ALME The city of Almeria is Andalucia’s most eastern capital. Years ago, it was not as well known by tourists as other capitals like Malaga, Sevillle, or Granada. However, that has changed drastically recently with its growth as a major holiday area.

is home to the Mediterraneo shopping complex.

Hotels are readily signposted, as are the convenient train and bus stations. Not without its traditional bullring, the Plaza de Toros de Almeria dates back to 1888 and has a capacity for over 9,000 spectators.

Almeria holds a great deal of charm and is steeped in history. It is located at the foot of a mountain range which is crowned by the magnificent Alcazaba, an Arab fortress built by the Caliph of Cordoba, Abd-erRahman with three huge walled enclosures (in the second of which are remains of a mosque, converted to a chapel by the Catholic kings). The Alcazaba is the second largest Muslim fortress in Andalucia behind the Alhambra in Granada.

A huge iron railway bridge, Cables Ingles, constructed by a British mining company in the early 20th century, dominates the landscape at one end of the port, part of the industrial heritage of the city, from the mining era of Almeria, it is now being restored to be promoted as a tourist attraction. The ferry terminal by the port offers trips across the Mediterranean sea to North Africa, and the Parque de Nicolas Salmeron, a narrow strip of approximately one kilometre in length, situated between the port and the city streets, provides green areas and shaded seating.

AlmerĂ­a as one of the eight provincial capitals of Andalucia, houses various museums. True historians will appreciate the Almeria Museum which contains numerous objects discovered by the well-known Belgian mining engineer, Louis Siret.

The contemporary art museum is well worth visiting.

Take a stroll around Almeria and discover for yourself numerous examples of beautiful street art.

In the centre of the city is La Rambla, Avenide de Frederico Garcia Lorca, a long tree lined avenue that leads down to the port and beaches, it has a vibrant and modern feel with bustling street cafes, tempting shops, feature water fountains, and play areas for children. With easy access from the motorway there is plenty of underground parking.

Close by is Paseo de Almeria, the main road for serious shoppers, with its neighbouring streets packed with appealing little boutiques. Avenida del Mediterraneo, runs right through the city centre and

The tourist train, which runs at the weekend, takes a route through the old quarter and port area, offering a relaxing way to see the city sights. The starting point for the train is at Plaza de Emilio Perez and the timetable is available from the Almeria Turismo website.

Located in the heart of the Old Quarter, on the site of a former Arabic souk, the Aire de Almeria has recovered an ancient Arabic baths and restored an ancient tradition. A testimony to the Muslim presence that enriched the cultural and social heritage of Almeria city, here, in luxurious surroundings it is possible to indulge ones self in the custom of Arabic bathing, incorporating the ritual of moderate, warm and cold immersions to cleanse the mind and body.

A trip to the city would not be complete without experiencing its nightlife and local cuisine. The restaurants and bars in the centre of town are located between Paseo de Almeria and La Rambla and the area is noted for it excellent seafood and tapas.

Almeria City commemorates many fiestas, having religious or historical connotations they are celebrated round the clock with passion and enthusiasm, such momentous local occasions where everyone is made welcome. The Almeria Turismo website provides details and dates of the Almeria city fiestas.

Costa Almeria, a huge expanse of unspoilt coastline between Murcia and Granada. Perhaps not as well known as some of the Costa´s, yet its inhabitants like the fact its villages retain much of their Spanish identity making it the “real Spain” still.

It is known for having the hottest, cleanest and driest climate also of any other Spanish location.

town’s dual identity: part pretty traditional, quiet, hillside village (Pueblo) and part lively beach (Playa) resort affords overseas property buyers the ‘best of both worlds’.Mojácar Pueblo is a picture book village of little whitewashed houses and is nestled in the olive and almond grove dotted foothills of the Sierra Cabrera mountain range.

Beautiful Mojácar remains a hot spot, only 40 minutes drive from the airport of Almeria, it is a favourite for all nationalities as a traditional holiday destination - ideal for families and couples. The

Vera is another hotspot – also divided into Pueblo and Playa areas with direct access to Garrucha – a working port with a new harbour, and the scubadiving centre of Villaricos.

Why are you buying?

As with buying anywhere abroad, you must ask yourself “Why are you buying?”. Do you want somewhere for regular holidays, investment or a permanent home? Maybe you will need to cover your costs by renting it out too? Consider what type of area and property you would like to be in, rural or urban? new or old? amongst expats or locals? Other key considerations include how far you want to be from an airport, beaches and key amenities such as supermarkets and a local restaurant/bar.

If you are relocating full-time with a family then schooling options will need to be investigated early on (and places applied for months in advance), whilst retirees will need to check on medical facilities and pharmacies.

When you are viewing the properties you have chosen to see, it is advisable to take your own notes of each property so you can take a look later and compare notes. Viewing days can be long and you may see several properties so your personal notes on your thoughts on each property will be invaluable.

