For much of our history (which, dating back to 1698, makes us the third oldest publisher in the UK), we have been a Bible publisher, but for a few decades we found ourselves without a Bible licence. That changed in 2014, when Sam joined the SPCK Group. Our first acquisition was the NRSV Bible, which we published with great success, and the newly updated edition, the NRSVue, was published earlier this year. In addition to this translation, The Bible for Everyone by John Goldingay and Tom Wright followed in 2018, the New Living Translation in 2019, and the ESV Catholic Edition in 2021. We have excelled with Bible partnerships as well, such as the Premier Christian Communications NLT Bible edition in 2018 which continues, and the BST (Bible Speaks Today) NIV Study Bible which was published in 2020.
With Children’s Bible publishing, the status is quite different! For more than 40 years, the SPCK Group has been publishing Bible retellings for children, with sales of these titles in many languages worldwide. One of the first – and still going strong – Bible retellings is The Lion Children’s Bible by Lion Publishing founder Pat Alexander. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, there was an ongoing programme of Children’s Bibles, making the familiar and not so familiar stories from the Old and New Testaments accessible and engaging for all ages. Among these are much-loved editions such as The Lion First Bible, The Children’s Bible in 365 Stories and The Lion Graphic Bible. In the 2000s, Candle Books Bible retellings joined the programme and SPCK Publishing began their Children’s Bible programme from 2015. Each year, the tradition of producing high-quality, beautifully illustrated and faithful retellings has continued, and 2024 saw the release of Tom Wright’s My Big Story Bible. The SPCK Group also now offers Children’s and Youth editions of Bible translations for use in homes, schools and church groups.
Moving forward, we have exciting plans for these translations in the future. With the opportunities that evolving technology offers, we are dreaming of new ways to present the Bible. All of the above translations are available as eBooks now and the ESV-CE is also available as an audiobook.
Our proven track record for British Bible products shows that we are the leading Bible publisher in the UK with a wide- ranging and ever-growing family of Bibles. We hope you enjoy exploring the fruits of our labours.
The first comprehensive revision of the NRSV. The NRSV has been called the most accurate of English translations.
Now with British spelling, grammar and punctuation, and with over 20,000 updates and enhancements that clarify the text and make it resonate with today’s readers, this is the first comprehensive revision of the NRSV since it was published in 1989.
Acclaimed by both biblical scholars and general readers as the most reliable English Bible available, the New Revised Standard Version follows in the great tradition of the King James Version in being true to the original meaning of the text while conveying it in a dignified style that speaks powerfully to today's readers.

‘The NRSV has long been my first choice among modern versions of the Bible, and as a linguist by training I was eager to see how this updated edition compares with previous versions. I was not disappointed! Thirty years of advances in textual analysis make it more accurate than any other translation, and now its sensitive rendering into elegant and inclusive British English ensures a smoother and more rewarding reading experience for millions of English speakers, both in the UK and around the world. All of which means the NRSVue now stands at the pinnacle of English Bible translations.’
EMMA INESON, BISHOP OF KENSINGTON, LONDON
‘I view the NRSV translation to be the finest English Bible we have today. Its scholarship is impeccable. The English is accurate, approachable and readable. I recommend it highly.’
RICHARD J. FOSTER, WRITER AND THEOLOGIAN
‘The NRSV is my first choice, both for my college classes and for my own study and devotion. The careful scholarship of the translation, the generosity of the pronouns, and the invaluable textual notations make this translation my most trusted friend in preaching, teaching, worship and prayer.’
BARBARA BROWN TAYLOR, WRITER AND PREACHER
Beloved by millions around the world, the English Standard Version is ideal for anyone looking for a contemporary and readable translation.
The ESV-CE published by SPCK has been approved by the Catholic Bishops of England, Wales and Scotland, as the basis for the new Lectionary, which comes into force in December 2024, and for all future liturgical texts used by Catholics.
One of the ESV's distinctive aims is to capture the precise wording of the original texts by rendering each Hebrew or Greek word with an equivalent English word. The result is an excellent version for detailed Bible study, but one that also possesses a beauty, clarity and dignity of style that makes it superbly suitable for reading alone or for reading aloud during public worship.

In the beginning (days one to three)
1At the beginning of God’s creating the heavens and the earth, 2when the earth was an empty void, with darkness over the face of the deep, and God’s breath sweeping over the face of the water, 3God said, ‘Light!’ and light came into being. 4God saw that light was good, and God made a distinction between light and darkness. 5God called the light ‘day’; the darkness he called ‘night’. And there was evening and there was morning, day one.

6God said, ‘A dome in the middle of the water to make water distinct from water!’ 7And God made the dome and made a distinction between the water that was under the dome and the water that was above the dome. So it came to be. 8God called the dome ‘heavens’. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.
John Goldingay and Tom Wright, two worldrenowned biblical scholars and communicators, have drawn together, revised and supplemented the translations that appear in their popular For Everyone commentaries to create a rounded, readable and reliable version of the Bible.
20God said, ‘The water is to teem with living creatures, and birds are to fly over the earth, over the face of the dome of the heavens!’
21God created the big sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the water teems, by their species, and every winged bird by its species. God saw that it was good. 22God blessed them: ‘Be fruitful, be numerous, fill the water in the seas; birds are to be numerous on the earth.’ 23And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.
The Bible for Everyone is a rich, vibrant and insightful translation based upon John Goldingay and Tom Wright‘s lifetime study and love of the Scriptures.

Revised, improved and streamlined edition of the Bible text

God saw that it was good.

The translation conveys the message of the original texts in clear, contemporary language. Its guiding principle is to render words and phrases as simply and literally as possible when that approach yields an accurate, consistent and natural English text, thus preserving literary devices, metaphors and word choices that give structure and provide meaningful connections between different passages.
