Learning the basics of print design AKA. ‘Buta’ ‘Buti’ , ‘Bel’ and ‘Jaal’ in a class room project. fig 1.1 Is a ‘Bel’ that was developed from a live sketch of a plant. fig 1.2 Is a motif put in a staggared half step and made for screen printing.

fig 1.3 Is a concept wall paper developed for a childrens room. This was inspierd from the Panchatantra tale ‘ Two fox and a drum” which is a childrens narrative that talks about courage.

Learning the ‘Aarashi ‘ technique of fabric dyeing. It means to dye fabric tied around a pole giving us almost perfect stripes.

(1) Weaving on the handloom is an important skill to have for any textile designer.

In this classroom project we learnt the warping, denting drafting processes as well as understood how to manipulate the shafts and reeds to created simple and complex weaves.

A warp insprired by the weaves of the Nagaland fabrics with an ‘X’ twill incorporated into the designs through manipulation of the drafting.

A live project done with The Neptune House, Ahmedabad.

The breif was to create upholstrery fabrics for the Middle Eastern market.

My assigned country was Turkey and Inspiration was THE GRAND BAZAR.

This is a classroom project undertaken at the HSLU, Switzerland.

The pieces have been knit on the PASSAP 3000.

The assigned style for the sweater was the Setesdal sweater of Norway and my inspiration for coulour and pattern was the Northern lights or the Aurora Borealies.

All the Parts of the sweater were woven separatelty and then sewn together.

This project was a live project with the Dastakar Andhra where we teamed up with the skill Applique masters of Ahmedaabd who have migrated from Pakistan.

Combining the Jaals of the Mughal arichitechture with the motifs of the Bidri Metal works of Karnataka these designs were cereated with waste fabrics for curtains.

The project was selected by Dastaker to be taken forward.

In our material combination course we developed this structure which escalates in terms of height and density of planes to create a dynamic space which can be developed further in multiple directions.

This structure is called ‘Bare bones’ We combined bamboo for its structural strength along with the linear cotton yarn to form our framework. Tetrahedrons on the base ensured stability on which the structure could be further grown.

The LOTKA collection was made inspired from the wild and dangerous part of the forest.

All the print and motifs have been illustrated by hand and then digitally manipulated to form prints.

The collection was for cusions and Kitchen accesories.

The JUICY collection was made as a more playful take on kitchen accesories considering the then trend of POP and NEON. Tangerines and Figs were taken up as the main fruits for the motifs, combined with a few florals.

All the prints were made for Kitchen accesories and were all hand painted before digital editing to create the designs.

THE GRANDMILLENIAL | This marriage of the typical grandmothers warmth and the millennials digital zing bringing out the femininity and chic that is carved by today’s stressed out twenty- and thirty-somethings of the world creates the Grandmillenial collection. It is a nostalgic natured collection that brings in the Grand mothers floral fabrics , ruffled linens, needlepoint pillows, chintz-everything look into the modern age of dusty pinks, marbled effect countertops and gold highlights and pastels.

In this collection drawing inspiration from the insects of the amazon forests was the main motive. The people of the amazon have a great connection to nature and since a significant ratio of the species of life in the amazon are insects they have a lot of cultural context.It is a young and vibrant collection that will bring in a pop of colour and a slight essence of a forest into the homes of the people who live in the concrete jungles of the world.

The colours and patterns for this collection have been derived by taking the route of amazonian tribal motifs and colours. Terracotta orange, Mustard yellow and various shades of greens come from the forest and the violets, deep pinks and beetle reds have been derived from the Moth and beetles itself. The motifs are a direct inspiration from the flag of the amazon rain forests as well as symbols of their peoples that are often used in their tattoos and textiles.

The monochrome collection is an ode to the harmony and unity that today’s fast moving lifestyle requires. Unity in a space is important because it helps the user make sense of the room, makes the room more aesthetically pleasing and creates a relaxing effect.

Monochromes catch the users senses by eliminating distractions and focuses on the texture, form and the mood of the room .

The browns are a more texture based look that evokes the feeling of nature and draws inspiration from the leaves seeds and fungi found in nature. These are typically things that don’t exist in the original state usually found, have CHANGED and are often underrated. he blues are a more form based look that comes from the idea of PROCESSED. As blue is a colour not naturally found in nature and is usually obtained through a process and so this look is more graphic and “man-made”.