La Costa Almeria, une région côtière non perturbée située entre Murcia et Granada n’est pas la plus connue des régions, cependant, ses habitants apprécient le fait que les villages locaux ont gardé leur identité spécifique, créant ce sentiment d’authenticité Espagnol qui disparait de plus en plus. Cette Costa est aussi réputée pour son climat chaud et sec, et pour la qualité de l’air.

Mojacar est une perle, à seulement 40 minutes de l’aéroport d’Almeria, ce village est une destination traditionnelle pour couples et familles. Divisé en deux parties distinctes : (le Pueblo) est la partie traditionnelle du village de montagne, collé aux parois de la Sierra Cabrera, avec des ruelles typiques et un panorama de rêve ; (la Playa) est la partie en bord de mer et est renommée pour sa diversité, sa plage et offre à l’acheteur le meilleur de deux mondes.

Drink driving in Spain.

Know your alcohol limits.

With the Spanish lifestyle being one of early coffee’s, with a large dash of something, big lunches and late dining, all with plenty of wine or a small beer or two, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the law must be way more relaxed than that in the UK but this isn’t the case.

In England, Wales & Northern Ireland, the legal alcohol limit when breathalysed is 35 Micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath (0.35 mg/l) or 0.8 grammes per litre in a blood test (0.8gr/l). In Scotland this is a little less at 0.22 mg/l for a breathalyser or 0.5 gr/l in blood.

In Spain, the legal alcohol limit (breath) is in general 0.25 mg/l or 0.5 gr/l in blood. You’ll notice that this is significantly less than most of those in the UK. Along with these stricter guidelines, you will often encounter control points and police checkpoints where the Guardia Civil are cracking down on these offenses so If the amount of alcohol exceeds this limit, the driver will be heavily fined and lose several points.

In the event such amount of the breathalyser exceeds 0.60 mg/l, the driver becomes subject to a criminal proceeding and will be arrested. A blood test is only available when you have finished the alcohol breath test and you disagree with the result.

Indalo

The Indalo is a prehistoric magical symbol found in the cave of “Los Letreros” (“The Signboards”) in Sierra de MaríaLos Vélez Natural Park in Vélez Blanco.

It has been customary to paint the Indalo symbol on the front of houses and businesses to protect them from evil (similar to Kokopelli of the southwestern USA) and is considered to be a god totem.

As well as painting, it is also deemed good luck to receive the symbol to attach to the front of your house as a moving in gift for the same reasons.

Usually of metal construction or as pottery of some sort, received as a gift and affixed by your front door is said to have the same affect.

The indalo has a Levantine origin and dates back to 2500 BC. It is believed that around this time there was a cultural capital for the Iberian peoples around Almeria and the use of metal (copper) was first being developed. Also around this time, large burial chambers were in prominence, one of the best known in all of Europe being at Antequera, just north of Malaga. (named by the Romans “Antikaria – meaning ancient).

As well as on your house or business, the Indalo symbol is used as a lucky charm in the Almeria region also. To carry the charm is only beneficial if it has been presented as a gift.

Some people also believe that the story behind the symbol of the Indalo man is about a man who escapes in a cave to get away from the rain, then when the rain stops, out comes a rainbow and when the man walks away from the wall of the cave, the image is left there. The American based indigenous rights organization Cultural Survival uses an Indalo symbol on its logo.

The pictograph was named in memory of Saint Indaletius, and means “Indal eccius” (Messenger of the Gods) in the Iberian language.

Legend has it that the Indalo was a ghost that could hold and carry a rainbow in his hands (thus the arch over the head of the man). The Indalo has been adopted as the official symbol in the province of Almería, Spain.

The History of Paellas

Nearly everyone who travels to Spain on holiday will try at least one Paella and feel a little bit Spanish. Here we explored the history of this famous rice dish and how it came to be.

Paella is a Valencian rice dish with ancient roots that originated in its modern form in the mid-19th century near Albufera lagoon on the east coast of Spain adjacent to the city of Valencia. Many non-Spaniards view paella as Spain’s national dish, but most Spaniards consider it to be a regional Valencian dish. Valencians, in turn, regard paella as one of their identifying symbols.

Types of paella include Valencian paella (Spanish: paella valenciana), vegetarian/vegan paella (Spanish: paella de verduras), seafood paella (Spanish: paella de marisco), and mixed paella (Spanish: paella mixta), but there are many others as well. Valencian paella is believed to be the original recipe and consists of white rice,greenbeans (bajoqueta and tavella), meat (chicken and rabbit), white beans (garrofón), snails, and seasoning such as saffron and rosemary. Another very common but seasonal ingredient is artichoke. Seafood paella replaces meat with seafood and omits beans and green vegetables. Mixed paella is a free-style combination of meat from land animals, seafood, vegetables, and sometimes beans.

Most paella chefs use bomba rice due to it being harder to overcook, but Valencians tend to use a slightly stickier (and thus more susceptible to overcooking) variety known as Senia. All types of paellas use olive oil.

