Athletic Center Opens
New Campus Construction Continues on Schedule
The Spartanburg Day School’s motto from its beginning in 1957 has been Finis Coronat Opus, “The End Crowns the Work.” The dedication of the new athletic center this past August signified another jewel to the school’s crown and another step in completing a sweeping revision of the school campus. new 3.6 million dollar athletic complex features a gym with two full courts, seating for 650 people, new fitness and training room, activity room, office spaces and a generous concourse. Locker rooms were renovated and the Milliken gym retained and integrated into the new complex. The gym shares parking with the Mildred Harrison Dent Fine Arts Center which has provided studio, classroom, performance and exhibit spaces for the visual arts, music and drama programs since its opening in 1999.
Completed in the summer of 2010, the school’s existing 100-400 wing structure, originally constructed in the Sixties, has been completely renovated, with all windows and doors replaced and new lighting and insulation added, creating a highly energy-efficient building that is soon to be LEED certified. The project, largely funded by Gerrish and Roger Milliken, included the creation of a geo-thermal heating and cooling system that entailed the drilling of nearly 100 wells.
