing us with a design narrative appropriate to the use of the site and its rich history.

Significant views from key viewpoints outside the site (shown in orange) have been carefully assessed prior to the JRPP decision. These views are the subject of a separate analysis report by Dr R. Lamb & a recent rerendering exercise.

A number of ‘historically significant’ views to Macquarie Fields, Denham Court & Robin Hood Farm (shown in dark blue) were identified in the Bitton & Morris’ 2000 study of colonial properties of the Cumberland Plain.

It is acknowledged that some of these vistas are now partially totallyPARK obscured.

2.2.9 ECOLOGY The site is host to the Cumberland Plain Woodland (CPW) vegetation community, which is a threatened planting community in need of protection. The habitat they provide for the threatened Microbat and Land Snail species also needs protecting.

The cultural landscape of the subject site is also of heritage significance at the state level for its historic values and for its rarity. It is listed on the State Heritage Register (SHR) and is also identified as a local heritage item 2.

2.2.13 ABORIGINAL HERITAGE

T

he site is approximately 113 hectares in size, situated between Camden Valley Way and the Hume Highway, characterised by undulating grassed hills and pockets of forested areas. It sits within the Scenic Hills and surrounds the historical Varroville House. The site is of European It is a unique cemetery, one which respects the land onto which it is built, the burial practices of its time and the aspirations of the public. This cemetery design is unlike anything else currently offered in Australia.

The concept is based on the belief that a cemetery can be a park, a sanctuary, a sculpture park and open space.

Aboriginal people were highly mobile hunter-gatherers utilising different landforms for travel and resource zones for food and shelter.

The existing archaeological record is limited to certain materials and objects that were able to withstand degradation and decay. As a result the most common type of Aboriginal objects remaining in the archaeological record are stone artefacts.

An overview ofSITE previousANALYSIS studies that artefacts scatters 2. and isolated artefacts and the most common site types recorded. SitesSUMMARY are generally expected around creek 2.2 lines and crest of hills.”

2.2.14 EUROPEAN HERITAGE

The areas of the site of “”most to least” sensitivity are “The site of historic significance as a large remnant of shown onisFig.14. the ‘Varroville’ estate established by Dr Robert Townson from 1812 and further developed by a succession of subsequent owners. The subject site includes substantial remnants of the 19th century farm complex and cultural landscape potentially associated with the phase of development of the first permanent Varroville homestead (1812- 1858) including outbuildings, as well as dams, remnant agricultural evidence including vineyard terracing (contoured trenches) and evidence 20 of the early access road. Varroville and the estate MACARTHUR MEMORIAL PARK LANDSCAPE DESIGN RESPONSE have been continuously occupied since the award of the grant in 1810. As a founding and significant estate in the development of the region (from c.1810), the estate is significant for its role in the early settlement and development of the area as a farming district and was significant to agriculture and food production and horticultural development in early New South Wales.

The former cottage and stables buildings are a good example of 19th century farm buildings and reflect the 19th century development of the farmstead.”

“The cultural landscape of the subject site is also of local heritage significance for its associative, aesthetic, social, and representative values and for its research potential”.

“Varroville and the estate have strong associations with several individuals and families important in the development of rural industries in the colony of NSW including agriculture, horticulture, viticulture and stock breeding. This includes Doctor Robert Townson, the original grantee for the estate and the colony’s most highly regarded academic when he arrived in 1807; explorer Charles Sturt, who is credited with the construction of the dams... The European and Aboriginal Heritage were thoroughly researched and compiled into the Conservation Management Plan 2015 (by Urbis).

In turn, the CMP informed our design response, Interpretation and Public Art Strategies, ensuring that the historical significance of the site is captured in all aspects of the design.

Climate Positive Design The cemetery has been assessed using the Pathfinder tool to be climate positive. It was an exhilarating experience to gain the understanding of carbon footprint in a large project. Many environmentally features incorporated into the project and although being climate positive in a cemetery would not be easy, the result was honourable as it became the first Climate Positive cemetery.

T

he project’s objective was to create a development plan and documentation for a section of an existing cemetery in Brisbane, which included the Baobab open-air Chapel within its grounds. The idea was to provide visitors with a serene environment where they could enjoy the sight and sound of flowing water while focusing on the existing Baobab grove.

ocating in Gold Coast, this is a green space, stylish and elegant resting place respond to the multi-cultural society, an approximately 10 ha. of vacant rural land on a 23-hectare site. The design includes elements that, when viewed from above, form the image of an angel.

It also integrates wetlands, a network of recreational paths, and a picnic area.

hitgar Reservoir promenade is a part of the Chitgar artificial lake project which is located at the northwestern Tehran. It has a total area of 18.5 hectares.

The project incorporates ecological enhancement and provides functional needs of the area. The recreational places along the path, as well as pedestrian pathway, cycling and tram lanes are to be considered.

The multipurpose platform can be used as a gathering place to perform cultural shows and dramas during the festivals, as well as a water jet ground feature to provide soothing sight and sound when not in use for performances.

Inspired by traditional design tiling, the paving become more acceptable in the area.

in Linepark is located at the southwest of Fin Garden in Kashan -a historical city- with the total area of 16.7 hectares.

The aim was to create a cultural-recreational linepark along the highway to attract tourists as well as not overshadowing the historical Fin garden.

This is why the main axes are designed toward the Fin, emphasizing the forever importance of it.

A series of terraces along the topography of the site, provide different views to the Fin. Small events can take place at the exhibition which add value to the project.

383.ha ecological and recreational park. The importance of phase 2 of the project with 101 hectares’ area, is because of its proximity to residential blocks. It has a lower slope and a wider area than other phases, consisting of recreational, sports areas as well as service areas.