Possible origins

The Moors of Moorish Spain began rice cultivation around the 10th century. Consequently, residents of the Valencian region often made casseroles of rice, fish and spices for family gatherings and religious feasts, thus establishing the custom of eating rice in Spain. This led to rice becoming a staple dish by the 15th century.

Afterwards, it became customary for cooks to combine rice with vegetables, beans and dry cod, providing an acceptable meal for Lent. Along Spain’s eastern coast, rice was predominantly eaten with fish.

Spanish food historian Lourdes March notes that the dish “symbolizes the union and heritage of two important cultures, the Roman, which gives us the utensil and the Arab which brought us the basic food of humanity for centuries

Valencian paella

On special occasions, 18th century Valencians used calderos to cook rice in the open air of their orchards near lake Albufera. Water vole meat was one of the main ingredients of early paellas along with eel and butter beans. Novelist Vicente Blasco Ibáñez described the Valencian custom of eating water voles in Cañas y Barro (1902), a realistic novel about life among the fishermen and peasants near lake Albufera.

Living standards rose with the sociological changes of the late 19th century in Spain, giving rise to gatherings and outings in the countryside. This led to a change in paella’s ingredients as well, using instead rabbit, chicken, duck and sometimes snails. This dish became so popular that in 1840 a local Spanish newspaper first used the word paella to refer to the recipe rather than the pan.

The most widely used, complete ingredient list of this era was as follows: short-grain white rice, chicken, rabbit, snails (optional), duck (optional), butter beans, great northern beans, runner beans, artichoke (a substitute for runner beans in the winter), tomatoes, fresh rosemary, sweet paprika, saffron, garlic (optional), salt, olive oil and water. Poorer Valencians, however, sometimes used nothing more than snails for meat. Valencians insist that only these ingredients should go into making modern Valencian paella.

Seafood & mixed paella

On the Mediterranean coast, Valencians used seafood instead of meat and beans to make paella. Valencians regard this recipe as authentic as well. In this recipe, the seafood is served in the shell. A variant on this is paella del senyoret which utilizes seafood without shells. Later, however, Spaniards living outside of Valencia combined seafood with meat from land animals and mixed paella was born. This paella is sometimes called “preparación barroca” (baroque preparation) due to the variety of ingredients and its final presentation.

During the 20th century, paella’s popularity spread past Spain’s borders. As other cultures set out to make paella, the dish invariably acquired regional influences.

Consequently, paella recipes went from being relatively simple to including a wide variety of seafood, meat, sausage, (even chorizo) vegetables and many different seasonings. However, the most globally popular recipe is seafood paella.

Throughout non-Valencian Spain, mixed paella is very popular. Some restaurants in Spain (and many in the United States) that serve this mixed version, refer to it as Valencian paella. However, Valencians insist only the original two Valencian recipes are authentic. They generally view all others as inferior, not genuine or even grotesque.

The running costs of your Spanish property will depend upon the type of property that you buy and whether or not you become a fiscal resident of Spain. However, all properties are liable to council tax, locally known as IBI (Impuestos de Bienes Inmuebles). IBI is normally considerably cheaper in Spain.

If you buy on a community you will be liable for Community Charges (Cuota Comunidad de Propietarios), which are for the maintenance of the complex.

The Moors & Mojácar Defining the heritage of the area.

The term Moors refers to the Muslim inhabitants of the Maghreb, North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, Sicily, and Malta during the Middle Ages, who initially were Berber and Arab peoples from North Africa.

Moors are not a distinct or self-defined people and mainstream scholars observed in 1911 that “The term ‘Moors’ has no real ethnological value.”

In 711, troops mostly formed by Moors from North Africa led the Umayyad conquest of Hispania.

The Iberian peninsula then came to be known in classical Arabic as Al-Andalus, which at its peak included most of Septimania and modern-day Spain and Portugal.

The Moors ruled parts of Andalucia from the early 8th until the late 15th centuries – 800 years of history.

Their legacy, especially in terms of what we can see today, was considerable, with two of the region’s most important and most-visited monuments – the Alhambra and the Mezquita – dating from Moorish times. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The influence of the Moors’ culture reached out far beyond Spanish borders, with the mighty cities of Sevilla, Córdoba, Granada and Cádiz being recognised throughout Europe and North Africa as centres of great learning, renowned for magnificent art and architecture, and homes to eminent scientists and philosophers. In the countyside, they also left behind sophisticated irrigation systems, testament to their skilled agriculture, and many pueblos blancos – white-painted hillside villages just like Mojácar.

Mojácar has been inhabited by many different groups since antiquity. Populated since the Bronze Age around 2000 BC, traders such as the Phoenicians and Carthaginians arrived to serve the growing communities. Under Greek dominion,

the settlement was called Murgis-Akra, whence came the Latinized Moxacar, the Moorish Muxacra and finally the current name of Mojácar. The North African Islamic Moors established themselves in Spain in the early 8th century and the province of Almería came under the authority of the Caliphate of Damascus, and was later ruled by the Umayyads of Córdoba.

