February 2013 Newsletter

Welcome & notice of AGM

Our AGM will be held on Wednesday 20th March at the Hastings Baptist Church (on Lyndon Road near council buildings). Please arrive by 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start, supper will follow. We encourage all members to attend to meet the team, hear about all the work we’ve done during the year, and have the chance to ask questions. We also need people to give serious consideration to becoming a committee member, as a number of the current committee are having to leave us this year. Anyone wanting to know more can call Sharon on 027 778 8689. Nominations will be taken on the day. You must be a member to attend and be nominated. The following motions will be moved for acceptance: • A corporate membership will be introduced at $100. • Officers are to be nominated and elected at the committee meeting following the AGM. • The annual financial statements are required, as a minimum, to be subject to a review in accordance with the relevant New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants Review Engagement Standard. A reminder that your membership must be up to date in order to vote or be nominated. Please do remember to renew your membership if you haven’t already, and turn to the back page to find a new way of supporting your shelter. We greatly value your continued support.

Christmas may be over, but ‘tis still the season

The summer period over Christmas is traditionally kitten and puppy season. We receive many unplanned and unwanted litters of kittens and pups, some of whom are thoughtlessly abandoned. The shelter is bursting at the seams with a large number of kittens available now for adoption, and more coming in every day. “We need to get these kittens into good homes as soon as possible as we have simply run out of room” says Shelter Manager Shirley Davy. The SPCA is the first place people should come to when they are looking for a new pet – our kittens are great value for money as they’re de-sexed, vaccinated, vetchecked, wormed, de-fleaed and mirco-chipped. Given all of this, kitten adoptions from the Hastings & Districts SPCA are great value for only $139. Anyone considering adoption is invited to meet the animals at the shelter between 10.30am and 2.30pm daily. Shirley also points out that due to the increase in animal numbers there are opportunities for more volunteers at the shelter. If you’ve ever thought about working with animals but haven’t quite got round to it - now’s the time! We provide lots of love and care to many hundreds of animals each year; we tend to their in-

“ Being at the SPCA is a great way to help all those animals who need some love, compassion and comfort. Not only do you help provide for their basic needs like feeding and cleaning, but most importantly you can give them your time and love. Anyone who is committed to animals and their welfare would be welcomed at the shelter. All you need is some love and spare time to give.” Says long-time volunteer Kirsty Whittaker. juries and rekindle the trust and companionship many have lost through abuse and neglect. Volunteering is a great opportunity to give back to the community. The SPCA is a very rewarding place for animal lovers, you’ll be able to see animals finding homes and provide them with the care and love that they need during their stay here. As a volunteer at the SPCA, you can develop and hone skills that you’ll be able to use for a life time, such as health and safety around animals, communication skills and dealing with the public, as well as participating in the improvement of your community.

We can help make your New Year’s Resolution of ‘helping others’ come true.