Under this second enlightened rule, Mojácar quickly grew in size and importance. With the coronation of Muhammad I of Córdoba in Granada, Mojácar and its lands became incorporated into the Nasrid sultanate, and the town found itself on the frontier with the Christian forces to the east. Watchtowers and fortresses were built, or reinforced, during the 14th century, which nevertheless did little to discourage Christian incursions and fierce battles such as the bloody event of 1435 when much of the population of Mojácar was put to the sword.

On June 10, 1488, the leaders of the region agreed to submit to the Christian forces, although Mojácar’s alcaide refused to attend, considering his town to be already Spanish. At that time there was a meeting at Mojácar’s Moorish fountain, where a pact of free association between the local Moors, Jews and Christians was agreed. Mojácar, once again, began to expand until the early 18th century, when the census of the time recorded 10,000 people.

Around the middle of the 19th century, Mojácar began another period of decline.

Several severe droughts brought about this drop in the town’s fortunes, with a consequent emigration to northern Spain, other parts of Europe and to South America. The depopulation of the town was halted in the 1960s when tourism began to reverse the trend.

Power of Attorney. It is possible for you to authorise your lawyer to act on your behalf with regard to your legal matters in Spain. A Power of Attorney can be limited to just the purchase of your property, enabling your solicitor to sign on your behalf.

NIE numbers. You cannot buy a property in Spain without a NIE number (Numero de Identicación de Extranjero), which is an identity/social number for non-residents. Some agents offer to get this for you prior to a reservation, do not do this! To obtain a legal NIE you have to have a reservation contract to supply to the authorities! (Police Nacional) hence forth all future documentation from said authorities will be sent to the address registered on the NIE registration contract.

There is no rush for an NIE, they only take 7-14 days in general to get and well within a purchase timescale. Do not risk putting your name to a falsified document just so you can get an NIE number before you buy, anyone who offers to go down this road, just refer to the law or say no!

Identidad de Extranjero), dies ist ein Identität / Sozial Nummer für Nicht-Einwohner. Manche Makler bieten Ihnen an, diese Nummer schon vor der unterschreibung eines Reservierungs-kontrakt zu bekommen, aber tun Sie dies nicht !! Um eine rechtskräftige NIE Nummer zu bekommen, müssen Sie ein Reserveirungs-kontrakt an die örtlichen Behörden ( Polizei ) vorlegen, damit alle notwendige Documenten von da an zu der Adresse auf das NIE Document zugeschickt werden können.

Es gibt keine Eile um ein NIE zu bekommen, normal dauert die Bearbeitung nur 7-14 Tagen , also innerhalb einen Zeit-skala für den Ankauf. Gehen Sie kein Risiko ein und unterschreiben nie ein falsches Document, nur um Ihre NIE zu bekommen befor Sie kaufen. Wenn der Makler dieses vorschlägt, sagen Sie Nein und verweissen um auf das Gesetz.

U kunt bijv. een belangrijke afspraak voor een ondertekening missen door een ziekte of een verlate vlucht. Een Volmacht kan gelimiteerd tot alleen de aankoop van Uw eigendom, Uw advocaat kan hiermee in Uw naam ondertekenen.

NIE nummers... U kunt geen Spaans eigendom kopen zonder een NIE nummer ( Numero de Identidad de Extranjero), wat een identiteits/social nummer is voor niet-residenten. Sommige agentschappen bieden U aan dit nummer voor U te verkrijgen voordat er een reservatie gedaan is, doe dit NIET !!!! Om een legaal NIE nummer te verkrijgen, moet U een reservatie contract aan de autoriteiten ( Nationale Politie) voorleggen ! Van daaruit zal alle toekomstige documentatie van deze autoriteiten doorgestuurd worden naar het adres vermeld op het NIE registratie document.

Er is geen haast bij om een NIE aan te vragen, het duurt meestal 7-14 dagen om dit te verkrijgen en dus ruim binnen de tijdschaal van een aankoop. Neem geen risiko door Uw naam op een ongeldig document te zetten, alleen om een NIE nummer te hebben voordat U koopt, als iemand U dit aanbiedt, weiger het en verwijs naar de wet.

The legal process.

Once you have found your dream home, we then start the purchase process with a reservation agreement. This is a contract that secures the purchase price and takes the property off the market for, usually, 30 days on payment of €3,000. Expect your deposit to be held by your lawyer or your agent in a client or escrow account.

SIERRA NEVADA THE REGION

The Sierra Nevada, meaning “snowy range” in Spanish, is a mountain range in the region of Andalucia, Spain. It contains the highest point of continental Spain, the peak called “Mulhacén” which stands at 3,479m high.

Come sun or snow, the Sierra Nevada is the place to take a walk on the wild side. Europe’s second highest mountain range after the Alps, the Sierra Nevada is home to wild, rugged mountains, fertile valleys and forests of oak and chestnut. Just a few miles inland from the Costa del Sol you would be forgiven for thinking you were on a different planet. The area closest to the coast is Las Alpujarras, a rural landscape of terraced fields, rolling hills and orchards. Rising out of the foothills is the Sierra Nevada, the snow-capped range that towers above the surrounding country.

Mountain, rolling valley, oak forest - one thing is for sure, this is prime walking holiday territory. With its ancient villages, sublime views and remote isolation, the Sierra Nevada is the place to get away from it all.

LAS ALPUJARRAS

During the summer months, the hidden valleys of the Alpujurran foothills are alive with almond groves and fruit trees bearing figs, pomegranates and apricots. Wild flowers spring up beside the paths and tracks, the scent of wild herbs fill the air. Between gushing streams and green gorges, whitewashed villages cling to steep mountainsides; rugged, weather-beaten hamlets where life has carried on as it has done for centuries. Famous for their ham, there are pigs in places you would normally see a mountain goat. The villages, clusters of boxed shaped houses with flat clay roofs, would look equally at home in Morocco with their traditional Berber architecture.

THE RESORT

WINTER FUN

The Sierra Nevada Ski and Mountain resort has an attractive programme of activities centred primarily around nature and sports tourism. With an average temperature of 20º C, is the ideal place for all kinds of outdoor activities.

If you like your winter pursuits, the Sierra Nevada is a popular tourist destination in the region, as its high peaks make skiing possible in one of Europe’s most southerly ski resorts, in an area along the Mediterranean Sea predominantly known for its warm temperatures and abundant sunshine. At its foothills is found the city of Granada and, a little further, Almería and Málaga.

You can take part in language courses, children’s summer camps, sports competitions, etc. The departure point for active tourism activities is the recreational and sports area of Fuente del Mirlo Blanco, which offers its guests a range of facilities: Roller-sled (Wiegan), bike slalom, slides, children’s park with bouncing castles, trampolines, zip-lining, ice-skating on a rink with ecological ice, etc. The young ones will love these activities... and so will their parents.

In order to provide services for the wide range of activities in summer, 2, 3, and 4-star hotels are open all year round, as well as restaurants, some shops, a chemist’s and a modern clinic. The indoor car park is also open and is free in summer.

The resort also operates a cable car and chair lift for all the summer activities, and for visitors to enjoy a pleasant trip up the ski lifts of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

By far the main attraction of the resort is the 105 km (70 mi) of alpine skiing runs. With abundant snow, it is possible to ski almost anywhere on the mountain, as the whole resort is above the tree line.

As the resort mainly caters to locals, and less to people visiting for a whole week, it is much busier at weekends. There are rarely any queues mid-week outside the main Spanish holidays (first week of December, Christmas through to 6 January and Easter). Even at weekends, queues are generally fairly short by comparison to other European areas especially if the whole resort is open, allowing skiers to spread out across the mountain.

10 Top Tips Sometimes it’s the little things help with fitting into a new country & culture.

So you are considering purchasing a property in Spain for either a move or as a holiday home?

Doing like the locals do and adopting their way of life, albeit sometimes just for just your holiday, is a great way of enhancing your Spanish experience.

Here are a few tips that will ensure a better visit to this beautiful country.

1. Dress up That dress you wore to a friend’s wedding? Take it to Spain with you, no matter how smart or glamorous, you’ll fit right in. During the day, housecoats are popular for the older lady, for everyone else; wear anything you can survive the heat in. Come night time, especially during a fiesta, dig out your Sunday best. This is the case for women and men, young and old. Take a paseo (a walk) after dinner, people watch and compare dress (shoe, bag, hair) notes.

2. Eat late The main meal of the day is lunch so a light supper is normal. Depending on the kind of evening you want, it’s advisable to plan everything a little later.

An early dinner, say at 8pm, will get you the best table in the house but table reservation at 10pm will land you in the middle of a buzzing atmosphere.

3. Children Family is hugely important in every day life in Spain.

Children are loved and looked after by the whole family, abuelas (grandmothers) and tias (aunts) across the land muck in and help with the childcare.

Spanish families also keep their children up late.

While your little-ones may be tucked up in bed whilst you have a baby sitter, prepare for your evening out to be interrupted by local children who, thanks to their afternoon siesta, are full of life until the early hours. Leaving you wondering why you didn’t bring yours out with you.

4. All hail the menu del dia Lunchtimes are sacred in Spain. Many workers go home to their families or out to restaurants for at least an hour. When you are out for lunch, normally between 1-4pm, opt for the menu del dia. With a starter, main, desert with wine and water included for around €12, you really can’t go wrong. Stick to smaller, locally run restaurants for something authentic and home-cooked. And, as ever, go where you see lots of locals – a sure sign that you’ll get a good lunch. Larger swankier restaurants will also offer a menu del dia, around the €25 mark, it’s well worth going for what the chef has prepared specifically for that day.

5. Coffee Having a coffee is very much part of Spanish liestyle so If you want a cup of coffee you’ll need to ask for a cafe con leche (coffee with milk) or an Americano if you like it black. If you’re feeling adventurous and like your coffee strong, why not try one of the many other options available like a cortado (similar to an espresso with warm milk), cafe bon bon (similar to an espresso layered over condensed milk) or even a cafe solo (pretty much a very strong, small espresso!).

6. Go to the beach late It’s true what they say about mad dogs and English men. The message is clear, stay out of the sun as much as you can. An early morning swim and an early evening beach visit with a long lunch and a siesta in between is the perfect day in the hot Spanish climate. In fact, no matter how hot it is at the end of September, you won’t see Spanish people hit the Beach. Once the back-to-school period arrives in September, the beach trips are over and the openair swimming pools are closed.

7. It can be cold It can be cold in the winter. In town houses and villas, thick stone walls keep the heat out during the summer. That’s great when it’s 40 degrees Celsius outside.

8. Speak the language Wherever you go in the world, attempting to speak your host’s language will earn you brownie points; you may even make a new friend. If you’re in Spain, take it a step further and learn a few local phrases or words.

9. Look for the fiesta Always, always check the local what’s on guide, there will always be a fiesta going on near you somewhere. They are a major part of life in Spain. What’s more they are free, they can be quirky, interesting and will keep the whole family entertained.

10. Your car If you plan to take your car to Spain with you, be prepared to let go of the pristine condition of your pride and joy. Expect bumps and scratches, and accept that your car will go home with a little bit of Spanish decoration. Likewise, if you hire a car, consider excess insurance. Wing mirror wipe outs, scrapes and other ‘injuries’ your hire car suffers will cost you.

Bringing your pets.

What documentation do you need?

The documentation needed to fly a pet internationally can be staggering. From rabies certificates to pet passports and Veterinary certificates, the regulations also can change from day to day, so rather than giving you information that may be out of date tomorrow, we would advise you to contact your local authority or vet for reliable, professional and up to date data & legal requirements and the current status of your dog.

You will need to ensure they receive the correct vaccinations and make sure they have identification microchips, this is a requirement in Andalucia. Pets can not travel on airplanes without the correct carrier so speak to your airline. And of course needless to say should you decide to not bring your pets with you, please allow enough time to find them a new home.

U moet er zeker van zijn dat zij de correcte inentingen krijgen en ook dat zij een identificatie microchip hebben, dit is een verplichting in Andalusië.

Huisdieren mogen niet in een vliegtuig reizen zonder de juiste vervoer-box, vraag hierover bij Uw luchtvaartmaatschappij. En natuurlijk is het logisch dat als U Uw huisdieren niet meeneemt, dat U genoeg tijd neemt om hen een nieuw tehuis te vinden.

Olivas Querencia, Huercal Overa, Almeria, Spain.

Do you ever ask yourself, why am I here and what am I doing? We have, several times, since finding our Querencia aka ‘safe haven’, in Spain almost seven years ago. The tinted glasses we were wearing that day, were very rosy! However, there is a happy ending.

After viewing the property, (discovered via Spanish Property Choice), we conveniently ignored comments like, ‘in need of TLC, so much potential, comes with 2,229 olive trees’. Yes, 2,229 Arbequina olive trees, with a few dozen Picual/Pais trees for good measure.

So why would a HVAC Consultant Engineer and a former teacher decide to up sticks and tackle olive farming in Andalusia? No idea! Call it a hunch but we were convinced we could make it work.

Armed with oodles of puppy-like enthusiasm, boundless energy, coupled with no knowledge of Spanish or farming, what could go wrong?

A drought, earthquake, wild fire and flash flood ensued and I was heard to say, ‘there’s only pestilence left’, when I was promptly stung by a

scorpion ... but those stories are for another time.

In spite, or because of, these ‘challenges’, ‘No hay problema y tranquilo no pasa nada’, have become the rule of thumb.

We also give talks and presentations about Querencia’s flora, fauna and everything ‘oliverelated’, promoting the health and beauty benefits of this liquid gold. This June sees us opening our doors to public visits with tastings, when ‘adoptive parents’ can come along to hug their tree!

Our first harvest saw us recognising our Querencia Arbequina olives for the very first time, as they topped the wall chart in the Almazara (olive mill) office. To get 13,000 kilos of this precious fruit, we’d fought snail and earwig invasions, migrating starling attacks, high winds, a desert sandstorm, low temperatures, high temperatures and won!

That was the easy part. Learning to prune, water the trees, remove ‘yellow leaves’ and rotovate, all at the right time for the best yield, has been an education. The true cost of what goes into making olive oil!

Fast forward and we now produce extremely tasty, premium quality, single estate, extra virgin olive oil, (around 18.6% oil content and 0.02% acidity – if you know, you know).

People have ‘adopted’ Querencia trees, (see advertisement opposite), with very positive feedback .... “tastes like sunshine” and from

At just a few hours drive West from the Mojacar area, Granada comes highly recommended as somewhere to visit if you’re living in, or just visiting, this area of Andalusia. From it’s fantastic history & city vibe to it’s proximity to the Sierra Nevada Ski Resort, there’s always something to keep everyone happy so check those tyres and oil, book those bus tickets or take that flight as you’ll not be disappointed.

Granada was first settled by native tribes in the prehistoric period, and was known as Ilbyr. When the Romans colonised southern Spain, they built their own city here and called it Illibris. The Arabs, invading the peninsula in the 8th century, gave it its current name of Granada. It was the last Muslim city to fall to the Christians in 1492, at the hands of Queen Isabel of Castile and her husband Ferdinand of Aragon.

One of the most brilliant jewels of universal architecture is the Alhambra, a series of palaces and gardens built under the Nazari Dynasty in the 14th C. This mighty compound of buildings – including the summer palace called Generalife, with its fountains and gardens - stands at the foot of Spain’s highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, and overlooks the city below and the fertile plain of Granada.

At the centre of the Alhambra stands the massive Palace of Charles V, an outstanding example of Spanish Renaissance architecture. Other major Christian monuments found in the city are the Cathedral, including the Royal Chapel where Isabel and Ferdinand lie buried, the Monastery of La Cartuja and many churches built by Moorish craftsmen after the Reconquest, in Granada’s unique “mudéjar” style.

The hill facing the Alhambra is the old Moorish casbah or “medina”, called the Albaicin (main photo), a fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and whitewashed houses with secluded inner gardens, known as “cármenes”. The Plaza de San Nicolas, at the highest point of the Albaicin, is famous for its magnificent view of the Moorish palace.

The Sacromonte hill, which overlooks the city from the North, is famous for its cave dwellings, once the home of Granada’s large gypsy community.

The name Granada is ancient and mysterious. It may mean “great castle”, for the Roman fortress which once stood on the Albaicin Hill. When the Moors came here, the town was largely inhabited by Jews, for which they called it Garnat-al-Yahud - Granada of the Jews. The Jews are said to have been one of the first peoples to settle in Spain, even before the Romans.

The Alhambra

The name Alhambra comes from an Arabic root which means “red or crimson castle”, perhaps due to the hue of the towers and walls that surround the entire hill of La Sabica which by starlight is silver but by sunlight is transformed into gold. But there is another more poetic version, evoked by the Moslem analysts who speak of

the construction of the Alhambra fortress “by the light of torches”, the reflections of which gave the walls their particular coloration. Created originally for military purposes, the Alhambra was an “alcazaba” (fortress), an “alcázar” (palace) and a small “medina” (city), all in one. This triple character helps to explain many distinctive features of the monument.

Science Museum

Granada’s excellent science museum is located just two kilometres (or a 15-minute walk) south of the centre of the city on Avenida del Mediterráneo, opposite the Convention Centre. Probably the most stimulating museum for children in Andalucia, although be warned that large, noisy school groups come in term-time, from Tuesday to Friday.

El Albaicín

El Albaicín is the old Moorish quarter of the city. It’s located on a hill facing the Alhambra and there are dramatic views of this area from the palace’s famous rose gardens.

The Zirid Monarchs first established their court here in the 11th century although little remains from this era today, apart from some crumbling remains of the wall (including the section which used to encircle the Albaicín and the gates of El Arco de las Pesas, Monaita and Elvira).

Granada Cathedral

The Cathedral is located in the centre of the Muslim area and dates back to 1523. It has a nave and four aisles, a crossing and circular apse. Alonso Cano built the main façade with sculptures by Duque Cornejo, Risueño and Verdiguier while the only tower of the two planned ended up half finished. On the northern side, there is La Puerta del Perdón, a magnificent work of Diego de Siloé who also built La Puerta de San Jerónimo. The chancel is not

The History of...

There seem to be 3 variations of the history of the “Tapas” so here are all three for you to decide which sounds most plausible...

Version 1.

The word “tapas” is derived from the Spanish verb tapar, “to cover”. Tapas traditionally may have been a complementary piece of sliced ham served on top of a glass of wine, but we know them today as small portions of food commonly served as a snack with drinks in bars. Tapas can be as simple as a bowl of olives or more hearty, such as slices of Serrano ham.

The tapa was born when, due to an illness, the Spanish king Alfonso the 10th, the Wise, had to take small bites of food with some wine between meals.

Once recovered from the disease, the wise king decreed that no wine was to be served in any of the inns in the land of Castile , unless accompanied by something to eat. This was a wise precaution to counteract the adverse effects of alcohol on those people who, through lack of money to buy a nourishing meal drank alcohol on an empty stomach.

Version 2.

We should also consider the theory that the tapa first appeared because of the need of farmers and workers of other unions to take a small amount of food during their working time, which allowed them to carry on working until time for the main meal. This main meal, rich in fat, was so heavy to digest that a “siesta” had to be taken for a couple of hours before going back to the fields or to the workshop.

Longer working hours in the morning meant an easier workload after the meal.

Wine was the natural accompaniment to this snack, as it induced a mellow mood and increased strength, while in winter it warmed the body as protection against very cold days in the fields and in the workshops of the Middle Ages. In summer, the drink taken in the South was “gazpacho” (cold tomato soup), instead of wine, which increased body heat rather than providing the necessary cold refreshment.

Version 3.

According to The Joy of Cooking, the original tapas were the slices of bread or meat which sherry drinkers in Andalusian taverns used to cover their glasses between sips. This was a practical measure meant to prevent fruit flies from hovering over the sweet sherry.

The meat used to cover the sherry was normally ham or chorizo, which are both very salty and activate thirst. Because of this, bartenders and restaurant owners began creating a variety of snacks to serve with sherry, thus increasing their alcohol sales. The tapas eventually became as important as the sherry.

New docu-soap property series, Sun, Sea & Selling Houses...

There’s never been a more dramatic time to buy a property in Spain. The Garners, are from Cannock near Birmingham and are making waves on the Spanish property scene in Mojácar, Almeria. The Brummy family moved to Spain twelve years ago and have created their own property empire on the coast.

Diane Davis We spent 8 months in 2016 filming the 20 x 1 hour episodes, which followed us in the day to day running of our family business.

We are also very proud that the show highlighted our beautiful province of Costa Almeria and the stunning properties we have to offer our clients.

Once the show aired on the 13th March 2017 everything went ballistic, our web page is averaging 75,000 hits a day, our Facebook page: SpanishPropertyChoice went crazy, on average we are getting 30-50 enquires an hour and the response from the general public has absolutely blown us away. The messages, emails, cards, telephone calls and people generally coming into our offices to say how much they loved the show and the family and wanting to have their pictures taken with us, have left us speechless.

So all in all the general feed back is what an experience for us and our clients who took part.

What a great opportunity we had as a business to highlight our properties for our owners and what a great opportunity for our clients and the viewing public to see a little snippet into our world.

WILD WILD WEST Whilst on holiday in your new home or even if you live here permanently, why not take a trip to the Wild West in Tabernas at Fort Bravo or Mini Hollywood.

These have been the sites of many spaghetti Westerns including “A fistful of Dollars”.

Just a short drive inland you’ll find Texas Hollywood, Fort Bravo. It is a Western-styled theme park in the province of Almería in Spain. Built in the early 1970s, it lies a few kilometers to the north of the N-340 road highway (468 km mark), near the town of Tabernas.

Around 1977, Rafa Molina, a stuntman, bought the set for US$6,000 to improve his job opportunities if the set was to be used for filming. In the early 1980s, he started charging visitors money to tour the set.

Mock shoot-outs and barroom brawls were later added, and one of the buildings was converted into a full saloon to sell beer. It is now known as Fort Bravo.

The architecture buildings in Texas Hollywood are of two different styles built back to back split between

two different areas. The Western set features a blacksmith, jail, hotel, gallows and clapboard buildings from the American Old West era.

The Spanish set consists of a town square, a church, and houses found in a typical Mexican pueblo.

Texas Hollywood remains an active film set.

The New Camp Indian has been restored with new decorations typical of the time. With the colourful teepees it is well worth a visit.

The television series Queen of Swords was filmed May 3, 2000 to December 12, 2000, principally in the Spanish buildings and the surrounding Tabernas Desert. The Western buildings were also used for the series with the Western jail serving as the Spanish jail and one of the large Western buildings was converted into a sound stage containing the living quarters of both Senorita Alvarado and Col. Montoya.

Oasys, Mini Hollywood is another Spanish Westernstyled theme park, located off the 364 km mark of the N-340 road, near the town of Tabernas in the province of Almería, Andalusia.

Originally known as Yucca City, the set was designed

by Carlo Simi and built for Sergio Leone’s For a Few Dollars More in 1965. It was also used as a set for other films, such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). After filming of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was completed, the extras in the project bought the set and ran it as a tourist attraction. They were later bought out by a hotel group.

The Doctor Who episode “A Town Called Mercy” was filmed here and at Oasys/Mini Hollywood in 2012.

The park features daily cowboy stunt shows, such as a mock bank raid and a re-enactment of the final moments of Jesse James. It also has a very well maintained Zoo with many species of animals kept

in very good conditions with the Parrott show being a highlight.

So if you didn’t realise that this dessert area of Almeria, just down the road, was host to such Wild West movies then why not visit the old Western Towns and feel like a real Cowboy!
